  • Indoor Seed Starting Rosemary | Step-by-Step Guide (Zone 6a Massachusetts)
Want to grow rosemary from seed indoors? In this video, I’ll take you through the entire seed-starting process, from supplies to germination and transplanting. Rosemary is a fantastic herb to grow-it's drought-tolerant, perennial (in warmer zones), and packed with flavor for cooking! While it takes patience to start from seed, growing your own ensures a strong, healthy plant for your garden or kitchen.
    🌱 Why Grow Rosemary?
✔️ Hardy, drought-tolerant, and can live for years in containers
✔️ Adds incredible flavor to dishes & has medicinal properties
✔️ Naturally repels pests in the garden
✔️ Beautiful, fragrant addition to any indoor or outdoor space
Step-by-Step: How to Start Rosemary from Seed Indoors
1️⃣ Pre-moisten the soil - Use a well-draining seed-starting mix and dampen it before filling trays.
2️⃣ Fill cell trays - Pack soil lightly into each cell, leaving room for seeds.
3️⃣ Eliminate air pockets - Gently press down on the soil to ensure it's settled.
4️⃣ Place seeds in each cell - I plant 2 seeds per cell for the best chance of germination.
5️⃣ Ensure seed-to-soil contact - Lightly press seeds into the surface so they touch the soil.
6️⃣ Sow at 1/8 inch deep - Cover seeds lightly with soil or fine vermiculite.
7️⃣ Mist with water - Use a spray bottle to moisten the surface without displacing seeds.
8️⃣ Label your tray - Add a plant tag to keep track of your rosemary seedlings.
9️⃣ Provide warmth & humidity - Place the tray on a heat mat (70-80°F) and cover it with a humidity dome to maintain moisture.
🔟 Be patient! Rosemary can take 2-4 weeks to germinate, so keep soil moist but not soggy.
Tips for Growing & Transplanting Rosemary
🌿 Once germinated, remove the humidity dome and place seedlings under grow lights for 12-16 hours daily.
🌿 Water lightly-rosemary does not like soggy roots!
🌿 When seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves, thin them to the strongest plant per cell.
🌿 Harden off gradually before transplanting outdoors in Zone 6a Massachusetts after the last frost.
🌿 Grows best in full sun & well-draining soil. Consider a container if you want to bring it indoors for winter.
