Love this explanation. Though I've heard Randy play using this stuff for decades & even heard him and Michael (Brecker) discussing it between themselves & even with Sanborn, it's great to hear him really lay it out!
Great to see him communicating the message that he has found these things out for himself by listening not necessarily following a doctrine. important for all people learning to play and extending their depth of jazz to know that they are capable of doing this via their own instinct and inquisition..
Guitarist here. This was useful though. The cliche on guitar is to emphasize notes with vibratos. At the end of the video where he uses dynamics to emphasize them is very impressive, and not something I would've listened out for. Nice one.
"Sketch Works" by Bugs Bowers. Great tip. Bowers also published excellent chords' and scales' books too with rhythm exercises; so much fun to play. Many of his books are hard to find so do a search and if you find one, definitely buy it if you can.
There’s no way anyone is moving their tongue side to side while playing? …really? I’ve played trumpet for 40 years …I seriously can’t even imagine that 🤷♂️ I’ll give it a try though 😂
I'm playing 46 years.......always learning new techniques. Thank you for posting. Randy is great.

4:06 to 4:15, that was cool. Sounded like a drum solo in there. I'd like to apply this to my guitar single-note phrasing. Thanks for the information!
Never heard of anyone moving their tongue from side to side before - it's not how I've heard doodle tounging explained before.

That horn looks small what kind is it ?
Sorry, I don't know what Randy was playing.
Hello, what's the name of this technique? and where can you read about it? thanks!
Hi, I'm a WW player, so can't speak to trumpet technique, sorry. I would just google Randy Brecker tonguing technique maybe?
I don't get what he means by moving the tongue from side to side but he pronounces it doodle doodle.
What was the name of the book he mentioned around 2 mins? Couldn't quite pick that out...
+Mike Givens I think it's "Sketch Orks"
+frew111e
Sketch arts.
+Eli Sullivan No it's definitely "Sketch Orks".

Doodle schmoodle - Was Ella limited to Ta's & Da's? ....
No and neither is he. It's a -5 minute video for crying out loud. He's also explaining it to a crowd that's obviously novice.
