Thank you Jon. My on camera "personality" kinda sucks. Others including my Wife & my Son have told me this. So I do my videos unscripted without Audiophile/Audiophool Adjectives. My friend that lent me the DAC has 1000x better on camera demeanor than I. He saw this Video prior to my making it Public and was cool with. Understand that I'm not sponsored, nor do I do Patreon. My channel is for informational purposes and my thoughts only. Other the Terminator DAC, everything in my Video's - I own !
Once in a while I'll do a Video Review on a product that's mine only because of my excitement/love/improvements in Audio Reproduction and so forth.

Unbelievable! Finally a review of the Terminator that I agree with. Subscribed. The Termi is a stellar DAC but some tracks come out as relatively weak in the upper mids. But for the most part I love the DAC and it was in my main system until I found the Audio GD R7 (2020 version). It's from china and is $1700 less expensive than the Terminator. The Termi has a little more high frequency detail but the R7 is no slouch in that regard, and it beats the Termi in the upper mids category IMO. It also has more bass slam than the Termi and it's toneful at the same time. Not just a thump sound like a bass drum. Pianos sound really great on both the Termi and the R7 but again, the R7 is a little better at recreating that natural tone that's difficult to reproduce. I would not classify it as "soft" though, as I would the PS Audio DirectStream.

Back in 2017 I bought the Denafrips Terminator and it replaced a PS Audio Dac senior screen glitches and all handily ,.
Like your Audio GD R7 in 2019 a friend came over with a AudioByte Hydra Vox dac manufactured in Romania which sold for about $1300.00 less then the Denafrips.
We played with each dac in our own systems then I sold the Terminator, also the Vox dac has an outstanding purpose built headphone section which turned me on for listening with headphones especially late at night ,..
The Denafrips is a good dac however maybe it’s overpriced,,.

@@marks.2909 It's a good thing that we have different opinions. Makes the world go 'round. I'm a complete DAC obsessed music lover and have owned a lot of 'em. The Audiobyte is a different kind of DAC than the Terminator which is an R2R ladder DAC. The Hydra/Vox is a good DAC but I like the presentation of the Terminator. To me it's more analog, and instruments sound very authentic, not an idealized version of them. Seems like there's too much processing going on in the Audiobyte.. The Audiobyte is a good deal though and is a good value. Again, to each his own.

I don’t own either dac so I’m not any fanboy of either.
What about talking about whether instruments and voice sound realistic as opposed to artificial.
Or maybe what the speed of each dac is like with music? The speed and clarity of bass? How big it narrow the soundstage is. Whether it’s realistic.Etc etc.
The remote thing wouldn’t worry me as I wouldn’t spend my time switching back and fourth. That’s more of a reviewer issue. If anyone is doing that at home normally then they have lost passion for music and are only interested in equipment.

So here's the thing about my style of "reviewing". I don't use flowery Audiophile Adjectives and yet I understand what they all mean. There are others on UA-cam who are better at it than me. I've been playing with Audio since I was a kid (for 37 years at least - I'm 51 now). If something sounds good, great, awesome, Fucking Awesome !, I'll report it as that. If something sounds like crap, shit, or Fucking Shitty, I'll keep that to myself unless I've bought the product and have "skin in the game". Companies don't send me stuff to review but locally, I'll get DAC's and Speakers from friends and ask their permission before posting a review on my Channel.

I was in between taking down the KEF R3's and the Open Baffle Project Speakers build. I am setting up just the R3's this week and will do a formal review between the two without it taking 40 freakin' minutes like my fellow Canucks up in T.O. (Audio Excellence Canada).
I'll do a UA-cam Video and do as you described and see if I get the same results. I do have Sunlight installed and am enjoying it but honestly, I'll need to to a qualitative listening session like I did for the LS 50 Meta's and regular LS50. I had considered the Denafrips for my Parasound JC2/JC5/Focal Sopra 2 setup. What stopped me was the lack of availability due to China's shut-downs back in March and also the lack of a trial period. I ended up buying a Schiit Yggydrasil A2 and really like it. Previously, I had a Mytek Brooklyn DAC+ which was very good with high-res files but really unforgiving to older, less well-recorded music like Led Zeppelin.

I bought a Gungnir Mulitbit and LOVE it! A month after I bought it though, they started offering the Yggy with A1 boards for a couple hundred more, wish I had gone that route! I would consider the Denafrips, but not being able to demo the unit on my system before buying is pretty much a non-starter. Also, service consists of over the phone troubleshooting with them sending you replacement boards...which doesn't really appeal either. Looks like a well made product, they just need to get dealer and service networks in place.

@@joeygsaudiochannel3972 A general rule of thumb, which I applied during my time in retail, as well using myself in my own systems, is to spend about 10% of your total budget on cables. So yeah, spending $1000 on a pair of interconnects for your $800 DAC doesn't make ANY sense! You will usually find better performance spending that money on better core components, like speakers, amps, sources, or DACs. However, I did find some great cables that DID make a HUGE improvement. Check out "Anticables" for speaker wire...they are simply thick gage oxygen free solid copper with the least amount of insulating material they could get away with...and they are both cheap AND sound great! (starting at $50/pair!) For interconnects, you really need to LISTEN to Black Cat. I got their entry level "Silverstar" digital coax cable...in a word, "wow"! This is going from my Node 2i to my Schiit Gungnir multibit DAC. Then I got a set of their entry level "Coppertone" RCAs. Again, huge results from the money spent. The Silverstar is about $300, the Coppertones were $200. I also was EXTREMELY skeptical of the benefits of aftermarket power cords...but a dealer friend of mine loaned me some Audioquest Z3 cables. More benefit than I could have imagined! It all matters, man. Don't go overboard, but don't make the mistake I did and listen using crappy cable for years! :)

I finally saw sense to not rush into it but being void of demonstration opportunities, i was very close to just blindly buying the Denefrips' cheaper model because It got rave reviews online plus it's time i upgraded my day. When i first began buying above the budget hi-fi realm (for me it's a means to an end in better appreciating music rather than a 'Hobby' per se) ...i always preferred the sound of equipment employing discrete transistors & components compared to that using op-amp counterparts, everyone did in the 80's, so these resistor-ladder dacs made perfect sense ...theoretically at least. Now i'm being wary, this Terminator also had stellar reviews. but i don't like the sound of overly prominent midrange as i'm not lacking there & i sometimes use my speaker crossover's high-filter on my Tannoys 15" dual concentric (horn-loaded frequencies above 1 Khz) on recordings tilted towards higher frequencies. It sure is a risk & I cant say "i wish they had a distributor here" for demo/ refund deals because double price comes with that. I think i'll wait to hear more before i take the risk of blind-buying a Denefrips from China via Singapore (i'm told), but i may eventually risk it & expect to loose 30 - 40% on resale if i dislike it. 'p.s. 'Oversampling Mode' turned off made the sound less forward in higher frequencies according to 1 review on-tube from Canadian Thomas (can't recall site name)

I'd have to disagree with you on that Mark. Understand that the FPGA based PS Audio DAC gets a free update from time to time. If one doesn't like the new update, they can easily pick any of the older software versions to suit their taste. I did this review with the Windom version of software and as I'd mentioned in the Video heard differences between the DAC's that in my setup, always favored the PS Audio DAC. Again, there were times were I could not hear the differences between the two DAC's.

@@joeygsaudiochannel3972 im not saying the ps audio has no merits or that its an inherently bad dac but its not enough gun in the gun fight for the outlay, its always passable but never astounding or inciteful in away i can get behind let alone get from other dacs its a safe middle ground at best but not a keep for life or stop striving for more, i mean look at the over priced dcs or msb dacs they preform and sound better but what would you pay for that pleasure, for similar money a tt2(still a half measure) or a bit more a Dave more or less easily trounces the ps dac , i dont want to argue the issues with those updates but they arnt necessarily a strength(iv only heard two versions), i guess if it was the price of the jr i would recommend it to more ppl but the value is simply not there, and really that people looking in this price point should spend half or less or a bit more, i think this price point represents the worst value overall.

Oh Boy.....I'm not a fan of ASR but I did watch the interview he Amir with Joe'N'Tell. Amir knows his stuff, no argument there, and he seems like a pretty cool educated person.
I've said and so have Nelson Pass, Paul McGowan, Darren Myers, Dan D'Agostino, Ted Smith, and so many other respected Engineers in the Audiophile World. You Baseline your design to have the best specs. Then you add the flavors to make them come alive. Voice them so that the masses like what they hear so the end product actually sells, and that's it. That's not distortion, that's adding harmonics to the product for a more listenable experience. Of course they are coloring the sound, all the good companies do it so that we can listen to their products without hours of fatigue.
Speakers are the worst offender's when it comes to distortion. Pucks in your net Ray.

Nah...I said in the Video how I felt about the product. It's sound equaled the DSSr. in many ways but certain music tracks, the DSSr. edged out the Terminator. R2R Ladder DAC's have come a long way since the 1980's. Just look at the Holo May DAC by Kitsune. I've heard that one too but never got a chance to do a "head to head" against the DSSr..
Features....lacking the remote is a huge one. I know folks that shied away from Denefrips and went Holo Spring or May because of it. Also, why all the RJ-45 I2S inputs ?. Holo gives you 2 HDMI I2S which is how I did the review and how my DSSr. is used. One for DSD, the other for PCM. Since Kitsune came out with their top line DAC's at the same price as Denefrips. Denefrips is now just a footnote in the DAC war's of 2020/2021.
But I'll stand by my DSSr. till I die !

I had the latest ps audio with snow mass firmware , the Denafrips terminator was more defined better bass
As well as imaging, the ps audio had a bit more tube softer leading edge , that doesnot make it better inside pc audio built like crap ,not even in the same ball park the Denafrips big dual Torroidal tons of $$ caps
And over 140 filter caps and precision 4 R-R2R ladders with resistors bettering .005 for $4400 delivered
A n9 Brainer, for $6400 ps audio money the 44 lb Terminatir plus Destroys it literally
It can compete with any dac 2-3 times its cost , when I can afford it thst will be my center piece and I have had a bunch od well known dacs and parts quality mainly US and Europe and tested several times over 100+
Hours before even shipped , China as a country I may not care for but Vinshine in Singapore has strict QC parameters.

The Terminator DOES NOT destroy or is better the the PS Audio DirectStream Sr. DAC. At times, I couldn't hear a difference between the two but in the end, as I mentioned in the video, Ted Smith's FPGA based DAC won over the Terminator's Resistor to Resistor Ladder DAC.
Before you trash PS Audio, understand that I will always be biased towards ANY product Made in the USA, Canada, or Mexico along with certain European Brands that are made in Europe. Myself being a casualty of Electronics Manufacturing being outsourced to China, I will always have a sorespot for Chi-Fi. Yes, I do have some Chi-Fi stuff only because it was the only source I could find for those products.
Again, spending north of $4k USD on a product without listening to it and without 30 day trial period is a NO GO with many of my Audiophile friends and of course myself.
