Another fantastic conversation! Cheers. I had a similar experience of fascination and excitement about learning real things about the world and reality as I shed my religious indoctrination. I went to Christian high school and when I got into college I felt like I was blind and now I can see!!

40:19 for the first time, in a room with no one around, I involuntarily let out a hail Satan. I think these words and raise my horns all the time but damn it when Alice advocated rebellion like this it filled my adversarial heart. Blasphemy, re-establishing control and expression by engaging in what theistic religions or supernatural schools of thought deem profane is such a profound part of my and many satanists practices. Let the catharsis set you free and find what you love.
Hail Satan, hail Alice and our esteemed hostess, and hail all of you.

    "rebellion is sacred, and I think it is medicine . . . a necessary growth phase. .. ." (40:18)

Wayward was such a great book. I listened to the audiobook version a few weeks back and, aside from the Toronto Blessing and the constant traveling, in many ways Alice's story reminds me of my very first girlfriend, especially in terms of the purity culture crap. Of course my ex had already been extremely sheltered due to a combination of visual impairment and cerebral palsy, and then adding conservative Christianity on to that certainly didn't help. That was actually something of a sore point between us because she was and still is a devout Christian and I was and still am not. She unfortunately couldn't just leave that alone and would bring it up at every opportunity, especially when she found out that not only was I playing fantasy roleplaying games like Final Fantasy but I was also reading Harry Potter. Boy did she ever freak out over that one. She may not have believed in the whole unknown future spouse thing but she definitely believed that sexual exploration and certainly sex itself were reserved for the marriage bed only. I didn't and don't agree with that and I never hid that from her, but of course I assured her that we would only ever go as far as she was willing. But Alice's story, particularly when she would touch on the issue of sex and how it's handled in a lot of evangelical circles, definitely reminded me of my ex and some of her thinking.
