The backyard live version gives you a much better "experience" of this song IMO. And by the way, this was a Confederate Army marching song that morphed into a southern prison chain gang song, then Lead Belly changed it up just a bit in 1939 to the "modern" version we have now.

Fun facts...this song has multiple entendres...
The song written by blues guitarist Lead Belly in 1934 was a take on an old work/chain gang song...
    Black Betty refers to
    1. the bull whip used on slaves
    2. Black Betty was the nick name of an American rifle used to counter the Brit's Brown Bess rifle in the revolutionary war..hence, the BAM BA LAM!..
    3. Also refers to a woman
    4. Also refers to a bottle of whiskey
    😬

First recorded in 1933 by James "Iron Head" Baker at a prison farm in Sugarland Texas. BUT, it's origins trace all of the way back to . . . . . ENGLAND, in the early 1700's, as a drinkin' song in old English pubs. I believe that the lyrics were changed by Redcoat soldiers during the American revolution. The Redcoats left . . . . . the song stayed.

Blackbetty is a very old African-American work song of unknown origins... First made "famous" when recorded in 1939 by Blues legend Leadbelly... However it wasn't a hit in America, but later became a huge influence in England and is one of the main reasons people say the Blues had to go to England to finally be recognized and appreciated by America...
