It's a beautiful song...hard to believe that it had to have been written by a 17 or 18 year old kid. The entire album is full of this old soul wisdom and sprinkled with the wide eyed innocence of youth
This song describes very well a thought I had when I was sick of depression and used to felt a deep empty in my life. Thank god these days are gone for now.
wow, they are soo young in this video. Mental Jewelry is an album I am so happy I own on vinyl LP and CD. Live are part of the soundtrack to my life.. grown up listening to their music.
Awesome! I saw them last week in Orlando, they performed this one! Something about it just gives me chills! Just as good now as it was back then! Thanks for adding!!
Let's go FIX THIS loving thing! I know that I should think about giving And think about helping out And think about, think about living But I, I, I can't seem to rescue myself I know that I should think about giving And think about helping out And think about, think about living But I, I, I can't seem to rescue myself What about my bank account and my holy desert shield That keep me dry under the arms? Flags and mental jewelry's all I know And they keep me happy and warm inside So I said unto this man "Who are you and where do you come from?" And he proceeded to tell me Many, many, many, many, many, many, many things, yea But I said nothing at all For the flowers in the corner, by the room In the window, and the sun Said it all What about my bank account and my holy desert shield That keep me dry under the arms? Flags and mental jewelry's all I know And they keep me happy and warm inside At least they said they would Said they could Mama said they would Do me good I know that I should think about giving And think about helping out And think about, think about living But I, I, I can't seem to rescue myself
Damn! Look at the kids! What a great vid thanks for sharing. I feel like Ive been right there with them as the grew up. Hope they're all happy in their new lives.
wow... just wow.. i feel yeah i feel old.. this is great i missed all this late night stuff back in the day cause i was to young to stay up that late lol.
First song I ever heard from them and I was kinda wowed, cuz they were local boys for me. It's not everyday that great rock musicians rise from the dust of the amish farmlands. I also got see Kowalczyk throw a punch with intent at the sound guy after a concert at Rosemont college in 93. That woulda landed too but the drummer caught him and he whiffed by what looked to be about 1/2 an inch.
The lyrics of this song are just as applicable today as when they were written, 20 years ago. It is a searing indictment of the average citizen's preoccupation with materialism, empty slogans and signs of patriotism, and our glorification of war. All you have to do is change the term "holy Desert Shield" to "holy War on Terror" and it was like that song was written for today. This song was a true masterpiece precisely because it told us to wake up! Apparently, we are still in a slumber.
in MTV Brazil i used to be watch a video of this song which is placed in a show put up by a radio station...the band plays better than in this one...anyone has that video?? na mtv brasil eu costumava a ver o video dessa música q era diferente...a banda tocava ela com mais alma...era tipo um show q uma radio promovia...92 alguma coisa...alguem tem? ah tah, essa foi uma das minhas primeiras covers no youtube...chequem 'andrellsv mirror' na busca thanks
New bands are shit . LIVE along with pearl jam , alice in chains, nirvana ,soundgarden, toad the wet sproket and many others are our music so we have to be proud to have 30 or more years ......
My favorite song from their debut album total perfection
Such an amazing song. My favorite from Mental Jewelry

Ed wrote PLOTR when he was 19, but I have said the exact same thing about DOAD!
This song describes very well a thought I had when I was sick of depression and used to felt a deep empty in my life.
Thank god these days are gone for now.
Still own this cd the original I bought when it came out. This album takes me back to my idealistic very early 20s. Great music with brains
I love this performance! First time seeing today
I'm pretty sure I have this show taped on VHS 😊 Thanks posting, such a great song and precious piece of nostalgia.
Not enough words to say how much I love this.

I know that I should think about giving
And think about helping out
And think about, think about living
But I, I, I can't seem to rescue myself
I know that I should think about giving

And think about, think about living
But I, I, I can't seem to rescue myself
What about my bank account and my holy desert shield
That keep me dry under the arms?
Flags and mental jewelry's all I know
And they keep me happy and warm inside
So I said unto this man
"Who are you and where do you come from?"
And he proceeded to tell me
Many, many, many, many, many, many, many things, yea
But I said nothing at all
For the flowers in the corner, by the room
In the window, and the sun
Said it all
What about my bank account and my holy desert shield
That keep me dry under the arms?
Flags and mental jewelry's all I know
And they keep me happy and warm inside
At least they said they would
Said they could
Mama said they would
Do me good
I know that I should think about giving
And think about helping out
And think about, think about living
But I, I, I can't seem to rescue myself

12 years later it’s worse. Mental jewelry is all we have. True words

Nice hair boys!!! This is one of their best.
I agree give without waiting to receive or w/fear of becoming poor is where the ugly-deceiving-mirror breaks!!!
Great album. Far outdoes their other work

Hahaha Ed looks so different, I really love this band
The band isn't called Ed and the Guys, the band is called LiVE
From Heavier : Secret > Throwing > mental.

In a sense it's not as heavy as Throwing Copper, but a little more raw.
is this on the old Jon Stewart show...
