Using the Naga model with more of a half-Troll shape and current awareness of Troll Loa, are all easy and valid ways to reintroduce the character properly. Others like Mueh'zala or Bwonsamedi were likely Trolls that became Loa due to extraordinary circumstances (in Bwonsamedi's case, he started "lesser" until he could monkey-paw more influence and eventually overcome Mueh'zala for his realm of magic). The line between Patron God and Devotee is here and there after you can cast stupid powerful magic or have enough people at your back hyping you up.
