  • The world is constantly changing and tourism businesses and destinations need to understant possible future changes to stay competitive and to become more resilient. In this video I explain the VUCA world (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity), how it relates to tourism and discuss strategic foresight as a structured and systematic process to anticipate possible futures and to develop future-proof strategies. Strategic Foresight involves taking a long-term perspective and will allow you to better prepare for any upcoming disruptive changes.

    The pandemic showed us that we live in a VUCA world. I think especially the fact that boarders closed (not only) for tourism was a big shock for many businesses and people. Better (mental) preparedness for such scenarios beforehand would have helped for sure to cope with it.

      Absolutely, that's why I want raise awareness of the benefits of engaging in foresight. Obviously it would not have prevented the pandemic, but adding wild card scenarios might have helped. Although accepting wild cards as possible futures is difficult.
