- My daughter Abby has come to help and we are out making hay on this hot summer day! We are raking with the horses and I am baling hay. Today we are driving the percheron horses, Ken and Buck.

Hello miss Abbie- I am 80 yrs old , but when I was 14 yrs. old I was doing the same as you, raking with horses .I was working with two Canadian mares and they had so much endurance. I’m 60 and used a rake that had seat on a leaf spring. We would skid longs out of river bottoms in the winter time when the ground was frozen and snow covered.
When I see Abby thanking Buck and Kent it comes to my mind that those guys were really part of the family. I smiled, out of good feeling.

I have stacked many hay bales on a flat rack.
I grew up on a farm in the 60's and 70's and worked as a farmhand for other farmers after leaving home.

Abby is right about bale kickers. I helped Gpa bale hay by driving while he stacked. My Uncle decided to upgrade to a kicker and I was too young to operate it so I turned into a shuttle driver and hay mow stacker. It was just as much work as stacking only reversed, if that makes sense. Thanks for sharing.

It sure reminds me of growing up in Michigan's UP in the thirties. I think only one family in our church community (CRC in Rudyard) had a tractor and I watched a lot of hay making and I was just a little kid but I did love farming. And I love your blogs, all of them. They are wonderful!

Good job Jim!! You fortunate to have your daughter to come and help you with the haying. By the looks of your pretty blue sky, you’re in luck.
Your daughter mentioned baling with the horses but I’m sure by using a Baler with a kicker, pulling a wagon you’d have to use 4 horses. Dropping the bales on the ground with an engine driven baler, you could get by with 2 horses on your level ground. What’s your opinion? I suppose your break downs on the Baler had something to do with the knotters, a typical problem and can at times make a person frustrated until you can diagnose the problem. It’s not easy to see what’s going on at the end of the Baler sitting on the seat of the tractor. I’m sure since you’ve been at this for years you can pretty much guess what the problem is. It sure helps if you can have someone drive while you walk along side and see what’s happening.

yes, we had knotter problems,but we got it going.Years ago we did some baling with the horses with a wagon behind, just two horses.
Ms. Abby, you certainly are one lucky young lady having a dad that lets you rake the hay. Only second to being allowed to lick the spoon before washing the dishes, once cakes are in the oven.

I absolutely loved this video. Jim you know you are lucky to have such beautiful intelligent and skilled daughters. They are a credit to you and your wife. It took you all a lot of hard work over the years to get where you are.
It is easy for us all to watch you working but I can tell it must be a lot of constant stress to keep up with all the tasks you need to accomplish every day. There can’t be too many days where you can just goof off. I have just started watching your channel so I am not clued into everything yet.
Please be patient in building your subscribers and I hope this becomes a good supplemental income for your farm

As a 5 year old I spent my summers from that age on at my grand father’s small farm in Ireland. The man was born in 1886 and never drove a motorized vehicle. Even when I was with him in the 1960’s he had a donkey and cart. It’s was a big deal for us when we got to go to town shopping on the donkey and cart. My mom used to tell stories about my grand father plowing in the fields with a team of horses.
It was a very tough life back in my grand fathers time without electricity or running water. I definitely understand the work involved even with the modern conveniences you have mixed in with your current methods.

That rake looks like the one I use to use back in 1969-1970 , I was 14-15 ,I used a super H farmall , there was horse equipment in one of the barns , there was a Studebaker wagon that looked brand new , but every piece of equipment on that farm was well maintained, the stuff in that barn was the farmer’s dads

One of the most rewarding events in the farm year is to get good hay in! You are a big step ahead of me, we haven't even cut any hay yet, each time we plan it, the weather forecast calls for thunderstorms. This year the hay is really thick with lots of red clover, so I can't risk it getting rained on. Very nice big hay field, all flat and with lots of head land to turn around on.

In a way, I need rain desperately, we are about 3 inches behind and the vegetables are thirsty, especially my potatoes and beets, but when it rains it's not enough for those, just enough to spoil the hay. So I am torn... I really like your flat stretched out hayfield; ours is between fences and it's always a bit cramped to get the windrows nice enough at the end for the baler. As long as I got it in loose, that wasn't a problem

Hi Jim I wanted to show my appreciation for the nice work u do and those horses looking very strong and healthy u got some nice fields there lovely but I was wondering why I don't plant luceren in those fields so u may harvest 3 or 4 times it would be so much more hay from the same land maybe sell it or whatever???? jim i gotta question for you originally i come from lower Michigan we had ponys and- horses i am 70 years old but don't remember- when it gets cold outside what do you use to keep the horses warm enough to work or what?
They just naturally grow longer hair and that keeps them warm

This is Brenda, Jim's wife. Jim is very careful to make sure that the horses get all the water they need. It is super important to him that they are well taken care of.

I love this channel. Jim and family make it look “easy.” I have two little girls. I hope one day, if even sporadic, I get a little help. There’s this notion that girls/women aren’t cool or feminine because they farm or live on a farm.
