This casting came at time when MC Toy, precursors to Maisto, were selling carbon copies of Matchbox models. The Ford Sierra XR4i was released in 1983 by Matchbox at MB120 so it likely released a short time after this. Interestingly though, MC Toy opted to put 'Merkur XR4Ti' tampos over this example. Perhaps this was to aid marketability in North America.
The Merkur brand was launched by Ford in 1983 as an attempt to tap into the lucrative European executive market. Instead of creating a brand new model, the XR4i was shipped over from the German production line and fitted with a smaller but turbocharged Pinto engine (hence the T in the name). Merkyr is German for Mercury, through whose dealers the XR4Ti was sold.
I opt to customise my poorly example by painting it black, attempting to hide the big chunky black plastic bumpers the XR4 came equipped with.

Beautiful job Jason! That red line really makes it pop and the blue Ford badges make it look quite realistic.
What a transformation! It was so dirty but is beautifully finished and looks really nice. Thanks for sharing this.
The blue Ford badges make a huge difference, considering how tiny they are.
Looks great. I need a set of those wheels for my Sapphire Cosworth custom that I made from a Majorette Sierra hatchback.
The wheels, although perhaps more Sierra Sapphire 🤔 , are a really good choice, and always nice to see a Ford custom restoration 👌😁 . .
Nice restoration, details and paint job 👍👍
Beautiful custom there Jason that is one beautiful car I wish I could find it here in a states but it's hard to find but it's still a beautiful casting and a beautiful custom that you did to it keep up the good work and God bless
Great job Jason 👍
Cracking job
Awesome
the only car dirtier than this was a Siku, which had dirt clogging up the inside of the wheels...
the rear spoilers still look sorry, but what can you do about that. :P the paintjob is great and it fits better than the red which always looks kind of dull. love the wheels, too! :) it would be interesting to find the american wheels, though... this casting is almost as frequently found on german flea markets as the matchbox one. :)
Bob Lutz has a habit of rescueing fledgling car makers, it seems. he hooked up with Ford europe in late 75, and one of the first things he did was to bring back the Ford-"plum" emblem (while Dearborn actually had plans for forbidding the dependances to use the name "Ford", can you believe?), then he streamlined the pallette of cars and everythiung, brin ging Ford germany back into gear. then he left off to bring Opel back online. :P
Fantastic Jason - loved it! I wonder if those yellowed glass pictures could be cleared using a peroxide solution and a night under led uv light?
But more important congrats on a job well done - 3,5k heading towards 4K nicely
Thanks Malcolm! I’m trying the peroxide on a couple of screens at the moment actually. Tonight is the night to see if that’s worked for me after 3 days in the sun!
@@DieCastRestos fingers crossed !
i have one of these in blue, and in really good condition. any idea what it might be worth?
I'm thinking of making a Honda Concerto and 3 Rover 214s from this casting and the front of Matchbox Rover 800 Sterlings.
Sounds interesting. Best of luck with it and send me pics of the result!
@@DieCastRestos I've always thought the Rover 214 3 door looks like the 3 door Sierra from the side.
I find it really strange that no diecast company has ever made a Honda Concerto or a Rover 214 in any scale seeing as they were very popular cars in Europe. I think they would sell very well in any scale, especially 1/43 and 1/64.
Nice restoration of a rather poor casting. Those wheels and the paint job are a vast improvement.

Not a great deal sadly! Keep hold of it though, values may go up in a few years
MC. Toy. Custom ford sierra Xr4i Merkur xe4ti
Ford. Sierra. XR41 merkua. RX4T1 Okay 👍
Matchbox version of Ford Sierra XR4i casting looks exactly the same as MC Toy's version
Yeah I think MC Toy/Edocar/Maisto copied Matchbox castings in the 80s.
Q pasada!
