Love your nod to Eric Jones! He is one classy, savvy, skilled performer. Rick, thank you for the material that you've published. You, too, are an excellent teacher. All best wishes!
I have to agree completely with you. I started with Eric Jones’ “Metal” series and then David Roth’s phenomenal 3 DVD instructional series. (R.I.P. David Roth, never got to meet him but he inspired me so much!). I then got “Bobo’s” and other books. But I don’t think you can truly understand a retention vanish until you see a talented coin worker do it first.
I was a volunteer for a Bobo show when I was around 8, so I have a soft spot for him, and I own some Bobo ephemera. I also managed to get the original (reprint) and the expanded. That said I get where you're coming from.
I bought bobo's old version for like $10 a day before finding your channel. For me, buying the book was more of a deliberate action I could take that says "I am officially a coin magician and today is the first day of that journey". I had a book as a kid that was about card magic, and I wanted to learn card magic back then but I always hated reading the book and trying to figure out based on pictures. I figure my experience with bobo's will be the same. I'm glad to have found your channel and I've been practicing your drill and I've been looking at a lot of youtube people to compare styles on the same moves like the french drop and stuff. Thanks for making your videos!
I’ve been fortunate enough to see Eric Jones perform in person while also photographing his table to table performances. He’s now a friend of mine. I’m not surprised that you have mentioned him in multiple videos as his work is the very definition of finesse. I say all of this because he’s not just a great magician, he’s an incredible human being. I hope you don’t mind that I told him about you referring to him. I got too excited 😂 keep up the incredible work, Rick! Out of all of the coin tutorial channels, yours is by far the best
I don't mind at all! Eric was a huge influence on me early on. I got a chance to meet him in Charlotte NC in 2009. Ive messaged him on and off over the years, so he knows who I am.
@@RickHolcombe when I told him about your mentions he said the same thing, that he met you one time and called you a great guy. If he says someone is a great guy, he means it. Nothing like finding out someone you really respect in a specific field, respects another person that you really respect in that field. Thanks for replying!
Thank you Rick for you videos, especially this one! I needed good honest recommendations to get started in coin magic and I found it in your video. I have since purchased some of the recommended videos and working through them along side my coin magic books.
I bought j.b. Bobo’s coin magic due to a recommendation by chris Ramsey. The book can come off as archaic at times. And I found myself stuck a lot. I then found on eBay, a bundle from magic makers, Modern Coin Magic 2008(4dvdset) and Royal Road to card magic 2015(4dvdset) make an offer price of $15.00! For that price so worth it! These were so helpful. One issue with the videos, they are a little old as well, and not all of us are wearing an oversized suit coat with large sleeve openings, or pants with cuffs! 😉 so not all material is applicable.
from Bangladesh, maybe i cant bye those book😢, ( in Bangladesh, there is no magic shop) but will always support you to improve myself in coin magic❤❤ you are my inspiration from now on. wish you all the best for you are upcoming days.... 😊 can you make a video about classic palm, i am struggling to get perfect look..... 😅
I got David Roth's beginning video but I don't have the whole set. He was also funny. He did this trick with a woman sitting at the table and at the conclusion of the trick she says in amazement, "Oh my God!" David says, "Please, call me David."
This makes a lot of sense. Perfect video for me who are thinking I should start learning some coins. However, there is a video series on bobo, showing the different moves that i assume is a great companion to the book. With that in mind, would you still recommend doing it in the order you suggested in this video? 🙂
Thanks man! Love your channel, by the way. My main point in making this particular video was that this book is regarded as "The Bible" yet it is missing a LOT of coin magic that was available at the time. It is still an excellent encyclopia of coin magic, but it is not the best place to start for a beginner. The other, broader point, was that a beginner should begin with video because it is much faster and easier to comprehend the sleights and routines. So, any video will probably help you faster than just reading the book.
@@RickHolcombe Wow, thanks a lot, I'm honoured! 🙏 And likewise, I've only watched a few of your videos so far and I'm super inspired to start learning some coin stuff! Sounds like two very good points. When it comes to cards I'm usually a book person, but I didn't feel the same way when I started reading Bobo the other night. I'll follow your advice and get the basics down by watching the Roth DVDs and channels such as yours, and then get to books when I'm feeling more confident. Thanks again 🙏😀
I love your videos on one coin and 2 coin drills. But there are other books that teach very easy coin tricks. Mark Wilson, comes to mind. Jon Tremaine's the Amazing Book of Magic has "amazing" tricks in it. Also Nicholas Einhorn's the Illustrated compendium of magic has some awesome tricks in, but you are right, you need to have Bobo. The techniques get much more complicated as you explain. Unfortunately, I am still working on your 1 and 2 coin drills...They are a bit more challenging than one might think.
Rick, just wanted to thank you for your help! One question… do you have a tutorial on one of your favorite techniques, the “DeMons Change” (sp?). Kind regards.
Thanks! It's always nice to hear my videos are helping people. The move you're interested in is called the "DeManche Change" from a french magician Henri DeManche. I cover that move in this video ua-cam.com/video/jKgoSAWp4C8/v-deo.htmlsi=jsoSPOjTBwGdeSU6
When I bought Bobo 20 year ago I found It incomprehensible. I read It again after studyng Roth's videos and I started understand It and find gems. It Is like math, you cant understand calculus if you dont study arithmetic first.
Yes, you're right. The main point I wanted to get across was to learn from ANY video resource before going to Bobo's. You can get the Roth DVDs at Vanishing Inc. or Penguin along with many others.
I hate to differ, but the second (Magic Inc,) version of MCM does not contain anything that usefu.Aside from a few ilustrations of gaff coins that you don't need until you buy the gaff, or after you buy the gaff for that matter.
Great video for beginners, Thanks Rick. Coin magic can and IS daunting. And that is part of its charm. I Also started with Bobo, and quickly put it back in the shelf while I kept learning easier automatic card tricks. My first video was " In the begining there where coins" by Jay Noblezada. Nothing ground breaking but informative enough to ease you in. After that Roth. I would also like to mention some resources in SPANISH, there are 2 books: MONEDAS BLANDAS by Armando de Miguel and MONEDAS INCRESCENDO By Manuel Cuesta. Both are beginner to mid-level books. Good place to start if you are looking for literature in Spanish.
Thank you Dani! I probably should have compiled a more formal list of all that is out there, but the main point I wanted to get across is that while Bobo's is a good starting point you'll be better off with ANY video that teaches palms etc. just for the fact that you can SEE instead of decipher text and illustration.
Love your nod to Eric Jones! He is one classy, savvy, skilled performer. Rick, thank you for the material that you've published. You, too, are an excellent teacher. All best wishes!
Thanks!
Can't agree more about Eric Jones. Fantastic teaching on Metal 1. He and Rick have been the most helpful to a beginner.
I’ve been doing coin magic for 45 years and I am loving your channel good job brother!
Glad you enjoy it!

Great video and thank you for making it alright for us beginners to find Bobo a bit confusing.

I'm Old School, so I LIKE how you point out the beauty of the "completeness".

Glad to have you here. Be cautious out there, a lot of people teaching bad information and bad habits.
Another amazing resource is Michael Rubinstein’s. 3 DVd set Enc of coin magic. WELL worth owning and as well, a great teacher
I'm starting to get into coins and your channel is a godsend!
Thanks man! I need to get back to a regular schedule

Rick, your intro video sequence is incredible. I like what you’re doing. Totally agree about this book. It is old, same as Expert Card Technique
Thanks so much! Glad to see you back making videos!
Would love it if could teach the muscle pass.
Lots and lot and lots of practice.
I have been wathcing a couple of videos and they have been great. It will bee intresting following your channel.

Glad I could help
Great video. I really like how you mentioned Curtis Kam's book, which I didn't know about. Subscribed!
P.S. Spending a Sunday afternoon with your videos and a pocketful of coins is awesome!
Card magician here looking to branch into coin magic.
Thanks for your videos. Very informative and helpful. Subbed👌

Hey Rick! You and Jeff Copeland should get together and put together a “ Coin College” set of resources - printed and video!

Thank you my friend. I will try to make more beginner videos
My first coin magic book was Shigeo Futagawas “Introduction to Coin Magic”!
I got David Roth's beginning video but I don't have the whole set. He was also funny. He did this trick with a woman sitting at the table and at the conclusion of the trick she says in amazement, "Oh my God!" David says, "Please, call me David."

One of good coin magician is also Jey sankey,he got good videos about coin magic.
Great video (as always), but it would have been nice if you included links to each in the info section.

Where can I buy the Roth Videos? They don't seem to be available. Some sites offer to sell the download.
Is there a coin version of expert at the card table?
Bobo's is probably the closest comparison. There's just a lot missing from it that the author chose to exclude.

sir no I am really confused as a beginner what stuff of coin magic should I study.
Why not get the older version? The older version is also called new modern coin magic
The old version is just titled "Modern Coin Magic" but it is very affordable and available in paperback.
Can you teach the muscle pass?
I just might do that!
Please! Also the fingertip version when you could..
What is the difference between your copy of Bobo and the version put out by Dover?
4 new chapters and 100 new tricks
Ah! Thank you. That would make a difference.
Ah! Thank you. That would make a difference.
Ah! Thank you. That would make a difference.
Actually the muscle pass is in Bobo but it's not called the muscle pass
💯💯
What's price the book📕??
Around $35 depending where you find it
I am beginner love video
I never recommend this book for the beginner. Video is much better for starting coin magic
Ok sar
Magic books are way too confusing for coin sleights lol
So….what you’re saying is watch & learn from everyone… but get, read, & learn from Bobo. Yup.
Just don't start with Bobo.
