Glitter and be Gay - MADELINE KAHN - Candide

- Another thanks to my friend who are collecting rarities. It is really great when one is able to share stuff like this. Kahn was a truly Diva, and in this early recording she sings this very difficult piece in original range. She DID know how to sing OPERA, too. Her creations we will always remember.
now you see why Kristen Chenoweth is such a big Madeline Kahn fan.
I always suspected she was a coloratura, but this is the first time I've heard her perform such a demanding aria. She was a very rare jewel who never seemed to have the chance to glitter as much as she was capable of. I still miss her.
She wasn't a coloratura. She was alyric soprano
Coloratura. Later, range lowered. She had it all, tgrough phases.
I miss her terribly. What was G-d thinking?
She was a MONSTER --in the good sense of the word. Beautiful, intelligent, talented, funny as hell... and what a voice. She is sorely missed.
Amazing.
We loved you Madeline, you will be sorely missed. You were so funny and beautiful. Even Kristin Chenoweth looked up to you. Rest in Peace.
I wish Madeline were still here. She must be the most talented performer. She could do everything and anything and excellently at that.
I wish I could see what she was doing onstage.
Yes!!! She could be so physical with her comedy. The chuckles from audience members (when she’s not singing) make me jealous lol
I mean, from her to go from singing this to rather convincingly singing off key and monotone as Lilli Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles....that’s talent. I was born the year she died, but I wished I had a time machine so I could go back in time to see her live in person.
Thanks Again Madeline Dear. You’ve made a great many people happy and your art has become a standard for all who’ve been “next” - your life has been a blessing to us all.
The only version of this song where Cunegonde truly sounds like she is laughing, as she should ❤️ Kahn nailed this. I so wish there was video.
MissBekah Havens I never noticed before, but you’re right and I love that about this performance.
Listen to the original version with Barbara Cook. That had the same emphasis, and is the way that Bernstein wanted it. This is the only other rendition I've heard that has it.
Splendid. Absolutely stunning. She owned it. Wish there was a video. Wow. What a talent she was.
In the book "Madeline" she was asked what she wanted to be. She said "I wanted to be the music" She surely was the music. She was committed to every note she sang whether in cabaret, film stage or opera. A consummate musician and lady.
Full book title.
Madeline Kahn
Being the Music: A Life
By William V. Madison
Wow I didnt know she could sing like this! don't let the humor fool you, this is a very, very challenging piece (long notes, high notes, fast notes, low notes...). BRAVISSIMA!!!
One of the most challenging bits since the Queen of the Night aria. Just bc it's written in the 1950s doesn't make it a snap!
Savage.
Dear lord in heaven, she had talent!
What a gift...too soon gone. Comedienne and coloratura of the first order.
amen
Inspiring woman. Hilarious and devastating. Her voice reflects her range within each medium as a master of comedy, theater film and opera.
Madeline said on a broadcast that she didn't pursue more singing because the top of her voice didn't come in! Well, some of us would respectfully disagree...
I can definitely tell she was not comfortable singing in the sixth octave (she once said that this operetta is very difficult for her, which confirms my suspicions), but then again that's what training is all about. I'm sure she could have been an opera singer if she really wanted to. Maybe not a coloratura, though.
She misses most of the written top notes and the one she does at the end sounds very uncomfortable and very unhealthy. Otherwise her voice is amazing.
How can someone so funny and beautiful be dead? That's what I want to know.
Makes me so happy and breaks my heart at the same time! Love her so much!
❤️ amazing, I'm so glad I found this. I had no idea she was a singer and I'd even heard her sing before. I had listened to the original cast of On the Twentieth Century and my favorite song was even Veronique but didn't realize that was her. Candide however is one of my absolute favorite musicals.
Brava, Madeline. The ideal Cunegonda. She could teach a lot of divas how to perform "Glitter" with the hilarious irony in which it was written.
She takes that faster than anyone I've ever heard. Gorgeous--just wish we could see what antics she's doing, to make the audience break out so.
An extraordinary outstanding Human Jewel!!❤🎉
Madeline made it zip by with comedic inspiration without us realizing a truly great voice could support her interpretation.
She had it all.
THIS is Madeline Kahn???????? Oh, My God!!!! I never knew of her vocal discipline.
Madeline Kahn did a concert performance of "Candide" in the late 60's with Alan Arkin as Pangloss and Irra Petina reprising her Tony Award nominated performance as the Old Lady. I'm thrilled that this recording exists!
I believe it was a tribute concert for Bernstein done at Lincoln Center in 1968 with David Watson in the title role. A full recording of the event does exist. He once told me they both met Bernstein for the first time during rehearsals and she hilariously went off on the composer for writing such a difficult number for her to sing. During the shooting of her first film "What's Up, Doc?", Watson spoke to her and she was truly upset saying that they had made her look so unattractive as Streisand's foil Eunice Burns. She was wonderful in that film but did look quite matronly as the part called for.
Back in the days of reel-to-reel (audio) tape, there was a complete bootleg of that concert performance of Candide that circulated, dialogue and all. Apart from the wonderful cast - Kahn, Pettina, Arkin and (I believe) William Lewis as Candide (?) - the most important point was that it still used Lillian Hellman's original libretto, somewhat modified to accommodate additional (restored) musical numbers. For those of us who feel that Candide has never really made sense since Hellman's contribution was withdrawn/jettisoned, it made for fascinating listening. And Madeline Kahn was superb as Cunegonde.
Does that full recording still exist today?! I’d love to listen to it!
A true true genius in every way. She is very missed.
A fierce force of Nature!!! ✨❤️🔥✨❤️🔥✨❤️🔥 We miss you. You GOAT girl, you!
A much greater talent than anyone ever appreciated. She should have been used for both Broadway and Hollywood much more than she was. If she had been born 40 years earlier the Gershwins and Cole Poter and Rodgers and Hammerstein and Jerome Kern all would have written roles just for her as they did for Merman and Martin.
The disrespect to merman and Martin 💀
Your idea of disrespect is weird
Madeline's operatic abilities were always criminally under-appreciated, and never is that more apparent than in this piece. I love both Diana Damrau and Kristen Chenoweth's versions, but this takes the best parts of both of those and combines it into one flawless performance. On a personal note, the picture at 2:10 ("A Wed Wose...How Womantic") is part of a series of Madeline icons I made years ago. Thank you for including it in this wonderful tribute!
Have you heard the origunal bem perfomer of the sing Barbara Cook Johnny?
Bernstein was a genius. Chenoweth and Kahn were geniuses too with singing this. Both made it their own. Cook made me love Cunegonde in ONE version of the show, Kahn made me laugh, and yet identify with Cunegonde. Being of THAT generation of gay men, it is a miracle that I am still alive. Sorry/not sorry. It's the truth.
not liking what you like is a crime in Johnnyland? ok then
Just AMAZING. God created a triple threat when he created Madeline and then took her away before she could finish her last act. This is a jewel.
She was so incredibly talented. I loved her so much ❤😢
Fuck cancer
Mel Brooks said, she one sent him an autographed photo of
herself for his birthday, with the inscription : "Without you, I'm shit."
A woman perfectly suited in voice, body and musical comedy genius-nesses. Madeline, you will never be forgotten!! Beyoncé, listen up: this is a real grown-up artist, little girl!
She is missed every single day.
God I would have loved to see this. Her facial expressions were as good as her voice. I miss her and the laughter she brought.
She was the real deal. Love her!
Fabulous. A legend
What a talent!!! LOVED HER!
I had NO idea that the hilarious lady in Mel Brooks' comedies could sing so beautifully! What an amazing surprise!
I didn't either until I became a big fan of hers.
I think she got another one. :3
WingsOfASong Apparentally she was a trained singer and did drama and voice in college. I think she had a beautiful voice!
Yeah she did. What a gorgeous, gorgeous voice.
WingsOfASong Agreed! :)
I am speechless. I had absolutely no idea that Madeline Kahn was so diversely talented.
Always knew she was beautiful and hilarious, but as for this. . . a newfound level of respect and admiration for this lady. Looking forward to meeting her in the resurrection.
She was a genius..which means talent taken to an unexplainable level, a force of nature. Thank you for posting
Yes, I know of her training. She was so good at everything she did, everything. From slapstick to the above, Cunegonde in 'Candide'.......! Chenoweth, today, reminds me of a younger Kahn. Both so talented and can do anything. Felt so badly when she passed. A true loss. Peace Out!
Kahn was not a singer who could act but an actor who could sing, amazingly. A phenom. She could have chosen from any career, from opera, musical theatre,TV to film, but wait, she did do them all. We departed much too soon but I won't say 'God needed anther angel' or other clichés, a's I lost my husband very young, at 29 yo, and those comments just angered me. She was a joy when alive and gave me reasons to smile, something I could use more of. I'm grateful for that which she gave, in abundance.
So true, she was brilliant. Her performance in Paper Moon, all the comedic stuff she did so brilliantly and omg, her voice! So talented.
I'm sorry about your husband. I enjoyed your insights here.
A great rendition! I have never heard it quite this fast. She seemed to be talented in everything she did. It was a tragic day for the many who loved her on the day she died. A gargantuan loss!
I desperately wish the accompanying video was with this!
Madeline had it down because she was such a natural comedienne, also. Thanks so much for this.
I had no idea.... so glad to hear this.
I remember hearing that she was a singer, but I had no idea she was this great! Her performance is much better than the top rated versions on this song I found on UA-cam before I found this.
What a gift to the human race she was!
yesssss
GLORIOUS! -- and funny a hell -- a rare and wonderful combination. And she was so beautiful it almost hurt to look at her.
Wow!!!...just, wow!!
This is awesome! I knew she could sing opera, but had no idea she was this incredible!
surely one of the most amazing performances ever, and not caught on video. musica reservata. at least we have the audio.
Thank you so much for sharing! Madeline Kahn is a genius!
One of my favorite skits on SNL is when Gilda playing Barbra Wawa interviews her playing Marwena Deutschland. It is brilliant on both of their parts and one can see they are having a blast doing this.
You forget her cantata where she sings at the top of a bowling trophy. Her comedic gift is in being serious in the wackiest of circumstances, where most comediennes are wacky in serious circumstances. Kahn is much more European in her approach, I believe, an echo of Berlin, perhaps.
So beautiful in so many ways! What a treasure! If only she could have had more time to be Madeline. Missed much
Respect to Madeline, or as a teen might say, "props go out to here." This is a ballbuster aria beyond ballbusters, and she nails the presentation with her comedic talent. I got chills listening, thank you for posting this and letting me experience it.
Such a talented performer, comedienne, and especially singer. Tragic.
Madeline Khan singing opera?! Whoda thunk it!? A very impressive performance indeed!
Thank you post person!!
ugh! she is my idol! Her and Eartha Kitt are goddesses!
I read about this recording in her biography by William Madison. Só glad it was on youtube. Thanks a mil!!! She's superbe!
OMG I love her so much more than I ever did now.
Gobsmacked! Stupendous!
UGH that beautiful voice and face and her diction and she's funny, too?! I love her so much.
Kahn was the "Whole Package" - we don't seem to have wonders such as she any loonger
She is my idol beyond all others
She is the BEST at this song!!!
Fabulous!! Such a wonderful artist whom I discovered as Eunice Burns, and then realised the breadth of her talents
"What's Up Doc" indeed!
+Michael Llewellyn Yes! Eunice Burns! However, I first discovered her as Miss Trixie in "Paper Moon" with Ryan and Tatum O'Neal. "She must have a bladder the size of a peanut." Hilarious!
Thank you SO much for this. I still miss Madeline so much altho' she lives on in film.
Her performance is one of the best after Barbara Cook who introduced the song in1956. They as Broadway lyric sopranos understood what Berstein wanted for the role better than the great operatic than sang it after them.Chenoweth, who admires Kahn very much, sins very well but its exagerated.Smong the opera singers Iprefere Natalie Desay and Diana Damrau al,though there are operatic while Cook and Kahn lived the role and were excelent..Its pity that Madeline died so young and she could have been a great operatic had she wanted bur like Cook,Andrews,Chenoweth and others she chose the musicals ans was very good.
Opera singers do not do it as well. This is light opera, a parody of Lily Pons, or once was. Not serious. And Cunegonde is a madcap, cutthroat character, rather like Chenoweth, ironically.
It's not fake anything. It's an operetta, a form of musical theatre having it's origins in mid-19th century French comic opera.
This is awesome! Love her!
I had NO idea Madeline Kahn had such an operatic soprano on her. Was there no end to her talents??
Well, yes. Breathing.
A powerhouse!
WOW i never knew enough about her greatness
Oh my GOD I am SO glad I found this!
Awesome ………didn’t know that she could sing like this
No one was better suited to this devilish diva than La Madeline. Slutty, lovable, vocally radiant, with muchos inuendos aqui. Me gusta mucho esta muchacha puta.
@KarateChess23 - and thank You! She truly was (IS!) something special
What a talent!!!! What a loss!!! And today there's . . . uh . . . uh . . . Forget it.
Gorgeous!!!
I would have loved to see a video of this- she must have been a hoot!
B-R-A-V-A! I saw the incomparable Ms. Kahn live in "The Sisters Rosenzweig". It was non-musical, but Madeline was so freaking funny, there were way too many times the play was held up due to the audience not being able to stop their scream laughing.
Thanks for posting. Huge MK fan here.
Jeez, she does this in the highest key I’ve heard. (Given I’ve only heard a few versions but still!) I feel like such a creep but I’m so in loveeeeee I can’t stop consuming all of her available content lol she was just so amazing, I was 5 when she died 😢
Chenoweth is the only person I've heard that rivals Kahn is both musicality and comedic timing here. So brilliant, both of them. (Especially as Kahn is one of Cheno's heroes, I can totally see how she influenced her performance of "Glitter.")
Chenoweth is nowhere near the class of any previous Broadway or opera star. She might be, but she lacks the taste, class and heart. She is a cold, calculated money-making machine. Broaden your horizons.
Love MK too. Natalie Dessay is wildly funny and she interpolates a high A-flat at the end!
A must hear.
OMG! ThankYou, Thank You!!!!!! Amazing!!! It really shows how much she was trained. I so wish I could have seen her do this.../sigh
Thanks so much for this. Perhaps a video of it will surface during my lifetime. I hope so.
How did one ascertain this? I love this woman.
Right! I had no clue this even existed!
I heard Mel Brooks talking about it on Conan and had to look it up.
Carey Coleman This was an historic concert: for Leonard Bernstein's 60th birthday. This was conducted by him, the composer of "Candide." "Glitter And Be Gay" is probably the most famous piece of music from that...excepting maybe the overture...
+Carey Coleman Did you mean "acquire" rather than "ascertain?" They have two completely different meanings, and ascertain isn't the correct term. Just saying.
I had no idea she had vocal training. WOW
Wow-thanks for sharing. This is great!!
She obviously had the audience in stitches. What, oh what, might she have been doing?
I read an article that stated she began "juggling her breasts". Not even sure what that means, but anything this woman did was hilarious, so that must have been doubly so.
Breathtaking! Had no idea this existed.
The actual sound and tone of her voice are so much more beautiful and developed than Chenoweth. She actually sounds like an opera singer. Chenoweth sounds like she plays one on TV.
I clicked the thumbs up and was looking for the ❤️ HEART button.
It’s okay to prefer one over the other (both are amazing IMO) but what was the point of bashing another singer? You could make your point without being spreading negativity.
@@potroastpig Because it's legitimate criticism. I hate when people talk about artists, almost exclusively women, by bashing other women as being "less classy" or denigrating them sexually. But I feel that comparing and contrasting the art and technique is legitimate, whether the opinion is positive or negative. Chenoweth's performance of this aria is one of the most well known and totally fair game for comparison. And besides, it's true. Her tone is nasal and her acting isn't grounded in the character at all. It's not apples and oranges.
@@sottosopravoce It’s well known because it’s so incredible. DUH!
Chenoweth IS an opera singer and sounds like one as well. Both women were incredible in the role.
Goddess GONE TOO SOON
stunning!
This was part of a 50th birthday tribute to Lenny (see my earlier comment below), and apparently no video record of the occasion has surfaced. But as they say, hope springs eternal.
Too bad we don't have video of this performance. I'll bet her "schtick" was wonderful. Vocally--she threw away all the high "E's," so isn't quite the stature of a Barbara Cook. Still, to hear such a credible performance out of a woman who was known primarily for her comedic genius just raises my respect for her. Kahn's talent was well-rounded in a way few are. What a shame she is gone.
Do you think Barbara Cook sang in such a high key? Or with this much power? I think not.
