Hey Guys! How many of you guessed the right answer from the community post on Wednesday?!?! It seems to me a lot of you had an inkling....Let me know in the comments below! And this is another in the STYLE BREAKDOWN SERIES, so let me know below which styles YOU want to see next!!!
I would love to see a video with ideas on how to decorate a bedroom with the IKEA beds BJÖRKSNÄS and KVALFJORD! I don’t care that much for the matching nightstands. We would like to have a beautiful and restful new bedroom. Thank you so much, Lisa 😊 !
Could you go over the classics? Regency, Art Deco, difference of Neoclassical styles. There’s so much to go through, I’m looking forward to learning how to adapt them to modern life. 😊
Farmhouse style has their own unique style. I think each person will adore this style cause it has 8 different styles. If you want to take these style for your house, here is 10 wonderful ways to help you: And also, save your time a lots :) ua-cam.com/video/dgz9QCy7OcM/v-deo.html Nice to hear that it's useful for you ;)
I think it might be because I grew up in New England but I’ve always been had a soft spot for the farmhouse and cottage core aesthetic. To me the whole “modern and clean lines” look just seems so cold and harsh.
Ohhhh love a good old "thingie" find! Bothers me with all the cheesy reproductions when old stuff is really affordable right now and just needs some TLC repair or a slight update. I personally love true Shabby Chic Eclectic mixed with Arts and Crafts Movement stuff (when I can find it and afford it).
You are so right! I always encourage people to find their own personal style and design based off of that because then it never goes off "trend" because it's what you LOVE! Thanks for watching!
The problem was that the market was glutted with cheaply made, ugly, disproportionate, pseudo-Tuscan monstrosities. Real Tuscan is beautiful, from colored plaster-work to beautiful hand-made tiles to copper pots & fixtures. Cheap & fake Tuscan makes your head hurt it's so ugly, trite, and out of scale.
I wish people wouldn't do farmhouse on a house that doesn't match from the outside. Not everything needs a barn door for crying out loud hahahaha not my vibe. Its like home goods threw up in there
Haha you are too funny! Yes, everyone does have their own personal taste. I always encourage people to figure out what that is and then it never goes out of style!
I live in FL and was looking to possibly move homes and looked at one with my realtor and after we were outside I said it’s like it barfed beach decor. What was worse is the architecture of the home was modern traditional. To me one of the biggest mistakes in design is when people “buy all the things” of a particular style. Accent people!
I actually love this style. Without the barn doors and big word signs I’ve always loved farmhouse and always will. Any style can be taken too literally and made tacky
I love barn doors and big word signs snd distressed wood and not roosters and cows..the thing about farmhouse is you can take and leave what you want and if u don't like it at all or tired of it , it's easy to update as far me I don't forsee growing tired of the cozy anytime soon
Lisa, I think unless you actually live on a farm, you shouldn't "force" your suburban or city homes to be in the farmhouse style ... and boy am I ever sick of seeing "farm fresh" on everything. I think an eclectic mixing of styles is much more realistic to live in. All that being said, I loved your video. They are always informative and entertaining. 😊
I'd love to see a video on how to create a modern bohemian style. Or... bohemian Scandinavian. Basically, I want to nail the bohemian style without it being tacky.
Ooo I second this idea, I feel the same way! I want to do a boho style without my apartment screaming “I pretend to do yoga just so I can post pictures of it on Instagram” or, “I buy ripped up tie dye tee shirts at urban outfitters for $60 all the time and see nothing wrong with it.” 😂 but on a real note I would like to do a boho look while also looking classy at the same time!
Yes! I love the boho look and I have loved (& used) it before it was “chic” or the in thing...and now going outta “style”. I’d love ideas on updating and achieving a more sleek & modern look.
I lived on a ranch. Leather couch, real bear rug, large mud room & a cast-iron stove in the kitchen to heat the kitchen while bacon was cooked on the electric stove
We have an art pice that’s large, neutral colors and was painted by my husband’s grandma that’s our single art focus and it’s nice to have something meaningful instead of buying something generic
Howdy, Lisa, from the farm! Fort Worth, Texas, actually. My style isn’t farmhouse although I like this neue 2.0 version much better and hopefully no more wood or metal pieces with cheesy quotes, etc. These last few years, I’ve become a big mid-century modern/Scandinavian-ish fan. Recently retired, this last year I’ve been preparing for a huge downsizing sale and had it not been for Covid, I would have had it end of March, had to cancel two weeks before it and now my house looks like I’m ready to move. Maybe late spring, I’ll feel safe enough to let strangers into my home. I want to get rid of dark pieces and create more negative space! Can’t wait. Will put your advice to use next year. Your videos and ideas NEVER lack or disappoint, you always make me laugh along the way, and although it’s not my style, I really loved hearing the farm animals. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
Hey Deb! You Texans are just the best… So generous of spirit! Yes, the MCM movement has really become somethings strong… That’s what I like about this FH 2.0, you can mix in some of that with it without a problem. Living in Texas you probably see enough farmhouse and could easily be over it...🤣🤣❤️
Thank you for all of your kind words in the livestream! It was so fun to chat about all different kinds of design! I'm so glad that distressed/"antiqued" furniture is going the way of the dodo. There's so much of it out there (and fake distressed wood that's actually veneer, barf). There are a few styles I would love to see more about. As we discussed, that sort of beachy West Coast style that's common in BC (but also in the Pacific Northwest and even the Rocky Mountains) is fascinating to me. It isn't my style, but a lot of people here go that route so they can blend into the landscape. On the California coast there's also a different kind of beachy surfer style that would be neat to explore. My own personal style relies heavily on geometric patterns, minimalist accents that nod to industrial style (but not enough to be steampunk). I use lots of black with bright colours, metallics, glass, and high-gloss finishes (I'm not into neutrals or lots of texture). I'm not sure if there's a name for my style, but that's me. 😁 Thanks for a lovely video and chat! It was nice to be here during the stream!
Hey Jon! Yes, it was great to have you on the live stream… Those always seem to fly by so fast! Yes, the California coastal look is definitely on my agenda, it’s a bit ubiquitous, but still a good look. If I were to locate you on the style spectrum, you sound a bit of a combo of urban and glam… You know, glam but with some very cool street savvy to it👍🏻😉🥰 very groovy and unique!
At least it looks like shiplap is gone--all I can think of when I see shiplap is, "Look at all those tiny little wall-lengths shelves for dust to gather."
I'm so happy I found your channel! I'm a 62 year old in a 120 year old farmhouse on 50 acres in central Texas and still deciding which way to go with the design of remodeling and decor. I'm a graphic designer and fine artist, but have no real "decorator" knowledge. I just know what I like. Lots of hand me down pieces. You've been a big help with the refreshed attitude!
Hey chiller and welcome to the channel! What a fabulous place, to have a real century old farmhouse! That’s one you’re going to have real fun redoing… If you want to be sure and share the before and after‘s with us at hello@lisaholt.com!🙌🏻🥰🥰❤️
Love your sense of humor with the barnyard sounds and American Gothic. This style isn't my specific decor but I certainly spent years watching Chip and Joanna Gaines on Fixer Upper. Funny how style concepts evolve. I remember when '80's farmhouse style was all Ralph Lauren.
Best interior design video I’ve seen in a long time. So refreshing. There’s actual useful information in it, tons of it, but not overkill. It’s not boring as all get out or dragging on FOREVER to get to the point. These videos I like!!!
Raychel!!! I LOVE hearing that these videos aren't boring or too long, I want to make design a FUN adventure for you guys to experience with me!!! 😝💗 Thank you so so much for this sweet comment, and thank you for subscribing!!! 🥰💖💖
We lived on a farm in central New York. I found it funny that the wash tub that people hang for decor was a real working wash tub on the side of the barn. I get that people want the feeling of a simpler life in their homes, but it got over the top. Your clean farmhouse is refreshing. But the real farmers will stick with authenticity.
I love farmhouse as long as it isn’t “cluttered” with all the brick-a-brack, but also not so modern or minimalist as to feel cold while looking sleek. As always, thanks for showing examples and providing a resource list.
It’s been dead since everything in hobby lobby had words all over it. ...it’s been dead since Chip and Jo graduated high school. Y’all, just do what you love.
Thank you for this awesome video! Living in Texas, in a former horse stable turned subdivision, and keeping with the general architecture of the new homes, farmhouse decor fits right in. I’m glad it’s not completely dead, just more refined. Thank you for outlining how to make it work in a more updated, refreshed and sophisticated way. Like you said, removing all the unnecessary farmhouse clutter is key.
I think the appeal of the farmhouse look is that it was accessible to everyone. Women felt like it was easy to incorporate and give their homes a cozy feel. I really like the 1920s and felt like it used some of those elements. Since I'm so fickle, I'm going to stick with the basics, like subway tile. 🙂
I finally learned what farm house is! My parents home had all those elements-brick walls, refreshed antiques....so I have gone with cozy cottage, but I love it!
We have been looking for a new home for three years. The new cookie cutter Farmhouse style is the most ridiculous, cheap, lack of character and charm, ever. It's predictable...kitchen/living room combo...gray with black or white backsplash and fireplace tile. Never done nicely with classy, charming tile...always blah blah blah. We are building. Can't take what is being passed off as Farmhouse...in neighborhoods of 300 homes with three floor plans, including shiplap somewhere. People have an unbelievable lack of ability to consider design elements. Builders meet the people's wants.
So true, and if you live on a farm with animals, you may have young animals or animal products being brought into your house. Therefore, you wouldn't want everything to be white, because everything will get dirty, and be difficult to clean.
It’s just a name for an aesthetic. I don’t think people are going to jump on an actual working farmhouse look or that they actually think that’s what one looks like. Because most of the stuff is freaking expensive and far outside the price range of what an actual small scale farmer could afford. The farmers I know live in average houses or modular homes because small farms don’t usually provide much income. So it’s merely a name that implies pulling from the look of a farmyard or barn aesthetics more than an actual farm house.
Thank you for a fun and inspiring video. We are redoing an early 1900 small German/Texas farmhouse from the studs and I lean towards a minimal, light palette and still figuring it all out as we go. I like just teeny a hint of retro for fun (vintage soft blue/green gas range) but mostly am drawn to clean lines, a bit of Scandi, and no signs with words telling me where I am, what to do, or how to feel. Your videos on small spaces, lighting and paint colors have been super helpful. Thank you! I love your enthusiasm; you are a born teacher and talented coach.
Oooh Mary I love the sound of this look!! 💙🤩🤩 I'm right there with you - no words for me!!! 😆🧡 SO glad my videos could help you out...thank you so much for watching!! 💕😘
YES! Got here in the '70's! Eclectic, with a few bright throw cushions and an interesting rug...just add lots of plants and avoid heavy drapes unless they're velvet. Velvet anything is good.
I added a few industrial pieces (simple black metal frame shelves) to my vintage victorian furniture and put huge tropical plants as deco everywhere - somehow it doesn‘t look odd to me. Getting a colonial style kinda vibe from it 🤩
I grew up on a farm with original farmhouse style! lol I had this style before for the longest time, then came Joanna Gaines and I felt that all my farmhouse stuff became so trite. Needless to say I put all my goods out on the patio or in storage. With your ideas, I can repurpose some of the furniture and things to make my rooms look refreshed. I love your channel!! I am sorry to say that I only just discovered it about a month ago, so now I am binging on all your videos. Thank you for all your expertise and enthusiasm!
Although this is not my style, I appreciate your insights and analysis of this updated version. If I had a house in the country, I might be tempted to try it!
There were eleven members of my family (all from same parents) and for many years we used a picnic table indoors. Haven't seen THAT in design photos, lol!
Hey Lisa, new subscriber here, and you are a treasure, so glad to have come across your channel. I honestly feel like I'm personally being given rock-solid home design advice from someone I would never be able to afford in the real world lol...so thank you x 100!
Hi Jennie! Thanks so much for joining the channel and subscribing! I’ve been doing this longer than I can remember, or at least should admit to 🤣🤣so I will usually give you the straight skinny. Stay tuned, there’s lots more fun stuff coming🙌🏻😘
Nanami!!! Me too!!! 🤩 I would be a historian in another life! 😂💕 I'm so glad you're enjoying these tasty morsels of design history - thank you so much for watching!! 🥰💙
We live on ranch/forest land which we are making into a hobby farm. I like decorating in congruence with my current environment and architecture. When I lived near the ocean, I did beach style. When I lived in a downtown glass and steel high rise, I did modern. I dislike bric a brack discount store clutter and literal whimsy. For this farmhouse, I am gravitating toward minimalist modern farmhouse with wood and light colored slip covered pieces. I am preferring easy to clean, open space that feels real, natural and relaxed, with a nod to my surroundings in a few - very few - decor pieces.
Hey there MARY… It sounds like you absolutely have it covered! I am always all about being true to the architecture which you obviously are as well. So glad you’re a subscriber it’s going to be fun!😍🥰
I'm certainly disappointed that farmhouse is here to stay. It has flooded the market with red pickup trucks, buffalo checked everything, and over-used galvanized metal. I'm glad that its evolving, but let's hope it evolves faster than humans.
I dont like the complete white but more of a cottage style.but I would not put down what others seem to enjoy. I cant stand modern but i do not discount others who like it.we all need to put our own spin on things
Love your videos so helpful. I've completed gutted my house and I'm struggling to find my style. When I do the style quizzes out there it tells me I'm traditional when I was really looking at more of a modern farmhouse which you have explained very well, and is a traditional style. All I can say is THANK YOU!!!
EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS! Thank you so much for articulating how we have moved past all the kitsch and cutesy-ness of Farmhouse 1.0. This will be my anchoring video when we renovate and furnish our retirement home in 2021/2022!
Oooh Jenn so excited for you guys!! 🤩 Isn't having a brand new space to decorate just the best?? 🥰 SO glad I could help in your process, and happy new years!! 🥂🥳
I like some the modern indusrial farmhouse stuff. I find myself liking so many different esthetics I struggle to make things cohesive. I'd love to submit a video idea 🙂 how to mix and match furniture, fabrics and woods.
OMG Marie this is so sweet!! 💕💕 I'm SO glad to have you as part of my UA-cam fam - you guys are the best!! 😘 Isn't it interesting to see how this style has changed with the times?? 👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you SO much for watching, and thanks for this super sweet comment!! 🥰💚
Really intrigued to imagine what those early settlers/18th century farmers would've thought of modern farm house styles. I can imagine some mixed thoughts but it's interesting to think about.
LOL Ben what a fun idea!! 😁 I imagine they'd be pretty confused!! 🤣🤣 I think they'd be pretty excited about the warm water though!! 😂 Have a wonderful holiday season! 💕🎄
"Carpe diem" was really thoughtful when we heard it in the film Dead poet's society 30 years ago. But after that it became too much, with signs and words everywhere for decades. And I can't stand when things are new but made distressed and fake old. But old things and furniture can be so beautiful, and in great quality, well worth renovating if you love them. What you show in this video of the Farmhouse 2.0 we see a lot of in Sweden.
I’d love to see a video on eclectic, farmhouse style looks good on farms or in country BnBs but for me I prefer eclectic with a mix of old and new. Also over sooo over Scandi it’s too saturated.
George!!! SO glad you are getting a TON of yummy design knowledge through these videos!!! Always here to help you guys solve your design dilemmas!!! 😉 Thank you so much for watching and WELCOME to our fun community!!! 🥳🎉💙
Thank you, Lisa! I like Farmhouse but I don't like overly thematic decor. I've been trying to figure out how to mix styles and feeling a bit lost. We did do all 4 walls of our living room Shiplap and I LOVE it! It's so warm and light and fresh but we are putting in Pottery Barn vintage caramel leather sofas! I can't wait. Find all of your videos extremely helpful.
Hey Anne! I'm so glad I'm able to help! 🥰 Why don't you sign up and say hello at www.lisaholtdesign.com, and I’ll add you to my Design Club list we’re launching soon, where we’ll livestream Q&A’s, deep dive and give lots of pro tips all about design! 🥳
I was getting tired of the whole shabby chic X farmhouse decor (too much frou frou, distressing and wood everything lol). _Finally_ something more contemporary that I can get behind. Ironically I decorated my bedroom in Neue Farmhouse 2.0 style without realising it because I didn't want the extreme of the Farmhouse trend. Threw in modern pieces with traditional stuff and it sorta works
This was SO helpful!!! I'm on the struggle bus to finding my style. This felt more like home for me/us! We like modern, somewhat minimalist but also enjoy vintage/down home feelings of comfort. YAY, thank you so much!!!! I've been bingeing your videos all day...hehe
I absolutely LOVE to hear this Jenn!!! 😁🙌🏻 Finding your personal style can b SUCH a challenge - but it's totally worth it when you can decorate a space in a way you LOVE!!! 🤩 So glad I could help, and thank you for being such a wonderful part of my channel!! 💖 Happy happy holidays!! 🎄❄️
The US is gravitating towards Scandinavian, but we're gravitating away from it.x) Well, not really, but there's more people these days who love colors. I used to live 30 years surrounded by white walls and plain wood (mostly birch) everywhere, now I'm just so over it and have been already for quite a while. Heading for even more bohemian / vintage.:)
Well as you know, design in all fields is cyclical and they eb & flow. I believe it’s because we see something new.. we surround ourselves with that... and then we get tired and look for what’s next. So as the pendulum swings for you away from Scandi the opposite end of that spectrum would be a version of Bohemian. So all that makes sense 😀 thanks for watching!🙂
As always, love your videos! This video is very interesting and informative... I love all the pictures you show.. and thanks for the tips on how to do country farm house style with a modern touch.. was it 2.0 🤔. Your channel is the best! 😊
I have to say that I don’t like new look of the farmhouse. In farmhouse style I like this rustic, charming, cozy look with some vintage elements. New look is for me combination of farmhouse and modern house, which can be interesting for many but not for me. But still I like Lisa’s videos and I’m not going to give up watching her.😂
Lisa Holt Design thank you Lisa. I know that. Your videos are very informative and resourceful. You are full of energy. It’s pleasure to watch all of them! Thank you again! 👍😘
TFS! I’m over farmhouse & gray!! 5000 shades of gray & people get disappointed because it’s very deceiving in the store because of lighting! Great segment!👍👍👍👍👍✌️❤️🇺🇸
@Canadian Girl, That's your choice - 2020 may be a crappy year, but we still have choice - tho I'm totally farmhoused out! Have a happy healthy rest of 2020!
Oh my Goodness this video was an answer to prayers! I moved to a ranch from the suburbs just last week! The house needs a ton of updating and I want to make it farmhouse looking but I’ve always loved/been the minimalist Scandinavian look. This video helped me figure out how to tie all three together! I’m super excited for my Neue farmhouse 2.0!!!!
Yay!! So glad I'm able to help, Emily! 🥰 We’d always love to see the before/after shots at hello@lisaholt.com! Thanks so much for joining us!! Stay tuned for more!
I live in the country and grew up in metropolises all over the world. I love the Farmhouse look and the Farmhouse items in stores; however, I also love sleek modern design. Anything that is beautiful, clean, and organized is appreciated in my books and so much better than what many people have. Anyone that strives to make an effort for beauty and order is appreciated and yes, truly blessed. I don't see the point in being so judgemental about particular styles. Farmhouse is wholesome and clean, and I value these two attributes and people that create them.
I think any style can last, as long as it isn't tacky, or kitschy. There has to be an inclusion of core timeless (fill in the blank style, or mix) nod pieces, mixed with classic pieces to create the look you want. But it should be comfortable, practical, simpler, and quality, with meaningful pieces.
Lisa, can you please do a video of spaces that you have designed (before and afters) or ideas for how to update/modernize your home. It would be great to see some real life/personal examples 😊
Hey Amanda! Yes, I can do some before and afters, but check out the B&A page on my regular website, www.lisaholt.com, there's a HUGE section! Thanks so much for subscribing! :):)
''Painted signage everywhere!'' :D Yes, I see this style overdone more often than not. (The same goes for shabby chic.) Keeping this style pared down is the key to success, I think. . I'm not a fan of the modern aspect of 'Farmhouse 2.0', but agree that the visual clutter and signage has to go. . My own favorite 'farmhouse' style, is a true 'Swedish Country Style', with Gustavian elements and palette.
Yes, I agree many of the modernism style elements don’t work - if you look at the pictures she shows of where Farmhouse originated, with the early farmhouses, the whole reason it works is those old tables and chairs for instance, have texture, are completely natural, and thus nurturing or in other words literally heart-warming to be in. Those modernism elements are completely often opposite, masculine lines, unnatural materials, shiny, lack of authentic natural texture.
Still not a fan of Farmhouse but I understand you have to show every style. ❤️ Would love to see a modern style with lots of color. I love all your videos Lisa, I’m sure you’ve shown some examples already in one of them. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What an amazing way to do your workouts! I can’t do that because I’m way too critical and I would get too distracted and I never get any workout done😂 but, I’m glad I am a motivating factor for your health as well as your design Sensibilities!🙂
I like the minimalist look, so any style of minimalism is where I’m going to research. Question, would a large black and whites family photo be appropriate for a living room or family room? Since I’m not art savvy (but I’m Checking out your art video after this), so I really need help! LOL. Thanks Lisa and please keep your videos coming, they are really helping. God bless you.
Hey DD! So glad you’re part of the channel… Yes, be sure to check out the art video, but my recommendation for family portraits is usually to hang them in semi private and or private spaces, such as dens, hallways leading to bedrooms, or bedrooms themselves.👍🏻🥰❤️
I definitely like farmhouse when it is pared back. I don’t mind Studio McGee. I just need more colour than the palette of farmhouse. Plus I like to mix modern and traditional styles. It feels less contrived than when you stick to a theme. Probably one of my favourite styles is Southern American. I love Southern architecture and the formality.
Because we live in an actual farmhouse, I was really excited to see this. Thank you so much. An additional point I would like to point out: Food and produce processing equipment is beautiful. Make the largest piece of processing equipment the Central Design Element of the kitchen. A huge juice press is mine. Leaving it set up for use is both beautiful and means I don't have to drag that heavy thing around to set up to press fruit.
OMG Melody that is SO cool - I love this approach!! 👏🏻👏🏻 What a perfect combination of making your space convenient to live in and having absolutely delicious design!!! 🥰💜 Thank you SO much for sharing this great tip - I love how many FABULOUS ideas you guys share in these comments!! 💙🤩
Here's the key for me. I use traditional furniture and use a sprinkle of whatever is trending at the time. This way, when a particular fad is over, I just buy a new picture or knickknack and voila, gives the room an updated look without breaking the bank. The problem with farmhouse decor is most people over did it and made everything in their homes into a big farmhouse nightmare.
Cynthia!! 😁 I love how flexible and intuitive you are with your personal style - great strategy!! 👏🏻❤️ Your space sounds absolutely wonderful - thank you for sharing! Hope you're having a fabulous week so far! 💕🌟
I've seen this in so many UA-cam 'farmhouse' videos. Same colors, fixtures, furniture, accent walls and those horrid signs in the bathrooms! I swear the gray paint used in the last five years would fill the Pacific ocean. Regardless of what Lisa says I think Farmhouse is on life support.
This is a nice video, the new look of the farmhouses have changed. This is anew look for farmhouse. But we still like the comfort look at home when we walk into a room I am home.
I love, love, love Lisa Holt Design. I never "took" to the farmhouse style. I'm disappointed to see this *new* Farmhouse style. To me, it doesn't really seem like farmhouse, especially with the ultra modern elements. Can we call it something else? ;) Please? ;)
Omg @Lisa Holt Design , I’m so sad I missed this live and the weekly chat!!! Ugh! This latest installment of the style breakdown series is phenomenal though!! I love that you give us the history of the style and the future of where it’s going!! We all know this was a big one for the last few years with anyone that’s watched fixer upper on hgtv. I’m so glad the style is moving away from all the brica brack which is feeling sooo cliché now! How refined is that “Neue Farmhouse”!!? It seems much more ultra modern and minimalist with just a few subtle touches of farmhouse. Much more chic!! Love this and you! 😘😘😘😍😍😍😍
Omg 😳 so sorry you missed us today! We launched a bit earlier and noticed you were a missin!!! Anyway, we are connecting here and now! Yes, Farmhouse is finally growing up!!! Yay! Glad you liked the video 🙂😘😘😘 it’s always so nerve wrecking posting a new one 😳... see ya next week!!
Lisa Holt Design Hahaha, farmhouse is a big girl now 😂.. yes, I am sad I missed it and thanks for noticing! 🥰 You still made my day! I’ll surely be there to support next week!
Greetings from Alabama! I just found your Channel today and I've already watched several videos. I absolutely love how much information and knowledge you're sharing with us. I've been sort of in this Farmhouse mode for the past 3 years or so but like you're stating, I'm really making sure that there's not a lot of signage everywhere and everything looks more streamline but cozy and newer Farmhouse looking pieces. We live in a little cottage but it's in a more upscale newer neighborhood. It's just a small 4-bedroom 2-bath house, four-sided brick in very soft tone brick colors. The interior is painted in tones of grays and white. I love my home and it's taken some time to get it where it's becoming more cohesive and I've been able to add more interesting pieces over time. What I'm really hoping to do is update my art work. I want to reconfigure our hallway which on one wall is what I like to call our 'art/ picture wall'. I have started to frame some of my children's paintings and even transfer them to Canvas boards and frame those. Would you do a video on how to create an art wall in your hallway? I would absolutely adore that. I like to mix canvas paintings, art that my children are creating along with black and white photos of our family "in action", I guess you could say. They're not your typical sterile family photos per se but just pictures of my children playing and pictures of my husband and I are at a wedding. They're black and white and they're framed in these gorgeous frames that match and then we have the canvas art/ colorful artwork all around them. I would love to know how to construct this in a way that is pleasing to the eye and not just a hodgepodge of a mess. Any tips of how to hang them in a specific way or how to arrange them properly would be so helpful. Any tips will be greatly appreciated!
OMG this space sounds absolutely magical!! 🤩 I love the contemporary take on farmhouse you're describing!! 🙌🏻 Definitely check out my video on how to choose art for your home if you haven't already -- even though you're not exactly choosing art, I think it might have some good info for you! 👍🏻 And don't be afraid to head over to www.lisaholt.com/design-resources and drop this (or any!) question into my Q&A box!! I'll do my best to get back to you and help you out over there!! 😁 Hope you have a wonderful new year with your family!! 🥳💕
@@LisaHoltDesign Thank you so much, Lisa! It means so much that you got back with me. I'll definitely check out that link as well as your video on choosing art. Happy New Year!!!
Recently when picking out a new dining table & chairs, my husband changed at the last minute. He felt farmhouse would be just another trend. So we went with mixing neoclassical & French deco style. The fun fabric on the chairs gave it fun lift so it’s not stuffy. 😊 thanks for the videos, my mom-in-law is loving them too! 🥰
Oh! Thanks so much for sharing my channel with your mom in law! And I have to say that a left turn towards neoclassical and French deco would never be a problem for me either!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥰😂
I like authentic farmhouse style and real farmhouse furniture, just not all the stuff from Hobby Lobby, Wayfair, Michael’s and Joann’s to decorate with.
Hey Guys! How many of you guessed the right answer from the community post on Wednesday?!?! It seems to me a lot of you had an inkling....Let me know in the comments below! And this is another in the STYLE BREAKDOWN SERIES, so let me know below which styles YOU want to see next!!!

No, I didn't get it right.... I thought something gothic LOL
I was way off! I thought you were going to talk about art or Gothic style. I love all things cottage style, especially in the kitchen area! =D
Fingers crossed! Enough of "live, love, laugh" & "blessed"! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Amen! hate those distressed quotes.
@@Lori-er4zv 😆👍🏼
just bought a house and first thing I did was take all those stickers off the walls XD
Also, barn doors🙄
I agree.....do I really need a sign that reminds me to "live, love, laugh"? I do not. Enough already.
I still love farmhouse. Just in a more refined and subtle way. It’s warm and restful.

Farmhouse style has their own unique style. I think each person will adore this style cause it has 8 different styles. I live in Folk Victorian from 1898 in New England. Farmhouse style is never dead. Collected crusty items are my jam.
Thanks so much for watching!! 🥰 Stay tuned for more!
“Collected crusty” 😂👍🏼
Same. Our home is from 1900. We buy from antique stores.
I can’t keep up with what’s in. I do what I like
Kimberly Davis - Agree!
Great !! AND THAT WAY IT s SURE TO BE IN !!!
THIS
Me too!
Yes!!
Following a trend too much is always a bad idea. It reminds me of the “Tuscan” style of the early 2000’s. It becomes tacky really quick.
You are so right! I always encourage people to find their own personal style and design based off of that because then it never goes off "trend" because it's what you LOVE! Thanks for watching!
Lisa Holt Design so true!
Hahaha. Good one!
Susan Baker I
The problem was that the market was glutted with cheaply made, ugly, disproportionate, pseudo-Tuscan monstrosities.
@@LisaHoltDesign you're not wrong! I feel like farmhouse got big and everyone really leaned on into it a little too hard !
Yes, if a design doesn't match or fit the space it looks weird or cheap.
Haha...Homegoods and TJ Maxx and Hobby Lobby literally ran through the barn doors and regurgitated white with black writing all over!
I actually love this style. Without the barn doors and big word signs I’ve always loved farmhouse and always will. Any style can be taken too literally and made tacky
CatsR Cute I agree. I love this style but lean a little more toward a French country farmhouse style.
I so agree with you.
I think some of us forget at the end of the days it’s only what you like. I think farmhouse is forever but my house is a mixture.
@@tinawalker5335 sounds pretty
Agree. You can have a farmhouse table and chairs, but skip the butter churn.
Thank you so much for sharing your opinion and thanks for being a part of my channel!🥰
I'd love to see a video on how to create a modern bohemian style. Or... bohemian Scandinavian. Basically, I want to nail the bohemian style without it being tacky.
That's a great request Brittney! I'll add it to the list of videos to come! 😍😍 Thanks for watching!
Yess!
Plants, earthen ware, bamboo/rattan, hand woven something and warm, earth tones?
That sounds wonderful! 😍 Thanks so much for joining the channel! There's LOTS more coming!
Thanks for a lovely video and chat!
Lisa Holt Design I will remember that, thank you! 😀 Hope I can join another one of your livestreams; that was fun!
SHOUT OUT to your husband for doing a GREAT job with the edits, sound effects and reference pics.

I’m so over the farmhouse look... and everything gray - walls, floors, etc. Both have been way overdone.
Oh haven't they?!!
@@monkeybearmax I thought brown's had already been done a year or 2 back!
I love the farmhouse look but despise gray. It’s depressing.
@@user-lr5cx1ni4r yes, it's like prison!
Hmmm, I’d stay with the grays and blues any day than the poopy shades.. :)
At least it looks like shiplap is gone--all I can think of when I see shiplap is, "Look at all those tiny little wall-lengths shelves for dust to gather."
Exactly! I think the same thing about the dust.
I think 'wow, that takes me back to school and what the outsides of our dorms looked like.'
And I'm in my 50s now! 🤣
I thought I was the only one! Choosing materials and pieces for my home was an exercise on "what will gather the least amount of dust?".

Hey Rosanna! Thank you for your comment and thank you for joining the channel! 🥳🥳
I love farmhouse as long as it isn’t “cluttered” with all the brick-a-brack, but also not so modern or minimalist as to feel cold while looking sleek. As always, thanks for showing examples and providing a resource list.
Yay! So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for being a part of my channel! Stay tuned for more fun videos!🥰
It’s been dead since everything in hobby lobby had words all over it. ...it’s been dead since Chip and Jo graduated high school. Y’all, just do what you love.

I love the minimal farmhouse look with a pop of contemporary. Very clean and fresh. Great ideas!
I SO agreee!! 🥰😍💕 Thank you for sharing your thoughts!!
Nope not moving on from antique..love me the old stuff and the old style way better but that's me
Thank you for this awesome video!
Absolutely loved the historical photos!!! Thank you for having them. I always love your episodes, but this made it one of my favorites.
Yay! Yes, I love anything that resembles Ken Burns Docs! 🙂 thanks for your kind words and your comment 😀🙂
I would love to see you do a designer reacts series! You could react to celebrity homes showcased on AD.
Thanks so much for sharing Lindsey! And thanks for watching!
I finally learned what farm house is! My parents home had all those elements-brick walls, refreshed antiques....so I have gone with cozy cottage, but I love it!
People that live on farms mock "farmhouse style" as ridiculous.
Do you blame them? 🤣
@@amethyst1826 😂😂😂😂🤣

Houseplants give me the creeps. They make me think about bugs.
YES! Got here in the '70's! Eclectic, with a few bright throw cushions and an interesting rug...just add lots of plants and avoid heavy drapes unless they're velvet. Velvet anything is good.
Scandi pharmahouse 3.2
I added a few industrial pieces (simple black metal frame shelves) to my vintage victorian furniture and put huge tropical plants as deco everywhere - somehow it doesn‘t look odd to me. Getting a colonial style kinda vibe from it 🤩

Let’s hope it just evolves right out of here!
I just don’t get the galvanized look! Not for me.
NO worries, guys! Old FH is really outta here! It's fresh and sassy now, so bag the trucks and galvanized everything! :)

I agree with you Lauren 😊 I liked the way you put it! Thanks so much for sharing your view and thanks for watching 😍
Agree 😘🙂
Lisa, can you please do a video of spaces that you have designed (before and afters) or ideas for how to update/modernize your home. It would be great to see some real life/personal examples 😊

''Painted signage everywhere!'' :D
Yes, I see this style overdone more often than not.
(The same goes for shabby chic.)
Keeping this style pared down is the key to success, I think.
.
I'm not a fan of the modern aspect of 'Farmhouse 2.0',
but agree that the visual clutter and signage has to go.
.
My own favorite 'farmhouse' style, is a true 'Swedish Country Style',
with Gustavian elements and palette.
Thanks for the video and all the info, very helpful for me, love it!!
Your so welcome!!!! 🙂
Still not a fan of Farmhouse but I understand you have to show every style. ❤️ Would love to see a modern style with lots of color. I love all your videos Lisa, I’m sure you’ve shown some examples already in one of them. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Modern is cold. Hate it
Thanks so much for watching Denise! Stay tuned for more fun (and colourful 😆) videos!
I pledge I will always stay to the bitter end Lisa, and I got my sit ups done while watching you plus way more than I really wanted to do. 🤗
I've always been modern minimal farmhouse. lol. Glad I can reduce it to farmhouse 2.0. thanks!!
Oh yes, me too! That’s coming up soon on a style video as well👍🏻
Because we live in an actual farmhouse, I was really excited to see this.
Absolutely... Farmhouse has definitely changed! You're right! But you can mix styles to make it unique to you... that can be the best part! 🤗🤗
I love, love, love Lisa Holt Design. I never "took" to the farmhouse style. I'm disappointed to see this *new* Farmhouse style. To me, it doesn't really seem like farmhouse, especially with the ultra modern elements. Can we call it something else? ;) Please? ;)
I like it though - it’s basically Studio MgGee instead of Johanna Gaines. It will be some other version in a few years.
Well, you could definitely call it softened Modern… The natural words bring a warm to modern that can often be missing. How’s that sound😘😘🙌🏻
@@LisaHoltDesign LOVE IT! Thanks, Lisa! 😊💕🙌
I like a blend of Farmhouse and urban industrial.
That’s what I am trying to pull of in my home. Hopefully it turns out as planned
And I have to say that a left turn towards neoclassical and French deco would never be a problem for me either!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥰😂
great and helpful video. I love the modern farmhouse style! you make it soo easy to understand it and this is a great guide on how we can adapt it!
Lovely comment and I so appreciate it! 🙂🙂🙂
Looks like from the comments I’m in the minority here but I love adding farmhouse pieces to a modern minimalist look!
I agree with you. Just not over doing is the key 😃
Right. All in moderation.
I like authentic farmhouse style and real farmhouse furniture, just not all the stuff from Hobby Lobby, Wayfair, Michael’s and Joann’s to decorate with.
@@greeneyedgirlina oh I agree. So much is Hobby Lobby now. That is not real farmhouse.
Minority is good. At least you won't be accused of just following the trends! 🙂🙂
I’m learning a whole new vocabulary! I feel cultured in design, wow lookie, thanks Lisa for the education & the inspiration!
I really appreciate your comment! I'm so glad you're joining us!! 😍 Stay tuned for more fun videos!
Love the farm animal sounds in the background, such attention to detail!!!
Detail is everything.
😃🤗
Yay! Thanks for noticing!😄
