I really loved this video! my mother taught me to take care of my clothes and how to wash them and I will always be grateful for this. I love the combination of cashmere with silk and with elegant and timeless jewels. I live in northern Italy and I often wear warm clothes like cashmere sweaters that I wear under my coat : )

This video came at the most appropriate time. It has been much colder than usual in my area. I’d like add to your cashmere care tips.
I always wear some kid of layering tee or shirt. This is helpful for two reasons: one is I have sensitive skin and it helps with the itch factor and it reduces the amount of times the sweater needs to be washed. After I wear my sweaters I lay them flat to air a little and them spray them with the Laundress fabric freshener before I put them away. I recently bought the oxblood raglan crew from Mott and Bow and love it. Some much needed color in my very neutral wardrobe. The best cashmere I have found for the money is Naadam. The charcoal gray I bought last year has held up extremely well through many wears. The sweaters do run large so sized down.

I knit a lot of cashmere and wool sweaters and have always hand washed my sweaters. Never dry clean them ... too harsh. I typically use a product that doesn’t need to be rinsed out. The two that I like the best are Soak and Eucalan. Both products come in a variety of scents. Most important to remember is “a little goes a long way.”

I noticed your combination of the silk camisole and Mott & Bow cashmere sweater in your last video and loved how that looked with the pearl earrings you paired it with. In fact, I did a screen shot to remind myself to buy such items. Funny you posted this today! Great video & advice and you have officially inspired me to invest in some cashmere. Love the idea to pair with a silk scarf as well. I just saw a great leopard print Ralph Lauren silk scarf square that would look fantastic with a cashmere sweater. Thanks again Jennifer! Always love your videos, you are a true inspiration to me in so many aspects of life

Hi Jennifer, you have given a very nice and thorough explanation about cashmere. Silk and cashmere is divine!! Cashmere comes these days in thousands of qualities and the rule of thumb is that the more expensive it is, the better the quality is going to be, which is reflected both in durability and less pilling. For those new to choosing cashmere, my friendly advice is to start with a medium quality ( around $100/sweater) and once one becomes familiar with caring for it, move up to a better quality if one can afford($200/piece or even higher). I buy cashmere only in late spring when is 50% discounted, so I get a better quality for the same money. I store my sweaters in air tight bags over summer because moths love to get into them. It is a little bit more maintenance, but if one takes good care of cashmere, it lasts forever- I have some sweaters for over 20 years and still love them.

I wear cashmere on daily basis (live in Sweden). I never use detergents on cashmere. Detergents even the gentle ones wash away the natural fet in cashmere that makes the fibers deteriorate. with time (wash). Cool water is good enough. I often air my cashmere clothing so I reduce the washing part. Washing machines in Europe have good gentle hand wash programs so I do not need actual hand wash that causes wrinkles on the cashmere. Never hang.

    Hi Jennifer,
I have been looking for a lightweight thin layerable cashmere to add to my wardrobe this winter.
I live in Las Vegas, so our weather is similar to yours, so I don’t want a bulky/heavy/tight knit cashmere.
Of the ones you have mentioned, which brand would you say is the thinnest/lightest to wear?
    Mott and bow, perhaps?
I have several handed down from my mother, but they are a little too heavy for my needs.
    Thank you!

IMHO Mott and Bow cashmere is the softest, Everlane is much more scratchy by comparison.

I have just bought my first cashmere jumper from and English shop called Marks and Spencer. It was under £100 and, although not cheap, I find it to be quite affordable as cashmere goes. I have not washed it yet but my plan is to hand wash it as I want it to last for a long time. I have bought it in a cream colour so it goes with a lot of my clothes. I have also bought two more jumpers in merino wool (which i tolerate better than wool) and one in merino/cotton mix. I have black, navy and rust. I agree that neutral colours are best and those are my colour palette for winter, anyway. Since starting a ten item wardrobe (if you are interested I tagged you on Instagram a while ago) I have become more mindful of my purchases. I want fewer clothes that last longer. This video is very helpful as I was not sure whether I could wash my jumper at home.

I have 1 cashmere sweater and a cashmere scarf , along with lots of merino wool items. I hand wash and flat dry them all. It does take time, and I understand the desire for busy home keepers to put these items in a laundry bag and wash on the hand wash setting- but I would not! It may not be moths, but carpet beetles. They are very tiny and almost impossible to get rid of! I'm a knitter, so I'm on high alert for any fiber eaters lol. My best advice, is to MAKE SURE the sweaters are very clean when you store them for summer, and put them in a plastic tub container with a tight fitting lid. As for moths, they usually like to hang out in dark places when causing their mischief, so make sure all your animal fiber sweaters get plenty of sunlight, by wearing them regularly and storing them clean and as sealed as possible in the off seasons.

The Laundress detergent that's featured in this video is cedar-scented so that helps. I have it and it leaves a mellow scent. You can also use lavender sachets.

How about washing the sweaters in a tub with 2 cap fills of baby shampoo -- extra mild?

Cashmere - even high-quality - makes me so itchy! Does anyone have any ideas for dealing with it? Maybe I'll buy a long-sleeve silk undershirt to wear underneath to keep it from coming into contact with my skin.

Me, too. So itchy!! I have a cashmere coat and a zip-up hoodie and wear lightweight turtle necks with them so they don't touch my skin. Warm but I have to be too careful. Won't be buying more. My previous comment re: itch problem seems to have been removed. Hmmm.

You might just be allergic to goat hair.

Cashmere is not sweater, it is wool, usually simply known as cashmere, is a fiber obtained from cashmere goats or pashmina goats and other types of goat. It has been used to make yarn, textiles and clothing for hundreds of years.

So...does anyone know if I can cause my cashmere sweaters to get bigger so that they fit me better? I'd love to be able to do that instead of donating them...

You can try soaking them in cold water with some hair conditioner (sauve brand is fine) and vinegar. Then spin them dry separately, then put on a towel and stretch to your size.

Very sad to promote cashmere, I wish people would get educated on how cruel it is. I’m sorry, I’m not one to leave a negative comment , I really like your channel but I couldn’t help saying something.

I've seen people say that wearing wool is cruel and now you say that wearing cashmere is cruel. What would you suggest for those of us who live in sub-zero climates? Go naked? I wear real fur, too, because it's the only thing that keeps me warm in the winter. Are you having a stroke yet?

I wear my grandmother’s cashmere sweaters. It’s actually sustainable because they are supposed to last a life time. I also have a few my thrift stores.

I live in Minnesota and I don’t wear wool, fur or cashmere. Animals don’t have a voice, maybe do a little research on how cruel everything you feel the need to wear is. It is 2019 fur is dead. I’d be ashamed if I were you.

Goats and sheep are much more comfortable in the summer if their heavy winter wool coats are sheared. As it gets colder in the fall their coats grow again.
