I like big nibs and I cannot lie You other writers can't deny When a pen shows up with an ebonite feed And that metal that you need It'll get sprung if you are too rough When you notice that feed is stuffed With Kon Peki, it just keeps flowing Not sure I can keep this going...
It was already becoming quite obvious over the past couple of years that Magna Carta was steadily working its way up to the quality standards you'd expect from other established manufacturers, but I was absolutely flabbergasted when I first wrote with the Mag 600. For decades we've been hearing how hard it would be to recreate no-compromises vintage flex nibs, and then these upstarts in India just went ahead and did it instead of talking about it. Impressive to say the least.
@BOGDAN SERBAN The Mag 600's nib is gold, not steel. It's also a larger pen than most vintage pens, you know it works and doesn't need restoration, and the filling system is much less fragile than the average vintage pen's filling system. They both have their place in the market.
@BOGDAN SERBAN Not all gold items have gold marks on them , and the marks could also be on the heel of the nib inside the grip section. Magna Carta claims they are 14k nibs in all their marketing materials, so that's what I will assume until someone puts one into an XRF spectrometer to show that they are not in fact 14k gold.
The “why” at the end when talking about mag1000’s nib made rolling on the floor with laughter 😂😂😂😂😂 That was the highlight of my day. Happy weekend, Drew.
Dang, now I need to see a nib comparison between the Mag 1000 and something like the Custom Urushi or even Namiki Emperor (or any other pens with similarly massive nibs)
The Magna Carta 600 with that super flexibility is exactly what I’ve been waiting for (and probably pestering you the last few years with all the “which flex” questions) for years!
The word you were looking for, Drew, was "flow". The ebonite feed supplies the mag600 with enough ink flow for its needs, which most so-called flex pens don't get. That said, the Fountain Pen Revolution flex and ultraflex (a totally different beast, a 14K ultraflex effortlessly puts down seriously wide lines without railroading) work well, and so do the Pilot Falcon SEF (gives reliable line variation like a good flex nib) and the Custom 743 FA (approaches a steel ultraflex in line width). You do need to learn to use a flex (or ultraflex pen), to give it enough pressure to open the nib but not so much that it splays the tines. You need to put good ink in it (iroshizuku tends to work well; I've struck out with Noodlers, Diamine, Herbin, Private Reserve, and Sailor inks; they're either too dry or too thin to keep a steady flow with a flex nib). One of the tricky things about flex pens is switching from flexed to unflexed; you can get too much ink flow at that point leading to blots and splotching. The Pilot pens work beautifully once you know how to flex because their ink flow is balanced: enough to keep up with the flex without railroading but not so much that you get blots and splotches. The 743 could use a bit less tipping so that it can write a finer hairline when unflexed, but overall it's a great calligraphy pen.
Love your Pencast, and love your humor and knowledge Drew. Thanks so much to Goulet Pen Company for all you put into educating us, helping with good purchase decisions, and indulging a love of all things pen, ink, and paper. Some feedback on a new product: I love the idea of the Endless Explorer leather cover, it's exactly the type of product I would buy, but not this version. A pet peeve is that several covers on the market, and now yours, do not actually cover the full edge of the journals inside. Not only does leaving the edges exposed and significantly detract from the appearance, but it causes the paper of the journals to become damaged and then just looks sloppy. Would love for you to consider adding the small amount of material to fully cover and protect the journals inside. Thank you for reading! And thanks again for all you do. 🙏
Now I finally understand what the plunger on my Opus does. I have their pocket pen and the build quality's amazing. Also, the designers at Sailor are my wallet's mortal enemies. You'd think theyre out of ideas by now but they continuously manage to amaze. Love how they can pull of glitter and still stay classy.
Hi Drew!: Thanks for showing all the new stuff! That MC flex pen is AMAZING! The MC Mag 1000. . .well you know what Teddy Roosevelt once said. . .speak softly but carry a BIG stick! The Mag 1000 is the BIG STICK! Those infinity inks look great too!
I've never been a fan of flex nibs (and I don't handle them well), but this Mag 600 is amazing! It is girthy without being too heavy for hours of writing, and the ebonite feed delivers so much ink that I don't find myself "railroading" as I have done before. Wow!
I love my Opus 88 clear demonstrator with a medium nib. It writes wonderfully, it looks beautiful, and the shut-off valve is great. I’m excited about this new blue patterned version.
Thank you for explaining how the opus 88 worked! I noticed you mentioned in some pencast that it was not a vacuum filler but I didn't understand how that stopper worked. You made it easy and clear! And now the opus 88 brand is much more appealing to me, as I don't like the vacuum fillers but I love the extra ink capacity for travelling. Maybe it's time to rise the budget...😅😅
The stopper in the Opus 88 is also helpful when you're traveling so the ink doesn't burp or leak into the pen cap if you don't have the fountain pen stored pointing up during the planes decent or accent .
Drew!!! Another great video!! I thought I would never say this buy I'll be buying the mag600. It will be the first new foutain pen I've bought. I've mentioned in your other videos I'm all about the flex which is why I have vintage fountain pens but the mag600 looks great. Oh yes....Im very glad to see your not drinking your "coffee "😅😂
I own a Mont Blanc 149 calligraphy flex, that is one amazing flex pen. It has enormous line variation and has been my favourite pen for some years now. It’s never really mentioned, I guess because it was a limited edition and quite more on the expensive side. I think I need to get my hand on one of these Magna pens to try them out
the mag600 demo was indeed impressive. I'd say you throw a little too much shade on the pilot FA, it is totally a modern flex pen and I never had flow issues with the size 15 and iroshizuku ink (I own two of these pens). I don't know if you could splay the tines quite that much safely, but it goes uef to probably a medium or broad with ease. A direct comparison would make a cool video. I'm sure both have their share of QC issues.
That Endless Explorer is nice to see. Previously manufacturers were really big on locking you in with their weird, mutually-incompatible paper sizes, so I hope it starts a trend.
Darn, wish I'd waited for you guys to carry the Magna Carta pens! Unfortunately, while the nib flex is amazing in mine, it needed a bit of adjustment and the feed doesn't keep up nearly as well as your example. Still currently the closest thing (as in near-identical) to vintage flex!
Thanks guys! I love these new crap vids! They frequently lead to orders from me 😢. I'm an A5/A4 guy myself so the explorer is on the way. And after a bad experience with an ef Saffron eco-T, I had a good experience from my Blue/bronze 1.1 so I've got the Rosso Evo coming as well in B. Can't wait!
I have a rule to not buy the same pen in different colors to keep my collection smaller, and I love my Opus 88 jazz holiday but that black version is calling my name.
I recently got the Opus 88 Omar demonstrator with a Fine Flex nib, and my only issue is that it is not really "fine" -- it's more like medium to almost broad, without pressure. So I ordered an "Extra Fine Flex" nib unit, which was not expensive and is easily swapped out. It's otherwise a very nice pen, with a good feel, and one of its best features is that it's easy to swap "screw-out" nib units for other Jowo-compatible units.
This was another fun video, Drew. Well done! That Magna Carta Mag 600 looks VERY interesting. I say yes, my wallet is hiding. Who will win? When you pulled out the Custom 823 to compare nibs with the Magna Carta Mag 1000, I burst into laughter. I love it! My first thought was Crocodile Dundee when he was held up at knife point and he asks the would-be mugger: do you call that a knife, THIS is a KNIFE! as he draws his from its sheath behind his back. (sorry, I'm paraphrasing; I haven't seen that movie in a lot of years, but the scene is etched indelibly on my brain --- as is the Magna Carta Mag 1000 now!!) Drew, I really think YOU NEED the 1000. It would be quite impressive when you take out your next $1,000,000 loan at the bank.

I got the Mag 600 (before Goulet had it) and was very excited based on the videos. Unfortunately it leaked, made blobs and burps and was basically useless, a huge disappointment and a complete waste of $300. I am still waiting for the replacement, hoping for better luck with their quality control. Magna Carta completely ignored my emails, but the retailer at least responded.
Yes, thanks, and I am a longtime, regular Goulet customer partly for that reason (as I said, Goulet didn't have this pen yet when I got it). In fairness, the other retailer also handled the issue in a similar way, and things began moving faster once I contacted them instead of Magna Carta. MIstakenly, at first I thought it best to contact the manufacturer, since the pen is sold with a generous warranty from them -- but I found the reality is that they don't answer customers directly.
Drew, you laugh at the Mag1000 but I think it's amazing and I want one! Although, to pair that nib with a wimpy c/c system seems like a miss. They should have at least copied the 9019 converter.
You know you need to hold up the Mag-1000 nib next to an emperor now. Boy howdy is that a big one. They must have set out to build the largest pen and nib you can. A fitting pen for Chewbacca, perhaps? In other notes, the Opus 88 in sapphire looks So. Good. Ugh. And yeah, solid acrylic takes away the nice ink sloshing you get with the clear demo, but... mhm. So pretty. Speaking of pretty, those ringless Sailors... a treat. I have my eye on the blue one. And the clear bodied Nexus is just neat. Dammit. I don't need all these expensive pens. I really don't. Or do I?...
Magna Carta 1000 looks like a stage prop. So Snidely Whiplash is waving the pen at Nell demanding she sign over the deed to her ranch. You have to be able to see it from the audience at a live action play!
The 1000 has a ginormous nib. Hope much for this pen? I love the Nexus. It is so...German. The price is a bit much, though. For the price I would opt for the the Opus 88 Demonstrator. I have to ask. How fast do the Private Reserve Infinity ink dry on paper being left handed. I also have a few pens that do dry out quickly.
Drew: I have a Decimo and I probably got a smaller nib than I should have. Using Diamine ink, it hard starts most of the time. The Private Reserve Infinity inks seem like a solution. But, the limited colors are stopping me. Question: Can I mix another manufacturer's ink (in really small quantities) to adjust the ink color and still have the 'non-drying' properties of the Infinity inks? I understand that along with the water and pigment, all inks have other ingredients to achieve their viscosity and drying.
Please in 24:20 what font style are you using ? Where can i learn it ? Are there any templates ? That font looks amazing !!! Is that blue ink can be bought on your website ? Thank you for your reply...
"I like big nibs and I cannot lie" Ha! Do you prefer the original Sir MIx a Lot version or the Jonathan Coulton version? I''m in UKGB (whatever) Yorkshire! So I will have to track down one of those Magna Carta 600s that looks amazing. Always enjoy your 'casts. Thanks.
I like big nibs and I cannot lie
You other writers can't deny
When a pen shows up with an ebonite feed
And that metal that you need
It'll get sprung if you are too rough
When you notice that feed is stuffed
With Kon Peki, it just keeps flowing
Not sure I can keep this going...
Brilliant! - Drew
Those are some bars 😁
mag600 is definitely the best modern flex on the market. they built that nib from the ground up, designed for flex, and it paid off.
Thank you!
I would call the Mag-1000 nib an absolute unit. Edited to add: Drew, you have a positively infectious smile.
Absolutely an absolute unit. - Drew
Drew, your giggle is contagious! The nib comparison has my cry-laughing.
I really can’t believe how good that Mag 600 can flex write. Extremely shocked. They’ve made a modern, vintage Waterman.
Pretty much! - Drew
@BOGDAN SERBAN The Mag 600's nib is gold, not steel. It's also a larger pen than most vintage pens, you know it works and doesn't need restoration, and the filling system is much less fragile than the average vintage pen's filling system. They both have their place in the market.

That flex is bringing up... Unbelievable sights and indescribable feelings
Haha! Well done, Beckerino. - Drew
Have we been sleeping on Drews handwriting?! Gorgeous.
Dang, now I need to see a nib comparison between the Mag 1000 and something like the Custom Urushi or even Namiki Emperor (or any other pens with similarly massive nibs)
Another nice thing about the Opus 88, as Aziza demonstrated: you can easily swap the nib with a Pilot Parallel to have fun playing with it and ink.
The Magna Carta 600 with that super flexibility is exactly what I’ve been waiting for (and probably pestering you the last few years with all the “which flex” questions) for years!
Wow. That Magna Carta is delicious to watch!
"Hello! My name is Drew- you're you, and that's who you should be right now." -Drew Brown being super great per usual.

I've found this Magna Carta to be much more reliable than the various Falcon nibs. - Drew
I got the Endless notebook and so far I like it. The only thing that would make it even better would be if you could buy more of the 7 mm notebooks.
We'll have those available soon! - Drew
Than you, very adult and professional.
Wowsers trousers that is a stupendous flex nib 🤩 enjoyed how tickled you were by the GigantoPen™ as well. 😆

Drew, I love your facial expressions when showing the Mag 1000 nib!!! :-)
I always enjoy these weekly updates of what’s new with Drew. An interesting and informative collection this week. 😊
Fine review of new products Drew!

Would love to see the Montblanc 149 Calligraphy Flex vs Regalia Crossflex vs the Magna Carta Mag 600 vs the Fountain Pen Revolution gold Ultraflex!
Wow, I haven't seen that level of flex and I do use flex nibs for shorthand. Honestly, it may be worth more of a look at. Thanks for picking it up! ❤

Great flex by the Mag 600. I hope Magna Carta will offer this nib in a wider selection of barrels and trim colors in the future.
Wow Wow Wow!,,

I'm happy we have a new video, but I really miss the pencast
You'll have a new one tomorrow! - Drew
Kinda digging the Opus Jazz in blue, however, the black is also nice c:
Oh that Endless Explorer Journal has my attention!
Already ordered the Inkvent calendar. Looks like fun!
Holy smokes that flex! I can't believe that there isn't railroading. Wow. Also, Diplomat is a GREAT company. I'm excited about that Nexus.
The Magna Carta pens are amazing, go India!
Drew, when you are saying "F word" - it reminds me of a meme popular in my department: "Friday - my second favourite word starting with >F
I want the Endless Explorer and the Magna Carta 600. I'll be calling you!😍

That nib is amazing! I just recently started using dip pens with Brause Steno and Rose.. but this is great.
That Mag600 is really impressive
15:36 dying right now 😂
the nib on that mag 1000 reminds me a lot of the old waterman no.10 nib. God I whish I could get my hands on one of those

I really want to try one of those opus 88 demos!
I recently got the Opus 88 Omar demonstrator with a Fine Flex nib, and my only issue is that it is not really "fine" -- it's more like medium to almost broad, without pressure. It's otherwise a very nice pen, with a good feel, and one of its best features is that it's easy to swap "screw-out" nib units for other Jowo-compatible units.

You just made that 823 so self conscious and insecure 😂
Oh my gosh Drew, This is the flex that I need. Thanks for your input on my question this week.
P.S. My name is Jenn Hunt
This was another fun video, Drew. Well done! That Magna Carta Mag 600 looks VERY interesting. I say yes, my wallet is hiding. Who will win? When you pulled out the Custom 823 to compare nibs with the Magna Carta Mag 1000, I burst into laughter. I love it! I like the 'subdued' Drew.
I don't know.... that M1000 is gonna make the other pens in the collection feel inadequate 😂😂
That opus88 is pretty
honestly i like small nibs in terms of looks but i really need a lot of distance between hand n paper Im messuring consistent 35mm from my finger tips to the end of the nib maybe that Mag1000 would be a very comfy pen for me
i am so sad we are out of work and can't indulge in Goulet Pens orders like I used to (sniffle) i love flex nibs

Have ordered the mag 600 flex hope it is fun to use!
I’d love to hear an update on how you like it :)
I purchased little circular dots on Amazon to put on the top of the sample bottles. I intended on either q-tip or dip pen to put a sample of ink on the lid via this dot sticker. Much to my chagrin, the sticker was much too glossy and couldn't get the ink to stick.
Could you find a matte or paper sticker that could be added to the top of the sample bottle?
Why not use a hole punch and make your own circular dots from white paper? A dab of Pritt Stick type glue on the bottle cap should do the trick.
@@konradyearwood5845 valid point
That’s what I was thinking of doing! 👍
Hm. May be you could try to find paper savers for the loose leaf paper that are not glossy and matted where ink could stay of the small donut paper savers.
I was looking on Amazon and they do have white dots that you can write on. So ink will probably be able to stain the dot with the ink color

3 acre nib! - Drew
Drew, you laugh at the Mag1000 but I think it's amazing and I want one! Although, to pair that nib with a wimpy c/c system seems like a miss. They should have at least copied the 9019 converter.
