As an electronic engineer I can tell you with confidence that wireless devices will not cause harmful interference to avionics. The rule/laws was created out of ignorance.
If you're a pilot and someone is using an electronic device just scream over the PA "OH DEAR GOD SOMEONES USING AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE" and then do a barrel roll
This guy sounds to me he doesn't like following the rules. Rules and laws are made to protect us. Obviously there is a reason to turn off your devices. The other thing that amazes me is that he is smart enough to write a book allegedly but couldn't find airplane mode for the device. Idiot!!! SMH!!!
I've worked in avionics, RF engineering, and electronics ranging from military to civilian applications. There is zero, none, nil, nada risk of interference to the on board avionics from commercial/consumer electronics. Back when transistors were vacuum tubes, perhaps there was real cause for concern with devices that transmit and receive. It's 2014, so show us the data FAA or drop the silly "bans"
I don't think they're banned due to interference to the avionics. The FAA is considering (or was?) allowing devices during cruise. Their only concern is annoying other passengers, not disrupting flight systems. Their concern is passengers being distracted during the two most critical points of the flight - take off and landing. They want you to be aware of your surroundings and able to receive, process, and respond to information should an emergency occur. If you've got head phones in or are playing on an iPad, their argument is, you won't be able to react as quickly as you might need to in an emergency. I don't think the FAA has argued that devices interfere with avionics for many years.
They were initially banned because they were causing troubles to cell phone towers by switching between them too rapidly due to the fast movement of the aircraft, not because they are causing interference to the plane.
Ummm it's not "turn off all electronics devices", it's stop devices from transmitting. They specifically say airplane mode is acceptable.....last I checked, the camera still works in airplane mode. Yes, all of this still valid in 2012.
They do not say "turn off your devices.", They USED TO, like pre- 2010. They now say "Put your devices into flight mode". there was no reason for the letter.
Wrong. Every single domestic flight in the country instructs all passengers to TURN OFF all electronic devices until the Captain has given the ok to turn them back on. *Then* they are to be operated in Airplane mode only. Same reason Alec Baldwin was removed from a flight. He tried to use the airplane mode bullshit excuse.
Glitch I've flown to several different countries in the last 2 years (not America) and flight mode is asked for during take off and landing. It's OK to use Wi-Fi while flying. I always use my phone to record take off and landing the first time I visit a country.
Boy wouldn't people be pissed if the FAA banned all electronic devices from commercial flights because smug jerks like this can't follow instructions. They should have banned him from flying for two years!
I'm an aircraft mechanic and I can say with complete peace of mind that your basic, everyday devices that are allowed on commercial flights are going to do absolutely jack shit to the aircraft. The "rule" to turn off or switch to airplane mode is pure rubbish.
You can have handheld devices turned on and not stowed provided it's in airplane mode. Nothing is preventing you from capturing video during takeoff and landing. Why don't people understand the basics of how technology works?
Although electronics can't physically take down airplanes there is something called magnetic deviation which causes the aircraft's navigation equipment and instruments to act funky due to the magnetic fields given off by electronics.
Actually filming could be a very useful device for the NTSB to discover the cause of crash. Many times a witness on the ground shot a video of a plane going down. Shooting a video on a plane could be even more useful.
The reason they don't let you use large electronics during takeoff and landing is that in the event of a mishap/crash, the device can become a projectile! Also, if you use cell data, there is an annoying sound on the radios! Nothing crash causing, it is just annoying for the pilots.
The PED ban was lifted a year after this video was made. So all those people in the comments recently critiquing this guy for breaking the rules- yeah the rules were found to be baseless and were eliminated. Google "FAA PED ARC" and read the findings of the Aviation Rulemaking Committee report on Personal Electronic Devices. The findings were that commercial airplanes can tolerate radio interference from PEDs. Boeing even came out and said "Boeing has not been able to find a definite correlation between PEDs and the associated reported airplane anomalies". The ban was put into place because there was a lot of uncertainty about interference caused by PEDs. It was a rule based on ignorance. Now that the ignorance is gone and we have real data showing them to be harmless, it's absurd to continue to rebuke this guy for breaking a rule that ended up being struck because it had no basis in reality. And all you unthinking drones saying "follow the rules" look retarded now that we know these devices are completely harmless to aircraft.
I think a large part of that decision was based on the fact that virtually all devices in use today have an airplane that shuts off signals so you can work on your device without interfering with IFR. But I will defer to your knowledge of technical side of this issue. You seem to know it better than I do. I would like to point out though that many laws and rules are void or for all intents and purposes suspended on a case by case basis when an emergency occurs and when following the rule or law will have worse results than choosing not to or when one is breaking the rule or law in order to document an emergency. For example if you are a passenger on a plane and the plane has just lost it's engines and you are about to crash and so you take out your cell phone and turn it on to document the crash. Even if you somehow survive, no court is going to permit you to be prosecuted for breaking the rule against recording the plane crash and the FAA owes this passenger an apology since he used his device solely to document what could have been a disaster. On certain military bases and installations it is a federal offense to take out your cell phone and start making a video of certain things. But if a disaster occurs and you are making the recording for the sole purpose of documenting the disaster and turn that recording over to the military for investigatory purposes even if you are a civilian, it is doubtful they would prosecute you. They might interview you extensively to make sure you didn't learn something top secret but they won't prosecute if your intention was to assist the military and especially if your action actually was beneficial to the military. There are all kinds of situations where a law or rule is suspended for emergencies, even ones that are otherwise good. I'm not a pilot nor do I work for an airline but a friend of mine is a commercial pilot and informed me that most of the so called security rules that were created after 9-11 are pointless and arbitrary and their only purpose is to make passengers think they are safer. As a machinist I can tell you that I have the skills to make very effective fire arms that TSA screening would not be able to discover in my luggage. I won't share how that is done because I won't contribute to endangering the public but my skills are not especially advanced and there are thousands of machinists with better skills than myself who could do this more easily than I could. I could construct such a weapon in a few days. It would show up in X-rays and I don't even have to hide it from the TSA. I could open my luggage and show them the weapon and they would not recognize it as such and would think it was perfectly innocent. Any competent machinist could make such a weapon. It would be far better to just make sure there were at least two sky marshals on every flight and at present only a fraction of flights have sky marshals on them.
@nunya biznez Personal electronic devices rules were actually implemented very good reasons there are good reason for them to last as long as they did. Some of those reasons are still quite legitimate today. While while airplanes fly using GPS navigation these days we used to use radio fixes and inertial navigation. So those old style analog cell phones and older RF tweaking laptops we're probably best left off in the 1990s. Those devices are all perfectly safe now. But the rules stayed in place 4 passenger safety. Most flight incident take place between 0 and 10000 feet on the take off or landing phases of flight. If your passengers are all holding big metal objects when you impact the ground those objects will continue to haul ass in a forward Direction at the speed and in the direction you are already going while the airplane in your body come to a sudden stop. And if you're busy with your phone or video camera trying to get that perfect video to put up on Facebook while getting an engine full of geese and you come down still twisted up looking out the window you can get a nice broken neck :-) If you see a bunch of birds getting sucked into your airplane tell the first crew member you can possibly get the attention of. And then pay attention the crew because you are now the local expert on what just happened and where. How many birds which engines that sort of thing. Fly safe!
It wasn't a phone. It was an iPad. An iPad is bigger and if the plane starts to shake from say a bird strike, then the iPad may get loose and hit somebody in the head.
Thomas Rock :( Wait wtf, birds are actually planes. Uh no, it was funny but no. See birds can fly cause they flapp their wings. Planes have giant jet engines and giant stationary wings. The Jets push an the STATIONARY wings do their job......Witch is to.....keep the plane from falling...but not up and down. Never mind now that I've read this, yeah birds are small planes
"If these devices are that dangerous then the FAA has a responsibility to ban them [or take stronger action to stop their use]" I totally agree with this, that seems like a valid argument. The whole thing sounds like rules for the sake of rules.
Thousands of people film takeoffs. This is a non-issue. What concerns me is the amount of people saying "obey, rules, authority, comply, law,". There is an authoritative trend in America right now and it's unsettling. Grow a spine people.
rules exist for a reason, and rules mean nothing if they are not enforced, the rule is no electronics during takeoff, that means NO ELECTRONICS DURING TAKEOFF
So the rule is stupid and should be abolished immedietely, but the pilot in command has the final say to what happens on that flight - the cabin crew are an extension of the pilot. Even if FAA had zero guidelines on it, it's within the pilot's right to tell people to do whatever he likes onboard an airplane. The rule is stupid, but the pilot and cabin crew are the authority you must listen to unless you want to be dropped off 300 miles from your destination.
Benjamin Wyrick If that is the case and we need to follow the rules of a privately owned airline, why then did this man receive a letter from the FAA? FEDERAL Aviation Administration. The government agency which overlooks flight safety in the US. What business does the government have enforcing rules set up by a private enterprise?
@Benjamin Wyrick your comparision sucks and so do you 1. we paid to "use" their private property 2. shitting in someone elses yard is far from harmless (colera ftw) 3. shitting in their yard is only prohibited during morning and increasing moon...which makes no sense.
The reason they don't let you use large electronics during takeoff and landing is that in the event of a mishap/crash, the device can become a projectile! Also, if you use cell data, there is an annoying sound on the radios! Nothing crash causing, it is just annoying for the pilots.
In 2017, you are free to use your handheld devices at any time during the flight (every flight I've been on for 2 years now in the US) as long as they are in Airplane mode. They only specifically state that laptops should be turned off and stowed". I would qualify a tablet as a "handheld" device. I've recorded many many takeoffs and landings without breaking the rules and there are THOUSANDS of them on UA-cam. The "rules" didn't protect the plane from anything otherwise why are they still not in effect?
It took time for the FAA to make sure that everything was ok. Also, they did linked some instrument malfunction to some cellphone or other devices on older airplanes. The airplanes instruments got upgraded or modified since then and now is mostly immune to any issue, and the pilots are trained to find out that the instrument may be jammed by a device in the back. However, this video fail to talk about the real point: the aircraft was crippled by the bird strike. An emergency was then possible and they require every bit of attention from the passengers, and any delays must be avoided. The letter probably talk about this, but they "strangelly" failed to talk about anything but what is 'newsworthy'.
Was in the Air Force, as an aircraft mechanic for 20 years. You are not told to shut off your phone because it is going to crash a plane. You were told to shut off your phone, or other hand held device, so you're paying attention to the flight attendants and any safety instructions in the event of an emergency. With your earphones in you may not be able to hear such instructions. You may note that the letter sent this individual said that the usage of his phone may have interfered with safety. It did not say with the operation of the aircraft. Also please notice that the man on the left talking about using his phone it's not a pilot or engineer. Although using his phone would not crash the airplane, he cannot speak to the fact that if 10% of people use their phones they would crash the airplanes they were on. Of course they won't, but he is not in any way an expert. I would like to say one more time they don't want you to use your electronic devices that you are listening to emergency instructions. Thank you for your time and we are aware that you have a choice in mobile devices and we would like to thank you for watching this CNN video.
Finally, the amount of comments arguing over this and not looking at the actual reason why he got the notice is ridiculous. I'm training to be a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer in the UK and it's funny because not only does a PED affect safety, on much older aircraft like our Jetstream 31 a mobile phone can affect avionics if live as there is no shielding in some wires due to the design age of the aircraft.
Seconded. I like how he basically says 'I'm not above the law, but to think my little device could cause an issue...' It's like he's saying 'I know I'm wrong, BUT...' There's no "but." As the host said, either follow the rules or don't fly. I'd think twice about doing business with a consultant who seems unable to take responsibility and tends to make excuses or goes off on a tangent instead....
Worst case scenario is that the old or mod phones will make the magenta line (on the NAV screen) wiggle a bit. Also, possibly some buzzing on the radios. They are slight annoyances but no where near unsafe. There are many other sources of interference that are much worse (i.e. thunderstorms) and pilots know how to deal with them.
Put away the interference thing it is also the fact that people are not fully aware of the situation around if something happens while playing or listening to something else!!! So just abide to what you’re flight attendant say to you
He must not understand the technical aspects of flight AT ALL! I’ve been building paper airplanes for 28 years and ALL of the major incidents I’ve encountered were cell phone related. From the phone going off in my pocket and distracting my throw....to the worst, someone on their cell phone walking INTO MY FLIGHT PATH!
the reason that was explained to me by a flight attendant for why we have to turn off our electronics, is that takeoff and landings are the most likely times for something to go wrong. airlines don't want us to be distracted by a pair of headphones in case emergency instructions have to be told to the passengers. however, they still let you read books and talk to the people sitting around you during takeoff and landing so there's definitely a double standard. but it's not really that big a deal for me to turn off my phone twice for half an hour.
they use it strictly for aviation purposes only, its illegal for the pilots to be using electronic devices for non-flight operations in any commercial flight
I remember back in the day when you weren't legally allowed to have electronics on during flight below 10,000 feet. Glad we are not in those times anymore, such a huge myth.
Is this guy an expert on RFI/EMI? No. His reasoning that if a device is on it will not take down a plane so they can be used is ludicrous. These rules were put in place because RF engineers believed they're might be a problem during takeoff and landing - no matter how slight. The rules are there, comply with them! If these rules are to be revised, it will be by recommendation from RF/EM engineers, not a NYT best selling author with a sense of entitlement.
Some people don't understand technology or the applicable requirement in this case. You can capture video using a tablet while in airplane mode. Assuming it was in airplane mode, then the requirement he failed to comply with was to stow that device during takeoff. The legitimate purpose of that requirement is to prevent it from hitting passengers. Having said that, the requirement to turn off wireless devices on takeoff and landing is bogus.
Devices not in airplane mode cause legitimate interference with communication systems. This is why you are asked to place devices in airplane at critical times of the flight such as takeoff or landing. Interference during an emergency can result in miscommunication between the Captain or F/O and ATC which can turn a usually recoverable emergencies such as bird strikes and propulsion or avionics failures, into tragedies.
They DO NOT SAY TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES, they say place laptop computers away and phone and tablets in airplane mode. THE FAA IS COMPLETELY OVERREACTING
How many private jets crash a year because of cell phones or tables......probably zero. My first on a private jet flight a few years ago I asked the pilot if I had to turn everything off. He looked at me like I was crazy and told me no it was fine to have everything on.
And the people who leave their phones on because they forgot and never take them out of their pockets will get away scott free while the videoer in aeroplane mode would get in trouble.
[TFS] Sludgy Spoon500 you're told to put your tables up because if there is an emergency and you have to evacuate the plane any table being down coud inhibit the ability for passengers to exit the plane. Be it getting up and into the aisles, or bumping into them trying to exit over the wings. People are insane in emergencies. Their brains don't work quite as efficient in a emergency situation, so by having the tables up it is one less obstacle someone has to think about in order to get out safely.
"..Did you just compare a private jet to a commercial flight with much more sophisticated equipment.."Oh please do enlighten us about this "more sophisticated equipment"
Why does Grant Cardone need commercial flights? As a scientologist he should be able to go exterior at will. He's supposed to command matter, energy, space and time. Fail.
Officiousness at its best. "Do it, because, I say so" Sense, has nothing to do with this, "Just do what I say", or someone will get all uppity, Hey. Got 'em here in Australia, also. No one is game to make a decision.
Or maybe Australians and Europeans are more educated wally, ever wonder why American talk shows and news are so stupid and uneducated? Because your population is simply stupid. Do you even know why every mobile phone has a "flight mode", stop with your conspiracy theories and instead receive an education.
I listen to and follow crew instructions. I still would like to know, Why is "put away your electronic devices" a legitimate directive? Why are flight attendants forced to enforce the FAA directive, which is apparently bogus, when flight crews use such devices throughout the trip?
Part of the reason they say put LARGE items away is because if there is a serious incident and the plane makes a sudden move, there aren't heavy objects flying around hitting people in the head. The iPads (or GoPro's etc...) they use are strongly attached to the plane so they won't fly around in any sudden movements. Also if there is an extremely serious incident (which are most common at TO/Landing) then people have their attention outside, so there are witnesses, and are not so preoccupied about other things and can get out ASAP if things go wrong. I'm with the FAA on this one, even if the rules have been relaxed, there are reasons behind them (even if just precautionary) and at the end of the day, it's the law so follow it!
What I also once heard is that not only do such objects could become serious projectiles whenever the plane would make a sudden move, it's also to stop cellphones (and maybe iPads who connect to something like 3G or 4G as well) from communicating with multiple cell towers in the network at once (because the devce is basically in the line of sight of multiple towers, while the distance between each tower is to minimal for the network to come to a common agreement on which tower to do the handshake with the device with), which can disrupt the network. I can still vividly recall how my CRT monitor started flickering like crazy whenever I would make a request to show my prepaid amount left, and that was only a USSD code request, instead of actually calling, because during a call the amount of transmission power used can vary wildly. I'd say, better safe than sorry, there isn't exactly much of a margin for error while taking off or landing in case there is a disruption.
Dutch3DMaster "I can still vividly recall how my CRT monitor"... you nailed it. Shit latter day electronics that are now all in the bin. does your phone crash when you use its flash. What about those incredibly sensitive sensors inside? It's all BS now. Lets not mention a/c are designed to take lightning but phones would be toasted if hit.
m1aws Absolutey true, I was trying to make a point about the possibility of interference. The Mythbusters have investigated interference caused by cellphones in aviation electronics and if I recall correctly they recreated some of the signals using twice the amount of power a cell phone can put out during a call with maximum transmission power. Even with the antenna right next to aan bundle of cables running through the floor they were not able to disrupt anything. While CRT monitors are not as commonly used anymore as they used to, the interference that caused them to malfunction is still there, the industry probably simply managed to protect their devices better nowadays.
Guys. Daughter of a pilot, flight instructor and aviation safety advisor here. FAA rules stem from "an overabundance of caution," which is literally what keeps you safe on the aircraft. The electronic interference rules have a legitimate source; the largest mass-casualty commercial aviation disaster (the runway collision at Tennerife) happened in part because a frequency heterodyne, i.e. radio interference, prevented the pilots and ground control from hearing critical info as it was being communicated. 500-some people died in that incident. These aviation experts are some of the most passionately meticulous professionals alive and there IS A REASON they tell you to do what they tell you. You are not smarter than them no matter how asinine their rules seem.
Yeah… And cellphone frequencies collide and penetrate with avionics, atc control etc.. No they don’t. Meanwhile ATC in 2018 is still using unencrypted, half-duplex, AM modulated audio transfer as the main source of communication between planes (pilots). Even the more modern secondary system (TCAS/transponder) is unencrypted, but at least it handles full-duplex communication! With modern communication technologies, the Tenerife disaster would have been avoided (not that it would not have been avoided by following the rules at that time, just leading to a delay, of which they were under pressure to gain back anyway…) Frequency bands exist for a reason, and cellphones cannot, even with extensive low level hacking, transmit at frequencies used by aviation. EMI regulations make a more than sufficient barrier against avionics interference. The only real reason to prohibit the use of mobile devices during takeoff (remember, a lot of planes have wifi, which can be used in the air..) is to stop them flying around in case of an emergency, a bump or any sudden movement AND most importantly to make the passengers present in the situation and not in the latest episode of Game of Thrones!
That incident HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH COMMERCIAL ELECTRONICS SOMEHOW INTERFERING WITH AIRPLANE AVIONICS/ COMMUNICATIONS. It came from an outside source..nice try.p
I was once on a flight where the pilots were having radio trouble prior to take off. Turns out one passenger (the one in the seat infront of me) had a particular model of phone that DID interfere with the plane’s communication system. Later in the flight the flight attendant explained to that passenger (and those around them like me) that there are probably 3 old models of phones which do affect planes and to get around this they have a blanket rule and ask everyone to turn them off. Our flight was delayed 30 minutes while flight attendants demanded everyone take out their phones and show them they were completely turned off. Once the passenger with the problem phone took it out, it was recognised and the flight attendant said they had to stow in in the overhead bin above her seat for the duration of the flight. She took the battery out to be certain it was off. All other phones were also checked and put away, one by one, with every passenger being seen doing this by the flight attendant. thats the only flight ive ever been on where i did not see a single person with anything electronic on at all. NOBODY DARED TAKE OUT THEIR DEVICES! One man had a sudoku book, broke his pencil and sat there saddly. The flight attendant noticed and she didnt have a pen or anything but did give him some colouring pencils. They were really nice but yeah noone dared use electronics after that!
Isaac Cool android isnt a phone, its a operating software. its basically the girl that gets passed around at the parties. "androids" arent any better, its all about the company. samsung is the only apple competitor. its not android vs apple, its samsung vs apple...
Lots of stupid commentors. Its not about electronic signals. Its about the device flying around the cabin. Most airlines make you put away books especial large hard covers. Your tray up is so it cant move and hit your legs or a small person their face. Seat in an up right position gives the maximum area for your head to be away from the tray or seat infront of you. You get hit in the head by an IPod or lap top and you sue the airlines for not making the person put it away.
No sir, YOUR comment is stupid. They tell you to stow away any lose items, yes. But they always tell you to put cell phones and tablets in "airplane mode". It is understood that any item whether a purse, wallet, eyeglasses, or Beats Headphones can cause injury in the event of a crash. Every flight I have been on, always has several people wearing bulky headphones throughout the flight. Having everyone's devices in "airplane mode" is done as extra measure of precaution. I suspect that there may be another undisclosed reason for this. Maybe numerous cell phones in use could mask legitimate threats like electronic jamming or hacking attempts? If normal cell phone usage was even remotely a serious concern cell phones would be required to be stowed with your checked baggage. Otherwise a terrorist would have to do nothing more than board a plane with nothing more than a couple of cell phones and a data enabled tablet, then have them on transmitting throughout the flight. Regardless, I still want everyone ELSE'S phones off during aircraft operations. I for one, know I am not a terrorist. This douche however is nothing more than an attention whore. He was looking for publicity. He said himself he called CNN, who is always quick as any tabloid outfit to jump on a story like this. He could have easily told them that it was in "airplane mode" but I am sure he provocatively blasted social media saying it was not on. Anyway, for the rest of you - Yall keep your phones off now, ya hear??!!
frank1823 I don't appreciate being called stupid, but I do know what I am talking about. Since you gave an intelligent response I think you deserve an explanation. At an aiport that is just medium sized there are over 6 million plus signals constantly hitting the plane your body, everything. As an operator in the miltary I spent 4 weeks at a signals course and 4 at an FCC briefing course. This was to teach us how to JAM signals and recieve signals etc. FYI cellphone towers are constantly trying to ping your phone if it is off/on or in airplane mode. Airplane mode simply doesn't allow you to use your phone with all its uses. We have tracked numerous phones in airplane mode. I we had a briefing with the FAA. The main reason with idiots with head sets cannot hear instructions by the crew or pilot. Laptops can fall into the aisle and slide. This was under confidentiality an over weight passenger was holding his MP3 player and when taking off he was startled and due to his natural reaction to put his arms straight back he missed his hand rest and ended up basically punching a child in the body. They wouldnt tell us boy or girl or where he made contact. Anyway, I agree just follow the rules.
James, it appears perhaps we have a language barrier because your response indicates you did not understand my post. I did not call YOU stupid. I was going with the generous assumption that you did not understand what I said due to English not being your first language although a strong case for the former seems to be developing here. I said your COMMENT is stupid in retort to your post describing OTHERS as being stupid themselves. I do not feel I have enough information to form an opinion on your intelligence but nonetheless one is starting to form. I am curious about you being "an operator in the military". I am assuming you mean as in the military's traditional description of an operator. Where is your unit stationed and how large of a unit is it? I find it curious because I have never met an "operator" that ever called himself such. This is something you usually have to drag out. I usually found out when they filled out a job application. Anyway, I digress. Your response is rambling all over the place and does not do much to address what I stated. Nothing you said answers the subject of why they are telling you to put your phone into "airplane mode" if all they are really interested in, is that you secure it so it doesn't hit some old lady in the back of the head, a nano second before everyone's bodys are ripped into a thousand indiscernible shreds of flesh as the plane impacts the ground. You said in your first post " Its not about electronic signals. Its about the device flying around the cabin". Then you say in your second post " there are over 6 million plus signals constantly hitting the plane" which, if true, seems to support my theory that a few more signals aren't going to affect anything significantly. Either that or you are indicating that signals ARE affecting the plane which is contradicting what you first said. Then you ramble on about "idiots with head sets cannot hear instructions", sliding laptops, and then end with fat passengers who might accidentally hit children of undisclosed gender. I am fair minded and can be described of above average intelligence, but I do not suffer nonsense very well. So it is with all due respect, that I ask, WHAT IN THE FUCK ARE TALKING ABOUT?
The rule is to always listen and abide to the flight attendant. They are in charge. It has nothing to do with mobile phones or not. It has more to do with the guy's behaviour and he behavied in such way he could easily create fear and panic with other passengers. Such fear and panic is potential very dangerous to the safety and security of the plane. The staff onboard is in charge and are professionals. If they ask you to do something you better to obey. The guy is now recorded to not obey safety instructions and is therefore a security and safety hazard. What's next from this guy? Running around onboard and refusing to sit down and fasten the seat belt during landing and take off? At any time, the flight attendants and officers onboard and in charge of the plane can ask you to stop an activity which is deemed at that moment to threaten the health and safety of other passengers and the plane.
What's next for this guy? Well he bought himself a private jet as a matter of fact! Now he can do whatever he wants whenever he wants! Go Grant Cardone!
filmtajm35 you can't compare taking a video on a cell to running around a plane? That's idiotic. Airplanes are not affected by just recording stuff on your phone. That's like telling him don't use a blanket because it affects the plane..like what is that
Marino De Jesus What's not all he did. The video clip is not showing his behaviour before or after he was filming the birds. It's just because of this behaviour he was told off as I have earlier explained.
Filmtajm35, dont start to compare taking a video and running in the isle on takeoff, they are two vastly different things. Recording a video isn't a safety hazard, its not putting anyone at risk...
For the record, the FAA's regulations don't say shit about being able to record with an iPad if you're a passenger. Hell, the exact wording of every safety briefing on every flight I've ever been on is as follows: "At this time, we ask that you power down and stow any laptops and other large electronics. You may continue to use your handheld devices that have been placed in airplane mode..."
During takeoff and landing is the highest potential for a crash. 150 people holding I-pads is 150 projectiles flying through the cabin potentially injuring or killing people who might have otherwise lived through a crash on takeoff or landing. During a hard crash not one person will hang on tightly to his I-pad to safe guard other people. This citation was utterly appropriate.
Even if it wasn't in Airplane Mode, a phone does not actually interfere with the plane. They just use it as an excuse to get people to listen to safety instructions at the beginning of the flight.
the only reason airlines tell people to pack away their devices is so they can pay attention to the safety briefings and be ready for an emergency during departure and landing.
I can give you three very good reasons why you should have your device turned off below 10,000ft. 1. In instrument conditions where pilots are flying in cloud, they rely on a ILS (Instrument Landing Slope). This gives them a reading on their glide for landing and electronic devices emitting radio waves can interfere with the AM radio frequency the plane uses for that instrument. 2. Take off and landing are the most critical phases in aviation. Chances are when you are at or below 10,000ft in a commercial airliner you are either going to land or taking off (climbing to altitude). People who use their iPads during the critical phases of aviation are not very responsive to emergency situations and in fact during important safety announcements they are distracted from their device. Besides. Why be on a device when you can get beautiful views outside. Pilots don't even use their mobile phones when flying. You don't need to use an iPad or phone either, there's no reception anyway. 3. During take off and landing while you carry a large device like an iPad, it can be really heavy if it falls out of your hand. It won't simply drop but will fall either backwards when taking off or forward landing which can hit someone and cause serious injuries. They fall at high velocities too since the plane is traveling at 250knots (almost 500kmh or 310 mph) which can be pretty bad. You don't feel that speed, but I'm sure the passenger behind you would if your iPad smashed him in the head during take off. Always listen to the instructions of flight crew. You do not know better than them. They do this for a reason, not to be assholes but to protect the safety of everyone.
1:42 she says...''evidence by - A- the video of the planes being sucked into the engine which''..... Apparently CNN has not taught this newscaster the difference between birds and planes.
The FAA doesn't regulate this. Each airline decides for itself what devices can be on during flight. There is NO law that says turn off your phone in flight.
It wasn't that long ago that you couldn't even turn on a Walkman during a flight. Those rules were so over the top and overreaching that they finally relaxed them when they realized most passengers were ignoring them anyway. Like Ali said, if these devices were really the threat they were, they would have to be forcibly banned in the interest of public safety.
Meanwhile, air crew are notorious for checking in with their loved ones, etc. at the same time they're telling passengers to turn off their electronic devices.
Yeah I'm sure if he had his phone off those birds would not have flown into that engine. This was totally his fault.

I get that it's sarcasm but I don't get the true point. Sarcasm means the opposite right? But the opposite doesn't even make sense.
Pine Sol the point is the tablet had zero influence on what did or didn't happen on the flight
DaBrute
Well, to me, it's a confusing way of saying it.
As an electronic engineer I can tell you with confidence that wireless devices will not cause harmful interference to avionics.
The rule/laws was created out of ignorance.
If you're a pilot and someone is using an electronic device just scream over the PA
"OH DEAR GOD SOMEONES USING AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE"
and then do a barrel roll
It's a good thing I'm not an airline pilot, because I'd probably do that.
It can if it's an airbus
Also 737's and Airbus' cannot do barrel rolls.
Meister Kaos yea genius try to barrel roll a boeing 777-9x, genius😉
@@misterkaos.357 no you wouldn't you pussy

youferrer you are my sanity. Why people don't know that amazes me
Look at the date of the video. Back then you had to turn everything off. Now you don't.
This guy sounds to me he doesn't like following the rules. Rules and laws are made to protect us. Obviously there is a reason to turn off your devices. The other thing that amazes me is that he is smart enough to write a book allegedly but couldn't find airplane mode for the device. Idiot!!! SMH!!!
youferrer someone at the faa needs to get slapped.
Michael Giannace And whats the reason to turn off your tablet on a plane, smartass ?
***** I agree 100% and seriously folks...you can't turn the damn thing off for a few minutes? Bunch of spoiled toddlers.
***** ::applause::
I've had my phone that I've left on in my pocket interfere with a Dash 8's navigation equipment during landing...
They now say "Put your devices into flight mode". there was no reason for the letter.
flight mode during the flight, but not on take off and landing. At least thats what they say in European flights.
WRONG...you obviously haven't flown lately.
WRONG....Airplane mode is all you need from door closed to door open. They changed it a few years ago...I fly a LOT!
Birds always striking, demanding better wages and 401k.

Boy wouldn't people be pissed if the FAA banned all electronic devices from commercial flights because smug jerks like this can't follow instructions. They should have banned him from flying for two years!
Ha! Love it!
I'm an aircraft mechanic and I can say with complete peace of mind that your basic, everyday devices that are allowed on commercial flights are going to do absolutely jack shit to the aircraft. The "rule" to turn off or switch to airplane mode is pure rubbish.
Give me a fucking break the FAA makes you turn shit off in case something happens they can make up any fucking story about the incident they want
You can have handheld devices turned on and not stowed provided it's in airplane mode. Nothing is preventing you from capturing video during takeoff and landing. Why don't people understand the basics of how technology works?
Because There Fucking People? What a No it all!
Although electronics can't physically take down airplanes there is something called magnetic deviation which causes the aircraft's navigation equipment and instruments to act funky due to the magnetic fields given off by electronics.
Commensencemgtow That would be "Because THEY'RE Fucking People? What a KNOW it all!"
You MAD BRUH?
Actually filming could be a very useful device for the NTSB to discover the cause of crash. Many times a witness on the ground shot a video of a plane going down. Shooting a video on a plane could be even more useful.
Southwest 737 exactly my thoughts
ive put it in "airplane mode" on my video and recorded takeoffs and lan dings without incident like this. idk why some get hassled and some do not.
That's exactly what they don't want imo
pretty much
But if the plane crashes, the ipad would be destroyed anyway.
Anyone else catch how she said " Evidence by A , video of the PLANES being sucked into the engine" at 1:41 LOL

It is CNN after all.
Based on the video evidence, the plane was clearly sucked into the engine. CNN is always right.
well its woman afterall. cant expect them to do things right
Meanwhile, we have WiFi on airplanes XD
thats only after take off and before landing
no shit its the connection to the internet pinging off the towers thats the problem.
The reason they don't let you use large electronics during takeoff and landing is that in the event of a mishap/crash, the device can become a projectile! Also, if you use cell data, there is an annoying sound on the radios! Nothing crash causing, it is just annoying for the pilots.
Ryan No it isn't any longer that went out with analog phones.
+MrPielover61 so if the plane crashes they don't want projectiles hitting people on the sidewalks after the the crash?
@nunya biznez
Personal electronic devices rules were actually implemented very good reasons there are good reason for them to last as long as they did. And if you're busy with your phone or video camera trying to get that perfect video to put up on Facebook while getting an engine full of geese and you come down still twisted up looking out the window you can get a nice broken neck :-)
If you see a bunch of birds getting sucked into your airplane tell the first crew member you can possibly get the attention of. And then pay attention the crew because you are now the local expert on what just happened and where. How many birds which engines that sort of thing.
Fly safe!

Birds don’t have ailerons though
She an idiot. Fumbled her words the whole interview
superslim121 I certainly agree with you, but that is NON ENGLISH.
"If these devices are that dangerous then the FAA has a responsibility to ban them [or take stronger action to stop their use]"
I totally agree with this, that seems like a valid argument.
The pilots use electronics during takeoff
So the rule is stupid and should be abolished immedietely, but the pilot in command has the final say to what happens on that flight - the cabin crew are an extension of the pilot. Even if FAA had zero guidelines on it, it's within the pilot's right to tell people to do whatever he likes onboard an airplane.
The rule is stupid, but the pilot and cabin crew are the authority you must listen to unless you want to be dropped off 300 miles from your destination.

Why??? How hard is it to follow simple instructions!!!

I've never heard of any documented cases of personal electronics actually interfering with aircraft operations. This whole thing is absurd.
Does it hurt to be too careful when you're responsible for over a hundred lives?
They simply said "No..There's nothing wrong about it."
oh well if you havent heard of it then thats the whole thing disproven right there, because it would be reported to you wouldnt it?

Presumably the FAA class tablets as laptops? The same safety (not interference) issues may apply with an iPad flying round the cabin as a laptop
This incident occurred in 2012. FAA changed their rules the following year to allow for portable electronics.
The rules are still in effect, but barely.
You can still record videos and take pictures while your device is on airplane mode.
I want to hear Jordan Peterson talk about the agreeability of this anchor in purple.

Phones can't take down air planes.
Country logic or surface-to-air missiles would be made of phones.
Older ones can
No. Older, analog phones *might* have caused an issue. Maybe. Sort of. Not really.
So just abide to what you’re flight attendant say to you
planes sucked into the engine?
No birds
She said planes at one point lol
maybe we should turn off birds before takeoff
just picture birds as small planes that are alive and eat.
Heh, I heard the same thing.
Julian Mcclellan You are a Banter King 👍🏽
None of these devices are dangerous to aircraft. That is why you are now permitted to use them in flight.
the reason that was explained to me by a flight attendant for why we have to turn off our electronics, is that takeoff and landings are the most likely times for something to go wrong. airlines don't want us to be distracted by a pair of headphones in case emergency instructions have to be told to the passengers. however, they still let you read books and talk to the people sitting around you during takeoff and landing so there's definitely a double standard. but it's not really that big a deal for me to turn off my phone twice for half an hour.
thats for their lawyer if they have a crash. Its pure bullshit.
Sad that people can't turn off their fucking phone for 10 mins.
The pilots have their iPads on during takeoff
they use it strictly for aviation purposes only, its illegal for the pilots to be using electronic devices for non-flight operations in any commercial flight
I remember back in the day when you weren't legally allowed to have electronics on during flight below 10,000 feet. Glad we are not in those times anymore, such a huge myth.
no back then too many electronic devices actually interfered with navigation equipment on the aircraft.
@@CrimsonThunderSB Trust me, if these devices really did any danger to an airplane, you would not be allowed to carry them onboard.
I always film the takeoff... sometimes time-lapse the landings..... fuck that rule.
Id throw you off mid flight. Watch you get sucked in to the engine.
Yes but, their rules apply. Our only choice is to respect them or not fly.

The law of the jungle, big plane eats small plane.

“Listen, I’ll follow the rules, but only if I personally think they are good rules”. What a tool
I listen to and follow crew instructions. I still would like to know, Why is "put away your electronic devices" a legitimate directive? Why are flight attendants forced to enforce the FAA directive, which is apparently bogus, when flight crews use such devices throughout the trip?
Stephen Zumbo pilots fly with ipads on their yokes or kneeboards With foreflight running while passengers take pics with their iPhone's don't they?
With modern communication technologies, the Tenerife disaster would have been avoided (not that it would not have been avoided by following the rules at that time, just leading to a delay, of which they were under pressure to gain back anyway…)
Frequency bands exist for a reason, and cellphones cannot, even with extensive low level hacking, transmit at frequencies used by aviation.
1:01 "Pee for papa"
So is it ok to use an android device?
rastawet yes cus Android is better
Isaac Cool android isnt a phone, its a operating software. its basically the girl that gets passed around at the parties. "androids" arent any better, its all about the company. samsung is the only apple competitor. its not android vs apple, its samsung vs apple...
Kakashi Hidden Bape Village but Samsung is not the only manufacturer.
PS I know Android is an OS
If I had a dollar for every time the FAA determined a cellphone had caused a plane to crash.
The birds were guided into the engine by the phone, WAIT DOES THIS MEAN I CAN CONTROL FUCKING BIRDS, FUCKING BIRDS!!!
No one said that birds were guided into the engine by the phone.
Oh my God! I can't believe how far I had to scroll before I found one other person who understood this basic fact!
You are 100% correct.
I think we should sue the FAA for treating people like a bunch of idiots.
That's like telling him don't use a blanket because it affects the plane..like what is that
Marino De Jesus
What's not all he did.
The video clip is not showing his behaviour before or after he was filming the birds.
It's just because of this behaviour he was told off as I have earlier explained.
filmtajm35 well if that is true then yes he would have deserve the letter
Filmtajm35, dont start to compare taking a video and running in the isle on takeoff, they are two vastly different things. Recording a video isn't a safety hazard, its not putting anyone at risk...
I totally understand that, but.... I'm a special douchebag.
90% of Americans have an iPhone? That doesn't sound right.
If a phone could potentially take down a plane, we should not allow phones on planes. Ever. Clearly this is not a safety issue.
The best response is to say it was in Airplane Mode, which doesnt affect recording video. SIMPLE
Grant is on point, he is 100% right
my phone still takes video during 'airplane mode'. Flight attendants usually just tell us to put it on airplane mode, not to shut it off
Imagine 50 passengers blocking your exit taking selfies while you trying to exit a burning aircraft....
Why do Americans feel that iPhone is the only smartphone in existence
"Airplane Mode" is acceptable on every commercial aircraft I've ever flown on. Not required to power down.
Did he really say 90 percent of all people in America have an iPhone? Someone is delusional
FAA does not report publicly the recorded birdstrikes. It is confidentially tracked. They don't want the public educated about bird strikes.
For the record, the FAA's regulations don't say shit about being able to record with an iPad if you're a passenger. Hell, the exact wording of every safety briefing on every flight I've ever been on is as follows:
"At this time, we ask that you power down and stow any laptops and other large electronics. You may continue to use your handheld devices that have been placed in airplane mode..."
You can still take videos on airplane mode. You don’t need wifi. The faa is dumb
Now Grant fly on his own private jet. And laugh at the FAA because he has his iPad on all the time.
they would ban phones like they ban water bottles if it's remotely dangerous.
I just lost 10 brain cells for every word that lady said
Even if it wasn't in Airplane Mode, a phone does not actually interfere with the plane. They just use it as an excuse to get people to listen to safety instructions at the beginning of the flight.
the only reason airlines tell people to pack away their devices is so they can pay attention to the safety briefings and be ready for an emergency during departure and landing.
Don't pilots WANT video proof of damage to their airplane as PROOF that it was NOT the pilots' FAULT that the engine caught fire or failed?
The faa applies to ridergoers not passengers.
"That's my little daughter's pee..."
*wat*
"...for papa"
oh
This dude is a national hero ..you see how he caught those birds ...come on man.....he should fly free
The reason they ask you turn off your electronic devices is because they want passengers to pay attention to instructions.
They actually ask passengers to put the device in airplane mode.
Simply put … the FAA once again had there heads up their asses over nothing !
1:42 she says...''evidence by - A- the video of the planes being sucked into the engine which''..... Apparently CNN has not taught this newscaster the difference between birds and planes.
The flight companies didn't want evidence of the bird strike!
90% of Americans do not an iPhone. Maybe 90% own a smartphone
The FAA doesn't regulate this. Each airline decides for itself what devices can be on during flight. There is NO law that says turn off your phone in flight.
The iPad caused the birds to fly into the engines. That's why you aren't allowed to have electronic devices on. Geez.
This man have no idea how important the critical phase of flight is
The flight attendants don't even turn their phones off..
“Hey I drive 120 mph every day and i aint hitting anything yet. Why should i follow those traffic rule.”
Meanwhile, air crew are notorious for checking in with their loved ones, etc. at the same time they're telling passengers to turn off their electronic devices.
It’s a federal law. If you don’t like it, contact your congressman and see if it can be changed - but don’t ignore it.
I’d be scared to fly if they have any reason to think an electronic device can crash a plane.
