There's some really nice features in this. Brings together a lot of what I do layering in productions, triggering off long pads on chord changes, layering varied arpeggio settings on different sounds etc. Very nice.
My entire life I've been fascinated by synth arpegios and somehow in the vast ocean of the internet, you're the first person that has actually acknowledged it and it blows my mind!
Man, I promise you aren't pretty much the channel that got me into music 💀, the explaining is so... friendly?, and you give them so much personality, gotta love them... and the cake, ofc.
Also, yaaaaaas, fursona name reveal, you go!!!
The extension of the arpeggiator in ableton looks so great! Wow. For some reason I never thought about doing that, or really knew that that existed - it seems like such a great way to speed up finding chords in the proper key for someone without a ton of musical experience/theory!
I'm impressed in "Hey, going to show you here casually about arpeggios, let's do a couple chords" and ends up going full-on Vangelis.
As someone with very little music theory knowledge, but a Hapax that will spit out chord inversions of a chosen scale at a touch of some buttons, kick them into an arpeggiator, and then let me do things like Euclidean sequence how those are played, with random chance, something like this arp machine is absolutely an incredible tool to have in your arsenal.
I already loved arpeggios, and Red Means Recording, but love both more after watching this video!
Fantastic demo of a brilliant piece of kit. Thank you Jeremy.
Arp: harp broken in to pieces Agio: comes from agile, you take an axe and brake the harp in to pieces in an agile way hence arpeggio, comes from Latin, means the breaker of the harps. In old days, after breaking harp players instrument you beat the player too as a good measure while people drank and enjoyed themselves.
Thank you
This statement seems regular.
Lol
wait wtf I just wrote a comment about someone thinking it came from the word harp..... why are we still perpetuating this shit lol.
@@smatchimo645 lmao
It'll always amaze me how quickly it seems you can just crank out musical ideas and put them together into a whole song. I only just started this year, but it frustrates me how stuck i get on a single measure, and by the end of the day it still feels iffy and unfinished. Im getting good at transcription though, hopefully with time i can create my own stuff confidently.
My favourite Trill is Jadzia Dax, followed closely by Ezri. Love those Trills.
Nice lol
I'm a Kurozon guy myself.
Jeremy thank you so much for going through this, and for the quick Cthulhu walkthrough! I've been on the fence about the midicake arp and was looking at Cthulhu literally a few hours ago wondering if it could do something similar - this was all just so timely - and _then_ you mention the Sinfonion in passing and I remember that I have a "Minifonion" in the Droid eurorack module and you may have just saved me €500. Okay okay the Droid plus controllers is... more than that but what I'm trying to say is Thank You so much for being so open and joyous about sharing your know-how and insight ❤
I love this world when a one-man company can make an excellent fully realised product. Living in the future!
jesus christ that hamms biking hat is one of the best fashion pieces ive seen in a while, absolutely amazing,, the video is great too i just had to recognized the drip :)
Love how you flaut your knowledge of arpeggios and trills.
love this kind of beer and pretzels content, thanks
e: that doesn't sound complimentary the way I meant it, I love the extremely slick editing that makes this look beer and pretzels
That's amazing I was doing my own research about this this very morning. Thanks a lot!
Very cool demo :) thx for making
Low-energy Jeremy lives to please. I am grateful. Seriously, thank you!
Is no one going to mention the Hamm’s cycling cap?!? Love it!
Great demo ! I've been hovering over this since the early days. Now I just need to find the money. Need a stand-alone box that can do that and I'll be happy !
A fun eurorack arp module is the WMD Arpitecht… many rhythms to apply to the arps, like Cthulhu. Also, with the DeepMind 12d you can program arp rhythms… so yeah, I love arps
Thanks you took me on a Journey keep up the good work.
Ugh
I could listen to you arping for ages. That was a really good groove you had going!
The "I must appease" monologue was both frightening and hilarious (and so true).
Noob question: what were using for your main keyboard there?
I'm pretty sure it's a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S61 (mk2)
Correct
Before "real" synths used arpeggios, home organs and keyboards used them for ages btw. Love them!
Thanks for showing that also with Xfer and Pigments instead of just the hardware.
As an arp enthusiast I found this video to be quite fulfilling. Thank you jjjbbbbbbbbbbbbblllllllllk
Thank you. Excellent as always. CAKE....
Those chord progressions rock! Awesome
@18:51 Red Means Recording goes Kraftwerk and I am here for it!
And for those beautiful piano arps at the beginning, and for the rundown of the plugin arps. The whole damn video, actually. This was great!
That Hamm's hat is so fucking dope.
I didn't know Midicake Arp, it seems to be such a cool gadget to have. I am buying one def +fav tx
Very inspirational! Some real JMJ vibes in there, lovely.
Love you, Jeremy. That‘s all.
What a magical hat!
edit: i would love to see a follow up video about what makes for an effective chord progression.
@@GizzyDillespee Indeed I just want to download the jeremy chord data pack 🎹🎼🤯
Lmbo! I put one in my cart this morning… went back in the afternoon to finish my purchase and it was completely sold out all because of your video…! Great channel btw..
Ahhhh oh no! Hope there's a new batch soon.
I suspect a MV-1, mc101, mc707 etc would go also well with the Midi cake.
Arpeggios are the reason to own an Omnichord or Le Strum.
Logic Pro's arpeggiator is pretty freaking powerful too. You still need to drive the chord with external MIDI but you can do some pretty decent sequencing of the rhythm/velocity/mono-vs-poly switching/etc.
Love the music you made with it. Fuck yea.
Love the channel. I have one question at the beginning. You said up dog? What is up dog?
The midicake thingie reminds me of the NDLR.
You're right, I do need to add an arpeggiator into my midi processor/looper/recorder thingy in Pure Data...
Hey Jeremy quick question from from 2:09 you said 'or updog' but didn't demonstrate. What's updog?
Great stuff dude, very interesting, hope this is under 200 bucks, looks better than the latest roland chord/arp synth
your eyes, they're like arpeggios on fire.
Reminds me a lot of the NDLR, very cool!
love the video! and i saw a little op1 field ahah will you make some content with it?
I might but it's hard for me to go back to that stuff
What’s updog?
checked to see if someone already said it, thank you for your service.
I wish I'd checked first...
I remember as a kid, pouring myself a big bowl of arpeggios, with extra granulated sugar poured on top before sinking it all in milk, and settling in for four unadulterated hours of carbs and cartoons before the fishing and golfing shows came on tv.
So yeah, have loved chthulu for a long time (i have to by law; Deadmaus lives about 15 min. away from me, and he worked (commissioned) on it with Xfer) . Does the Midicake have definite advantages over soft arps? So is that the catch, it can do what a lot if not most of what soft arps can do, but in a pure hardware package? Okay, I'm sold.
The way my jaw physically dropped when your fursona flashed on screen
I fucking love it!
Thanks!
When I moved from AK to WA, everyone was drinking Pabst's. I never understood why they did not drink Hamm's. It's the best dad beer out there and the only hill I die on. Oh yeah, the music is good too.
There's one thing you mentioned early on but never clarified. What's "updog"?
@2:14
We love money and pitches
The faces I made every time you input something new in the Midicake and sonic delights came out: 🥹🥴😵🫨🫠🤩
Awesome video. I've been waiting to see some (your) capable hands on this device. BTW what headphones are you using? Beyerdynamic?
Yup yup
@@RedMeansRecording thanks. I should have asked which model haha
Thanks
“Numb numb numb yummy midi cake good!” Ghost Monster 4/16/23
This could be a sequel to Andrew Huang's "WTF is FM synthesis"
Flute tunes use trills? Neat. Every day's a school day.
Damn it Jeremy. You’re the only UA-camr that I’m consistently pissed off that I can’t Like videos more than once for. Also….. cake 🎂
is this new? looks similar to the ndlr
More Jeremy's Super Happy Existential Dread Hour plz
:49 thought we were getting Claire De Lune there for a second.
Jeremy, idk if you mention it in the recent studio tour, but where did you get your main desk? did you build it or buy it from somewhere?
It's an rta producer station desk I've had forever
Get well soon Jeremy!
2:09 what's updog?
Notes go up, notes go down, can't explain that
2:09 wait wait wait hold on you lost me there for a second, what's updog?
I ❤ arpeggios.
0:54 when Jeremy accidentally starts playing Claire De Lune
Would this work with the Digitakt in some way? MIDI and or sample slot?
5:01 Feed the algorithm!
Jeremy, curious as to how much overlap this and the NDLR have? They seem very similar. If so, do you prefer one over the other?
Fox spotted at exactly 3:08
Hey Jeremy! Question for you as this sounds like something perfect to solve a problem I have. I predominantly use a Launchpad Pro as my controller of choice and use it with my Maschine+. The Launchpad Pro does not have an arp, and the Maschine+ does not run external MIDI inputs through its own arp. Do you think this would be the ideal choice to overcome that? Should I look at other things too? Should I just suck it up and use Maschine's pads for the arp? What do you think?
Use the maschine pads for the arp
Gotta say, that Ableton Arp looks way more feature packed compared to FL Studio.
I kinda don't get the need for a dedicated hardware arp. The keystep has a pretty fully functional arp onboard, and so does nearly every synth I have which alsa has midi
Awesome music contact. But... how do you cope with that noisy keyboard? Clacky.
For someone looking to dabble in hardware generative and fairly simple stuff with a Microfreak + Tooro with some pedals, would you say the Midicake might be the best place to start? It looks like a NDLR on steroids.
Also bring back Arpeggio🦊 👀👉👈
can you use poly pressure to assign to e.g rhythm slip or octave ?
gr8 arp overview .
Not sure. Check manual?
@@RedMeansRecording koowl, the OSMOSE synth arpeggiator has got me open about what’s possible with melody and timing… after seeing Andrew H’s overview. Anyhoo great stuff as usual… refreshing to hear you play sonata’s 🎹👾
If I connect this to a hardware synth without an arpeggiator would it arpeggiate the hardware synth allowing me to hear the actual sounds of the hardware synth?
Have you ever played with a NDLR? Seems they are a bit different but also pretty similar?
Might be this is a bit easier to work with maybe?
I haven't
Hi, what about the keystep 37 internal arpeggiator compared with this one?
This absolutely flounces the 37s arp
I ordered one of these a few hours ago. I am very excited to integrate it into my chillwave setup lol
Where did you get that awesome hat?
Search for Hamm's cycling cap
If that dog is actually a cake I’m going to lose it. I’ve been through that “everything is a cake” reality. Twice!
Love me some cake made for the content monster
is it me or is the midicake arp basically the same as NDLR?
Your video on consumerism is super cool!
How long did one take to ship to you?
7:49 reminds me of tenet
Turtle neck Jeremy where are you?!
Grabbed mine after meeting the Midicake guys at SynthEast, such a powerful little box of tricks.
I feel like you might have sold the rest of their stock for this run :)
MUST APPEASE 👿
pLeAsE ThE CoNTenT hOrRoRs! CReeeeeAtE!
Cant we call them note step moving chord
I keep forgetting that you used to be a flautist! Have you ever thought of incorporating flute into your music (apologies if you have, I'm just not aware of any of your music having flute in it!). I used to play sax in the 80s/90s as a preteen and don't want to be anywhere near it now (sold it to buy a guitar and sold that guitar to buy a Virus), but I was never good at it.
I am dedicating this month to 30 minutes a day of practice with the Roland aerophone and hope to I corporate it more into my work
what's updog?
