The new 6.2 has DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) lifters. They are controlled by the VLOM (valve lifter oil manifold). The old AFM system allowed the vehicle to switch from v8 to v4 mode when proper conditions allowed it to do so. The new DFM system allows the vehicle to operate with whatever combination the ECM deems most efficient and necessary. Whether thats V8, V7, V6.. all the way down to 1 cylinder firing. The issue with these systems, new and old, is that GM is sourcing very cheap components to facilitate the operation of these very complex and advanced systems. I'm surprised there has not been a lawsuit filed.

Dod/afm has been an issue since they introduced it and still to this day. They had a huge lawsuit against them over it and somehow won even though it’s such a massive common issue.

It just happened to me when I was exiting off an interstate coasting down hill, maybe 35mph. Left me stranded too, couldn't even put it in neutral to move out of traffic. Towed to dealer and was told engine needs replaced. Blamed me for following manufacturer recommended service program. I was told I need to service it every 5k miles not the 7.5k MyChevy App, the dealer and chevy says. So a little dirty oil locked up the motor? Head mechanic said not to worry, his mechanic takes care of this all the time. Why didn't the sales person tell me that?
I just rolled 20k miles on my 10 month old 2023 Silverado zr2. Should've gotten the Toyota or Ford. I'm not feeling confident about this $70k+ chevy truck. My first chevy truck. Ugh, should've listened to friends and avoided GM.

Had second service done at 10,000 miles at dealership and at 10,300 it dropped a lifted. Still would start and run but missed a lot. There is a class action suit over the afm/dod issues on GM trucks. Most of the issues are with the 6.2L but the 5.3L has had issues as well. The newer AFM system seems to be more troublesome the the older DOD system.
RAM runs a very similar system on their trucks also with most problems with the 5.7L hemi. The TRX doesn't use the system.

We had a 17 Silverado 5.3L with around 100,000km (62,000mi) and coming home one day the engine light started flashing so we pull over, turned it off the on again, code went away, normal operation so we got it to the Chevy dealer and when this happened we had it 8 months...so we got it looked at and it was saying multiple cylinder misfire, ALL the tests they did came back normal, so had to fork out 700 bucks for that, 3 weeks later...same issue!!!!! So I got it towed to another dealer and this time it was saying that the multiple cylinder misfire was double from before so they did more testing and....yet again another 500 bucks for nothing...so we had the truck for just under 2 years and traded it for a 21 Classic Ram 5.7 brand new and got 5k more than what we paid for the Silverado

It’s most likely the AFM system (Active Fuel Management) the lifters in the cylinders that shut off while cruising may not have good oil flow, ultimately causing their downfall quite literally. They collapse and get stuck in off position and it puts the engine in limp mode after the computer registers a misfire. Sadly this has been happening for almost 15 years I think since they released these motors.

  • @TheWolfMatt
    @TheWolfMatt 2 роки тому +1

Dang, that really sucks bud. It's most likely the AFM system malfunctioning, that's pretty common on the 6.2L so I'd expect a couple of lifters be replaced along with a rocker or two. Might also have them look into the fuel injectors, those have also shown to be problematic in these engines.
Best of luck to ya bud. Hope to see the ZR2 back on the channel soon.

Frustrating, to say the least. I had a similar experience - I bought a new Ford F-150 with the V-6 Ecoboost engine a few years ago. Under 20k miles, the engine started billowing thick, white/blueish smoke from the tailpipe, accompanied by a metal on metal grinding sound in the engine when I accelerated. Read online that many were seeing the same issues. I didn't even try to resolve or investigate further, I took it straight to the dealer and traded it for a Toyota. I'd driven Toyotas my entire life, had decided to try one of these F-150's I'd heard so much about over the years because the mpg on the Ford ecoboost was so much better than Tundra. And the thing was a piece of junk. It's ridiculous to spend that much money on a vehicle and have problems right out the gate. The Tundra is awful on mpg, and the Tacoma is a bit small, but they just run. Chevy, Ford, GMC, all have some good looking trucks but I don't trust them to make a reliable product.

My 2021 high country 6.2L just got out of the dealer for the lifter issue as well it did it at 28k miles. Gm warrantied the work replaced 8 lifters bank 1. Got truck back runs and sounds normal again idk if I’m going to keep it now probably get rid of it before bumper to bumper is up. Been gm all my life now thinking about a f250 diesel or maybe a 5.0 f150 definitely not a v6 just can’t accept that sound coming from a full size truck lol

RIP! IF you decide to keep it, best upgrade before adding a blower, is to delete the AFM lifters. There's a kit, which I dealt with the older version when I had an 09 G8 GT..
Kia does the same thing as far as waiting till the car is fully broke before fixing it. I had a 12' Optima which was known for engine problems so Kia extended the warranty for the engine. Did all the recalls, which showed the engine had problems, they wouldn't do anything, then on the hottest freakin summer day on the way to work... My engine blew leaving me on the side of the road for damn near 5hrs!! Kia did put me in a rental and put a new long block in, but a shame they wait till the engine blows.
Chevy should fix it without any issue, especially since this is a well known problem. Interested to see what the actual issue is and what Chevy does..

I love the look of Chevy trucks. I just can't get passed the lack of quality in modern GM vehicles. I know soooo many people with Chevy Trucks and many with Cadillacs that have all sorts of problems. I went with a 2021 Tundra TRD Pro. It doesn't have the tech you'd like to see but I have yet to have a single issue with it.

I have the same dash. Different engine. However my truck wouldn’t start and I have only owned for about 4 months. I couldn’t turn marker lights off. And the heater fan wouldn’t turn off. Towed to Chevy dealership and they ended up saying lights were left on, that’s bull. Also my radio doesn’t work properly and they won’t fix unless I can prove it. The radio works fine then all of a sudden it sounds like blown speakers. This happens periodically. They won’t even look at it.

I'm not a chevy guy, but people talk shit about ford all the time. I've NEVER been left on the side of the road in my car. Now it doesn't have A/C right now because the compressor won't... well.. compress air, but it's still going, and the only thing's i've replaced on it before 100k were the alternator and water pump. things that commonly go out on all cars.
A/C Compressors are common to go out as well, but that's all cars as well.
I would hope they warranty the engine because it's clearly a warranty issue, maybe the computer, maybe a chewed wire somewhere, who knows until it's diagnosed.
Hopefully it's not too bad and it can be brought back asap.
It would be neat to see a supercharged truck since chevy is very unlikely to even do one... they'd have to maybe put the ZL1 supercharger on the truck I think (still same engine... should fit right?!).
Anyway, I would maybe look for an older chevy truck to beat on, I think lots of people enjoy those kinds of projects too.

The new 5.3 and 6.2 with AFM and or DOD have major issues. I’m a huge GM guy, but I’ll never own an AFM or DOD vehicle. I actually just traded my AFM 5.3 for a GMC 2500HD 6.0 gasser… no cylinder deactivation and a proven GM motor 🇺🇸
