With the self-produced groups, instead of looking like their songs "happened to them," you can tell they own it.

It is not unusual that someone who likes a b side track from Stray Kids more than the title track. I agree with you friend that Stray Kid doesn't want to box in the same structure every time. They dare to leave their comfort zone to try new thing. Just you know, a lot of Stays (fans) love La La La La even if you are disappointed a little bit. You just can't keep on winning Billboard 200 with same structure and formula.

Stray Kids collab with LiSA is not random at all! A few of the Stray Kids members, including some of the producing unit are huge anime fans and LiSA is an icon to them...

I thought Lalalala was such a masterpiece, I enjoyed way more than I did SClass but I understand what you were saying, the more deep you dig into their music you'll realize that in fact they do NOT have a structured formula for their music, they dive into all genres going so far as to create their own genre in KPop. Their creativity and talent is outstanding and they own everything they do. Thank you for listening to Stray kids they're are so many other sides of their music to enjoy and their B side tracks are so amazing!! ❤️

self produced groups got this feeling of being confident in their sound and performance, no one is making them sing something they don't feel comfortable with, which actually happens quite often...

Felix is the magnet that draws new fans in but as you get to know them better you grow to appreciate all 8 members, each member brings their own spice to this beautiful core that is Stray Kids. Please watch the 2023 guide to get to know the other members besides Felix, they are all amazing. Understand who 3Racha, DanceRacha and VocalRacha are.
To the one that is disappointed in La La La La, please listen to the rock version which is on the same album. Many people (me included) prefer it. As for me, when I first heard this song my initial thought was (how can they do better and better, it’s unbelievable) so it’s hard for me to understand what you mean. Like they said in God’s Menu, they make songs to suit everyone’s taste, if one doesn’t do it for you, another one will. For me, all their songs do it for me. There is only one other group from Korea that did the same thing for me 2nd generation BIGBANG, and in the west it’s Linkin Park. Don’t get me wrong, I like many groups but only those 3 managed to hit me with every song they made.

Just started the video but, a thoughtful SKZ reaction with a side of g-idle appreciation? sign me up!
Edit: Honestly you're in the minority! S-Class received very extreme reactions, people either LOVED it or HATED it (many made this song the manifesto of their distaste for "noise" music). On the other hand, from what I've seen Lalalala has been highly prased across the board, and it's been their first hit to entered the Billboard Hot 100.
The reason it strays from their usual title-track "feel" is because it was originally intended as a b-side, however while recording they loved it so much that they wanted to promote it, so to say. Personally I'm very glad they did, it's up there with my favorite tracks and I found very interesting the use phonk in a kpop song, but I understand why someone who loved S-Class might have thought something was missing.
    Great reaction!

It’s pretty understandable to mix up Changbin and Bang Chan. Their names are super similar, they’re both rappers. Personally, I had the hardest time keeping them straight when I was first getting into Stray Kids. But Bang Chan (the one you remember from that video with the girl from TWICE) is the actual leader of the group, and he is also the one who is super well connected in the k-pop world because he was a trainee for so long before debuting.

You were right the second time about Bang Chan (orange hair) being the leader! He (along with Changbin and Han) write/produce all their music. And stray kids are already deep in the multiverse!!! Starting from their very first album all the music videos are very lore heavy and show SKZ in different dimensions and alternate versions of themselves. They even have a 10 minute long short film that plays in to it. And the preview videos they put out for each album is always lore heavy. It’s a whole rabbit hole to go down! There’s SKZ and their clones though and throughout their discography and music videos they travel dimensions. Also at the end of megaverse, Tablo is the other security guard who came in and he wrote his name in the crossword with stray kids! He’s a really famous rapper from Epik High and this is hinting at a collab! The message for the megaverse MV is the first guard disrespected SKZ by doodling on them in the newspaper. They show up through the megaverse to make him pay and basically attack him with the music, you’ll notice it’s always the beat drop that makes him go flying. And SKZ keep morphing into each other because if you mess with one of them you mess with all of them, they are a solid, united, force!

Social path feat LiSA is a very emotional song for Bang Chan (leader of the group) as he talks about everything he endured to achieve his goals and dreams. Stray Kids have Japanese songs as well so it made sense to collaborate with her as they are both huge in their respective genres. I'm obsessed with social path! ❤️

Felix (deep voice) has a really nice falsetto too. His range is insane.
    They debuted in 2018
    They are ages 22 - 26
They are unique for several reasons...
First, the leader Bang Chan (red hair in Backdoor) was allowed by JYP to hand pick all of the members himself. They were not placed together in a traditional way, by the company.
Second all of them are all arounders. They can all sing, rap, dance, produce and write.
Third, they have written and produced about 99% of their music.
Numbers of songs each member has copyrighted according to Korean Music Association numbers so far...
    KOMCA numbers...
Bang Chan 180 (#3 in KPop)
    Changbin 152 (#11)
    Han 148 (#12)
    Hyunjin 22
    Felix 21
    Seungmin 19
    I.N 19
    Lee Know 17
While they can all do everything they do have 3 different subunits...
3Racha... Bang Chan, Chang Bin and Han which are the main producers. They are always credited as 3Racha.
3Racha just won their first award for their production and writing work. They won Asian Artists Awards Best Creator.
Danceracha... Lee Know (he is a former backup dancer for BTS and in charge of leading dance practices), Felix and Hyunjin
    Vocalracha... Seungmin and I.N
While the songs are hype they always have significant meaning to them. Their lyricism is always insane.
Since they are so experimental their sound has its own genre and they have a very diverse discography.
Example... Gods Menu, Back Door and Case 143 all completely different sounds.
Bangchan is the one you're thinking of. He was a trainee for 7 years, training with the likes of groups like Twice and others. He knows and is loved by everyone in the industry because of not only work ethic and his insane talent but how humble and respectful he is.

I do find it amusing that their 'japanese' song is 75% english. Though I guess it's classed by the market it's released for rather than its language. I do see some people calling the original release of Superbowl (100% english) the 'korean version' because it was released on their korean album. Anyway, Social Path was mostly written by Bang Chan (the leader) about his time as a kpop trainee. He moved to korea by himself at age 13 to pursue his dream. Throughout the next 7 years, he watched all his friends either debut, leave or get cut. He's said he considered quitting many times, but ultimately he stuck it out and was basically given his own group so 'no regrets'.

At first I didn’t understand what you meant about LaLaLaLa sounding like another song but it made sense when you explained you were comparing it to S-Class. S-Class is one of my favorite title tracks of theirs. After hearing it for the first time my first thought was that I wanted a version that was 7 minutes long with even more genre mixing. Songs that you have to listen to multiple times to catch everything are really my taste and the switch-ups they did were super cool. I also really liked the song “O.O” by NMIXX for similar reasons and was surprised at how much criticism it was getting at the time. Although I prefer songs like that, I still really enjoyed LaLaLaLa- maybe because I expected it to sound like it did?
Since their debut, they have released “Intro” videos before the release of each album where the members explain the musical direction of the upcoming album and the meaning, production process, etc. behind each track. In the “Rock-Star” intro they stated that the purpose of their previous album (5-Star) was to put all of their effort into producing a certain standard of music, whereas with this album they just wanted to show a more free, unfiltered version of Stray Kids. They compared Rock-Star to God’s Menu era in terms of the feelings they were trying to convey with the songs. They specifically said that unlike S-Class which was lighter and genre mixing, LaLaLaLa would focus on powerful performance and stage presence, so I kind of went into it expecting the song to keep the same energy throughout like God’s Menu. They also said in the intro that instead of the intensity going from 0 to 100 they wanted it to go from 100 to 200 and it accomplished that for me.
I think it avoids being too repetitive as we only get the chorus twice. In their title tracks they often do the chorus 3 times, but have it be shorter or slightly different the 2nd or 3rd time. For Lax4, after the 2nd pre-chorus it jumps directly to the bridge before the chorus repeats (similar to God’s Menu) but it is at a higher intensity and is followed by an even more intense outro in double time. For me, the only truly repetitive Stray Kids title track is “Miroh” but that’s okay because it’s a banger. Their most recent tours have been with a live band so I would love to see the rock version of Lax4 live with a live band.
Sorry for the long comment. I really enjoyed this reaction and I think we have a similar taste in music so I will definitely check out more!

i totally agree with you in terms of the difference between LA4 and S-CLASS. i think they also wanted to get a mini-album release before the end of the year, since 5STAR was a full studio album. they're had so many commitments this year, including a couple members becoming ambassadors for luxury brands. on top of that, they were a headline performance at Lollapalooza Paris AND Global Citizen's festival in between S-CLASS promotion and LA4 comeback preparation. for LA4 to still be as good as it is, you can tell they put in 110% into their careers. we've actually been begging JYPE to give them a break, even if chan admitted he really didn't want to rest. they've been nonstop for so long 😭 sorry for the mini-rant. but yes, i think they struggled this year to split the time amongst all of their other activities. 2024 tour rumors are brewing as well on top of this. hopefully they pull back on the amount of schedules to wind down though

In case you want to learn more about Stray Kids.........
3Racha - Stray Kids' main writing and production unit, consisting of Bang Chan (the leader of Stray Kids), Changbin and Han
They formed as a rap group before Stray Kids formed, and wrote and produced their own music. When the final members for Stray Kids were chosen, 3Racha was absorbed into the group. They write and produce the vast majority of the music for Stray Kids. But all 8 members have written music for the group, and a few of the members (besides 3Racha) are now also producing some of the songs.
    ----------------------------------
Stray Kids debuted in 2018. They started out with 9 members (so in their early videos, you'll see 9 people performing) but Woojin left in Oct 2019 and Stray Kids have been an 8-member group ever since.
    ----------------------------------
Bang Chan, Changbin and Han still perform as 3Racha for certain awards shows and events, separately from Stray Kids. They also have several of their own songs / videos posted on UA-cam. The 3Racha members are highly prolific writers and producers and have started winning awards as such.
    ----------------------------------
DanceRacha - Stray Kids' main dance unit, consisting of Hyunjin, Felix, and Lee Know
    ----------------------------------
VocalRacha - their main vocal unit, consisting of Seungmin and I.N
    ----------------------------------
Main rappers - Changbin, Han, Hyunjin and Felix (the deep-voiced guy) - but unlike many K-pop groups, all 8 members can and have rapped, depending on the song.
    ----------------------------------
Vocalists......I listed their main vocal unit above, but again.....all 8 members have great singing voices and they switch around on lead vocals, depending on the song
    ----------------------------------
Dancers......main ones listed above, but all 8 members can dance very well
    ----------------------------------
    Languages:
Bang Chan (the leader of the group) and Felix (deep-voiced guy) are both Australian, so English is their first language. The other 6 members speak English with varying degrees of fluency.
All 8 members are fluent in both Korean and Japanese. The group can sing and rap in all three languages.
    ----------------------------------
Not all of their music is hard. They also sing beautiful ballads, have performed a number of songs for K-drama soundtracks, and have written / performed some songs for an anime called Tower of God. They also collaborate with / produce for other idol groups and individual singers from Korea, Japan, China, Thailand and the U.S.

    SECOND COMMENT:
    On the Megaverse video......
@21:36 in the elevator - that's Bang Chan, the leader and main writer / main producer of 3Racha (Stray Kids' main writing / production unit). He's the one who knows just about everyone in the K-pop /J-pop / C-pop industry, and has extensive contacts in the acting industry, too (he's friends with Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, etc). The man's phone must have a gazillion numbers in it. He's originally from Australia. He does a lot less rapping these days and is much more of a vocalist, now. He plays piano, guitar, ukulele and drums.
@23:34 coming out of the elevator (blue shirt, white drape-y thing on his head) - that's Changbin, main writer / producer for 3Racha and Stray Kids. He's one of their main rappers, but has a gorgeous singing voice, too. Changbin does a ton of dance challenges with other idols and is *very* popular with the girl groups when it comes to the dance challenges. I think he plays guitar, although I haven't seen him do so.
@23:40 coming out of the elevator (white shirt, blue vest) - that's HAN, main writer / producer for 3Racha and Stray Kids. He's one of their main rappers, but has a gorgeous singing voice and often sings lead vocals. He plays guitar (both acoustic and electric) and piano.
@23:49 - coming through the door (wearing a hoodie) - that's Seungmin, lead vocalist. He has written some their songs, and he's sung a few songs for K-drama soundtracks. His voice is amazing. He plays guitar and piano.
@23:54 - that's Lee Know, main dancer. Before he became an idol, he was on a hip-hop crew and was also a backup dancer that toured with BTS. He has a great singing voice and has written some songs for the group.
@23:58 - standing - that's Hyunjin, main dancer and one of their main rappers. He has written a number of songs for the group, and he's produced a few, too. He's a self-taught artist, specializing in drawing and painting. Fans hope he will, at some point, have an exhibit of his art. He's done some modeling and is currently a global ambassador for Versace. He plays piano.
@24:01 - that's Felix, one of their main dancers and rappers. He's considered to have one of the deepest, if not THE deepest, voices in K-pop (although in the Megaverse video, you're not really hearing his super deep voice), but he also has a gorgeous singing voice and can sing in different octaves. He's originally from Australia. He's also done some modeling and is a current house ambassador for Louis Vuitton.
@24:32 - that's I.N - the youngest of the group and one of their main vocalists with a unique sound. He considered becoming a priest when he grew up, but decided to try the idol thing first. He grew up singing traditional Korean trot music (it's a specific style of singing), so he already had some good foundational skills when he became a trainee. He plays piano and has written some songs for the group.

    Thanks for your reaction.
I really appreciate your honest reaction.
Talking about anime Ost Stray Kids did the ost for Tower of God called TOP and SLUMP which are the titles for the opening and ending and these two songs were fire. The Japanese versions are the original, they also did korean versions if I'm not mistaking and there's also a live version of SLUMP on a UA-cam channel call The First Take.
Yes, you are right, the second guy singing in megaverse is their leader and the oldest member of the group, he is Australian like Felix and his name is Bang Chan or simply Chan or Chris(for Christopher).
Everyone in the group is pretty much very popular but it sometimes hard to say who is more popular than the other apart from Hyunjin who is presently the global ambassador for Versace and Felix who is the house ambassador for Louis Vuitton (I can't really say who is more popular between these two but what is sure is both are super popular both home and internationally) follow by Lee Know and Chan but sometimes these two can switch positions on who is more popular and then follow the rest of the members Changbin(the social butterfly, you were right about him), Han(or Jisung),Seungmin and I.N(or Jeongin, he is the youngest of the group). In this case I'm definitely not able to classify them in order of popularity.
To conclude all I can say is all the member are pretty much very popular.
I hope in future you can also react to songs from their subunits especially 3Racha who have some bangers like 3racha,zone,we go, Hey day etc.
Stays please, don't hesitate to correct me if you think I'm wrong about anything.

Thanks for reating to Stray Kids. I fell down their rabbit hole a while back and it was the BEST! Funny thing was I had heard them first on an anime OST without knowing it - 'Top' and 'Slump' were the intro/outro of Tower of God. Slump remains one of my all time faves. You're right, being a self-produced group gives them a deeper, more organic feel. I often love their b-sides more than their title tracks because they seem to experiment more and cover more ground with their b-sides (which makes sense when you think about it). Social Path is really a bit heartbreaking when you look at the lyrics because Bang Chan gave up his youth to pursue his dream by going to Korea at 13 and being a trainee for 7 years before finally being able to debut with Stray Kids. I enjoyed the reparte' between you both during this long, but thoroughly enjoyable reaction. On a side note - as a Staytine (STAY for Stray Kids and ATINY for ATEEZ) I think you'll probably enjoy ATEEZ, too.

For some reason this is the first time hearing Back Door where I notice that the bassline sample they are using is one I think I recognize. (Måneskin's "ZITTI E BUONI", 90% sure, from the bridge of the song, about 2min in.) If I'm right, it's a good sample ^^

Very good observations! Yeah there is actually a multiverse story in some of the stray kids productions. The theories on it are wild. And since they are so good at acting on stage, they do a great job with actual acting. 😊 I think the most recent film is called Strayflix? I think people were explaining its currently a story that's like 2 to 5 videos long? I really enjoyed the short film honestly.
Also yes the one with the Orange hair, second introduction singer in Megaverse, is the leader. His stage name is BangChan. 😊 He's actually a highly respected and established song writer in Korea. I think he was #5 and now I think he's #3? He's also helped mentor others because I think he trained for 8 to 9 years before debut? Something like that. There's a solo artist that will usually thank him when he gets awards. 😊
I'm still researching myself but all of their information and journey is such a wild and respectable ride. I want to say it was 2 or 3 of them who weren't even camp trained before joining. Hyunjin being one of them. He was told many negative things and used it as fuel to become as skilled as he is now. He was doubted and ended up becoming Artist of the month for his dancing. His interpretive dance is very impressive. And in the victory stage performance he does a duel sword, sword dance. The ending of that performance seems to be a call back to the groups time on Kingdom. (T.V. show, its on UA-cam if you want to watch.)
Anyway loved your take on the observations. 😊
Oh and they do have videos of the making of the music videos. Very amusing to watch. 😂

I would have loved to see you guys react to Lalalala (the rock version) as metalheads to see if it changed your opinion of the track. Stray Kids released two versions of Lalalala - the one in this video is their title track and the rock version which is on their album and doesn't have an mv but that I think has more unique inspiration behind it. While I love this original version, I think the rock version is superior and should have been the title track but perhaps they were worried that such a complete genre shift would alienate their fans too much and so released two versions to satisfy both.
Stray kids loves experimenting and while the group has 3 members who mainly do production, in this album they allowed every member to have almost equal creative input from start to end. One of my favourite things since discovering stray kids is that I never know what they're going to do next. I would say their formula is the opposite of most groups' formula. Rather than try to recreate their old hits, they are always expanding and finding different inspiration from a new culture and genre. The lore behind Lalalala alone is amazing (for example their use of the word "rock" as a play on the chinese word "rak" which means pleasure so when they pronounce it, it's purposely suppose to carry the double meaning of the english genre as well as the emphasis of their theme of pure pleasure) - and that just a tiny part of the lore) although Megaverse is remains my favourite track on this album overall.
Edited to add I'm shocked how behind yall are on demonslayer. If you thought the mugen train arc was nuts then you'll be blown away by the new season.

one thing I've noticed about self produced groups is the rap. kpop rappers who write their own lyrics are always going to be better, like Stray Kids, BTS and iKON. They write more words, their words have meaning, and they know the meaning well enough to deliver it with authenticity and flow. A lot of other groups just have very repetetive raps, short raps, and ad-libs. /neu
(note: I'm new to tone tags but trying to learn, sorry if I did it wrong)

  • @polyanagula

thanks for reaction. It is my first time watching your reaction.
regarding s-class and la4, I have seen many people actually liking la4 more, than s class. me included (although I like both songs).
In my opinion all their title tracks starting from "god's menu" have similar vibes, whereas title tracks before are kind of more diverse, since SKZ were kind of searching for their sound back then (although they still sounded like SKZ). but the true diversity is in their b-sides.
"social path" is the Japanese release, those sound a bit different than the Korean releases since the target audience has slightly different taste.
this year was full of collabs: with Tiger JK (Topline), Lisa (Socal path), upcoming collab with Tablo from Epik High (teased at the end of Megaverse); they were also featured on songs of western artists: Troye Sivan (Hyunjin on "rush"), Lil Durk (whole group on "all my life").
regarding self-produced groups, I don't think anyone in kpop is self-produced to an extent SKZ are, since only SKZ write 99% of their songs, barely having other names in credits. maybe Big Bang would be the closest, if I had to guess (would make sense, since Big Bang made phenomenon of "idol participating in song writing" normal in kpop)? I don't know exactly. however in general I think at this point most of groups nowadays have members in credits, but of course the level of involvement is different for different groups.
In my personal opinion I don't see any difference if the members produce songs for the group or not on their music quality. I have my top kpop groups and only SKZ are heavily involved into the song production among them, whereas other groups I love participate rarely and usually just in b-sides if at all, and they still have amazing discographies and huge popularity.
And I can name a couple of groups involved into song writing a lot, but they are not particularly famous (you probably haven't heard of them).

I acknowledge the fact that 3racha HAS a signature of utilizing their strengths: rap, vocals, felix. Their signature is also bending genres which is very apparent in SClass because they take a turn in every verse, every member. The intention was to be FLASHY. Meanwhile, LALALALA(L4) is more familiar and mainstream...because the intention was to "feel the rock" to simply VIBE with it.
So then I go back to how contradictory it is to describe skz's title track to be overlapping...which eased a lot of heartburn coz it sounded like a disrespect (and irony) but I know that's simply how you feel outside of understanding the songs or SKZ in general.

I understand where you're coming from with the comment on their newest title track reminding you of their other title tracks, but the thing with Stray Kids is that if they were to change their norm they've made for themselves with their own unique "sound", their title track would just fit in with the rest of the other kpop title tracks which are all following the same formula. (batter up). They're known within KPOP, and quite honestly hated on, for their unique sound that differentiates them from other kpop groups as they are said to be really "noisy". Their B-sides as well are extremely diverse and cover a wide variety of music genres as well if you were to listen to their albums entirely.

Stray Kids fandom name : STAY
Stray Kids is under JYP Entertainment. Stray Kids was formed through a reality show called 'Stray Kids'. They debuted in 2018. The group is currently composed of 8 members :
Bang Chan (Leader), Changbin, Lee Know, Han Jisung, Felix, Hyunjin, I.N (Maknae) and Seungmin.
    Woojin left the group.
Stray Kids is currently composed of 8 members. One of their sub-units called "3RACHA" (Composed of 3 members : Bang Chan, Changbin and Han Jisung) produces songs for the group.
    Stray Kids has 3 sub-units :
    1. 3RACHA (Composed of 3 members : Bang Chan (Leader), Han Jisung and Changbin)
    2. DANCERACHA/DANCE RACHA (Composed of 3 members : Hyunjin, Lee Know (Leader) and Felix)
    3. VOCALRACHA/VOCAL RACHA (Composed of 2 members : Seungmin and I.N)

If your friend really appreciates the singing factor and blending, BtoB is a 3rd generation group who has finished their military requirements and are coming back strong. Because of their vocal skills they tend to focus on ballad type songs. They can go from Soprano to Bass beautifully. They are self-producing now and starting under a new label with big plans. Wind & Wish is their latest release.

The Group Leader is Bang Chan, who is also the one that knows a lot of people in the industry.
3racha (Comprised of ) Band Chan, Changbin and Han are the production team and Rappers, Danceracha (Comprised of) Lee Know, Felix and Hyunjin, the Dancers, and Vocalracha (Comprised of) Seungmin and I.N, the Vocals... But they can all dance, sing and Rap equally well. They are a Self produced group with Bang Chan having also made the logo and the name of Stray Kids. Bang Chan also personally chose the members of the group. But because it was different and experimental JYP made them go through tests which are in a reality show named after them, Stray Kids. Where they had to compete to stay in the group. At the time the group was 9 but Woojin left the group for personal reasons to the company and himself. He is now a solo artist. So now there are 8 Stray Kids. Initially Lee Know and Felix were eliminated but they were brought back in the end and made the team. (I suspect it's because of Bang Chan that they got back in, something he said in the show to Felix) Also Bang Chan and Felix are Australian in Nationality (hold duel) While Han lived and studied in Malaysia, so most of them are fluent in English. They are family, friends and a group. They are there for each other and all have input in the music and have solo projects that Bang Chan along with 3racha helpa nd support them.

Stray Kids is a group whose members do not have defined positions (for example rapper, vocal or dancer), they do not have a vocal line, rap line or dance line, Bangchan, the leader of the group, has already said that as all the members fit together wherever you place them, the members do not have defined positions, the 8 are vocals, the 8 are rappers, the 8 are dancers and the 8 are visual, people tend to confuse 3racha with rap line, 3racha are the members who are part of the group's production and yes they do rap a lot but they are not the rap line, you can see in the variety of Skz songs Changbin singing even though he is considered just a rapper but he is also a singer, you can see Lee Know being rapper even if they only put him as vocal, Seungmin also say that he is vocal but he also raps, an example of this is their performance of Muddy Water, Seungmin and In are the ones who rap, it is very confusing to define SKZ because all members are do-it-alls, all members can be anything, so the group is a group where there are no defined positions because the 8 members are extremely talented
