The Battle For Mount Longdon | A Falklands War Special | James O'Connell

- Опубліковано 15 вер 2024
- Under cover of darkness 3 Para began their assault on Mount Longdon in June 1982. The three platoons of B Company each approached the mountain silently, treading carefully through a series of defensive minefields. But following an explosion fighting quickly escalated with shocking speed and severity, resulting in some of the harshest close-hand fighting experienced by British troops since the Korean war.

Great book
Ive put that on the F.B Page Chris, that was Brilliant
@@buchanjay Much appreciated James - thank you! X
Seconded.. Amazing book.
Brilliant book I must have read it 3 or 4 times, much respect to Jimmy and all our service and ex servicemen and women 👍🏻
Thank you lads for this, I’m Argentinian interested in the conflict and this is one of the best story’s of the war that I ever seen. Respects for you both
one of the most tragic things is that Argentinian young Soldiers were forced into a War they didn't want. I'm UK but I also think the young Argentinan Soldiers should be remembered as they were basically Sacrificed for General G ego.and that's not right and they need to be remembered.
Respect to you an Argentinian Tomas lad, from a Scot & the English & Welsh lads 💙🏴🏴🏴🇦🇷 🙏🏻
@@somebawldy3789 What ?
@@somebawldy3789 I know about Paras being disintegrated in dug ditches never to be found.
You my friend are miss informed.
This is unbelievable Thankyou all for your service 3 para i dop my hat to everyone of you brave brave men .Rest in piece to the fallen .❤️❤️❤️
What a story , thank you Mr O'Connel , You made Britain proud .UK veterans are not treated as they should be .
God bless all the young BRITISH men and women who serve and have served !!! An American Veteran.
Hello Chris - keep up the wonderful work that you do for veterans, it is inspiring. I have read a dozen books on the Falkland’s conflict and all of them have left me feeling humbled and very proud of all the warriors. At the start of this podcast, I did for a moment think 'James, go steady on the other books written'. I went and purchased 3 days in June, after reading the introduction which at one point brought tears to my eyes, I now understand what James was saying, he wasn't being dismissive of the other books, this book has the views of 148 veterans from the battle and Argentinian veterans too. I am feeling embarrassed that this wealth of information has only cost me £8.99. I will donate a good sum today to the RBLI...I was 17 year old when the Falklands war started and I was dating a girl who had two brothers in the army on leave from Northern Ireland and to witness their stress and love for their fellow warriors was sad and inspiring in the same moment - I am now engaged to a lady whose brother Mark was on the Coventry when it was sunk, a 19 year old stoker and one of the last survivors off the ship, very sadly PTSD got the better of Mark in 2012 RIP. Regards Phil
Currently reading this gentleman's book, amazing effort to get so many accounts from soldiers on both sides and put together, making a clear picture of how this battle was fought and won. Highlighting the bravery and professionalism of all involved.
Best book about the Falklands there is
Inspirational bloke. Hats off and the greatest respect for the service him and his comrades endured during the falklands.
Kudos to Chris Thrall for documenting these amazing interviews and logging for posterity this important history. I extend my heartfelt respect to Jimmy and all the Falkland's lads. I had an old school mate, Manc lad, who served with 2 para down there. What a time. I shall get Jimmy's book. His honest, heart-wrenching account is astounding. His Scouse humility and humour shines throughout. I found myself crying and laughing sometimes at the same time. It was the kind of laughter that came from hearing his totally human reaction to some of the grimmest moments. His generous accounts of the bravery of his fellow soldiers was inspirational, as was his respect for his former adversaries. One important point he mentions is the consequence of our victory for the Argentines; that was the fall of the military junta that initiated the occupation of the Falklands in the first place. The disintegration of that government in the aftermath of the Argentine defeat saved thousands of lives in that country. This is something the anti-war pundits fail to mention. God Bless Jimmy and all those lads who served and continue to serve in other conflicts. Thanks for your service.
Don’t have the words....mesmerised.Most of my training team were down south and said nothing went right.what a podcast
respect lads ,,, ive served 2 tours of the falklands so very long after the conflict but it did bring a tear to my eye to see the battlefield tours ,, respect to all that served there
rations troop first tour in 98 and then supply in 2000,,, met some dam good freinds there even though some where raf ,,,,, ill never forget the naafi bop on thursday nights
RESPECT to the fallen of both sides. They will never be forgotten. HONOR AL VALOR EN COMBATE - VIVA LA PATRIA
Great interview. I will definitely buy Jimmy's book. A friend of mine was in the Falklands in 1982 with the Engineers. He sadly died of cancer in 2015. He told me that the cold at night was unbearable just like Jimmy mentioned. Respects to Jimmy for the courage he has shown to recover from his injuries, and also to all who were wounded and who lost their lives. I heard the story of Stewart McLaughlin many years ago and hope he gets his VC one day.
I feel that the class system is still very prevalent in military honours. If you read John Geddes' book he has a certain view of the leadership of H. Jones. He also refers to the unequivocal bravery of Dave Abols. The evidence of Stewart McLaughlin's bravery is without question. However the latter were not recognised as they should have been. Wrong school tie.
@@McElhinney65 In all the articles I've read about Stewart McLaughlin, every single soldier who was in contact with him during the battle for Longdon say the same thing. To a man they speak of his unparalleled courage. It wasn't just one act of bravery, it was multiple acts from the beginning of the battle right to his death. My experience is that when multiple people say the same thing it's usually true. I also read that Scouse was known to be a bit insubordinate. I just hope that this didn't stop a very brave man from getting the VC he clearly deserved.
I didn't have time to watch this, but I could not leave it. These people are just incredible. James is a scouser, and I think Liverpool people are something special. I remember from seagoing days, being very impressed by the people in Liverpool. need to buy his book. Thanks for this video !
Wow! that’s without doubt the best podcast I’ve heard in a long while and the most humbling. I’ve read Jimmy’s book and it covers more of that battle than any other on the subject, credit to Jimmy for his hard work covering and researching the book and his humble respect and friendship with the Argentinians that also fought that night. It’s also the only book that mentions the actions of the 148 Commando team that were also on that mountain with B Coy that night and never get a mention anywhere else. When the battle of Longdon was over they immediately joined 2 Para for the attack on Wifeless Ridge. 3 Days in June well worth a read
Just finished the audio book. Outstanding. Massive respect to all the boys involved, especially to the ones who didn't come back.
Riveting podcast, James oozes humanity. Heard 3 days in June was the best falklands book around, I can see why. Best of luck to both of you, great interview
What an absorbing account from a genuine and humble bloke who has gone through so much. Huge respect to those that have and are serving in the British Forces. I can't imagine going through that. Take care and stay strong.
I had the honour of serving with ex Falklands Vets in a Firearms Unit within the Police Force. One was ex 3 Para. Respect.
I'm interviewing a soldier (then) Captain (now) this coming Wednesday for an article on the day he attends the reunion dinner. He was one of these brave lads. I'm in awe and proud to be able to share his experience. I've just purchased the book, and will be spending my weekend reading it. God bless you all.
What can I say Chris, yet another top class interview, with such a remarkable and humble man, hats off to you both
This was fantastic. Edge of the seat stuff that came from the heart with nothing held back, and great to hear from someone who was there, with a few myths hopefully put to bed as well.
Hope Corporal McLaughlin gets the award he so richly deserves one day.
Thanks Jimmy and Chris. All the best.
100 times watching this podcast this man is articulate truthful and tells this story so well thankful to have men like this in 82
Solo puedo decir que a pesar del sentido de pertenencia . En este conflicto hubo honor y respeto de ambos lados. Es lo que merecen los veteranos Respeto . Saludo1
Thanks Chris and James, this interview is absolutely captivating and gave a true picture of the bravery and horrific experience of the Mount Longdon assualt. I'm speechless that nobody would employ this hero after the Falklands campaign. God bless all who served and died. Thanks again Chris and James for bringing these true accounts to the open public. Much love Legends. 👍
Vivid recollections from frontline battle. True Brit Grit. RESPECT!
I am on the last few pages of the book and found it full of emotion. Such an amazing book shown from the perspective of the various soldiers. The paragraph I found the worst was the last one, chapter 8. I say the worst as it is totally focused on all the casualties and brings everything into one chapter. A very emotional read and feel so sad for the paras who died or suffered life changing injuries. We will remember them.
Just finished watching this podcast. So interesting. Thanks for doing this. Total respect.
@@samson40a I am only on the introduction and that brought tears to my eyes
What an absolute pleasure to have watched this. I visites Mt..Longdon in 1998 whilst on tour. We should never forget the sacrafice both physically and mentally these men have given in service to this country. Lest we forget... thanks Chris and Jimmy...
Well done Men, thank you for your service... R.I.P to the ones that didn't come home....
Yes Jimmy wrote a great book on the battle of Mount Longdon. From the first page you’re thrown straight into the thick of it. Also another great book on the battle, Sod That For A Game Of Soldiers by Mark Eyles Thomas.
Got both of those and a few more

3 Days in June, Jaw dropping, brutal, savage and incredibly intense.
Almost overwhelming,
So many heroes.
Without any doubt his book is the best book I have ever read about soldiers and fighting, absolutely outstanding.
I've read Jimmy's book and many more on the Falklands conflict. What a brilliant podcast. It's hard to comprehend what those brave lads went through. Absolute respect ❤
Gripped throughout, Read his first copy and the latest. I know you said glorifying war isn’t great but we need trained people able to do that when needed. Just glad there is more awareness in the forces of mental health issues. Extremely brave !
Chris, James a great insight into the fighting on the Falklands - excellent podcast
You did an outstanding job under the most challenging of conditions. I am glad that you survived to tell your story.
I'm honestly in awe of this guy. Speechless what brilliant craic Chris. 👏👏
Thanks for this Gentleman, very enlightening podcast. I’ve just bought the book and I’ve read a lot of books about the Falklands war and can say hands down that this one is the best account I’ve read. Well done.
Absolutely outstanding Jimmy & Chris!! ‘82 seems like yesterday, where have the years gone? All the best lads.
Another absolutely Stella and mind blowing vid Chris, I have to say I do love these - not only is it an essential not just for historical purposes but that humanisation of war and the reality of it and it’s consequences. But also to show what can be achieved by people when under pressure, regardless of context or situation, for the people around you. Fascinating insight and whilst I’m not sure I could correspond with my old enemy, but it shows the broader character and how the situation translates and transcends. As a kid in the 80’s I just wanted us to kick Argie ass and get our territory back. I was and always have been proud of those whom chose to serve and the commitment they make. I also think that as bad as it was, it was a wake-up call that the MOD needed to recognise that or military needed investment and overhaul. But the simple fact of the matter is that we won because our military was willing to get on with the job, no matter what, through pride and determination and in-spite of command and politics. When you look at the broader planning and logistics, we simply had to complete in a few months because we didn’t have the logistics to extend beyond that. And faced with that (like we still see today) the coal face just has to dig in and carry on.
I have Jimmy's book, a thorough piece of research and scholarship. I'm also lucky enough to know the GPMG gunner in the thumbnail for this video, he was wounded on Longdon.
Greetings from Argentina
This book left me breathless, the intense account is as it was. Thank you for your service to you and those who did not make it home.
Thank you for your services, James

It's the anniversary of that night, 40 years ago and I feel honoured to hear your story, _Jimmy O'Connel_ .
I found it extremely moving, upsetting and horrifying, to hear your account.
No man should have to experience such things and I can't help but think you were all fighting the wrong people - it's the _politicians_ who should be shot!
"No greater love has any man than to give his life for his friend" and it's your comrades really, whom you were fighting for.
Thank you for your service, Sir.

Hello Chris, great video mate, really interesting to about his experiences in the Falklands War, I bought the large paperback book of 3 Days in June from him directly and what a read, many photographs as well, a damn good read I recommend to all military historians , keep safe, all the best, Lee.
Lost for Words Jimmy God Bless you Mate.
Massive respect James and Chris! These accounts are fascinating. Thank you for your service.
Great podcast! I would love to speak to James about the battle. I knew Pvt Richard Absolon's father, John. I met him when I lived in New Zealand, he was obviously very proud of what his son achieved during the battle, Richard died on the 13th June 1982 aged just 19!
I've just bought your book Jimmy, reading one about goose green at the moment then looking forward to reading your book, such brave soldiers, good luck for the rest of your life, honour and respect from a RWF vet.

What a fantastic podcast, I will be watching this. I felt myself welling up and will definitely be buying Jimmy's book. Exceptional interviewing Chris
One of many brave men ....Respect James.
I have Jimmy's book. Incredibly researched, most in-depth description of any battle I've ever read.
I used to bike my kid back from Farnborough Infants and he used to have his after school snacks watching the Paras doing the balloon jumps. He also did the Tarzan assault course when he was five, doing his first regain. He used to on the Basingstoke Canal the shuffle test, I was a runner and he rode his bike and I had to stop, he waited his turn and the Paras stepped aside for this little kid. I just gave the instructor the OK. Now almost 18 years service as a RM Cdo PTI. Always destined to be in the military; Aldershot is missing the Paras very much. I love hearing the true stories from wonderful people everyone I value
Are you related? Who is Mairi? Sorry brother - I'm interested but confused! 👊
I had the privilege of walking the West Highland Way with Terry McGlasson for HRH 12 years ago, in appalling conditions. We climbed Ben Nevis on the last day. It was an honour to have him with us. I'll leave it there.

Absolutely fascinating interview..Such incredible bravery, there`s no words that can express it.A friend of mine who eventually became a postman, was a WO in the Army and went down to the Falklands after the war and was involved in the work surrounding dealing with all the dead bodies of both British and Argentinian forces. He actually i believe got the BEM for this work...Just terrible that the Cpl never got his medal and so terribly sad the way his life ended...So interesting....From start to finish.....

Chat to Jimmy on twitter now and again a nice bloke. First time I've heard him speak😂. Three days in June's a great book. Great interview guys.
So humbling, two of the Paras that died on mount Longdon were only 17! Seventeen FFS, it’s unbelievable isn’t it, I’m an ex Bootie and I joined up in 79 at 16 ,you look at a lot of the youth today and it’s hard to believe that those two kids (and that’s what they Were )did that, they must have been wondering what the hell was going on, they truly are hero’s respect to them all. Today’s society would cast doubt on what those warriors did. RESPECT. I totally agree with Jimmy about the thoughts of the boys growing up in the 70s, plenty of my mates at school joined the Marines and other forces.
Most of the argentinean conscripts soldiers who died in Longdon were 18. War is hell
Great podcast. I agree with what Jimmy said at the end, that we need these long podcasts to get into detail. I shall order the book. Thanks, and take care
A riveting story. I watched and listened to every second. Respect to Jimmy. Very interesting that he corresponds with Argentinian soldiers who were his enemy that night. I would love to hear their account of their time on the islands.

Well this was truly fascinating and very moving. It really does give an incite into the untold events in Falklands
Thank you
Excellent podcast, thanks fella's.
I lived in the Falklands as a kid in the late 80’s, 6 years after the war, and just behind our house (on Jeremy Moore Avenue) was Mt Tumbledown. My brother and I would wander around all the sites and collect bullet cases, mess tins, jackets in peat bogs- we found a lot of live ammunition and had to hand it in to the EOD. It’s cool as a kid, but as an adult the sheer number of bullet cases was staggering, you’d feel them under your feet. The air must have been thick with bullets. It’s very sobering to hear the stories of people who fought there
Thanks so much Jimmy most respect as always!
