    I am 63 yo but have only within the past 2 years tried to learn about Bass fishing after retiring. I don't have the resources you have but I'm not jealous... well maybe just a little bit LOL. It doesn't matter that we all can't afford the equipment you have. What matters is the way you present your videos, We can all learn something useful no matter where we are or what tackle we have. Thanks for all the time you put into sharing your knowledge.

    I looked through the comments and saw a lot of negativity based on your filming skills. Guys, keep in mind these two men are bass fishermen. Not some Hollywood trained cameramen. Just because they’re based in California doesn’t mean they’re naturally talented filmmakers, they’re just naturally talented fishermen. So please be respectful and constructive with your criticism.

    Wow...Just wow...you guys are jyst awesome in the way you teach, show, AND explain!!! Like I said in the past you teach like you are talking to a friend. Thank you for awesome videos. The other day I went through my gear and immediately knew what was for and why and realized I bought some of my lures because I saw them catching bass on other videos but did not know the type and color of water they were fishing because it was never mentioned...now to buy more lures that I don't have but really need and now realize why I wasn't catching bass with the lures I was throwing because I didn't know color choice depending on water color.

    Another great detailed video and I liked Tim fishing in the background to see how he fishes a jig. I'm one of those guys that have not caught a fish on a jig. I'm feeling confident in my chatter bait fishing, it's helped me understand how to rip through grass to elicit a strike.
    Now I'm looking forward to fishing a jig in that same grass. I'll keep you posted!

    Matt/Tim, this video "popped" up on my view list the other day, watched it, and I wanted to add a comment regarding your preference here for a moderate action rod. You mentioned that a rod that loads up with a stronger, deeper bend keeps the pressure on the jig hook where a fast action rod might straighten out and release the pressure . . . fish jumps and swims off. The other thing worth mentioning that I think most anglers just overlook, hold such a strong preference for fast action rods, is that a rod that bends more, like a moderate, shortens the lifting point and gives the angler much more power over the fish. I think most people think this is not so, that a moderate action rod is softer and less powerful. But, that extra bend greatly improves the fighting leverage an angler has. That adds more credence to going "moderate" for fishing a jig. Great video! Brad

    On the rod part makes sense. My phenix m1 7'8" is a mh-f but feels more like a mod-f. When hooking up a fish, just like you stated i feel in control of the fight. My jig rod just doesn't feel right, as if when the fish jumps and shake it head, i feel that i need to lean in more to keep the rod bend. Excellent info.

Anything from jig trailers to the long skinny split tail trailers for trolling broken back lures for stripers. Anyways just thought I'd drop that little tid bit just in case anyone is looking for pork.

    Thank you guys for all the info and tips! I have been bass fishing since I was a kid (43 now), and always just used texas rigged plastic worms, top waters, and small spinners. Many techniques have passed me by. My 11 yo son has really gotten me back into fishing since he was old enough to hold a rod. This old dog has since discovered wacky rigged stick worms, which are my new favorite, swimbaits like the keitech fat swing (which are his favorite) and so on. We just got a bunch of jigs for Christmas and can't wait to try them when we get back home to FL!

    I'm in the boat of thinking it's the hardest lure to get a bite with. It definitely I'd a confidence thing. I know I can throw a t-rig craw and get a bite, it's so hard to force myself to throw a jig, even with darn near everyone telling me jigs are awesome.

    • @natehalterman7509
      @natehalterman7509 7 років тому

      Bob Hammond I'm the same way. I use jigs and I catch fish on jigs but I have to make myself use it. I have more confidence in Texas rigged soft plastics. So I keep a jig and a Texas rig tied on when I go out. If the t-rig doesn't produce right away I throw the jig. If the jig doesn't hit I go back the the plastics. But you'd be surprised how often I don't have to go back.

    I love fishing a jig. In my opinion, there's rarely a wrong time to throw a jig. Lots of great info in this one-take seminar, awesome. One question... I am at a bit of a loss trying to decide on a trailer for the micro jigs or very small finesse style jigs. Most of the trailers that I have looked at are not in proportion (read: too big) with the size of the jig. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, gentlemen.

    • @TheDrewchebag
      @TheDrewchebag 7 років тому

      Ian Kehler try a double tail grub or a beaver style trailer. Also if it's too long cut off some of the body to make the bait sit closer to the head of the jig.

    Matt/Tim, do you guys notice any major differences in how to approach catching the three major species of black bass (Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted) aside from the obvious such as where they are located? Do you do anything different when concentrating on the different species using jigs or is it pretty much a one size fits all approach? I have little experience with spotted and smallmouth even though I've fished waters that contain them and jigs are usually one of my go-to lures at some point in the day.

    Awesome video. I love jigs. I caught my PB Largemouth 4.2 (may not be big in CA but in MD that's a pretty good fish) and my dad caught a 4.7 on a jig in the same day in the spring during the prespawn. But during the summer the lakes fill with grass and the only jigs u can use are swim jigs and flipping jigs on docks and laydowns. So if I want to drag something in a lake with grass, what do I use??

    • @tylerpinkley4287

    I live in east los angeles ive gone to alot of local ponds. And ive never caught a fish with a jig. Me and my bro throw the jigs bounce them on the floor, throw it in between grass and the fish dont bite. What works is drop shot and crank baits. Whats the reason why LA fish dont bite gigs

    • @robertramirez908
      @robertramirez908 7 років тому +3

      badboymorales I'm in Whittier so we probably hit the same ponds. Whatever you're throwing down size it. All our ponds are heavily pressured. Try 1/4 and under on 8lb or 6. Long drags and a twitch twitch, like a jerk bait. Good luck

    • @richardbossman9875
      @richardbossman9875 7 років тому

      I know Matt or Tim will have better advice but pressure and familiarity with the lure (especially the color and how it is fished) can make fish wary to bite. My jig success has picked up (also fishing pressured waters) by matching the hatch better, fishing a smaller profile jig and fishing it in ways other's may not be fishing it. Try imitating whatever the prevalent baitfish is as closely as possible and swim it away from cover immediately after it hits the water, or rip it up off the bottom and then kill it.

      I live in San Jose (your neighbors up in NorCal) and I feel your pain on never catching a fish on a jig. I always comfortable on ned rigs with a trick worm and like you said crank baits and drop shots. I always try for the jig but never seem to pull them out.

      badboymorales that's because the baits you fish catch more fish and a jig usually catches less but bigger fish, so, many times you have to wait more for a fish to bite a jig. My advice? Go out there and only take jigs with you! Fish them thinking you're fishing a worm. Drag it and give it some hops or twitches from time to time, pause them for 5 to 10 seconds... I spent years fishing a jig without a bite, and you know why? Because I fished them for some minutes, didn't get a bite and then switched to another bait. When I started to fish jigs for several hours in every fishing trip I started catching bass on them. I've caught some small bass (even fish under 1lb) on jigs, but I've caught a few bass bigger than any bass I've caught on worms. Also, use a sensitive rod. You should concentrate on the feeling of your jig when it is dragging the bottom. Fish them in and around cover. Use a smaller trailer and when you catch a few bass try switching to a bigger trailer. I recommend you start with a pitchin' jig or casting jig.

      badboymorales im no pro, but from my experience jigs work better for me during the fall transition and thruout winter than the hotter months... now swim jigs, on the other hand, i like more during pre-spawn and thruout summer. Now mind you, all body's of water are different, meaning where at one place bass might prefer a spinner bait, you go to another lake or pond, it seems like all they want is craw baits, all the time! Bass are the same everywhere, yet a little different from place to place, state to state... that last statement is pretty standard thinking if your gamed up, but everything els is just my opinion/experience, hope that helped #each1teach1

    Hey, awesome videos! In Sweden we mostly use 15-30 gram shads for redfin perch (we dont have bass here), or smaller cranks, lipless and bladebaits. Can you recommend one rod for shads and one for small cranks/lipless? Looking for higher priced rods, around 250-300 dollars.

    You list the Exage as your budget all around jig rod.. would you go with the 7'2 MH or the H?
    What would you consider the step up in the AP jig rod?
    Possibly the Dobyns Champion 734? I agree that I would like a more moderate bend and unfortunately in the Northeast
    no one carry the Dobyn's line in stock to handle....
    The rod I used to use was a mid 80's Loomis MB 843 that I built myself. Which had a somewhat moderate bend with a good tip....
    I have yet to come across a rod comparable and the newer GL3 rods seem much faster..... which is why I'm in search of another rod to replace it it.
    Believe it or not the rod that I actually liked in hand is the SM Tournament Concept TCS-C-701H... with the exception of the overall weight primarily because it's a production rod.
    Any insight would be greatly appreciated... suggestions in the middle of the two price ranges would be great also...
    Too many rods with not enough access to handle by the consumer is the problem....

    What kind of jig would you use in deep hydrilla? Like 15 -20 foot. Or would that be possible to even use a jig ? I'm fishing a super clear lake with lots of deep hydrilla and natural underwater cold springs.
