Well in Lithuania we have Grim Reaper as Giltinė. "The list of Lithuanian gods is reconstructed based on scarce written sources and late folklore. Giltinė - goddess of death, also The Reaper. Other names include Kaulinyčia, Maras (black death or the Plague), Maro mergos, Kolera, Pavietrė, Kapinių žmogus. Her sacred bird is the owl. Sometimes she was considered to be a sister of Laima (luck)."

Eight years ago I was riding my bike around my driveway. It was in the late afternoon and I stopped and stood staring at the road for some reason. I really can't remember why. All I can remember is seeing a figure. It had no legs to be seen and floated, wearing a white cloak and it's skeletal hands outstretched with chains hanging from its wrists. It flew by so quickly I almost couldn't register what it was. I tried, really tried, to come up with some explanation for what it could have been but settled on it being supernatural. So i brought it up with my mom and not two days before I saw the figure flying down the hill.. a neighbor at the bottom of the hill had died! I'm now absolutely convinced I saw death that day. I wasn't afraid and I'm still not. Spooky as he sounds.. I felt at ease as he was near. I don't think it was a mistake on deaths part, I think he meant for me to see him that day and for that I call him my friend. /HE/ won't kill me. Time will. But if I was correct in who I saw, I'll greet him like a good friend when I'm dead. I don't fear death, I never have. Dying maybe but never death itself nor the angel. He's kind enough to escort me to where I belong where he could so easily leave me by myself. I'm thankful to him already and I won't be dying any time soon... I hope lol. I've unfortunately seen a lot of things related to death, even a few close calls myself. Seeing him once is a coincidence. Running into him several times, now THAT isn't a coincidence. Oh and no... I'm not Christian lol 🖤☠🥀⚰
I remember a true account of someone visiting a dying relative in hospital where while they were sitting consoling quietly an apparition appeared above the dying person which was both hideous but told the visitor not to be afraid and then it was seen to be virtually exactly the same as these tales of what the reaper is supposed to look like -minus the hourglass and sickle.
I had a weird dream when i had to go to the ICU because i had a heart attack from low blood sugar, the Grim Reaper pat my head and we had wine together while we played Call of Duty. He literally just woke me up standing beside my bed and asked if we could hang out. He took me to a part of my room that didn't existed, it had a console i never saw, he was weirdly eating apples and coins but hey he was good teammate and we won like...most of our rounds. 10/10 he chill as fuck
FYI The Bible is full of symbolism. Many story’s and other representations holding messages will come up a lot. This is one thing for people not knowing get really confused by.
interesting, I was wondering about this a few weeks ago. It might me interesting to look at other depictions of death (and/or afterlife) throughout history. As you said in the video after the black plague depictions became more gruesome and frightening.
My favorite depiction of Death is the Irish myth of the Dullahan. A fearie of death that Carrie’s it’s head by its side riding a two wheeled carriage pulled by a headless horse and a scythe as it’s primary weapon. Whom visits the people of Ireland before they die, and if you stumble upon her path she drenches you in blood. It’s probably where they myth of the the headless horseman comes from but I’m not too sure.
Is the Grim Reaper god? He comes off as a mythological farmer. One who reaps death which comes from the seed of life. He's got a skeleton too and god supposedly made people in his image. Probably not but, thought it was kind of interesting how the representation of death just turns out to be some moving bones.
most representations of death/gods of death/afterlife, predate christianity by a long time :/ I should add, that mostof the religions known of nowdays are quite new in a historical sence

This is a new channel and It seem really interesting
When the Reaper shows up, it's with a scythe of relief
Ooh we got a pun!
I love this explanation about Death's origin! You have a very calming voice and go into much detail!
I'd like to hear some African examples. Maybe from the Ashanti or Zimbabwean mythology since you touched on Native American examples.

i like to think of the grim reaper as more of a kind, warm-hearted janitor, who stalks the hallways of life, bringing the withered and misfortunate to a warm place beyond their suffering.
hochelaga , great video, as usual, but something you ought to be aware of:
At 1:26 , you made the classic westerner's faux pas of calling something "Chinese" when it's actually _Tibetan._ The distinction may not matter to most westerners but to Tibetans it's an extremely sore spot and something you ought to know about if you're making informative videos.
Thank you for letting me know. My apologies. Hopefully people will see this comment for this important clarification. :)

In Chinese culture, there is King Yan, who is the equivalent to Hades. The equivalent to the collector of souls is Ox head and horse face, who bring the souls to the underworld.
He is a decent, chill deity who's been doing his work in a respectful attitude.
Maybe but when he comes for you he comes for you to take you where your sins have done or you can say the bad karmic you have put out
Your content and style make for great videos! Thank you.
It is not the grim reaper that is scary, its the little amount of time we have before we see it.
Your content is incredible, keep up this amazing work.
The grim reaper is actually Satan as stated in Hebrews 2:14 Because God's children are human beings--made of flesh and blood--the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.
@@EVsSuck777 oh well I was talking about the grim reaper as symbolism for death, and that we should spend the time before death wisely.

The grim reaper kept me from getting runover by a selfish gluttoned driver in a gas station by touching my shoulder. I felt the cold waft of air and I about seen my demise.

For the longest time I legit thought magere hein (Translated: meager hein), was just the name of the grim reaper. Wow how my eyes have opened.
Its grim reaper in Dutch (i live in the Netherlands)
@@fryderykchopin3974 I mean the dutch borrow so many English words that this wouldn't be the first thing having 2 words. Especially not considering the media the grim reaper is actually used in. The grim reaper is a historical fiction tale after all, always has been always will. Actually grim reaper doesnt work with dutch grammar now i think about it so it had to have been a borrowed word. (Ik leef ook in Nederland XD)
In case you didnt know:
'Magere Hein' essentially means **thin >insert common name from a few centuries ago

There was a Death Row inmate who actually said something similar. His final words before execution were

If the Grim reaper doesn't have a jamaican accent, i ain't dying.

Fun fact: in Danish the grim reaper is called "manden med leen" which directly translates to "the man with the scythe"
We definitely wouldn't want to see him but I think we will have to. He reaps what was sown.
Death is not what is scary, it’s time.
Pretty cool vid. thanks for posting.
You Sir have earned a new Sub. Outstanding job!

3:09 excuse me what? The be-ENDERMAN?!?!!
i mean it kinda fits ngl
*enderman knocks you into the void*
its supposed to be something like bay-nderman and the A as in British ''master''
Father Time in Rudolph has a scythe, so I always assumed he was the depiction of death in a less negative sense.
Another fantastic video - thank you so much 😊
Few people know just how kind and caring He is.
Is the Grim Reaper god? He comes off as a mythological farmer. One who reaps death which comes from the seed of life. He's got a skeleton too and god supposedly made people in his image. Probably not but, thought it was kind of interesting how the representation of death just turns out to be some moving bones.
I doubt it since the bible specifically mentions an "angel of death".
he is probably not god
Why not Gods don't create only. Some create and others take I feel that they are both gods
most representations of death/gods of death/afterlife, predate christianity by a long time :/
I should add, that mostof the religions known of nowdays are quite new in a historical sence
Nah man im not God
I just love how he pronounces “Magere Hein”
