    In this video I unbox and use the new MagBox 24 Octa Softbox for the first time on a styled bridal portrait shoot on the beach.
    I absolutely love MagMod products so I was really excited to use the MagBox on this shoot. I was using the Pro Kit, which includes a MagShoe, MagRing, gels, two diffusers and a really cool bag to store it all in.
    As well as giving my first impressions on the MagBox I also show you behind the scenes on the bridal shoot and explain how I took some of my favourite photographs.
    For more information on the MagBox, please visit MagMod's website: magnetmod.com/
    All photographs on this shoot were taken on my Sony A9 mirrorless camera, with my 35mm and 85mm lenses. I used a Godox AD200 with the MagBox to give me even more power to overpower the natural light.

    Neil: Crazy! I love the soft light and the composition. You killed it with that sunset background, soft light and reflection in the water. As a wedding photographer time is crucial.....I have sacrifice time over quality in the past because I. Don’t like the look of ambient light images (especially when a client is paying me thousands). I want them to get the look and style that they saw on my website, so I always carry both 28 inch parapop soft boxes. They’re still not as fast as the mag box because I have to mount my ad200s in the speed light bracket first. This Magmod is the answer to solving the problem of time over image quality. Very nice video, I’m going to order two.....

    Hi Neil, best part of a year on from this video I’d be interested in knowing if you still use this at weddings/portrait sessions or if you’ve gone back to just the speedlight with maybe some form of smaller diffusion?
    I did a portrait shoot the other day and found the wind to be too strong for the umbrella I had, and this bit of kit does really interest me, but my worry is I may find convenience and less fear of the wind ends up winning through over using the magbox - would appreciate your thoughts! Great shots as always! 👍

    Very interesting shoot Neil, as always great images. When using Light stands do you not place the leg on the stand towards the model (Bride)so if the wind blows and did catch it, it can't fall towards the model it will fall either side but not towards her. Keep up with more uploads Neil.

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  5 років тому +2

      Thank you very much Tim! I must be honest and say that I haven't really ever thought about that. I don't think I would use a softbox on a stand if the wind was strong and I thought there was a chance it may blow over

    • @timtog
      @timtog 5 років тому

      @@bradena.1194 Not a problem anything, to help. While studying photography 10 years ago the first thing we did in the studio was Health & safety and this was one of the first thing the tutor showed us, about pointing the leg of the flash tripod stand towards the model, you had lots of mains cable coming from studio heads that should be taped down and a possible tether lead, flash bulbs and metal reflectors on the studio heads. Maybe makeup artist,hairdresser, assistants all milling around and the chance of one of the light stands, knocked or caught and pushed towards the model, you don't want to have anything crashing onto his or her face scarring them and ruining their career. So with tripod leg pointing towards the model it can't fall that way. Same outside you don't know when a gust of wind could blow up and catch it so just in case have the the flash stand the same and even better have an assistant holding it. Wished I had learned more and be doing as well as Neil, but I think I have lost confidence in myself and guess I maynot be a people person.

    nice tuto. so, it seems you had enough power with only one ad200pro in HSS 1/8000sec ? this week-end i did shoot in my studio and was doisapointed of the modeling light of ad200pro through the softdiffuser. impossible to focus on eye with my d750. i needed to add "neon" ceiling lights. any trick to add a light in studio with a ad200pro (led panel ? walking led velcro on stand?...) ? already tried a ad400pro+S2 bowens adapter + magbox ? Another remark, I sweat big drops attaching the maggrip on ad200pro; it should be 2cm bigger, same reamrk for V1 round head but also for V860II. the maggrip seems more stronger than in old magmod tutos where they expanded a lot to cover the head.

    My issues with the Softbox Kit - 1) the case strap is too tight so it's hard to put over the shoulder, 2) the magnets for the diffusion material are quite weak, so it can be tricky putting on even when the wind is moderate,, 3) It's a little small for nice, soft light, but works well with dramatic images 4) It's hard to put the Godox V860-II S on the Magshoe, but that's probably the fault of the speedlight foot as I don't have the same problems with the Canon or m43 versions of the same speedlight.

      Thank you very much Robert! I actually just removed the stand using content aware fill in Photoshop, but really the best way to do it is to take two shots and merge as you described but as I was working so fast in the fading light I didn't have time. At first you need a hss able flash. At second you have to set hss on flash. Canon and Sony can flash with hss.

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  5 років тому

      Yep, you need to make sure that your transmitters allow you to use HSS. With my Nikon DSLRs I had to change a setting in the menus to allow HSS, I'm not sure if it's the same with Canon? If it doesn't work for you I would guess that your transmitters may be the issue

    hello,
    I ama new fan of magbox for godox V1 and one ad200pro.
    A few questions about magbox before purchasing it :
    - when only one ad200pro is used, isn't it too offset with respect to center of the parabol silver and fabrics (standard fabrics and focus one) ?
    - in a godox softbox umbrella, the V1/ad200pro is oriented to the silver parabol to reflect the power. in magbox the ad200pro comes from rear and is directly oriented to the fabrics without any direct reflexion on silver. is it normal ?
    - in most of softbox we have a beauty dish plate when we have a flash coming from rear so power is reflected to silver again. how does magbox silver coating is used in a magbox ?
    - isn't 60cm too small ? we often use a 85cm with a ad400pro (=2xad200pro) outdoor...
    - what is so special on focus fabrics ? better than a normal fabrics with a grid ?
    - isn't magbox light too harsh, even with focus diffuser ?
    - is magbox so quick install with respect to ez glow softbox with godox bowens adapter ?

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  4 роки тому

      Hi Marc, thank you very much for your comment and questions! I think you have to remember though that I am a wedding photographer and not a studio photographer - and the Magbox is primarily aimed at wedding photographers. So for me the massive advantage which the Magbox offers is speed, because at a wedding that is vital. I can set it up in well under a minute and put it away just as quick. If it were any bigger it would be great for portability. I have only ever used one other softbox so I can't compare it to others. All I would say is that for wedding photography, if you want a softbox, the Magbox is fantastic. How well it compares to larger and softboxes with plates inside though, I don't know I'm afraid

  • @trevr10
    @trevr10 5 років тому

    Thank you for an interesting and informative video. I looked at the UK price for the complete kit as you were using and it is around £550. I am currently using an SMDV 60cm which is just as fast to assemble and take down with inner and outer diffusers that can be folded with the softbox. However it can only take 1 speedlite or AD200/360. I use the now discontinued Godox bulb adapter which allows it to quickly slip over the bulb and lock it in place. What I would be interested in seeing tested is the MagBox with the MagBox Bowens speedring. This combination comes in at a much more affordable £250 and would allow me to use my AD-B2 with 2 tubes or of course any of the other Bowens fit heads. I wonder if this is something you would be trying in the future?

      That is so lovely to hear, thank you Tony! Yes, you can use MagMod equipment with just about any speedlight. The MagMod modifiers themselves are not brand specific, they are just attachments which you place over the speedlights. I use the Flashpoint R2 ProII trigger, which is excellent for use with Sony cameras and Godox speedlights. Another popular trigger is the Godox XProS. I hope this helps? Please just ask if not!

    Hi Neil!
    I have been wanting to get one of these, as I am traveling to Barbados soon!
    I saw this at the photography show and the only thing that put me off was the footprint of the mag ring and how I would pack this?
    Having the kit bag would be a waste of time as I would have a think tank airport take off roller as my hand luggage!
    The size of the ring would make it impossible to put in the hand luggage, and this leads in to my next question how the hell do you pack for somewhere like this when the hand luggage limit is very limited.
    I would love the mag box but I think the case is a waste of time as it's just another piece of luggage !

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  5 років тому +1

      I think the only way you could take this abroad would be to pack it in the hold. I think that would be fine as it is very sturdy. Can't see how you could fit it in hand luggage which, as you say, you'd want to reserve for cameras and lenses

    • @nigeljameshughes3722
      @nigeljameshughes3722 5 років тому +1

      @@NeilRedfern yes I agree but you would need to pack it in your hold luggage case, you could not put it as a separate piece of luggage in its own case! As far as I have researched. Your allowed one hold luggage bag and then one cast in which is sad to weigh 5 kilos which in honesty is a joke, the airport take off weighs in at around 4 kilos anyway!

I've seen multiple reviews of the Magbox and they always talk about it like the shape of the softbox somehow removes the hotspot - total bs... If anyone is curious I can send them my test images that shows the nasty square shaped hotspot in the middle of the softbox

      The Pro kit is very expensive in Germany. 675 Dollar 😮 400 Dollar the starter kit.

      @@etniesbgs Hi, yes you are correct, but I then swapped it for the standard diffuser before I started shooting as I wasn't sure what the focusdiffuser was actually for? Sadly yes, it is very expensive. I ordered mine when it was in the Kickstarter stage so it was a little bit cheaper.

    Hi Neil!
    I noticed you were using the ad200 I use mitros+ flash guns, do you also use normal flash guns?
    I know the ad200 is more powerful but I love the phottix flash guns so want to stick with the eco system

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  5 років тому

      Good question! I bought the AD200 for the extra power, and in turn had to then buy a Godox trigger but I absolutely love Phottix and still use the stratos for multispeed light set ups where I don't need HSS because they are just so simple to use. In those instances I use my old Nikon speedlights still. I would really like to try the Mitros but I will probably go down the Godox route in the future for ease.

      @nigeljameshughes3722 5 років тому +1

      @@NeilRedfern Yes the Mitros+ do have HSS facility, but going down the Godox route makes complete sense and the flash guns have the new type battery! A friend of mine had three AD200's but did find them a little un reliable! He has now gone down the Profoto route and has 1 x A1 2x B10 which are quite pricy; don't get me wrong the build quality and feel of the B10's are top quality.

      I haven't found the AD200 unreliable but I don't like how big it is. The Profotos look awesome, but as you say, very very expensive....
