It wasn't so much them leaving, as it was many being fired after their cancelled game in 2012.
It was the reason Obsidian ultimately went back to their roots with the Pillars of Eternity-kickstarter.

This team needs to work on another Fallout. It’s a shame that Chris Avellone isn’t at Obsidian anymore. I’m sure a lot of the New Vegas devs are gone now. The band needs to get back together. Although I know it’ll never happen.
