Karen was a natural singer and drummer. She was devastated when she was pulled from the drums. This was her real passion. More than singing. When they took the drums away from her that’s when she started going down hill. She was very shy and the drums helped her. Her brother was very controlling and she didn’t feel self worth. She died a slow sad life when she starved herself to death. Very sad for a beautiful person with such gifts

Sorry Lynne, I've watched & read a lot about the Carpenters, BUT your comment is way off base & sadly a distortion of what happen.

@@Timmac48 i’ve watched and read a lot about the Carpenters too, and I don’t think it was way off base. She definitely had a strange family situation, with a cold, unloving, triangulating narcissistic mother and a golden-child brother in Richard, who may be an N himself. I appreciate his once-in-a-generation talent, but whenever he’s interviewed and speaks of Karen, something seems a bit ‘off’ to me...

We lost Karen Carpenter way too soon. She died at age 32 of a heart attack in 1983. She suffered from Anorexia which led to her death. The music of Karen Carpenter and her brother Richard will live forever! Rest in peace, Karen.

Karen Carpenter was one of the greatest female vocalist of all times, beautiful amazing voice no auto-tune no back woods tricks just straight up talent. Check out their hit song from 1970 that pretty much started it all for the Carpenters. Check out the song CLOSE TO YOU, find a video on UA-cam that lasts at least up to 3:41, enjoy

It isn't only Karen's beautiful voice but it is also Richard's production of the song. The parts that are moving you and probably giving you the chills is when he dubbed many voices over each other but there is also the instrumentation, the climax and then the calm break, it is really just everything put together perfectly that just makes it a great song.

Ya, Karen and the Carpenters were NO Joke ! The Carpenters were HUGE! They were before my time but timeless / classic ... mom and dad had them playing ALL the time ! They’re as are apart of my childhood as were Halloween and Football! Hearing them both make my heart smile and hurt at the same time , because I had A great childhood( smile ), and hurts cause’ I wish kids could experience that innocence and true talent we had back then. Great reaction ! Best of luck ..Cheers from Texas !

Karen Carpenter had a 3 octave voice, but no matter what pitch or note her voice was on, it was smooth and never strained or forced with appropriate volume for the bands instruments and her words came out clearly and seemed to be personally speaking to the soul of the listener, a rare rare talent. As a child of the 60s myself she is greatly missed. Great reaction Eazzy :)

such an beautifully awesome reaction...when they were kids Richard Carpenter knew something his sister didn't -how amazingly rare her voice was, the fact that she was a world class drummer was just a bonus, I've always felt that the Carpenters music was a beautiful gift from God -after all no matter how many years pass every human that hears it has a positive emotional experience, I mean 500 years from now people will still be people and react in the same manner, like I said -a beautiful gift

Always remember Karen was a drummer first, and a singer second. She won Rock Drummer of the Year in '75 beating out Keith Moon (The Who), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Ringo Starr (The Beatles), and Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix). Karen was one of those rare lead singer/drummers like Phil Collins. A musical skill that very few possess. Listen to her creative fill work on this quiet little number that requires precision timing. Her high hat control is impeccable, as well: ua-cam.com/video/PtptZZOkN5A/v-deo.html
Another song showing her using a distinctive traditional grip (also known as the orthodox grip or conventional grip, and, to a lesser extent, the jazz grip) technique with her drumsticks.

George, yes! Thx for posting those links for ppl to see the intricate aspects of drumming. I was 11-years-old when "Close To You" hit the radio waves and I about fell out in the floor the first time I watched them sing it on TV. That beautiful amazing young woman was playing the drums?! What??? While singing, too?! Like an angel! I don't know that Karen ever realized just how special she truly was, and how many young girls like me she inspired to pick up a pair of sticks and learn to play the drums, too. To this day, soon to be 38 years ago when she laid down on that bedroom floor and passed away, I mourn her passing. She was a gift to the world, truly otherwordly, and her legacy is still changing lives, and saving lives for so many dealing with eating disorders. You are so loved, beautiful Karen. Thank you for your gifts of song and inspiration. And George, thank you for posting those links. You are spot on with her impeccable control on the high-hat. I don't know how she did that and sing, too. Genius level! My favorites of them in concert are the 1974 Budakan, Japan concert especially when she's playing the drums, and the entire 1972 Australian concert. Wow! Wow! Wow! Just stunning to play like she did and sing so beautifully from behind the kit. She is a legend!

@@georgeralph8031 wow! Wonderful! I did not know that. She would love that - maybe. She was apparently quite shy, bashful and unsure of herself. But drumming was her life, her passion, and to have someone like him say that... wow. Same thing with the story of John Lennon of the Beatles running into her one time and telling her what a beautiful voice she had. Legend has it that she had a hard time believing him and felt he was only being nice. Sometimes I think that's what makes her even more special. She was just down-to-earth, shy, and (sadly) quite insecure, apparently never realizing just how amazingly talented she was.

The voice came a little later and with her brother Richard living in L.A. they got a record label and began tailoring the CARPENTERS sound. This is a fairytale that became the CARPENTERS reality. For the next 4 yrs. they worked nonstop creating some timeless tracks and those CHRISTMAS albums which are my personal favorites.
