  • Milford Sound is a stunning fiord in New Zealand's South Island, known for its high rainfall and dramatic scenery. It is one of the world's top travel destinations.
Milford Sound is one of the wettest places on earth, with an average annual rainfall of 6,813 mm (268 inches). It rains on about 182 days a year, and sometimes more than 250 mm (10 inches) of rain can fall in a single day. The rain creates hundreds of temporary waterfalls that cascade down the steep cliffs of the fiord, creating a spectacular sight. Some of the waterfalls can reach heights of over 1,000 meters.
The rain affects the color and clarity of the water in the fiord. The freshwater from the rain sits on top of the saltwater from the sea, creating a dark layer that blocks the sunlight.
The rain also enhances the beauty and mystery of the fiord, creating a misty and ethereal atmosphere. The rainbows, reflections, and contrasts of light and dark add to the charm and allure of the place.
