Iliza Shlesinger: Be Skeptical, not Cynical
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 жов 2022
- Iliza Shlesinger (comedian, actor, writer, producer, and author) returns to the podcast to reveal the solutions to her somatic pain, the changing cultural sensitivity toward comedy, and her approach to expressing anger. She discusses the origins and process of her observational and inclusive comedy style, new motherhood, and the epidemic of online hate, especially toward women. Mayim and Iliza break down the difference between being skeptical and cynical, the risks of consuming negative news, and the dangers of materialism.

KUDOS for Jonathan’s question (why I always feel so in sync with his thoughts?) at the end of the episode: “If you think everything is a scam, how do you find a little hope in this world?” And to be framed Iliza’s answer: “I find joy with genuine connection…just clicking with people”. That “genuine connection” is THE MAGIC THING OF THIS PODCAST! And Mayim, how adorable is watching your excitement for having your true friend there. It’s contagious! And full of tenderness! She’s as you: wise, intelligent, with a well-furnished brain and a full of maturity woman!
P
💯 love both of them
Just starting to listening to this podcast right now and this comment popped up at the top. It gave me chills. I really I needed to hear and be reminded of this today ❤
Iliza is an amazing combo of intelligence humor and emotional maturity. this would be an amazing group for a lunch date.
Yup!
🔥🔥🔥
@@MayimBialikisn't it sad how modern fictional ones are neglected?
I had a dream last night that I had lunch with Iliza!!! Love love love her. Thanks @Mayim for introducing her in the first podcast as I haven’t been able to get enough of her since. #notinastalkerway 😂
@@michellebustos5671SIMP!
Watching Iliza, Mayim and Jonathan interactions is always such enlightening pleasure, that during all the episode I felt myself as beeing there, having breakfast with them while chatting about all that was spoken and that resonates so much with me, with my morning coffee in my hand, that time flew by and I arrived late to my office! That’s THE MAGIG OF THIS PODCAST! 💜But you know what? The occasion deserved it! Thank you for this Iliza’s second and again TERRIFIC, FENOMENAL, FABULOUS episode! Phrases/concepts to be framed or in future MBB merch:
“Skeptical without being cynical”
“Digestible feminism”
“If it’s funny, it’s funny!”
“I find joy just clicking with people”
Hi Mayim. I'm currently majoring in Communications at the University of Illinois-Chicago. My research paper focuses on mental health and cultural sensitivity, and your latest podcast with Iliza Shlesinger will be very useful for my college assignment.
So glad this one was helpful, Aristidas - best of luck in your studies!! 🧠🧠🧠
This conversation gave me a mild braingasm. Love it!❤
This is the BEST combo. I need Mayim and Iliza to follow me around all day long and give commentary on all the things. 🤣
You two are the physical embodiment of my head voice. ❤️❤️
Oh and y'all are amazing human beings, so that's a plus. ❤️
And that maple leaf Jonathan is awesome too. Can't forget him! 😆
Edited to add: I just finished Hot Forever. As always Iliza is absolutely one thousand percent correct. ❤️
Yayyyyy, so glad you enjoyed this one!! 🧠🫶
@Mayim Bialik just curious. How come u don't promote ur new season of call me kat?
Iliza is back on this podcast😮😮 yay! Breathe of fresh air seeing these three together. Hot Forever is awesomely funny and she’s amazing live. Love how insightful Iliza is.
Thank you so much Mayim for having Iliza Shlesinger on today. I always get so excited when you posted a new video!
Very thankful for Jonathan's calmth, listeningskills and kindness.
"do you want me to say it?? mayim, it's simple genetics" 😂😂😂😂 this friendship is my favorite thing ever. "go get you an armadillo" 🤣
I haven't even listened to a minute of this and I'm already geeking out. I remember being in high school and watching Iliza on Last Comic Standing, and her presence and style of humor making such an impact on me at a really formative period of my life. Mayim, your podcasts always seem to resonate with me in exactly the way I need. Thank you (Mayim and Jonathan!) for putting this content out there!
Wow you both are like real friends, genius, love the humor, love the insights into motivations for human behavior! ❤
I'm a Brazilian Jewish man who has been to the USA, and have lived in Pittsburgh,PA.
I love your podcasts for the contents in many of them, and also of the beautiful American accents of you,and the guests!!!
Thanks.
omg yay another Iliza ep! what a great way to start the day
Mayim..this is a way better gig for you than jeopardy and I really enjoy this show a ton. You have such great intelligence and humor.
Mayim, I love watching your body language as Jonathan gives his "sleep is important" pitch!!! :-) Much love to you all
Jonathan, thank you for sharing! This entire episode was great. I was listening as I was putting together client goodie bags. I stoped what I was doing to pay attention when Jonathan was talking about how Iliza’s husband can get better sleep. The Netflix specials are awesome and I look forward to reading the book. I love the perspective of this podcast and I really dig Iliza as a guest.
I was just thinking of Iliza on your podcast!
I'm so glad you're double dipping!
The reason was that I saw Cinema Therapy analyzing a movie called "Split" and talking about how Dissociative Identity "disorder" is kind of just an extreme version of what we all do in different situations - different personalities for different contexts.
Iliza's party goblin came to mind as a less extreme Dissociative Identity.
Mayim just found your podcast super stoked to dig in!
Super loved this! Thank you!
Her new special was the best yet. It really hit home as a woman in her 40’s who has been in ugly bras her entire life. 😂
You guys crack me up! Loved the interactions and discussions!
I'm living for this episode, I could listen to y'all talk all day 😂
Thanks so much for watching, Kat!!! Happy you enjoyed this one! 🧠🫶
I seriously LOVE Iliza!!! Her hilarious insights give. Me. Life. 😘
Kentucky in the house thanks for all you do thanks for being a creator I’m here to support you !
Iliza is one of the funniest and most insightful comedians today.
i love that you are friends.
i admire you both and all your work.
thanks for this gift!
Wow..refreshing mindgasm 🙏🏼✨🤍 intellect & heart
We need more of you
I Love your show. Totally Love Iliza too! Thank you you both🕊
i love watching your videos, it's like i'm having a free therapy session with all the insights.
I love hearing this podcast in general, but this episode was just AMAZING. It's my 3rd time hearing to this and it's just like a bar conversation! I felt called out with the “you need therapy and a walk outside” cause it’s just so TRUE and FUNNY. Love from Brazil ❤
Soooooo glad you enjoyed this one, Jamylle!! Thanks so kindly for watching!! 🧠🫶
Hey Dr Bialik. I admit I sometimes immediately get angered when something annoys me. I sometimes tell people to stop doing what they're doing to annoy me kind of rudely instead of asking nicely 1st. Anyways you're my favorite actress ever! I really loved your performance as Amy Farrah Fowler AKA the best fictional woman character ever made! Keep your good work!
i love you and your show ,thank you both
Full time help is a privilege that makes motherhood a breeze - you can’t have a truly separate identity without that luxury (even if you’re a working mom). Glad Illiza acknowledges it.
EXCELLENT DISCUSSION. Luv Iliza & love the rapport between the three of you. Thanks!!
Thanks so much for joining us, Mandy!!! 🧠🫶
I really enjoyed this episode!!! Which episode did Jonathan refer too about sleep??
Awwww what a dream team adore Mayim and Iliza , now that would be an amazing movie or sitcom combo 🥰❤️❤️❤️
October 2022 i am truly sorry for your loss. i do not know how to console you other than to say you are a good person.
Excited for Tuesday Therapy. I have not seen Iliza before. But I’m 15 minutes in and 1. She is funny, wise, and entertaining in just a few moments. So I will be watching these Netflix specials. 2. Dr. Mayim the excitement you have for your friend is wonderful. It’s an added bonus to the already wonderful videos you produce for us. Have a great week. Time for me to get back to the show over breakfast. Sending appreciation from Detroit 💙🌈💙.
Hey fellow Detroiter! I was already going to reply after reading you've never seen Iliza before, so that last part was a nice surprise. ☺ She has been on Heather McDonald's Juicy Scoop (also on YT + audio) podcast a few times. I believe she was on last Tuesday and was amazing. We definitely share a similar 🧠. 😅 Link for episode: ua-cam.com/video/HUJsng1pjRA/v-deo.html
Thanks so much for the note, Jeff - glad you’re enjoying this one! Have a great week!!! 🧠🧠🧠
I really enjoy most of Shlesinger's work. She is smart and funny - likely why I follow many female comedians - they have to be smart, funny, and tough! I just ordered her new book (not from a small dealer- sorry). I look forward to reading it. Thank you Shelsinger for trying to help out the world!
I LITERALLY JUST LOVE THIS CHANNEL 🥰🥰🥰
And we love having you, Nanono - thanks so much for being a part of it!! 🧠🫶
“ Grace and space “ yes!
Excellent interview / chat - **applause**
Also first UA-cam / Podcast I've seen someone drinking Philz Coffee on camera and I was suddenly back in San Francisco August 2008; I got coffee there every day for 8 days!
“what we do when we’re offended” 🙏🏼
I first watched something by Iliza two maybe 3 years ago and since then I've watched everything I could lay my hands on, and some of the material - multiple times. I can never get enough. I think Iliza is the most brilliant and compassionate, eloquent and understanding comedian I know. While being satirical in pointing out vices she is also always respectful unless of course towards total assholes who deserve not to be respected. Also, I think the lady may have done more for mature intelligent feminism than many persons who consider themselves leaders of the movement. Definitely you've gotten more men on board than anybody else. Ma'am, you're amazing.
Love this conversation 😊.
At 41:30 Mayim asks how Iliza sees herself on the gender spectrum, being both strong and loving sparkly things and dressing up as well. I haven't watched Iliza's complete answer yet, but why is that even a thing, why do we need to put people into drawers that they may or may not fit into? We can be all kinds of things at the same time and that does not make us more feminin or masculin or more thoughtful or superficial. It took me a long time to learn that about myself and I just wish we would all make it easier on ourselves.
I made this episode super simple for my girls to watch - link copy, incessant texting. Someone finally gave the anecdote to the constant kicking the patriarchy in the balls! I love this podcast, have loved Iliza LONG time and am just so happy the three of you are in the world. Mwah!!!
Making sure you get some light in your eyes, your phone tucked away and being quiet in the car. ALL ways to be mindful within your-self and your surroundings. When you express emphatically that you don’t like “mindfulness” then follow up with how you actually are mindful…I wonder if Iliza knows what mindfulness actually is. Thinker!! I do love what she does and what this podcast brings into my small space!
I feel like you have the same language. Can pick up on secret codes of pitch. This brings be joy.
Omg I love iliza so much ❤
Love Iliza, Powerhouse!♡♡♡
Iliza had me in stitches when she said, "This is just science"! 😂
I cried laughing watching the special!!! So great!
It’s almost TOO good!!! 🔥🔥🔥
@@MayimBialik The crying took at least 5 minutes to stop!!! Definitely too good! BTW I just LOVE YOUR PODCAST!!! I only listen to 3 podcasts consistently and yours is one of them!
I’ve seen all her shows and she is one of the few female comedians my partner will watch 😊
great show
I could listen to this combo anytime!?
Mayim is so bold she picks her noise on air. ;)
lliza is talented and hilarious she is one of my ❤️ favorite people and comedians .
Millenials are actually born between 1981-1996. So no, Jonathan still doesn't make the cut. Lol, I just wanted to "break that down" in case anyone was confused. Lol, I'm an elder millennial born in late 82. Also, I love watching these videos. Such amazing guests! Including Iliza, of course, from today!❤
There's nothing wrong with doing sleep differently from the norm. There's no one correct way to sleep. Just sleep when you're tired and be awake when you're not tired. Your body will tell you what it needs if you learn to pay attention to it. I usually do one, long sleep at night that's 8-10 hours to make me feel rested, but sometimes that changes and I need to start sleep earlier and wake up after like 5 hours and no longer feel tired. Then I'll need to have a nap the next afternoon. Why fight it? Trying to go against the flow is unnecessary effort.
It sucks that so many people think your schedule has to be so rigidly structured that everybody is supposed to live like robots. Trying to maintain the same rhythm perpetually is stressful and tiring. Let your body change things up when it needs to -- like that extra deep breath you take occasionally. I'm not saying that you should sleep erratically, but there should be some flexibility in how and when you sleep. We're not robots.
Agree!
I loveee that she has written a book in her actual comedy style🙌 tangent. do a littlw dance. get back to it. she is a true artist🧡 saw her in vegas this past July for the first time and it was outstanding. She does alllll the things she does, so well. Seems to always be the perfect blend of herself/opinions, her comedy, her marriage/family life in everything that she does.
We absolutely agree!!! Iliza is a force. Thanks so much for the kind words, Katelyn!!

Today's comedy! I turned off Netflix. I really want to see Iliza. Holy schmickens. I think I already told my husband. Hopefully UA-cam will play her at some point I will look it up. I need to write a book for all of my comedies. Thank you. God bless you and yours. Love, jenwhite 🥰 ❤ 💖 ♥
I would love to have any one of this trio as a friend. Do I have to move back to the West Coast to meet people like this.?
I have a fond appreciation for Iliza Shlesinger, even though I am not particularly drawn to comedy or stand-up. She has a unique talent for storytelling, and her style can be compared to that of a raw funny psyco-psychoanalyst. It was through watching her performances that I learned the delicate art of taking a table corner to the crotch like a pro! I truly believe that would be an excellent TED Talk. And, an amusing aspect of her appearance is her cute small nose which brings to mind the character of Olive Oyl what only adds to the humor she brings to me. 😉😉😄😄
I watch comedy specials repeatedly. I use it as therapy. 😌
Smile for your people.
I always had cyclical insomnia. When I worked a regular job it was bad when I had it, every 3 or 4 months. Now that l’m retired I don’t have it, because I sleep whenever I am sleepy. I live in NYC, but sometimes I’m in Tokio Schedule, or in Madrid Schedule, so I might be sleeping afternoons or early evenings, but stay awake all night long until I feel sleepy again, 18 to 20 hours later. I’m ok with 4 to 5 hours of sleep a day.
Oof, that sounds rough but glad you’re out of the woods now. Thanks for sharing, J.B.!!
Shout out Mafoud💛🌹
Mayim. Relax You dont need to validate yourself by cutting down Johnathon, he loves you. you are awesome and have been so successful and Iliza you are fab and congrates on all your success
She can say whatever she wants. I'll listen.
I would tell Iliza that according to a great many psychologists "retail therapy" is literally a form of therapy for a great many conditions.
I know you probably won't answer this, but I'mgoingtoask anyway, where did you get that red long sleeved T-Rex T-Shirt you were wearing on

Goddamn, this conversation did not disappoint 🤣🤣🤣
39:29 Also, again, as you said before … it’s not just about your group or my group or their group etc. … it’s about what we can do together to make things better … for all of us. Having a group of people in society that is genuinely disadvantaged will not work out in the long run. It won’t be good for society in general.
Why would anyone hate on (I want to say women) anyone online? I will never understand. It is my failure that I don't social, however, I think all people are beautiful in their own way, even if they are funny (looking or otherwise) to me. Where does all of this hate come from? I don't think I can hate. On that note though, there are a lot of people I will never understand. All people are beautiful on some level, especially women, anyone who truly OWNs their own body! I am a man that loves women. My brother is my sister and she loves her body but receives so much hate. Why? I guess my whole thing comes down to "why???". Anyway, just love who you are and keep being awesome. (My brain is far to tangential to be coherent. Sorry.)

Iliza is super 🆒 and absolutely amazing 😍🤩!
so if I was born in November 82, am I a millennial or not?
Ooh, double-indenting for tangents. I could go for that in a big way.
Hands down one of the best comics we have. I am going to steal Myopic Woke-ness.
Couldn’t agree more - Iliza is a true gem. Thanks so much for watching this one, John!
I agree with most of what is going on here, but let me just add that as a pagan...not once have I ever felt the urge to park in front of someone to get groceries..( I have spells for that). Also, It is refreshing to still find intelligent thought and conversation in the bleak world of ethernet chaos. As an elder gen y the hell not-er, I feel conversation has gone out the window for brevity of mind and misdirected memories.
To be a good comedian, u have to be incredibly intelligent
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
@mayim-- I love your show. I have been looking for a place to make a recommendation for an interview guest. She has written an award-winning book on overcoming sexual abuse by her psychiatrist. She's also been a therapist for over twenty years. Her book is called, "Seduced Into Darkness". Her name, Carrie Ishee.
Wanna sleep - Mazzy Star, the Among My Swan album. It’s the only thing that has worked for me since ~’96ish. And, I personally know, if I get to the end of the album, I have no right to be in bed. I need to get up (out of bed) for another 30-60mins, then try it again. Has it cured my insomnia? Fuck no. But I’m 43yo and realize whenever I haven’t been sleeping coincides with not listen to that damn album.

They are SO inclusive, not taking an aggressive political stance nor pushing hostile feminism, it is refreshing hearing her say "coming from a place of love" and my heart lightens, right up until they slap me with two words: geriatric pregnancy. Wth. Smh. Fml. Sob! Lol

I nap daily. It's possibly genetic, I had a grandfather who did same, he napped same time everyday. He was a millionaire Realtor, he was driven, he was always present in the moment. However he needed his 30min of downtime daily. I have found I need that nap too, since my 20's. Im almost 60. I'll always nap, and sorry Jonathan you do not understand TYPE-N people. Like Mayim, Like my grandfather. We nap. Accept it.
How refreshing...A comedian that doesnt just fall into the " My husband is a pig" trap. Its why I never found "Everybody Loves Raymond" funny.
1980 is the cut-off for Millenial not 83.

Yes!!! The amount of vile-ness women deal with is atrocious!! Just a few hours ago a client of mine told me she was driving home and was airdropped an unsolicited D pic…she was DRIVING HOME and still had to deal with it from a stranger! 👺
WOW - SO NOT OKAY!!! 😾Very sorry to hear your client had to deal with that. Thanks so much for sharing, Alison, and for watching this one!
