Vincent van Gogh the Maverick Genius - A Story of Passion, Tragedy, and Legacy
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 чер 2024
- Vincent Van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert in the southern Netherlands, the son of a pastor. In 1869, he took his first job, working in the Hague branch of the international art dealing firm Goupil’s. During this time he began to write to his younger brother Theo, a correspondence which continued for the rest of Van Gogh's life and gives up such insights into his life.
Van Gogh's moved to London where he briefly worked as a teacher. Later he moved to Paris, again working at Goupil’s but he was dismissed in 1876 for lack of effort. He in finally became deeply involved in Christianity, and worked briefly as a preacher in the Borinage, a mining community in southern Belgium.
After failing at other occupations he decided, in 1880, at the age of 27, to become an artist. He travelled around the Netherlands, teaching himself to draw and paint made possible with the financial support of Theo. In 1886, Van Gogh moved to Paris, where he met Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pissarro and Gauguin, with whom he became friends. His style changed and became looser and lighter under the influence of Impressionism.
In 1888, Van Gogh moved to Provence in southern France, where he painted his famous series 'Sunflowers'. Gauguin joined him but they did not get on well. Gauguin criticised Van Gogh’s work and as a result he attacked Gauguin with a razor. Not long afterwards Van Gogh cut off his ear and took it to a local brothel in Arles.
Time spent in the asylum in Arles, southern France followed where he swung between periods of inertia, depression and incredibly concentrated artistic activity. He was released in late 1890 as ‘cured’ but on the 27 July 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in a field near the church in Auver sur Oise, north of Paris. He died in the Auberge Ravoux, a small bar in Auver sur Oise two days later.
I created this documentary film of the Life of Van Gogh (35 minutes in length) for use in art societies and art groups. The film covers all the major aspects of Vincent Van Gogh's life from his early life in England, his relationship with his brother Theo, through being a preacher to eventually, at the age of 27 , becoming an artist. The film covers all the important elements of his artistic life, including, his moves to Paris and Arles, his most famous paintings including the painting of the sunflowers, his short and turbulent association with Paul Gauguin which contributed to the incident that led to him cutting off of his ear and his move to the asylum at Saint Remy. The video also covers Van Gogh's move to Auver sur Oise, his time spent with Dr Gachet and his final demise in July 1890. Loving Vincent, I wanted to make a special effort to do justice to this very famous artist.

im so thankful van gogh had a brother like theo. he helped him so damn much and never once asked anything back, wonderful heart.
Yes, without Theo I'm not sure he would have lived as long as he did.
@@ArtHistorySchool yes sir you are right.. Theo also did great job.
And vincent van gogh is daimond. He was great artist... He saw world through his own inner eyes..he was true human... Also failed in love.... Who fails in love... Then he becomes someting else
Without Theo we would not have Vincent
Indeed, but Vincent was also the same. He gave his house to a poor widow and slept on straws
Yess his brother supported him so much and was younger than him but always helped whenever he needed.
Your film really had an impact on my eight year old son. He talks about it all the time and is really moved that Van Gogh suffered so much in his life, had so much support from his brother and died without knowing the appreciation his work would eventually receive. Thank you so much Paul for your wonderful videos.
That's wonderful to know. I always found children would really relate to van Gogh when I taught in schools. I hope your son really enjoys his own art too.
❤❤❤❤❤
Amaising..thank you sir
I’m just blown away by how much you put into these videos! You bring the person to life… a terrific learning experience! Thank you!
The sad truth, people only appreciate the person once he's gone. 🥺
You are bloody amazing in portraying Van Gogh. I felt every emotions. Bravo!
Thank you, I enjoyed making the video. Cheers
I never though I would enjoy art history this much. Thank you Mr. Priestley for such a lively and passionate rendition of Van Gogh's life. I read and watched many article and video about Van Gogh. This one moved me.
That's wonderful, really pleased you enjoyed my video. Cheers
Love the hard work you've put into this video. One of the best on Van Gogh. Feel like I'm there. Thanks
Wow, thank you! Much appreciated. Cheers
Beautiful video. It brings me to tears the tormented existence of poor Vincent, and you omitted with so much class the most gruesome parts! Pure power and passion. Being as colorful and breathtaking all his paintings always seemed to me an ode to obsession, each stroke done with a maniac fixation. Thank you for the video
You are very welcome. Really pleased you enjoyed the video - he really was an amazing artist/ Cheers Paul
What a genius and humane way you have picked O Vincent, in this unique, personal and poignant re-telling of your life story.
Take a bow, Mr Priestly. What a gift you have! ❤
Many thanks, much appreciated. Cheers
I love Vincent Van Gogh, he my favourite artist of all time and he was wonderful to have an brother like Theo to support Vincent, bless his heart for helping and supporting Vincent, Theo is the nicest brother.
Yes, he was a great brother to Vincent.
Thank you, Mr. Priestley, for a well-done and captivating story that introduced me and my 11yr old to the life of Van Gogh.
You are very welcome, I'm glad you both enjoyed my video. Cheers Paul
This is just amazing! Thank you for creating a biography of Vincent Van Gogh that all ages can watch and gain insight on this famous artist.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
I love you’re making the point that he only had a room in Arles … that’s comforting.
He was very poor at this point
This was so touching, informative, and entertaining. I think you have a bit of Theo and Vincent in your own heart - your generosity, talent, and passion for what you are doing is so unique, human and real, and I'm so happy that there are people like you in this world!
Wow, thank you. I try my best and it's nice to think there are others out there in the world that appreciate these great artists as individuals struggling to live a life. Best wishes Paul
I couldn’t agree more!
I cryed so much. Thank you for making me feel Vincent, my fellow painter. Thank you, I love you, God bless you.
Wow thank you, glad you enjoyed my video. Cheers
I love how you narrate it :3 full of emotions
That's what I tried to do, give an insight into the man. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Cheers Paul
His isolation led to so much inner turmoil. He had so much rejection to deal with in his life amongst his genius. He left the world such beauty. Sad life. Thank you for the video Very good acting.
Yes, he did have a turbulent life. I wonder what he would make of his fame today.
I rmbr theatrics like this when taken to an acting theater while in elementary school. I appreciated how alive the actors made it come. We need more of this. Great job.
Many thanks, but I have never been near an acting school, so I'm not sure you could really class my efforts as acting. Nevertheless, thanks for the kind comment. Cheers
@@ArtHistorySchool Then I admire and congratulate the passion.
EXCELLENT!! EXCELLENT!!! The actor was as if he was Vincent himself!! This was so inspiring to me~at age 63..Ive struggled with my art because I havent stuck with it throughout the years..practicing everyday..now finally Im trying to get it all back..I keep remembering what Vincent said so many times in this movie.. "I paint everyday" "I draw Everyday"...Thats what I need to do!
I'm glad you enjoyed my 'acting', the video took me a long time to put together. Good luck with your drawing, I'm sure you'll succeed. Cheers Paul
Artist in School marvelous!!
This 2 dimensional charicature does NOT portray Vincent Van Gogh. It is fine for audience under the age if 10, and the sets all look fantastic, but the script and the acting are strictly for small children. This is NOT how Vincent was.
If you can't understand his art (which the script writer and actor do not,) ,then read Vincent letters to see how inaccurate this portrayal is.
Amazingly told!! Love every video of yours!!! Thank you for being one of the guardians of our art history!!
Many thanks, really pleased you enjoyed it. Cheers
12 min and 1 sec in, that drawing of Sienna was upright AMAZING!
I drew and filmed that bit separately, then put the two films together. Glad you liked it. Cheers Paul
A very touching way of telling Van Gogh's life.
Many thanks, much appreciated.
I watched Monet and now found this one - soooooo great for younger people. And also for old people like me who have studied Vincent in depth. I love the technology that allows you to be IN the paintings! You in his bedroom made me cry. Thank you so much for making this introduction to Vincent - I love him to the very core of my being. xo
Thank you, that makes all the hard work worthwhile. Cheers Paul
Cheers Paul - certainly a different way of presenting Vincent and I enjoyed it very much👏🎨 well done.
Thanks, I am really pleased you like the video. Cheers Paul
I love his first self-portrait, it`s wonderful!
It certainly is.
Excellently done Stanley. Wow, I am in awe. What a great way to teach - it can`t get any better than this. 🙂
Wow, thanks!
Art History School
: SOOO INTERESTING & MOVING!
Thank you
This is heartbreaking. I have a deep love for Vincent, and it makes me so sad to know that this is what he experienced. If only he had known. Thank you so much for this.
He did have a tough life, many think today that he was Bi-polar, which explains to some extent his character.
Just viewed film "Loving Vincent" - moving and visually compelling. I thought I heard your voice in there somewhere, but did not see your name in the credits. That must have been a thrilling project to be part of - you can see how everyone is captivated and motivated by Vincent's art. Genius, tragedy, and mystery. I enjoyed your essay here into Van Gogh. Hoping to get to Amsterdam someday to see the museum. Until then will continue to wonder in awe by his work. Best.
No I wasn't involved in the "Loving Vincent" project unfortunately. I'm pleased you enjoyed my video on the great man. I've been to the museum in Amsterdam it is well worth a visit. Cheers Paul
I'm so happy to have found your channel here, I've followed your other one for a long time and had no idea this one existed. Paul, you are amazingly awesome!
P.S..... you deserve an Oscar for this, it's wonderful!
Wow, thank you. Not sure my 'acting' could be mentioned in the same sentence as 'an Oscar'. Cheers
Why did I tear up at the middle.
I have no idea, are you going to enlighten us? Cheers Paul
For the same reason I did. We can all identify with Vincent’s pain on some level. For me, the love his brother showed was very touching and also, the image of people scorning Vincent as he painted at night with candles on his hat. I actually have a copy of that painting in my house...This video was excellent!
This is so wonderful... but.. it made me cray and cry.... I hope millions see it, so they can begin to understand the life of an artist......I am a painter.
Really pleased you enjoyed my film. Cheers
Mr. Priestly, I’ve enjoyed watching many of your videos, but I think this one was my favorite, (even though I’m not a big fan of Van Gogh). I think you did a wonderful job of portraying his sad descent into madness. Bravo!
Wow, thanks! Really pleased you enjoyed, this one took the longest to produce. Cheers
This was amazing! Thank you very much for making it and sharing it here on UA-cam!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
when I was a child I saw Vincent's painting "field workers". It was the first of Vincent's paintings I had seen. It was such a friendly painting, so vivid colors, lovely fields and the figures where so...familiar, although I have never lived in the country. Later I saw the sunflowers, they were so alive and bright and beautifly strange, innocent and talkative! Since I was a child I thought this painter was truly a good-hearted guy..! I find such purity in his paintigs and such playful colors.I love all his paintings. I have been impressed by other painters also, but I think if I could live in a place with Vincent's paintings , they would truly and deeply brighten my life!
Yes, he was a truly great painter. Despite his problems he captured the world in a way no other painter has achieved.
This video is amazing. It makes me sick that great well thought videos like this do not have more views.
Really pleased you enjoyed the video, hopefully it will get more views as time goes by. Cheers
Such a tragic and beautiful history as his art it self, indeed beautifully dramatized, deeply indebted for have the opportunity to enjoy it.
Thank you. Cheers
Okay. So at first I was like why choose this silver fox to play a ginger. Now I'm 22 mins in and I'm absolutely beside myself. He put me through my emotions and I'm literally afraid of watching the end, even though I know how it ends...
When you are a one man show you have to do everything yourself. So it had to be a silver fox, didn't really fancy delving into ginger hair colour. Hope you managed to get to the end of the video. Cheers Paul
Artist in School Oh I absolutely did! I watched it twice last night in fact, I absolutely loooove Vincent and I was looking through a bunch of documentaries last night, but without a doubt none can hold a candle to yours. It's one thing to be told about his experiences, it's a completely other to see and really feel it. Thank you so much for this, you should be absolutely proud. (PS, silver fox more than works for you 😉 )
Wonderful, I'm really pleased you ' got ' the feel of the video, that's what I hoped people would get from the video. Many thanks Paul
What a brillant concept for portraiing his life and these of the other artists. Outstanding, thanks for your effort..
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Cheers
WOW… I’m so grateful for this omage to Mr. Van Gogh… heartbroken and demonized by his own mind… so sad… Seems to be the Bain of these genius’s lives… bless them for their invaluable contributions to the art world. Thank you one and all… you were all so successful just not in your time… I’m so sorry… We love you💕☮️♥️😢
Really pleased you enjoyed the video. Van Gogh was a true genius.
Wonderful production. Van Gogh is one of my favorite artist. Thank you.

I can’t thank you enough for this wonderful series. You are a wonder. Your passion and love of Art is palpable. What would this sad unenlightened World be like without people like you? I have visited your channel more times than I can count. In times of happiness it was like visiting an old friend, in harder times it was sometimes my only solace. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Glad you liked the film, you should check out the other films of great artists I have on my channel; ua-cam.com/users/artistinschoolcouk Cheers Paul
So well presented! Enables me to remember more interesting facts about Van Gogh than any other presentation! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much, Paul. You do such a marvelous job of filming, staging, characterizing, first person narrating and editing. The insights on the development of his style, The Potato Eaters as compassion for the working poor, and on The Bedroom and the Sunflowers series, together with bringing to life the relationships with his brother Theo and Gaugin helped fill in some blanks for me in a meaningful way that I won't soon forget, if ever. Blessed be.
Wow, thank you! Cheers
I loved this, you did an excellent job expressing Van Gogh. I just found you a few days ago, I am enjoying your channel!

Really pleased you enjoyed it. Cheers
Loved this narrative excerpt. Especially the first person narration. Very touching...I'm an artist too so I know what it is too feel alone. I salute the benevolence of his lovingly supporting brother Theo.
Yes, I'm not sure how long he would have survived without his brother, Theo.
Why do I relate so much to him? If only I had a Theo...
I bet a lot of people do
Fantastic work sir! Thank you for all the time and effort you you put in this. Such an easy and informative also enjoyable way of presenting a biography. Subscribed.

This video shows the messages that a true art conveys and it’s not everybody that can decipher art, only trues artists can decipher art the way you do :)
Thank you very much. Cheers

I love this video it bring me tears each time I see it, but it gives me inspiration to paint, as I am a self taught artist. I did not know Vincent van Gogh, until I started painting four years ago, when I first painted the Sunflower and I got some nice comments like 'van Gogh' I then started reading his life story. Thank you.
You can do it! Cheers
Beautiful video. You bring history to life. You open up a world many would otherwise never know by your interesting presentations of these great artists.
Wow, thank you. Cheers

This is so Awesome! Thank you so much for this wonderful video. 🙌🙌🙌

Artist in School ✌✌✌
I hope he’s in heaven, he deserves it! ❤️ Theo does too! One important part you left out. His desire to serve Christ and ministry to the miners in Belgium. ❤️ thank you for the video I enjoyed it. I’m 60 yrs old. ❤️
I did actually mention he preached in Belgium and tried to become a preacher before he took up painting full time
❤️
No, you portrayed him as a failure as a minister and he was a smashing success as a minister, his parishioners and Jesus would agree. It was only the ministers who considered him a "failure", a failure as an aloof stuffed shirt who pontificafed from on high - he failed outright at that.
Thanks a lot for the great movie and your online lessons

I appreciate all your hard work on these videos and I've watched them all. Thank you for the lovely and very detailed accounts of these artists lives. My husband and I enjoy how you dress up to emulate each artists time period it's so delightful. 💖
Wow, many thanks for your donation, much appreciated. Really pleased you enjoy my videos. Cheers
Absolutely excellent. I’ve watched a number of movies and documentaries about Vincent. IMO, this is one of the best despite being brief. Such feeling in the acting. Believable! You portrayed his psychological turmoil with accuracy; yet, you remained respectful. Well done showing his actual works. Including Theo in the story was important, especially conveying his generous and compassionate nature. I lived in Provence and visited many of the places in your video. I’ve been to his museum in Amsterdam. Vincent and his paintings appeal to all generations and cultures. Thank you for adding to his fame!
Much appreciate your kind comments. Not sure I'm the 'actor' you describe, but thanks anyway. Cheers
Thank you so much for your videos! They are wonderful!
