    Thank you. That was interesting and fun. There's something about Joel's childlike wonder that gets you engaged in these videos. You can't help but feel the emotions he's exuding.

    Now, we want this filament making machine at home :)

    • @SlEasyTarget
      @SlEasyTarget 6 років тому +3

      It's been tried, but there is quite a bit more to it than just a glorified meat-grinder-with-heater, the machine is the easy bit, stringing out the extrude to the right size , then the cooling and winding take a lot of space and need constant/correct conditions.. I'm sure a practical home machine is possible but nobody has really hit the mark yet.

    • @makmuffin5009
      @makmuffin5009 6 років тому +1

      Not really, if you search for the Lyman Filament extruder, you see, there are People who has created functionating machines.
      A friend of mine has rebuild the Design of Lyman, which works perfecctly, it's one of the best filaments i've ever used.
      We both work in an profile extrusion so we get the pellets really easy.

    • @3DWithUs
      @3DWithUs 6 років тому

      No problem, we will wait patiently :) Maybe one day there will be a microwave size (well fridge size will work too) machine.

    • @3DWithUs
      @3DWithUs 6 років тому +1

      Does it work with recycled/shredded plastic? like failed prints for example?

    • @makmuffin5009
      @makmuffin5009 6 років тому +1

      Yeah it should work, but first you'll need to find a way to shred it.
      But the plastic degrades, the more often it is heated.
      So the quality will drop of your plastic and filament.
      If you are trying to extrude ABS Filament or PA, PC etc. you will first need to dry it otherwise you'll get bubbles in your fiament

    This is exactly the kind of "hand dyed" look I'd love to be able to get in a filament. It really makes my knitters heart sing! I can't wait to see it printed.

    I'd love to learn more about the process, heating, mixing... what's happening between the insertion of the pallets and the filament extrusion ;)
    Thanks Joël, your doing great as a full time content creator !

    •  6 років тому +1

      I rather these short videos than the 1hour live where you don't get as much informations.
      Under 10', for me, is a good format.
      Content is important, if I want to loose my time I've got plenty of junk on tv ...
      Anyway, I really enjoyed this video regardless to the length...
      As always, quality is better than quantity ;)

    I hope they start doing filament for the masterspool system. I love seeing Proto Pasta, especially since it's fairly local here in the PNW. I'd love to get a custom color from them.

  • @GothBoyUK
    @GothBoyUK 6 років тому

    I've seen a few suppliers offering 'rainbow' filaments but they tend to be expensive or in ABS (boo hiss). I could forsee a HUGE market for the correct colour combinations that have smooth transitions. Being a qualified Interior Designer I understand a bit about how colours work & often, when I'm printing, I look at something & can see how a particular finish &/or colour combination could have improved it greatly. Having access to Proto-Pasta is excellent, I wish I could make my own mixes!

    It is incredible how little you need to color filament. I was able to see the process at a local 3d filament maker and I was a bit confused since the abs in the hopper was white but black was coming out.

      I'm sadly not going to be able to jump into 3d printing for quite some time. Money is currently locked up for me. With me going into college next year I need to save what I can to pay for it. 3D printing looks amazing to me and that you can mix a color is awesome. I would stick to a fiery sort of color with yellow and red being my HS colors. as well as my favorite colors

    It still amazes me that companies can make a 2lb spool of filament for between $15-$30 (with free shipping). Seems like there's quite a bit of labor setting up the machine.

    • @briancorbino2043
      @briancorbino2043 6 років тому

      Quantity. In any manufacturing environment, setup is the biggest single cost in a job (aside from machinery, obviously). When you're running a million spools of a single color, then your setup/teardown costs are split over a much larger output.
