The problem is nowadays employer most likely will hire a graphic designer with coding knowlede..trust me ive been looking for some graphic designer jobs and most of them requires a g.designer to have coding knowledge
I think it's because the industry or some group of people are just pushing way too many people into web development, soon it'll become the new coal miners job, plus things like wix or WordPress are also taking the jobs
in my learning i have consistently hear that the need for PURE graphic designers is far and few and that most would benefit from learning web dev skills as well.
@Trinitrophenylnitramine yes i did some coding in college too..but if youre applying for a job theyll be asking you more coding skills...but in the end i knda like coding....been scratching js for a while
I do web design, I'm not too good with the developing part because my dyslexia really makes it difficult. But my business is growing and I'm going to need a web developer.
Congrats on your growing business, the best thing you can do is find a developer you can work with and trust and do multiple projects with them. Good luck 👍
Currently making decisions for my career. Feels like I got diverted into a different career path for almost 2 years now than the course I took in college. This video just made me realize and remember AGAIN what I have always wanted to do back in college (Which was to be a web developer). Thanks! :)
Hi Jesse, I am a graphics designer. & i know graphics design very well. Though web design looks like graphics design that's why i wanna learn web development. Do you think my decision is right? if wrong then give me a suggestion.
I think you could start by learning front end development and see if it's something that you enjoy. Since HTML and CSS are tied so closely with the layout and design of a website it would be a logical next step. If you learn that you enjoy coding then my suggestion would be to learn javascript and then from there the sky is the limit.
Self Employed - I do it all (and I'm the only programmer in my company). It's a lot work but I'm invaluable to my team. I'm sure, if I had to, I could find a new job pretty easily. It's worth it to know all aspects of your job/passion!
Hey there! I wanna do UI / UX and front end as well! What should I be focusing on to learn in my free time, I’m in college rn, in a coding-related degree program but not purely focusing on the areas I’m interested in
Bro, you’ve got this!! We all start in the very beginning. Keep learning and pushing yourself- one day you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come. Stoked for you and your journey!
Not coding... that's the part where I'm out... wondering if they really truly did anthing! Back in the day it made sense... especially when all you had to code with was a text field... Nowadays it seems crazy for most websites.
Do you think it’s possible I can do web development/design f/t from home? I’m an introvert and don’t hate people, but I don’t like office politics, clicks, favoritism, gossip, having to talk all the time, etc.
I think there is a place for everyone, I have been blessed to work at some amazing companies that really care about me, so don't give up hope on working at a physical location, but yes you can design or develop full time from home too.
Jesse Showalter Thanks, but by your video, I can tell you’re a lot more outgoing and charismatic than I am(not that I’m angry/depressed). After the 15+ places I’ve worked, I find that I feel better being at home. I did transcription from home for a few years & I was very productive & felt free to be me, but the pay was low and the work was inconsistent. Thanks for making such great videos. Great to see that you love your career. I will watch more of them to keep myself motivated!
YumYum Kitty You're in the same situation as me. I work at home but the work is intermittent and I'm not getting ahead. I wouldn't mind working in an office if I could dip and work from home when I need it. I hope things have changed in the past two months since you posted this.
Hi Jesse, I'm Vanessa from Nigeria and I have to say I LOVE THIS Video because I've been so confused on which to begin... You basically just explained away my confusion. I studied architecture in college and in a way, I find myself super interested in both dev and design, somehow I feel my discipline has a very large role to play in that because I've been taught to design with the end game of solving problems, so the end part of your video really resonated with me... I WAS that kid that took the remote apart btw. Thank you so much for this video. ☺☺
+Vanessa Christian you have such a cool story! It just goes to show that no matter what field your in problems always need solving. So glad that the video was a help 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for the information on both and the analogy with the car and the engine. Really love it. Question for you. I'm looking to dabble into web design but can't afford something like Photoshop. Is there some other alternative to Photoshop that might help me when starting out with designing websites? I'm completely new to all of this and I'm currently taking a course in school learning HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. So I kind of want to touch some design to see if it's something that I would like. I feel like I would like to dive into both and would appreciate any feedback from you!! Thanks again!!
Affinity Photo would be a great alternative, I also recommend Sketch but if you just needed 1 program that could do it all and is similar to Photoshop I would choose Affinity.
I'm over 50 and am at the point in my life I can begin to start a career. I've been a mom and babysat my three grand babies for the last 34 years. I went to a meeting where I was taught the very basics of changing some things on our church web site. I realized I could do that all day and LOVE it. I would love to learn whatever I need to in order to become the best I can be. That being said, I have NO college and very little job experience due the ongoing illness of a family member. I saw a response you made, Jesse, to someone about not going to design school. I have done a small amount of research and found a certification course through the community college. I was also told to start watching videos, hence how I got here, to learn. I want to make a profession out of this. My husband isn't in great health and I need something I can be self sustaining with, but still be available to my family. Any feedback would be appreciated.
You know what, it's been two years since I watched this video, and back then I was a web designer and now I am learning JavaScript. And i realized how stupid I am to not start learning web development right away. For the reason that I want to be soooooo gooood in web design.
Thank you for the video Jesse. I really appreciate how you touched upon both professions because I'm both analytical and visually inclined/artistic so I've been trying to figure out whether I should get into web design or web development. Where does UX design fall here? and would you recommend us to start with web development or web design first if we want to do both?
Twelve years ago when I started in this industry, there was only a Web Designer or Developer....and the web designer would do all the frontend code too. The developer would be doing all the PHP/.NET.....building custom CMS's and shopping carts. Vanilla JS wasn't even a thing back then....jQuery was just starting to become the next big thing and that's all you needed to know. Now look at the state of industry!! There's more job titles and frameworks than I've had hot dinners...so just take your pick!!
Hey, thanks for this video. I was wondering if you made sure to learn data structures and algorithms before becoming a web developer? Is it something you recommend for me to learn?
This video is beneficial for those people who are just starting or planning to switch their carriers and a little bit confused about which one is good for them.
ItzGeigger ik I was just asking if he meant javascript cuz he mentioned html css and to complete that he needs js anybody up to be my html css teacher pls I suck at self learning
Lol, I still don't understand, when I design a website, I also add functionality to it, without that how will you see your work, on the page. So is this mean I am learning both web designing and development or just one?? , if one pls let me know which one. I think I am learning both as I am making the view of the website and even adding functionality to it. One more short question, don't we need to do those together, when we are writing code???
Hi from Portugal, Jesse! I really enjoyed your video and subscribed to your channel. I'd like to ask you a question: Do you think it's harder for a person who learned by UA-cam and online courses to get a job in this area than a person who has a degree from college? Is there this kind of prejudice in this area or the only thing that really matters to the employers is if you know how to do even if you don't have a degree?
I am a self-taught designer and developer and in my opinion, people care more about what you can do than what a piece of paper says. Just make sure you can do what you say you can and do it really well.
I have designed my first website, like to learn both for sure! ( BTW. is on my channel... would like to hear some opinions.... ) Being a creative guy my whole life I really like the aspect to design my website the way I want. But I think learning both will give me the Independence I am looking for at the end. Anway great video!
I saw your video of why you shouldn't go to design school and It got me wondering if you actually went to college or had any form of vocational training. I'm a web design student at 2 yr college (less risk and no debt) and I just wanted to ask if you can make a video on your journey of how you got into graphic/ print design and transitioned to web design in your own journey. And how you managed to make a portfolio and land a job in both (assuming you didn't go to college). I am a firm believer of teaching your self things as way of proven motivation however when I search for job listings and internships, many say require bachelors degree of some sort? -Really great content by the way!
Thanks for the encouragement, super happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. I did go to college but only after I had already been working in the industry. That's why I'm of the "don't go to design school" opinion... because it was not a productive use of my time or money. Making a video on my journey is a great idea, I'll put in the queue of videos to make. In a nutshell, I started out making band flyers. then got an internship at my church, then did a mentorship with a friend who is an awesome designer, then got my first full-time job, then freelanced then a design agency, now a startup and freelance. It's a been a while ride. Start making things that excite you, and learn by doing. Stay at it man, nothing good comes without hard work 🤘
Hi, this is the first video I've seen from your channel. I am 18 years old, I am learning CSS and JavaScript, but I feel that I've started learning these things pretty late, so I was curious, when did you know what you wanted to do in the future ? What "school" should I choose to study at university if I want to become both a Web designer and a Web developer?
Love the passion! So inspiring. I’m so interested in Web/Graphic Design and I’m stuck doing something completely unrelated. I wish I had the confidence to pursue it!
@@sullyy2k1 i'm bringing you back to this 3 years later hoping, with all my heart, that you've taken a step towards creating and investing yourself & your time into what you know in your heart you genuinely want to do. i say "a step" specifically because honestly? that's really 99% of what it takes. that's usually the hardest part of creating the life YOU want and trust me, if you can get THAT done, you're so much closer to the life YOU want - much closer than you can ever imagine or believe. with all the love in my heart, i genuinely pray that you find the strength, confidence and courage to take the leap you need. I pray that when life tries to convince you otherwise, that you remember and walk boldly in all the amazing light you carry in you. i pray you find the courage to leave where you're 'stuck' in (if you haven't already ofc) and instead, throw your entire self into things that nourish your mind & awaken your soul. you obviously don't know me lol but believe me when i tell you that i'm sending you SO much love & the biggest, warmest and tightest bear hugs. live! enjoy your life! 🤍
It's better to know how to code cause you don't have to go to a bunch of other people to get something done for the client. It's not like you have to create new algorithms in C, just some basic coding.
I can see myself as a crossover. As one who has been involved with paleontology and looking to transition into tech (no pun intended), I've enjoyed the visual aspects such as cladograms and artistic renditions of what dinosaurs may have looked like which are useful for communicating the science to the public. On the more technical side, I enjoyed anatomy through dissecting animals while heavily reading the textbook and publications on form, function, and evolutionary relationships. I also enjoyed piecing together many bone fragments into one single bone, like a puzzle, during fossil preparation. Right now I got into HTML, JS, and CSS and will eventually figure what's good for me.
Great video! I just gave this video a bump in a college class I'm teaching, a student asked what the difference between web design and web developer was.
As soon as you said “you can do both. You can switch easily because they are so closely related to each either” I was like, I like you. I like that thinking!!! Thanks, it was a great video!

Excellent video brother, you made it simple to understand and interesting to watch. This video genuinely helped me find some guidance and I really appreciate that. Good luck to you man and I hope all is well
The problem is nowadays employer most likely will hire a graphic designer with coding knowlede..trust me ive been looking for some graphic designer jobs and most of them requires a g.designer to have coding knowledge
Exactly, this is a serious issue, and needs to be straightened out in the industry.

Good luck 👍
This is one of my favorite videos yet. Thanks for always dropping awesome content. We'd love to get you back on our podcast sometime! 👍👍
Love to, anytime guys
Currently making decisions for my career. Feels like I got diverted into a different career path for almost 2 years now than the course I took in college. This video just made me realize and remember AGAIN what I have always wanted to do back in college (Which was to be a web developer). Thanks! :)
Congrats! Knowing what you want is 90% of the battle
@@JesseShowalter Thanks Jesse! :)
Great explanation! My daughter is very visual and interested in web design. 😊
Man you just made my day! GOD BLESS YOU!
I’m so stoked! Peace be with you, brother!
Hi,I watch the full video & I found it amazing.

Self Employed - I do it all (and I'm the only programmer in my company). It's a lot work but I'm invaluable to my team. I'm sure, if I had to, I could find a new job pretty easily. It's worth it to know all aspects of your job/passion!
“its worth it to know all aspects of your job/passion” i 100% agree!! Thanks for sharing!
Hey there! I wanna do UI / UX and front end as well! What should I be focusing on to learn in my free time, I’m in college rn, in a coding-related degree program but not purely focusing on the areas I’m interested in
Basics of design/design theory first, then digital design principles for web and mobile, then UX related topics like research, data, users etc...
bro I'm just getting started learning about this job. I really have no idea about this but im willing to learn. Thank you this very helpful
Bro, you’ve got this!! We all start in the very beginning. Keep learning and pushing yourself- one day you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come. Stoked for you and your journey!

WOW!! This is really helpful!! Thank you so much for sharing this information with us :D
Not coding... that's the part where I'm out... wondering if they really truly did anthing! Back in the day it made sense... especially when all you had to code with was a text field... Nowadays it seems crazy for most websites.
it depends on the person
Do you think it’s possible I can do web development/design f/t from home?
I’m an introvert and don’t hate people, but I don’t like office politics, clicks, favoritism, gossip, having to talk all the time, etc.
I hate those things also! This is one of the reasons why I want to do web development.
I think there is a place for everyone, I have been blessed to work at some amazing companies that really care about me, so don't give up hope on working at a physical location, but yes you can design or develop full time from home too.
Dionne Petty It’s great to hear that someone else hates toxic work environments! LOL
GREAT JOB ON THE EXPLANATION. I FOUND THE INFORMATION I WAS LOOKING FOR.
Yes!! So stoked!!
this is actually so inspiring.
makes me hungry for the job
keep it up! :D
Awesome 👍🏼
Jesse Showalter Awesome. Thank you for the reply! I’ll go check out Affinity.
I am Creative as well as curious.... And I've decided to become an ultimate web designer and developer.
Go for it 👍
Thanks for the clarity bro!!!
I am a web designer and web developer, so it is best to be both
Do what you love.
This is the exact video I'm checking for difference of web design and development
thanks for making good video
Thank you so much for the support! I am so stoked that you enjoyed the video!
Loved it! Helpful and informative! ☺
You know what, it's been two years since I watched this video, and back then I was a web designer and now I am learning JavaScript.
And i realized how stupid I am to not start learning web development right away. For the reason that I want to be soooooo gooood in web design.
I'm a guy who loves to solve how the engine works.😁
Good points Jesse. Love the way you separate the two divisions.
Thanks for the support 👍🏼
Thank you for the video Jesse. I really appreciate how you touched upon both professions because I'm both analytical and visually inclined/artistic so I've been trying to figure out whether I should get into web design or web development. Where does UX design fall here? and would you recommend us to start with web development or web design first if we want to do both?
UX is it's own discipline and you just need to start if you want to do both.
We’ve all come such a long way! Thanks so much for your insight, I appreciate you! 🤘
Superb video. Last bit really resonated with me.
Thanks for sharing your insight.
+Digitally Perry thanks for watching man, I'm glad it was a help to you. Let me know if there is anything else I can cover that would be helpful
😊
This was a very helpful video! Easy to follow and understand. Thank you so much!!
Hey, thanks for this video. I was wondering if you made sure to learn data structures and algorithms before becoming a web developer? Is it something you recommend for me to learn?
I am a front end guy so data structures and algorithms aren’t my thing
This video is beneficial for those people who are just starting or planning to switch their carriers and a little bit confused about which one is good for them.
Well I guess web dev is right for me since I learned HTML CSS and currently learns java
TRK_ DAS javascript?
you know java or java script, two completely different things
ItzGeigger ik I was just asking if he meant javascript cuz he mentioned html css and to complete that he needs js anybody up to be my html css teacher pls I suck at self learning
"However you do it...do it with excellence."
Yes!!!
Im doing both and it's very fine for me
right on!
That is what I want to do. 😊
Linnaia Crist you can start with the design first which is the right thing then move slowly to development
Lol, I still don't understand, when I design a website, I also add functionality to it, without that how will you see your work, on the page. So is this mean I am learning both web designing and development or just one?? , if one pls let me know which one.
I think I am learning both as I am making the view of the website and even adding functionality to it.
One more short question, don't we need to do those together, when we are writing code???
mohammed mohsen i also want to do is it possible in company or freelancing?
Its basically the Civil engineer and Architect of the web world
Client side aka Front-end Development
Great video! You broke the two down in such a simplistic manner. I have a much better understanding now. Thanks for sharing.
I’m so so glad I brought some clarity, Monet! Go make rad things! 💛
I'm doing #Both and it's Very Fine for #Me
Glad to hear it 👍🏼
Finally I see the difference between web development and web design
thanks a lot :D
Thanks a lot dude..💞.Really loved it..I am a developer.. Now I want to know about the designing techniques too😊
Awesome 👍🏼
colors man it's about them colors..... ohh yah and flow too can't forget about that flow!
Fantastic explanation my friend! You did an excellent job on this one.
Thanks so so much!
When I create a web, either design or develop, do I have to do web hosting as well?
You have to get it hosted but you dont have to do it your self.
@@JesseShowalter thank you for your response.
no problem
Thank you Jesse. This video is really helpful! Cheers!
Jesse Showalter , thanks a lot!
+cariocavampira 👍🏼
Great video. Thanks for sharing valuable information in video. Keep sharing.

That's reassuring Jesse, thanks
I love the way you explained this, very helpful.
I have designed my first website, like to learn both for sure! ( BTW. is on my channel... would like to hear some opinions.... )
Being a creative guy my whole life I really like the aspect to design my website the way I want.
But I think learning both will give me the Independence I am looking for at the end.
Anway great video!
Thank you so much! Really needed this lol
Stay at it man, nothing good comes without hard work 🤘
Which church do you go?
Rohjesei hey....
I wanna learn about website design can u plzzz help me
If you already know HTML and CSS, I'd say just start picking JS up. Try getting the functions going. It's pretty fun when you really wanna do it.
Much agreed!
I didn't know what I wanted to do until I was 25. Go to a school that will challenge you but don't go into massive debt for it.

Love the passion! So inspiring. I’m so interested in Web/Graphic Design and I’m stuck doing something completely unrelated. I wish I had the confidence to pursue it!
Go get after it!!! 🔥🤘
You’ve earned a sub lol. I will...one day.... 😂👌🏽
Both are great skillsets to pursue!
This is the video that led to me pursuing a career in UX Design, thank you mate...
Please do you know any online website I can learn either of them for free!
Brother love from Pakistan ❤
I loved your words
thank you very much bro. Now I have some ideas about this two.
Jesse Showalter, forgot Perl, again - one of the most used languages for any developement, including the web developement.
lol not sure if this is a joke or not
I can see myself as a crossover.
Hey Paul!! That’s amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing your story with me! I’m so stoked for you! You rock, (pun intended)
