I absolutely agree! It’s a great opportunity! The biggest advantage is, as you noted….no clean up! We got beat up with ice and heavy wet snow again this past winter. A lot of folks looking for people to take wood OR, the tree services cut the trees that take out wires, into log length…just go along the road and grab the logs. You do need to be mindful to not wander onto private property.
Keep snaggin that free wood! It’s definitely worth it!!

This video is a great example of what they say about "one man's trash." It's nice you were able to take care of someone else's problem which also solved one of yours, that's a good little firewood haul! Thanks for the LogOX shoutout too btw, as a family-owned small business, we certainly appreciate it!

Yep. Great advice Ed! 👍. At present, I have a skid of wood, cut and split, at the end of my driveway with a sign saying campfire wood FREE. Here is my situation. Trees down and cut. Some doesn’t split very well…and in my opinion, the odd shapes make it more difficult to stack…and usually the stack falls over creating me MORE work. However, I don’t find this until well, the rounds go into the splitter. So the irregular splits go onto a skid. Lots of people very happy to get the wood…especially those less fortunate…and I can’t keep up with the trees that need to be taken down.

Good find! Firewood is definitely a lot of work. Maybe get you a cart with big wheels to save you from carrying those pieces from point A to Point B.
Not trying to be critical, but after you put the chain back on and are setting the chain tension, you move the chain the opposite way that it cuts so that you could check slack. I highly recommend pushing it the way the chain cuts exclusively. That way, if the chain suddenly stops, you are pushing the back of the cutting teeth and not the front where the cutting edge is. A sharp chain can nick you pretty quick or even cut those nice gloves. My dad was a logger and he used the side of the screwdriver end of the saw tool to push against the back of the teeth, rather than use his hands when setting the chain tension. Happy Trails!

80 degrees! We haven’t even broken out of the 60s yet. Making firewood can be viewed as work… but if you only do it in doses until it stops being fun, then it’s great productive recreation 😆. Saves me thousands on propane for heating.

If you put firewood on the trailer the opposite direction, it rolls right off when you open the gate. Makes unloading much quicker.

I'm very similar to you. I've got 40 acres of woods which I think for firewood as well, but I'm ALWAYS looking on marketplace for free hardwood as well. Unfortunately, I live in such a remote area, that most of the ads that I see for free wood are 250 miles away or so, and the drive is not justifiable. But if/when I do come across some wood where the logistics workout, I'll go get it every time.

Good morning Ed, Nice find and it is great that you could drive right up to it. I have been eyeing the log ox, but it is quite expensive here in Canada. Good for you, wearing your PPE, especially since you were working alone. Recently two of my relatives had chainsaw injuries. I bought chaps the next day. Have a great weekend, Ben

Thanks Ben! The Log Ox is really handy. Bummer about Canadian prices. I’ve had friends get hurt with chainsaws too. You just don’t think it will happen until it happens!

    Good morning Ed
I have a whole lot of ash trees that we just logged off.
There is a lifetime supply of firewood here… and then some.
I will give you all you want.
You just have to come to Iowa and get it.
    😊

What would your recommendation be for dragging small logs, the Kubota BX or LX model tractor?

Depends how small, but I think you’d be happier with a B or LX series.
