Another option is Sierra trading post. It’s basically the tj maxx for sporting goods. I’ve gotten sea to summit items as well as my ultra light thermarest sleep pad as well as my tent and one of my sleeping bags. You have to keep you eyes open but they usually carry better quality items. They have a website as well as stores. My thermarest pad was $75. Brand new

In fact you inspired me to troll their clearance rack. No real backpacking stuff that I might need was there except a deal on a backpacker pantry meal but I found a bunch of other stuff that I needed for home and work. In fact a few months ago I got a steal on some Stanley thermos items that I bring to work all the time. I did get my backpacking tent off Ali Express a few years back. Sometimes you can find good stuff there but like eBay, buyer beware.

Thrifting/Consignment: Location matters a lot. The outdoor used stores in my area are generally not the best quality and are quite expensive. 2 hours east into the mountains and the gear is cheaper, newer, in better condition and there's more selection. Make a day trip to outdoor hub cities and you'll get much, much better deals.

Great point about using PayPal‘s goods and services - if the seller does not accept this do not buy the item. Also use your credit card with PayPal not your bank account. It’s your only protection.

I've used the Backpacking Gear and Flea Market on FB, and it's a great resource. I've gotten a couple of tents, a backpack, a sleeping pad, and a cookset. Same for REI's returns section. Found a REI Basecamp 4 that was discounted $100, because it was returned for being "too heavy for backpacking". It's a 16 pound tent. I have questions for the original buyer. Same for a North Face Wawona 6. Less than $300 for a $500 family sized tent returned because it was missing an interior hanging loop.

Every time I go to rei they have nothing in stock their websites say they have, done with that place, been fooled the last three times, I even called last time! Tired of driving a 30 mile round trip only to be told they don't have something, way to save the planet guys and the employees are useless, not even an "I'm sorry". I got a "yeah, that happens a lot" and then the idiot walks away. Most of the time I get a "we can order it for you". Yeah, so can I but it will definitely not be from rei. Why would I drive 30 miles to order something? You tell me it's in stock, that's why I got in my frickin' car and drove there, if I wanted to order it I would have stayed home! And take off your stupid freakin' masks already!

I got a Thermarest Neoair Xlite NXT in wide for $20 at my local REI. Just had a tiny leak that was an easy fix. Pretty sure I could have sent it to Thermarest and they would have fixed it as well. They also had a Xtherm in wide for $20 with a leak but I left that for someone else 🙂

Great stuff. I bookmarked REI's used shoes for brands I'm interested in. I picked up used Lone Peaks a while back in Excellent condition and they were basically brand new.
Used Amazon items like trekking poles can be brand new in the package.
Probably the best deals were from 2nd hand benefit shops/Thrift stores. I found a lot of nice synthetic layers.
NatureHike's US site has deals often. I picked up a Mongar 2 for around $85-90.
Hammock Gear has 30% off sales from time to time that are worth waiting for.
It's worth signing up for mailing lists of brands you're interested in. Sometimes there will be closeout sales of previous year's inventory.

Great advice for buying gear. Apart from my cook pot and boots/shoes, everything I have is 2nd hand. Where I live we're allowed to take items from the dump (everything is sorted and neat there) and I've found some nice gear there too. Dumpster diving is also an option if you're not squeamish.

Great video Devin! The REI garage sale definitely can be hit or miss but when it’s a hit it can be a home run! I’ve only had luck with thrifted clothing where I’ve gotten unbelievable clothing at basically nothing. Near me EMS (eastern mountain sports) sells (or used to) used rental gear that I’ve gotten good deals from. The FB flea market is ok. I’ve gotten solid stuff from time to time but I’ve had less luck selling on it. eBay is hit or miss, FB marketplace is a pain 😂

Love the REI Garage Sales. I have picked up a down vest that "was too feathery" An Arterx jacket whose color attracted flies "Black", and a new hat that "sat crooked". All brand of those were brand new. I picked up a REI Half dome tent that was 70% off with tags attached and a set of ground hog stakes that had dirt on them, so I assume they were used when the tent was set up just once. As you can see, reading the tags is worth the trip.

Definitely some good advice on finding better deals. Typically thrift stores won't have backpacking gear, but I have found plenty of camp chairs, coolers, camp stoves for car camping there. If you have kids thrift stores are the best places to get layering pieces like fleece for them. I hope you found a tent at the REI Garage sale, your tent shelf behind you is looking kind of bare....LOL

      Yeah in person is smart.
There’s other good ways if you’re shipping items, like asking the person to text you after corresponding in messenger, ask them to text you images or video of the item with the current date and time, etc.
