This is the "CALL of all RACE CALLS".... "The Two Derby Winners Hit The Wire Together"! I imitate Tom Durkin and this race call around my wife periodically, she thinks I'm silly!!!! I remember this race like it was yesterday! And my version is all over the place, but it works! I get a laugh out of my wife every time!
I've watched this probably thirty times and I get a chill up my spine every time Durkin screams " Alysheeba on the outside" Greatest race call ever. Only thing close is Peter Bromleys call of Shergar winning the Epsom Derby.
i was there! i was 12 years old, and horseracing was my favorite thing in the world. seeing alysheba and ferdinand storm down the final stretch was something i'll never forget. lots of memorable races that day.
Good morning. I am 100% agree with you. Both Ferdinand and Alysheba deserved to win 1987 Breeder´s Cup Classic. Tom Durkin was, is and will one of the best call horse racing of the world. But Venezuelan Virgilio Decan "Aly Khan" was, is and will be the best of the world. Greetings from Venezuela.
Yes a great ride by Shoemaker, and for that matter McCarron. Just so tragic that Hollywood Park is now just a memory. Why on earth was it just left to deteriorate?
That's slot of real estate, I think the real answer is off track betting, you have to experience it live, to really love it. Most of the people at otb are just gamblers, all the tracks they bet on ..
Doper filled joker sport loaded with career cheats, propped up by corrupt racing officials for decades, and loads of gambling addicts. That’s why! Glad it and it’s addicts are gone. 😆😆😆
"Two of the sport´s most famous trainers saddled the Derby winners in that Classic, with Charlie Wittingham sending out Ferdinand, and Jack van Berg saddling Alysheba. Charlie had me on Ferdinand and Jack had Chris McCarron in the irons on Alysheba. BotChris and I knew we were sitting on dynamite that Day" Bill Shoemaker (1931-2003)
👍👍When those 4 horses line up across the track, you've got my 4 greatest jockeys ever battling. Laffit Pincay, with a little left at the rail. Eddie D. Always has something left.on the Judge, Bill Shoemaker at 56 waiting, waiting, to not hit the front to early, Chris McCarran, pumping away the last 50.. what a horserace.. ❤️🙏👉🇺🇸
Note: Notice the crowd noise you vividly hear in this race. These days (2020) when watching a replay you cannot hear the crowd noise, because I believe today it's muted for whatever reason. The crowd noise during this race gives me chills.
My First Breeders cup....Kinda hard to beat that, Lucky to be there.... but now all the rest are not even close. I still appreciate all the races though!!!
i remember bein there watching this race with my father. My father n grandfather were huge racing fans in southern calif ... this is by far one of my favorite races ever
I worked in CW's office in Sierra Madre, CA so it was an easy drive to Hollywood Park. Didn't go to Kentucky for the Derby. Was SO wonderful to be there in person, too see Ferdinand win the Classic!
My first full year following horse racing, my first Breeders Cup, absolutely nailed this race but that's not why it still gives me tingles to watch, wow!
Is there a Durkin interview talking about this call? He knew two Derby winners were in the race obviously, but the way the race unfolded and how he captured it perfectly. PERFECT. It had to happen just that way, and he was ready for it. I’d love to know the exact moment he strung out that phrase in his mind. The other thing is Shoemaker. Man did he know Ferdinand. Getting him away from the inside was a must, and he didn’t hesitate. He knew he had a bully horse for that. Then allowing him to glide down the home stretch until the last 1/8 when he needed to get it ALL out of him to the wire. Alysheba blew away the field, except the barrel chested chestnut who was playing catch me if you can.
What was Alysheba like 7 wide when he came around the far turn and hit the stretch, never should of lost that race and I like Ferdinand a lot but Alysheba was the better horse.
Pretty good call by Durkin, I still prefer the call by Chic Anderson in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup. It was a race between Seattle Slew, Affirmed and Exceller.
Probably Durkin's best call ever. The roar of the crowd as they reach the top of the stretch gets louder and louder. Spine Tingling!
Love his exasperation at the end. He barely makes it to the final call.
burp
I don't think any racecaller can top Tom Durkin to this day. He is simply the best!

After watching Thoroughbred racing for nearly 50 years this is the ONLY race that gives me chills.
YEP
1973 Belmont Stakes didnt give you chills???
I've watched this probably thirty times and I get a chill up my spine every time Durkin screams " Alysheeba on the outside" Greatest race call ever.
Only thing close is Peter Bromleys call of Shergar winning the Epsom Derby.
This was one of the greatest races and calls
ever!

andalepues Me too. All my friends loved football and basketball. I liked them too but nothing gave me the thrill of a great stretch run like this.
ahsan shaikh Me three... I was 17... what a race!

Do you still remember it? Do you remember who won?
The two derby winners hit the wire together!! One of the greatess calls of all time
i think it was the greatest call of all time
westbound so unfortunate that he never got to call a triple crown winner. To me he was the greatest of all time.
Great call for gambling addict losers. 😆😆😆
Never get tired of watching this one. Two phenomenal champions...what an incredible race and an incredible call by Durkin!!

Probably the best call of any race I've ever seen.
Simply outstanding.

YEA SHOE LIKE STATUE STILL TAPED FER' FOR THE WIN HISTORIC
The real tragedy is Ferdinand. 😢
Chills down my spine every time I see that stretch drive.

durkin has had so many great calls but i think this the best 89 classic a close second
This classic and the 2 with Tiznow are epic!
the glory days of Inglewood,CA...
OMG! Still get the chills listening to Tom Dirkins call of this classic race! This is my favorite of all race calls!
R.I.P. Ferdinand, Alysheba, Charlie Whittingham, Bill Shoemaker, Jack Van Berg, Dick Enberg and Hollywood Park
@JerGer918
And R.I.P. Peggy Boone Whittingham.

Wow. What a race from an incredibly star studded cast!
The greatest Racecourse commentary of all time absolutely brilliant
Phenomenal race. One of the best ever!

captain Spaulding LOL

Well, in 2020 there is no crowd. It's a shame..
My First Breeders cup....Kinda hard to beat that, Lucky to be there.... but now all the rest are not even close. I still appreciate all the races though!!!
What a race! Sad what happened to Ferdinand.
@Mario Raez
I was there to see it in person--it was thrilling! Yet look what became of him...truly sad.

THE TWO DERBY WINNERS HIT THE WIER TOGETHER like bro thats the best
My first full year following horse racing, my first Breeders Cup, absolutely nailed this race but that's not why it still gives me tingles to watch, wow!
Fantastic race by 2 Champions 🏆that race had lots of talent in it classic 👏

Watch the turf classic at Santa Anita, 2003 a dead heat. Epic call by Tom!
Tom Durkin's Best Call Ever
What a race!
So true. A flawless and brilliant call of a great race.
Was there ever a horse with more try and guts than Alysheba?
ZENYATTA!!!
Alysheba’s bloodline spells Alydar. Triple crown winner if not for affirmed.
Emotonal race no doubt
Poor Judge Angelucci. He ran his heart out and just missed!!
Boy did the US let that boy down. Leaving him stranded in Japan to die a most gruesome horrifying way.
Sorry Ferdinand 😢
Track announcer: Tom Durkin
Great field. Great race.
THE 2 DERBY WINNERS HIT THE WIRE TOGETHER
HOW GREAT IS TOM DURKIN
pugskins the greatest of all time
Shoe was the best!
this race call up there with des scargill dawn run. peter bromley desert orchid
What was Alysheba like 7 wide when he came around the far turn and hit the stretch, never should of lost that race and I like Ferdinand a lot but Alysheba was the better horse.
Watch Alyshebas next 3 races, you are right sir! Still a little immature here, when he came back as a 4yr. Old, whata monster..
What a disgrace that Ferdinand ended up in a slaughter house. There are no depths to some people's greed
Had a piece of that.
I just watched that race 3 times...did Shoe even use his whip, at all?
Ciaran Kelly yes, I saw him use it 3x
Would've been fined these days..
THE BEST!
I always liked FERDINAND I said him Win the KENTUCKY DERBY
I was 21 i was there
Agreed on Durkin's call. Now he's watered it down too much
Pretty good call by Durkin, I still prefer the call by Chic Anderson in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup. It was a race between Seattle Slew, Affirmed and Exceller.
How is it possible Ferdinand ended up at a slaughter house?
Saying it was Durkin's best call ever is not saying much. He will never compare to Dave Johnson or Chick Anderson.
Poor Ferdinand. All that effort he put in for his masters and what did he get in return . A Japanese slaughter house.
Doper sport propped up by corrupt racing officials and gambling addicts. 😆😎😎
🐂
