I was in the military. There's a lot of lack of sleep during training because you're woken up in the middle of night for guard duty every night but you cannot make up that time. It was common for me to hallucinate while driving due to this lack of sleep. They should've locked up the leadership for not setting up preventive measures.

Trust me, it had ALL to do w his rank. A full col in the army is essentially one step from the top of the ladder. If it had been a privates wife, it would have just been an accident, but because it was the wife of the brass, someone had to pay. Though ruining his life doesn't help anything or anyone, except the ego of that co.

Man I served a year after he joined. You can definitely tell them that you are tired. I remember when I was doing a similar training thing as him in a fuel truck. Saw a guy swerving off the road and blasted my horn to wake him up. I called in that the guy was sleeping and they swapped him out. You can't even drive home after doing a 24hr CQ shift because you are impaired. Yes you will get chewed out and in trouble but you won't risk injuring someone. I even had one of my friends fall asleep while driving one time in the field with me as his TC so I know it happens. Just switch out or refuse to drive

a 17y/o kid driving the truck, and no instructor with him -?? I feel like somebody else was at fault there. I mean, I get it, he was driving, but this isn't like civilian life, he didn't have a choice. As a civilian, of course he would be to blame, bc if you're that tired you absolutely shouldn't be behind the wheel. But that wasn't an option for him, and I feel like an experienced instructor would've been absolutely vital in a situation like that; meaning a situation where you're forcing a sleep deprived 17y/o to drive!! and then they sent the poor kid to prison at that young age.

To anyone thinking or saying anything like “wait he said he had been sleeping before he was driving AND he said that he didn’t really do much all day... so why was he so tired???” Let me tell y’all something... if his day was not as lax as it had been and if he had had the opportunity to actually do something to get his heart rate up he probably wouldn’t have fallen asleep at the wheel... something people don’t realize is that when your body has gotten used to being active and you have a routine that keeps you going, your body will falter if that is delayed or abruptly stopped... So because his day was thrown off and it had become (in simple words) a “lazy” day, his body/mind went into relax mode and he felt extremely fatigued. Ask any athlete that trains hard a minimum of 5x a week! If they falter or mess up their routine their mind thinks “WEEKEND!” in a way and they go into recoup mode which leads to feeling totally and utterly EXHAUSTED. I work a fast paced job and if I sit during a short 5-10 min smoke break that down time slows me down and I get tired, but if I stay standing and pick up trash or cig butts while on my break it keeps me “on my toes” and I can keep the fast pace. Make sense?

      Ed
It’s not about being weak minded. Period. It all stems around the fact that his routine got F’d up. I’m not saying he didn’t have ANY fault in the matter! I’m simply saying that routine is important and scrambling a routine will drag you down faster than doing a triathlon simply because your body goes into what it thinks is off time. Most people don’t know and/or realize that. I understand my comment could’ve been taken as I was saying he wasn’t guilty but that is not what I was meaning. Getting behind the wheel of any vehicle while tired is just as bad as getting behind the wheel intoxicated in my eyes. I know he didn’t really have a choice in the matter but at the same time I firmly believe whatever punishment received for refusing to drive would’ve been way worth it compared to everything that happened because he didn’t refuse to drive. But I also believe that the higher up that made him drive should’ve gotten into some trouble too. But if that were the case we would have to live in a perfect world and unfortunately for us we don’t.

Man I was a Motor Transport Operator in the Marine Corps and have done a ton of convoys here in the u.s and in Afghanistan ... it’s very easy to fall asleep at the wheel. You aren’t allowed to listen to music while driving , the trucks never have working ac (the vehicles can reach over 100 degrees), and you drive in full tactical uniform. I was trained on the same base as this dude and it sucks. They wake you up super fucking early to go work out for hours. We use to run 5-10 miles every morning and then go drive these huge killing machines. I would say at least in my case 95% of the marines in my mos platoon were all under 21 and there were even guys who never even had a civilian license before. They do set up some guys for failure. The motor transport mos is the laughing stock of the military. When people fail their job schools they automatically send them to become motor transport operators. They do not properly screen a lot of guys and just like the dude said he didn’t have an instructor next to him. That was a huge failure on the army , but they will never admit that. Careerist in the military are always protected by others while people serving in their first 4 years get the maximum punishment and blame for any incidents. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve almost fallen asleep at the wheel or while being the vehicle commander (the non driver) I feel bad for this guy because like I said before the army fucked him over period.

I personally know a marine who fell asleep and rolled a 7-ton, killing himself and injuring the 17 marines in the back. All because the command kept him up until 0200, and had him leave at 0530 to fucking drive.
It’s so common it would blow your mind. I’ve had so many arguments, damn near fights with incompetent officers and staff ncos, because they would needlessly keep the marines awake during training ops, knowing that they have to drive in the morning.

I put my heart in and was kicked out for nothing but having a pipe on base. Had over 11 random drug tests and never popped Bc I never did anything while in. To Cameron in the video: did the cadre who was in your chain of command during AIT get in any sort of trouble for failing to follow SOP? You mentioned instructors should be in each vehicle TCing for a soldier-in-training to be an 88M and that wasn’t the case (it was another S.I.T. if I heard right). My background: I spent 10yrs as an 11B, was a DS at Ft Jackson for 2.5yrs (got out in early 2013) so I have some TRADOC experience and generally cadre are supposed to be more responsible for trainee mistakes than the trainee themselves to a certain extent. One other question; did the military charge carry as a felony on your record? Since you got a General under Honorable discharge, that’s not a barrier for hiring like a Dishonorable would be...but curious if there’s a felony associated with it or how that works. Anyways, I’m glad you’re out and can move on with your life but I am sorry you joined to better yourself and got hemmed up. You did more than most by raising your right hand and swearing an oath.

Granted, I couldn't listen to the entire interview, but unlike you thanking the lord that she wasn't injured, I heard no remorse from this guy for what he did. "Dang, I'm tired Bro, like I been sleeping all day, I don't want to do it." ...this guy never should have been in the military.
I was 17 yrs old when I was in the infantry, and our training period consisted of 48-72 hr periods where we got a handful of 30-40 min sleep breaks, between which we marched night and day with our gear...what this guy did is inexcusable.

Rashad Crump nah man, was in the military. Great years, helped me land great careers to afford cars and homes. It doesn’t just stop at cars. I feel for the guy but I’d punish his leadership. But before that I’d grill this dude over his shortcomings before the fact. Sleepers are a fixable discrepancy

People dont understand how tired you truly get in the military. To this day I can fall asleep literally anywhere lol.

Take advantage of the time and plan your future...Prison makes a smart person smarter and a dumb person dumber. Meaning don't try to figure out a different way to break the law. Use that time to plot, plan, your future!!!! One thing about prison they always have empty steal "beds"!
