A lot of younger kids wont get a lot of the references in the video as it was a different time period. The guy that was trying to stop Run-DMC from entering the RnR Hall of Fame was a regular character on the Late Show with David Letterman. (Can't remember his name offhand but he was a regular) David Letterman was a New Yorker and supported Run-DMC so when they made the video, they used the actor to play the front door clerk/guard in the intro. He was supposed to represent MTV when they weren't open to playing black music videos. Rap was not considered Rock N Roll or even “legit” fully then. Run Dmc was the first to blend rock with hip hop. That wasn’t a race thing. It was a musical legitimacy thing.
The artist generally were better because there were so many hoops and hurdles. Most of the time you were pretty polished entertaining live before you got near a studio much less put out a record.
The track was made from Rock music because they were TRYING to cross over! Remember...at this time they didn't play ANY hip hop on the radio. This was their attempt to get play on MTV, which worked. They were the first Rap group on the Rock and roll music station!

The thing is, back in the day, you mostly had to have talent in the music industry to have success. There wasn't too many gimmick acts back in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's.
