It's been almost 11 years since i deleted facebook. The one thing that feels bad about doing that is how estranged i ended up from everybody. No idea anymore what's going on in peoples lives because they only share on social media. The absolute worst experience was the time i had to battle cancer and friends and family would only visit me on facebook. That's when i quit. Bumped into some people later and they actually said Yeah you were off facebook all of a sudden so there was no way to ask how you were doing. It's has become very rare to visit somebody or having people visit me. They have no time left it seems and when it happens they are burried in their phones the entire time. This feels like the zombie apocalypse to me and i hate it. Channels like this keep me sane.

Thank you for sharing. I say this selfishly because your post really hit home for me. My own social media exit was under less dramatic circumstances (no illness, no drama really, just a realization that it was adding nothing good to my life while injecting avoidable poison into too much of it) but the result was the same. No one seems to know how (or, worse, feel any reason) to engage with others in real life anymore. Everyone says they are lonelier than they've ever been but we still insist on settling for a sad and paltry facsimile of human contact rather than the real thing. Leaving social media ejected me into the void and I didn't so much lose my friends as find out, to my horror, that I didn't mean much to them in the first place. After attempting to maintain real world contact with the ones I actually cared about it became clear that they simply couldn't be bothered. Being a real live person rather than a mediated "Friend" was apparently too much trouble. Real relationships are just too much work, when you can feel as though you are doing your best for everyone by simply "liking" a post on their "wall" now and again and contenting yourself that you've done all you can in this deplorable modern corruption of human interaction. I'm less immediately depressed now than I was when I had Fakebook breathing down my neck 24/7 but I think I'm actually far and away more existentially depressed than ever at the realization of how little I actually matter as anything besides a cascade of ones and zeroes. Flesh and blood is very cheap these days and getting cheaper all the time.

Same here. During illness I found myself getting 'messages' but very few visitors. These are 'friends', they say. The problem that I face now is complete invisibility. My family forgot about me too. Right now I have isolated myself in a way that is unhealthy. But this has also turned me into one of the strogest minds inside my inner circle. A little bit of cynicism to avoid conflicts, but overall I am much more prepared for 'harshness' and less inclined to fake-realities (the narratives most people dwell nowadays).

This channel stands out, but overwhelmingly the nature of the algorithm, metrics, and the lack of any coherent context on the home page or in the sub box render even some of the most well meaning channels into repetitive, shallow, bite-sized pieces of infotainment regurgitated from now irrelevant or outdated videos.

I love the art of conversation, something I find missing in todays younger generation. I work with young people who are incapable of carrying out simple instructions as they cannot concentrate. When challenged, they're quick to tell the boss they 'feel bullied' yet think it is fine to be idle whilst on the clock. Regardless of management style, too many simply do not want to do hard work. I have always thought the idea of 'posting your life online' is pure narcissism. Advertising has a lot to answer for, and we all should understand the process behind selling products. The areas that have exploded in popularity during Covid-19 are a true measure of what society has become.

Part of growing up is being able to make mistakes and learn from them without thousands or even millions of people watching and expecting you to be or react a certain way or keeping track of your every move leaving you paralyzed and afraid to just be. Live your private life and make your mistakes, learn your lessons, and do this knowing you won’t have to answer to anyone but yourself. You will change, adapt and grow but only if you give yourself the liberty to do so without having to pretend or maintain an image. You’re allowed to change your mind, your style, your lifestyle, your major lol! literally everything is accessible to you to change and it’s part of discovering who you truly want to be. It’s a beautiful thing.. live it up!

Yeah, it's just difficult now due to the abundance of information. It was easier for people to consume and engage with material back then because they would go to a public library, and there would be a considerable amount of books on certain topics. Now, it's just an endless sea of information flying before our eyes and entire histories of civilizations summarized in 10-minute videos. My point is, it's easier to be engaged when options are limited.

My thoughts flow free without alteration and are a lot more grounded in reality. I get along with all sorts of people, even if they may lay on a completely different side of my political compass, I’m still able to hold conversation with them and even understand some of their reasonings without worrying about my own integrity. I find more fun in doing hobbies, and have grown more patient, rational, and free. I dropped social media in 2017, but still my life is affected by its tentacles. My family and friends are so invested in it that every social gathering with them is interrupted by a notification and an announcement of what they just saw on FB or whatever SM app they are using at that moment. When one becomes annoyed by the continuous disruptions from their phones, they look at you as if you intruded upon their time. This is why I don't even get excited about meeting up with them anymore. I always make other arrangements to spare myself the disappointment.

I lost friendship with a friend of 40 years. She just seemed to became someone else and a person that I had talked to for 40 years seemed to not accept any words I would say. I said to her. I don’t get it, I am talking to you just like I always have but it’s not working now. You are not the same. After hearing this about Profilicity, it seems to me that maybe her identity became so entwined in her profile image, and she felt I was not supporting her in the way she now saw herself, because I knew a different her, so she just became dissatisfied with me. I would try to understand and apologize for what I was not even sure. Over and over this began to happen until I just didn’t want to talk to her anymore.
I feel like I understand more of what happened now.

But certain ideas like simple self preservation for White people - a population in decline at the same time of having historically staggeringly high rates of immigration by high birthrate populations - it's not something you'd ever need to change your mind on. I used to strongly identify as a feminist, and even transgender, but I still did a 180 on that after seeing - for example - feminism is just a collection of unchallenged assumptions by people who think that the supposed sexists are the ones making the assumptions. In reality, it's the egalitarian claims which tend to be the assumptions, which are destroyed when met with critical thinking and studying.

For example, an alleged feminist neuroscientist made an attempt to rebuttal the evidence of more intelligence in males based on the fact make brains are larger. She laughable pointed out that speem whales - a completely different species with way more nerves in their nervous system and way more muscles - have larger brains than humans despite being less intelligent. I female researcher actually devised a way to count the number of neurons in brains, and found that primates - including humans - have equally dense brains, convert 8 brain density allows us to have 86 billion neurons, which would be impossible if we had the brain density of other species. She discovered we have the most neuron-dense brains measured. This means if you're comparing male human and female human brains, they are equally dance and therefore the larger brain will have even more neurons or more neural connections, which doesn't necessarily mean more intelligence, but it obviously is one factor which boosts intelligence. If size didn't matter, then we would still have brains the size of our primitive hominid ancestors

It's been my observation that celebrities, generally speaking, tend to be deeply dysfunctional people, especially if they become famous young. This was, and is, in large part because their whole identity is dependent on how other people think about them. Now, almost everyone is exposed to the conditions that create this mindset. From a psychological standpoint, it's rather fascinating to watch this unfold.
I would argue that getting rid of our devices isn't the answer. That would only reduce our ability to communicate. Rather that we must train ourselves not to define our self-worth by the opinions of others.

Controlled substances cause physical and chemical alterations to the body that make it impossible to control one's impulses. Either you win by getting a lot of likes, views, and comments, or you lose by getting few likes, few comments, and a bunch of people talking crap about you.The pressure of staying relevant is always going to be there no matter what. @@metalrockstarizer89 So anything that has an addictive quality should be classed as a controlled substance? That is a path of madness. There comes a point where you have to stop blaming the thing and look at oneself. You will be hard-pressed to find a technological advance that didn't have something negative associated with it. Do we wind back the clock to get rid of the bad? Do you keep it wound back? The human condition would not allow that for long. People are at their best looking forward, not backward.

You can say I'm something of a Luddite. At this point, however, I'm glad I never took to social media. Even at my age, many of my peers are consumed by it. Overall, it subtracts from life in general.
When I finally did dive into social media due to having an online business, I tended to anger people & get banned fairly often. The business tanked & I rarely peek at my "profiles" these days. Don't even miss it. Only check for those acquaintances occasionally seeking to make contact. A few times a year is more than enough. It's a cesspool.

I feel as though I am always seeking to communicate with people online (actually trying to be social) and theres no substance to them. I also get left on read or people simply like a message as a way of ending the conversation. We think that we have friends online but they aren't really our friends. We know nothing about them. All the while we are worrying so much about our online social life we are literally avoiding our real in person social life. The people we see face to face are the ones that matter, not the profiles that only exist through a screen.

Thank you for another AWESOME video. It is accurate and insightful. The changing nature of the formation of a social identity was absolutely fascinating. As was the concept of being both prisoner and guard. It is rather bone-chilling to witness the blind acceptance of the manipulative qualities of social media by the public. In my life, I have noticed the ostracizing effects of non-participation. I do not maintain an active, or timely, presence on social media. I have never been able to muster up the enthusiasm to participate in it. And, I have zero interest in maintaining a manufactured, manicured, and curated image for consumption. Therefore, I no longer exist to many people I used to know. C'est la vie. Thanks again, guys!

I would say that people feel a need to be “seen” by others. Maybe that’s what they’re going for?
Getting a social media post “liked” feels like a gain because it’s validating. It’s like a little kid trying to grab the attention of an adult by saying, “Hey, look what I can do! Look at me!”
How important is it to be “seen”? And what if one were to go through life and NEVER be seen, or recognized, or known? Social media addiction works by appealing to very deep human desires.

This is thee best analysis of why all social media is sickening society I've ever heard/watched. Thank you! I only ever had FB and have always questioned how much of it I controlled and how much I was being controlled. I'm a minimalist so aware of the constant advertising which always bothered me. I have noticed in the past 15 yrs., my nieces and nephews, raising their kids 15 yrs and younger, have had their lives, without their permission or consent (obviously a 2 yr old has no clue @ permission) documented in pictures, captions, comments and judgments... since birth. (Technically before w/sonogram images). I feel so badly for these kids!!!Their privacy has been completely stripped from them. Every piano recital where they messed up, nervous and cute and played....ok...not Mozart level but FINE(appropriate for a 8 yr old!) shown to the entire world. Can't form their own memories inc "I was just perfect at that recital! it was such fun," cause the video shows them stopping, breathing, starting over, slumped shoulders and a whole bunch of ppl commenting "It's ok you messed up! You made it through in the end!" If it wasn't on social media, they might remember it as a great success. Period. Before my 36 yr old, highly addicted to social media (every acct she's posting all day every day..what she eats, who she's with ugh) niece gave birth 4 yrs ago to her first kid, she opened an Instagram account. Immediately after giving birth began publishing photos of her. This kid's entire identity is being shaped and formed by complete strangers on the web who comment and judge (Ohh that's a cute moment or Ohhh doesn't she have a nasty little temper-then LOL) everywhere: FB, Insta, Tik Tok etc. This is so psychologically ill. A collective mental disorder. In France 2015 (?) the first law suite filed by a teen against her parents for using her image for years without her permission or consent. My kids, now in their 20s, don't want me posting pics of them unless it is a very public event, like receiving a diploma at college graduation, and then limiting the number of pictures to 2 or 1. Also, removing the post after a few months so that even though it's stored, archived by FB, it's no longer visible to public. I'm deactivated from FB and never was on any other social media. It's scary! And a time waster.

I feel like social media is a matrix that you need to break out of to become self aware. People get sucked into the consumer lifestyle or don’t see that they’re being used for attention and clicks, that they are the product. Instead most just constantly bicker and argue in endless echo chambers. Not realising that the internet is simply and engineering tool that responds to feedback. I do think, however, that the social media bubble will burst somewhat in the coming years once what it is doing to people is fully exposed and the money runs out.
I find it incredible that Facebook doesn’t charge three quarters of the globe to use their app and store all the garbage on their servers. The storage space of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram and they’re all free. Nobody asks this question.
