This medieval tradition is meant to confer trust and honor; it grows from the medieval walled city whose gates were guarded during the day and locked at night. The key symbolizes the freedom of the recipient to enter and leave the city at will, as a trusted friend of city residents. I hardly think key to the city is conferred on those who are already in the city or welcome to the city....nobody @ me now just another POV

Mutabaruka was right there having done an excellent dub poetry at the event. I thought he would have been given some recognition for his years of contribution to our Jamaican culture. Maverick you missed the boat on this one! You see us giving keys to the city to locals? That is reserved for foreigners like Machel...Soca music has become interwoven into the fabric of our local culture plus this is like a fillip for Caribbean integration. Why can't we be first to do this, paving the path for other Caribbean territories to do likewise. Time for our territories to be intentional about integration, the vehicle that will make us a strong unit. Now for a little history. According to a Broward University course outline "The presentation of a Key to the City can be traced back to medieval times, when cities were enclosed by walls and locked gates. By the middle of the 1800's, it became customary to give a Key to the City as a direct symbol of the City's wish that a guest feel free to come and go at will.” So Maverick, the concept is to give the keys to guests you deem have earned your trust to operate just like a citizen. You totally disregarded the announcement on independence day of persons (locals) who will be honoured with national honours on heroes day which includes musicians. So mi feel seh ur ranting here was kinda pointless and emotionally charged with 'misplaced reasoning'.🤭

And billionaires, rappers, singers, Hollywood stars, white people, Europeans etc love reggae music a d so called uptown people are are thrash to those people so they are nobody they can't stop one of the biggest mustc worldwide
Look, a few years back some people here in Trinidad were critical of a a widely advertised and apparently successful Buju Banton show for some of the same incoherent reasons that Maverick advances here - the same vague nonsense about the quality and abundance of our local talent making it somehow unpatriotic for Trini people to support Buju in this way. I cursed some of my friends for persisting with the same narrow-minded, crab-in-barrel attitudes that killed off the Federation back in the 1960s and continue to weaken CARICOM to this day. Open your eyes and look around, Maverick. See our northern "neighbor" imposing a LGBTQ agenda in our schools? The teachers don't want it, the parents don't want it either but it's still going ahead. Why does the government seem powerless to stop it? See our own governments implementing Central Bank Digital Currencies without consulting the population? Outsiders can do these things to us because we have no power. How can our small island cultures survive alone "in a world that don't need islands no more" except as somebody's vassal or slave? Common sense alone will tell you that we need to unite. But no. You call me foreigner and slam the door in my face. And for what? What is this key to the city, Maverick? What lock does it open? What privilege does it bestow? The answers are "Nothing", "None" and "None". This "key to the city" is just a meaningless ceremony. The mayor could give away a hundred such keys every day and it would make no difference to anybody. Except the Maverick, of course. Maverick will get on youtube to proclaim to the world that the keys to Kingston town must be reserved for Jamaicans and Jamaicans alone. Steups. I will not unsubscribe because I like this channel. It is better than one dotish episode. But boy, you really piss me off with this one.
I was there and was perplexed about the same thing but especially about the 10 minutes long citation read before the presentation. I wondered why the group who had been honored shortly before, Morgan's Heritage, was not deserving of even a 3 minutes reflection on their contribution to our music and their accomplishments but a foreigner had his whole life story read to us. He was even given more time to perform than Morgan's Heritage. Just a big blunder overall.

All that unsolicited info and yet you missed the point. No one is saying the gentleman should or should not be conferred with the Order. They are saying that Jamaica's Independence Day was not the appropriate place to do so!
Great gesture…wrong place and time.

So, true Oral Tracey. Andrew and Babsy should be a shame of themselves because our National Hero's never bows down to the oppressors. Mutabaruka was right there having done an excellent dub poetry at the event. I thought he would have been given some recognition for his years of contribution to our Jamaican culture. I looked at the response of the crowd to the soca performance by Machel Montano and it was obvious that the mood was not there for soca. This was Jamaica's Independence Day.
