Yes. It has stood the test of time.
I recently watched the movie for the first time on the big screen at theatres, for the 25th anniversary. Some of the strengths which stood out to me:
    - CGI effects aren't _that_ bad - due to the fact that CGI was still in its relative infancy at the time, filmmakers had to do more with less (they had to actually work hard). I thought they did a clever job at weaving the CG into the special effects and set pieces. The CG is fitting, like it naturally belongs in the world and doesn't look out of place
    - The pod racing scene is an incredibly shot and choreographed sequence with genuine tension and emotion
    - John Williams score - I do not speak merely of the famous Duel of the Fates theme but the general background music which complements both dramatic and casual scenes
    - Furthermore, this movie generally has some of the most incredible sound design/effects, sound editing & mixing I've ever heard
    - Atmosphere - I felt like I was IN the Star Wars universe. It may be a lesser Star Wars film, but it still _feels_ like a Star Wars film, unlike the Disney sequels which didn't have that same...magic
    - Liam Neeson is one of my favourite casting choices of all time. I consider Qui-Gon Jinn to be the 'perfect' depiction of everything a Jedi should be in terms of appearance, temperment, charm, mannerisms, style, etc.
    - The politics of Star Wars - unlike many others, this was a subplot I actually enjoyed not just about The Phantom Menace but the prequels as a whole. The political undertone serves an adequate purpose in terms of being the foundation of the sinister element surrounding the mystery of the sith, which the next 2 movies would build upon and utilise in terms of transitioning the status quo from Jedi rule to Sith takeover
Thanks for reading. If you haven't already, I highly recommend the 'making of' documentary of The Phantom Menace. The amount of craftsmanship and attention to detail the filmmakers put into this project is absolutely staggering. George Lucas clearly poured his heart and soul into it. I feel it deserves at least some appreciation.

I was a kid when they all came out, saw em all in the theatres. No complaints really. As a kid all you focus on is the flashy stuff so growing up it was nice to actually follow a consistent story line unlike the Disney saga, Very different feels, Even though I was older once those ones had come out. The point is (1 + 2 + 3) I still can watch and get something new from most times. Can't say the same for (7, 8, 9). take with that what you will.

This isn't even mentioning the hype in the schoolyards with how good the Pod-Racing and end Duel was. If this doesn't excite you, I don't know how to tell you this but I think you don't like the "world" of Star Wars

I love the prequels and KOTOR because the galaxy’s mostly at peace.. hopefully they bring this vibe back in the post-sequel trilogy

It is not better than it was 25 years ago. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. It was good then. It’s still good now

No, it will always will be a disappointing film(s).
What it does have going for it is that it was at least made by one person who wasn't beholden to a corporate board room. Compared to the sequels which are a corporate mess, the prequels are at least made by someone who cared about them and tried to tell a story. Lucas may have failed to execute his artistic vision, but at least he tried to make art.
Audiences want a return to artists telling stories (which the prequels are), not more corporate products designed to meet engagement metrics (which the sequels are). And this is what people are responding to regarding the prequels - those movies are bad, but only in the way that art is bad when made by an artist who at least tried. We all respect Lucas for trying even if the end product didn't live up to expectations.
We'd rather see 5 failed films made by people who at least tried rather than 1 more corpo Disney / Marvel "entertainment product".

The problem is that the annoying, always complaining portion of the Star Wars fandom only seems to know about one thing: Star Wars. When you listen to them "reasoning" it appears like they have never watched anything else. So when a new SW movie or series comes out, that has something in it, that wasn't previously mentioned in an older SW thing, they absolutely lose it and start hyperventilating.

Even the original trilogy was flawed, and often overrated, as film in an absolute sense - but Star Wars was also bigger, and better, simply as a mythological concept, than it could ever be realized on the screen. Empire did the best in fulfilling the franchise's potential, while Jedi became more childish than childlike in its approach, a problem that would plague the series as it continued. The Phantom Menace was simply a bad movie, although I agree the films are more enjoyable overall in a climate of reduced expectations that are modest at best. Star Wars is not the be all and end all of film, fiction or mythology. Anyone who had their childhood "assaulted" by a bad Star Wars film is taking Star Wars far too seriously.

No matter how much you try to rationalize things, the original films were well crafted and entertaining. The prequels were neither.

@@Malt454 No .. The originals were classics because they were great movies. You can pretend they're 'overrated', but I'd say you're full of it. I bet you thought that new Dune movie was a work of genius comparable to a Kubrick movie or something. 😂 They're flawed, but they're not overrated.

@@Fiveash-Art- Oh, you're one of these "I bet..." people who think they can read people's minds. Lol. I'd say you're full of it right there. The new Dune movies are alright, but they're not much of an adaptation of the novel.
The original Star Wars movies are vastly overrated by people in general. The IMDb list places Chapters 5 and 4 as the 15th and 30th best movies ever made, respectively - which, like the list itself, is a joke. Even Jedi is rated 95th, still well ahead of Lawrence of Arabia at 100 and A Clockwork Orange at 112.

@@Malt454 And you're one of these "Anything that's popular is overrated" people who need to find ways to superficially set themselves apart, pretending their opinions are original and outside the box. Lol. But yeah whatever, .. Keep reading your lists, because I don't care about lists. The original trilogy is still not overrated I don't care about IMDB. Dune was terrible and it wasn't just because it was a bad adaptation. Villeneuve is a fraud who makes sterile boring movies.

Still not a good movie, and never will be thanks to its well documented flaws, but at least it was true to the creator's vision and felt like a lived in universe, unlike the modern tick-box approach, directed by committee, survive a lightsaber impalement bullcrap.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.
