1) this early brainstorming period is critical for the CREATIVITY JUICES! we want your college essay to reflect you. we might get overly critical of our initial ideas if we show it to an authority figure too early on, like a parent
2) your fam might have preconceived ideas of what your essay SHOULD be about. while those ideas are valuable, make sure to create some room for your own original ideas to flourish as well.
3) too many cooks in the kitchen can ruin a dish especially at an early stage!
That’s why it can be helpful to have a nonbiased, outsider third party (me!) who doesn’t know you at all for you to bounce ideas off of in the early brainstorming stages. as your college writing coach, I’m getting to know you as the admissions officers would: from an outside POV.

This is how I feel about my godmother and my resume she’s so well intentioned but it’s not 1982 anymore and tries to set the font size to 6 for no reason other than she thinks it looks “more professional” girl they can’t and won’t read that lol

why?
you don't want to kill your creativity too early in the process! you might have a harder time finding your genuine voice if you let other voices in too early
