  • This Painting name is Café Terrace at Night by Van Gogh.
Café Terrace at Night is a picturesque portrait of a quiet night in Arles, back in the 19th century. But how intriguing is it to look at this painting and see so many bright colors, in a scene depicting a nocturnal moment? Don't you find it odd?

This is a favorite of mine do to the coloring and the colors - it makes you join in on the charm of the location. The cafe is like an island and focus point for the attractive neighborhood.

I love the use of colors in this painting. It's as if, if you were allowed to touch the painting, the part at the café would feel warm and the rest would feel cold.

His medication and drinking absinthe made yellow brighter. In his mind, yellow lit up the night.

I just adore the vibrancy of the colors of Van Gogh’s paintings! He has to be up there as one of my favorite painters. ❤️
I love that about the night being more alive than day because that quote reminds me of “Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera and I like that song way too much. 😂

I always found the theory that this is actually a depiction of the Last Supper fascinating. ✨ ✨✨

I would like to point out that there was a relatively unknown period in Vincent van Gogh's life :
He was very religious and surprised his fellow human beings by speaking God's word...He spoke primarily to workers and day laborers
He did his job so well that he became known and respected in the area for giving people comfort and strength at the same time
This circumstance did not suit the local church
He was barred, under penalty of punishment, from continuing to minister to others as a called lay preacher
This led to him picking up brushes and paint boxes without having painted
This then insignificant and shabby looking man was definitely graced by God
Thanks for the wonderful explanations 🌈

Love the painting. But, I've been to Arles and saw the cafe in 2014, which, sadly, is a notorious tourist trap. It had a 1.5 star rating on Yelp, which was probably a little generous.

I've been there a couple of times, thought it a wonderful place to visit along with the rest of Arles where Van Gogh lived and painted.
Auvers sur Ouise where Van Gogh died and is buried alongside his brother is also well worth a visit. Many paintings were made there, the most famous being the local church.

His last name is pronounced Van Goffe, not Go, he reportedly hated the way the English mispronounced his last name.
