Very valuable insight! Luckily, I hired a content writer for my recruiting firm website and a web designer who previously owned an executive search firm. My business development partner is SEO specialist so I hope our "storefront" will be attractive enough to generate business. One of my biggest take away was your advice to hire a web designer who will give the customer real time progress on the project. I missed that vetting element. With that said I would love to receive your feedback once the end product is delivered. Thank you. Lucien

It really registered with me when you said 70% of people decide where they are going to shop based on the company’s website. I started thinking of my research I do online when in the market for something and I generally go with the company with the best website and most recently updated information on their website. If see a banner for their 2020 holiday hours on their home page, I’m out. It tells me they don’t their site seriously and there are probably other things in their business they “let slide”.

As an agency we stopped updating the portfolio site 5 years ago. None of our clients need it because we're never going to copy our site to make their site.

If you go to buy a tailored suit, the sale person will be wearing something up to date. I am not buying their suit off their back, nor am I copying it; I wanna know that the person in front of me is knowledgeable and stands behind their product.

In terms of payments and customers sensitive details, how do you make sure that the web designers do not have access to it if they are building it from abroad

usually they have login access with you can revoke once they hand over the site to you.
      AND,
they usually just place in TEST keys .
YOU do have to trust that person in order to do business with them, or find someone who you trust that can guide you on the process when using the LIVE keys. which you shouldnt share with anyone. and not expose client side(new devs often forget. depending how new.)

I've never done anything like this before. If I build a website, do I have to give the login user name & pass for my web hosting to the guy designing the website? Or can they build that without actually going into the web hosting & web domain?
    Thanks.

They can build it on their own servers then transfer to you. Or if you don't have a website yet, then they can build it on your host's server. However, at some point, your domain has to be pointed to the server, so someone will need your credentials.
