You have to understand the depth of the scene when the dad gets drunk. He is listening to Moby Dick. A book about a captain’s obsession with a white whale that goes on for years. Ahab ravages his crew on a seemingly endless vendetta. Like Captain Ahab’s crew, His father is unable to, “Stop the Ship!!” It Is symbolic of the devastation that has occurred within his own family and he is helpless to fix
@@joshuanowlin443 I read it a long time ago but I needed a dictionary next to me. Powerful book. If it doesn’t teach you about not following hopeless causes, I don’t know what will!
I've not gotten around to reading it (used to read a ton during middle school and previous. But I never read this, stuck to non fiction history books), but I have a beautiful copy I got from my old got available for when I move out and "retire" or a really rainy week. But I know the tale from my interest in sea lore, life and history especially Pre/Age of Sail. But we were dealing with my best (now ex best) friend and what we thought was his drinking problem when this was in theatre. Plus I was going through a really funky phase with liquor too. So this is the only time in my life I actually caught myself from my eyes welling up and starting to cry in public at a movie. Was with my brother, dad and our buddy. Credit for any movie that can illicit that kind of emotion from and audience member.
man, I cried so much from this film. It reminded me of the relationship with my little brother, I grew up in a private school and later moved away while he attended a public school and stayed with my mother. We grew up differently and Tom Hardy's character reminded me of him so much, the resentment, the abandonment and later the hatred when i last saw him. In the end of the victory scene, I cried a lot because in the end..I love my little brother to death but will never understand what he had to go through to be where he is right now. I don't know where he is now, but I wish him the best and hopefully he knows that one day. This film gets an A+ from me.

Tommy's best friend got killed in combat and he went AWOL. He saved the guys in the tank while he was on the run. He was torn apart inside but he wanted to help his best friend's family so he got into the championship. Brendan was torn too, and was about to lose everything so he finagled his way into the championship. Edgerton, Hardy, and Nolte's greatest roles at the same time. I hate that this movie flew under the radar like it did. Truly a masterpiece. It never gives you a moment to catch your breath and the reveals come at the perfect moments. Triumph of the human spirit. It's not about winning. It's about getting back up no matter what and trying to redeem your past...and your present. Tommy and Brendan are exactly the opposite, but at the same time they're exactly the same. Incredible movie. Great reaction, Devin.
Maaaaan I'll never forget the first time I watched this movie. I was on a plane, and had no clue what it was about. I like your compassion and understanding, how you read the scenes, no need to explain anything. The characters are relatable and the family issues are very deep... but you knew, all of them were hurting. This movie hit me so hard in so many ways. From the family dynamic, the way they grew up, my time in the service, the battles I had to fight when I got out. The part where Nick Nolte was drunk and screaming in his face, it could have just as easily been my father. And it's funny because when this film first came out I identified a lot more with Tommy, but fast forward to now, I'm married and have three kids ... I have so much respect for everything Brendan was trying to do for his family.
Grats on your first sponsor, Dev! Real proud of you! It's been a long time since your Breaking Bad reactions, and I'd like to say you've really come a long way. Keep on doin' what you're doin', and stay true to yourself. Love ya, bro.
Awesome movie - Tom Hardy is really compelling in this role. I feel like there's nothing he can't play. You should watch The Drop next or for an older one, please do G.I. Jane (not sure if you've done that one already). Also, great news on the sponsor Devin. Congrats!
such a great movie. so much more than just a movie about fighting. everyone has their inner demons and struggles. family should be the people we can count on the most to be there for us, and when they aren't, it hurts more than anything.
SUCH an underrated movie. When I saw this I wasn't expecting much. It blew me away, especially Tom Hardy as Tommy. And, of course, Nick Nolte who's always great.
This movie is on my top 10 list.. girls cry for The Note Book and I cried so hard at the end of this movie so that my girlfriend came up asking me what've happened (at this time my father were going through cancer treatment and she thought I've got bad news regarding it). Nick Nolte were nominated for an oscar for best supporting role if I don't remember it wrong.. such an amazing movie even if you doesn't have any interest in MMA.. if you do (as I have) it just scales up... Ugly cry number 1: Nolte screams at captain Ahab. Ugly cry number 2 (and also shaking): "I love you"..
I absolutely loved this movie! Loved your reaction. This movie is so underrated; it has so many layers to it. Very solid acting from everybody but especially Nick Nolte and Tom Hardy.
You were right on the money with Brendan and Tommy's dad being drunk and physically abusive... Tommy makes that bitter remark about how hard it is to find a woman who can take a punch? Oof. It was miraculous that they had a relationship at all. Even their fighting styles reflected how they deal with the trauma. Tommy goes through it like a buzzsaw, like said in the movie, all attack and bludgeoning, which is all the more tragic since his father pushed him to be a great wrestler when he was in high school. Brendan's style instead is that grappling, ground-work, and deflection, evasion, and entrapping his opponents... using physics, hilariously enough, to work against them! Such a great movie, thank you, always happy to see someone new covering it. And don't be ashamed of those tears, this is a manly tears movie all the way.
I've watched this movie soo many times and cried. And even watching this I got emotional af. Only men will understand amd relate to this. The dad and 2 sons all hate each other. Shows 3 types of damage men face but we still have to deal with it by ourselves. Stay strong fellas

I love the fact you forget its a movie and get immersed into the story. Amazing story. It was sad to se their broken relationship, the old man couldn't catch a break, but you could see in his expression that even he couldn't forgive himself. Yes, check out Lawless. One of the all time great American stories...it was uniquely written by NIck Cave the musician and Matt Bondurant (descendant of the original Bondurant brothers), but they managed to wrangle some great actors for the film, Tom Hardy, Guy Pierce, Shia LeBeouf, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Dane DeHaan and Gary friggin' Oldman as the legendary bootleggin' gangster Floyd Banner. Fantastic movie about three moonshining brothers refusing to bow to corrupt law enforcement.
OH it makes sense that it took so long for the father to get cleaned up. It’s easier to dig into ones addictions that are causing the problems than to give them up and acknowledge the pain caused to oneself and others.
This is a great movie, but if there is one thing I wanted to see more than anything, is how Tommy would've matched up against Koba. That would have been an epic brawl.
I looooved this movie so much & I didn't know who Tom Hardy was before this movie but been in love with him ever since. His fight scenes always look so real to me. Great movie, great reaction! I understood the older brothers side absolutely but I definitely felt for Tommy a lot more.

I have brothers, both older and younger. And this movie makes me bawl like a baby everytime. I love my brothers to the ends of the universe. I would gladly give my life for them and I cannot imagine my life without them.
I had such a similar reaction to this film. Growing up with an alcoholic father I know all to well the dysfunction and hardship that brings to the family. Amazing movie, Tom Hardy did a phenomenal job.
This film hits me every time! I don’t consider it a fighting film. I have always considered it a film about 2 brothers in a fighting setting. My brother and I did indeed train in martial arts for many years, but it’s not why I relate to this film. It is because my brother and I went through a hard falling out. I can’t explain the feeling when we had it out and reconciled. I’ve never taken being a big brother for granted again. I loved this reaction!

One thing about this film is that it’s the definitive MMA Rocky. Even takes place in Philly, and it’s self aware of that
Hey Devin, someone else already mentioned it, but Lawless is a fantastic and HIGHLY underrated movie starring Tom Hardy. Well worth a watch!
Мне очень нравится Том Харди в этом фильме. Мне кажется он один из лучших британских актеров. Моё мнение. Он шикарный актер в любой роли. Талантливый мистер Харди ❤❤❤
This movie is so underrated. As somebody that enjoys watching MMA/UFC, I enjoyed the cameo appearances of real MMA fighters. Love your reaction on this one.
Man that was one of the best movies i've seen in a long time. You grow up with brothers, I think I really could relate to this movie. Never thought I would say that about a fight movie. Great reaction my dude.
FUN FACT: Koba (the "Big Dog") is being played by Olympic Gold Medalist and WWE legend, Kurt Angle.
