I know this is a little off topic but I simply can’t understand that there are people that think the process of creating a bitcoin is environmentally friendly. I used to work for a company that has rows and rows of rigs mining bitcoin, and for it to even a get a fragment of a bit coin could take weeks. For it to get that fragment, it takes so much electricity and energy just to do so. Not only that the rigs are super loud and they produce massive amounts of heat, and they have to have dedicated isles to push the heat out of the buildings and push into the environment around them just so the rigs don’t overheat.

Look, I like your content, and I don't think your foray into this space as a Tryhards experiment is inherently without value. It's interesting to see what can be done when the point isn't a cynical pump and dump, even if the end result is just a novel way of validating a paid membership. The fact that an "ethical" NFT pfp collection drop is such a novelty kind of betrays the issue, though.
The reason people are asking if you've watched all of x or y is because they, like myself, find it hard to imagine watching and understanding something like "Line Goes Up" and still having your neutral opinion about NFTs.
You correctly say that any potential utility for artists has been undermined by the entrepreneur crowd. Could the underlying tech have been of some use to bona fide artists? Sure, maybe. With wider adoption it might have been possible. I guess.
Where this framing falls short is it assumes that NFTs were ever intended to serve a utility. They weren't, or at least that was secondary to the grift. They are a post-hoc use case built onto crypto technology because it isn't very good at being currency (its stated primary use case). People who own crypto needed another way to convince "bigger fools" to buy in. Otherwise their money stays tied up in this otherwise not-very-useful asset. NFTs are just a selling point for what essentially functions as a Ponzi scheme.
There could be legitimate use cases for the underlying blockchain technology but for an outsider, nobody who already bought in can be assumed to be an honest actor. They have an interest in convincing you to join them. Whether they're trying to cash out or hodl to the moon, the value of their asset is dependent on people continuing to buy in and drive demand (and also on convincing their peers not to sell, which would increase supply)
TL;DR: Gary Vee isn't the exception in this space. He's the rule. NFTs exist for people like him to make money off rubes. And those rubes need to find bigger rubes to make their money back.

i was just thinking, that a shoutout to top donors in the end of a youtube video would be very non-fungible on its own. as for the art, perhaps artists could just take a special commission from the donors or customers. having it on a blockchain allows for the reciept of the art to change hands, but thats about the only value it provides. in the end, it doesnt seem to justify the use of blockchains, especially considering the environmental impact along with other things.

I gotta say, as a long time nerd city fan, I found this video to be extremely disappointing. Its clearly extremely high effort, and I applaud you for all of the hard work. I just feel like this video is missing alot of things that I love about the Nerd City channel. The ensemble of memorable characters has always been one of the most entertaining parts of previous videos. Seeing Dr. Downvote, the devil, nicki, and other youtubers always adds an extra level of entertainment. Dr D is barely in this video, and theres no one else. I feel as though this is such a missed opportunity. To have more chaotic delivery from Dr D can really emphasis alot of the points youre trying to make in more interesting ways than what is in this video. The various characters really helped separate Nerd City from feeling like any old video essay channel. This video feels closer to standard video essays than what I would expect from Nerd City.
There was also alot of hyper stylized editing done in previous videos that really enhanced the information being communicated. The ending bits of "A parents worst nightmare" and "The worst youtuber of all time" hyper edited commentary from various characters together, and really made the videos feel like they had a satisfying climax. This video doesn't really feel like that. I get a feeling that there is one consistent energy in this video from beginning to end, which can feel boring. In previous videos, there was lots of ebs and flows with different music, editing, characters, or points being made that gave different sections of those videos more weight to them.
Also, titling the video "What Happened to Nerd City?", when the video never addresses this topic, is just terrible clickbait. The title is flat out lie. I find it a bit concerning for you that you have barely uploaded in 3 years, and I really hope the best for your mental health. If you want the reason you've been absent to be private, I totally understand. But, don't lie in the title of your return video, to the 900k people that actually want to support you. This level of clickbait seems like something you would criticize other youtubers for doing.
this video is definitely better than 99% of what's on youtube, but I just feel like it's not up to the Nerd City standard. I'm glad you're back, and I will definitely watch the next video, and I hope you are doing well.

in a later video will dive in, for sure. But there are a lot of reasons! The fees are much lower. There's no monthly rebills (better for supporters). You can trade out of it if you don't want it anymore (better for supporters). There's no censorship worry from Patreon (better for artists). There's no possibility of charging back on last day of month (better for artists). I've witnessed the harshest side of all of those problems. Plus this is more fun, and there are endless world-building options using the trait system. It's worth experimenting with!

That point (36:24) you made about how influencing people to become entrepreneurs on the next big fad being more harmful than good is so important. That's the message that needs to be perpetuated from this point onwards. Sure there were very likely similar people doing the same thing back then, but the internet itself has caused it to become much more wide spread and frankly cancerous to innovation and virgining tech.

    • @DingDingTheYoutubeBuddy

Exactly, being an entrepreneur isn't the issue, you can live a very comfortable life that way if you're good at what you do, just don't go into dumbass bullshit as you said. Open a grocery store, open a repair shop, start a construction business, hell, open a laundromat (maybe not that one) something proven, and something that people actually need and requires skill and knowhow to be able to do or that most people dont want to do. The issue is these people all want "get rich quick with the least amount of effort" when that really doesn't exist, or at least its so rare that the percentage chance when rounded to the nearest ten thousandth is 0, it might as well not exist. People have forgotten that hard work truly does pay off most of the time; you just have to work hard at the right things.

The dude said he did it all for the money, BUT he said, that doesn''t mean that he needs to screw over people or not do nice things. He helps people get their laundry clean, pays entertainers to have special parties for kids and even cooks food. Everything done to make the thing more popular and to make him more money, but at the same time everything also helps the people visiting the laundromat. @andrewevenson2657 Рік тому +1

For those upset/confused about the ending, let me explain (at least how I understand it) cause I do think he missed the mark on the explanation.
If you paid attention to the whole video, this video wasn’t an anti-nft, this was an anti-nft scam video. For those who have forgotten NFT’s, before they were scams, were suppose to be a source of income for talented and underpaid artists. Can you right click and save the image? Sure, and you can also pirate any movie or video game on the internet with literally zero consequence, so why do people bother to pay for games and movies? Out of convenience, or to support the creator. If you don’t have the money to support a good artist, then don’t, that’s okay, but it seems Nerd City is trying to take this NFT project in that direction. Actual art, not randomly generated trash, and unless I misunderstand, you’d have some sort of access to a server to learn something? So it’s providing a tangible service as well as income for actually talented and deserving people.
Now, I’m never gunna buy an NFT, but I don’t think they are inherently bad. I think 99% of them are scams, but there are some actual good purposes out there. The point was made at the beginning that the tulip market crashed and rose from the ashes, and amazon, eBay, and other companies have a similar story. Nerd City is claiming NFT’s are sharing that story. They got inflated, and people were scammed into placing unrealistic values on them, and then it crashes, but there is actually a use for this technology that will rise from the ashes from people who actually care about delivering a good product, and that is what I think Nerd City is trying to do.
If I am wrong, please correct me. Maybe I got some specific stuff wrong because I can’t memorize the entire video, but I think that’s the general gist of it.
