My parents listened to The Hollies alot. Now I listen to them alot. I love their music. It's so hard to share my favourite Hollies song. "Air that I breathe" comes to mind. Beautiful song.
I get you perfectly. You’re feeling every part of the song and no one can tell you how a song makes you feel. The lyrics can absolutely make you envision one thing while the beat another...it’s a personal journey, that’s the joy of music. Keep ‘em coming and stay safe💜🙏💜🤘🏿💜
@@davidhoward2487 I can see actually both. The lyrics are about prohibition, gangsters and speakeasies but musically it has that 60s-70s feel you could see on the soundtrack of any Vietnam war-film. It's the best of both worlds. It shows the song as a song that can always withstand the test of time.
I was never really a lyrics man lol, but the voice and instrumentals... that spoke volumes to me even if I never actually understood the lyrics. I always preferred my own personal interpretation anyway ;) Right on Ty!
This has been my favorite song since 1972. We had moved from California to Arizona. We had just driven in to Williams AFB in Az. and The Hollies were playing that night in the NCO club. I was crashed in the back seat of the car while my dad, mom, and big brother and sister went into the club (things were safer then). I was so mad when I found out they had seen The Hollies. I was only 7 at the time. I took me a while to get over it. Great video !
Thank you all. Seem like music holds such strong memories. You hear a song and you are transported back to a time and place like you are actually there.
Even as a child, when this song was popular, I could appreciate that awesome guitar intro and that cool bass. I had no idea what the song was about...but that didn't matter. This is my favorite by them, but I also love "Bus Stop" and "The Air that I Breathe."
I had just gotten my driver's license when this song became popular. My brother had a '68 Mustang that had speakers inside the front doors. I would crank this song as I was flying down the highway. Great review, MRM.... totally understood what you were saying about the song and how it made you feel. Take care and be well. Peace.
One of those women in a black dress near the end is Diana Krall a Jazz singer and musician who is also Married to Elvis Costello .Krall and British musician Elvis Costello were married on December 6, 2003, at Elton John's estate outside London. Their twin sons, Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James, were born December 6, 2006, in New York City.
I listened to this song and one other one all the way from New Jersey to Frankfurt, Germany back in 1972 when I was going to my ship while in the Navy.
Wow, after 50 years of listening to this and I finally got to see what the words were. Also, I understand what you mean. It does sound like it could be part of a Vietnam movie.
A brilliant song. Allan Clarke, the original lead singer to The Hollies, who wrote this song with Roger Cook, has recently written and released a follow up to Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress - Long Cool Woman's Back In Town. Check it out.
I just listened to this song the other day. This song always reminds me of a friend of mine's parents. They played this song all the time, in fact the first time I heard it was at their house. Reading the lyrics to this song I realized I didn't know many of them, I have been mumbling to this song for years and years and not getting very many correct. By the way, not that anyone cares, the woman at the beginning and end of the video is the actress Charlotte Rampling. My favorite Hollies song is He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother, followed by Bus Stop.
Our skating rink played this song every weekend. When they played it, the rink filled up with skaters who were sitting on the sidelines, waiting on a good song. The owner of our skating rink was a wonderful man, and everyone loved him and his sidekick. It was a sad day when they shut the doors for good.
This is one of my favorite jams!!! I get what you're saying about vibes. It's got the same feel as Bad Moon Rising and Fortunate Son by CCR. You almost hear the helicopter. Another great reaction! Keep up the good work!💜
Fun fact. Lead singer Allan Clarke had left the Hollies when this track was released. The record company had a single to release to fulfill contract`s with the group and they agreed as they didn`t think it would be a hit. When it was, they had to convince Allan to come back.
I do understand . This song reminds of Creedance clear water revival who did fortunate son a Vietnam protest song . I could here this in a Vietnam war movie.
To the commenters who dispute MRM's "vibe" he gets.......Wikipedia is your friend. Great track, with the usual strong vocals from Alan Clarke. A story of a good man gone bad because of a woman (we always get the blame!😄) This always got us on our feet way back when. It was released during the Vietnam war and I think it was featured in Good morning Vietnam. I get it Ty! And in case you haven’t seen the memo from the others. He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother. You’re reactions are so forthright and honest - love it!🥂
This song. Always reminds me of my Dad. (RIP). When I was a little kid my Dad owned two (beer joints). In the country that's what we call drinking establishments in a rural country setting. Lol. This song was on the juke box and was played all the time and the sound of the song sounds like their singing in a beer joint setting. Kinda an echo sound. I've been hearing this one since prob first grade. But now it reminds me of my dad and makes me smile. Thanks.
Loved this song when released brings back great memories... I detected a bit of TRex sound in the guitar opening.. Holies wonderful songs...The air that I breathe just brilliant... Thanks for the suggestion ...cool.
Yep. It has that Vietnam feel. Believe the song came out around that era. This is a cool song. One of the only songs Hollies did without back ground vocal. They are known for their harmony.
This has always been one of my fave songs, however like the person that requested it, we never had the words, it was years before I think people got the words down. Heck I still miss some of them. Thanks for listening.
I got what you mean, Ty, and I I agree! Oh and I subscribed a loooooonnnnnnggggg time ago. First time commenting. Love your thoughts on music. Sometimes gives me a different and even better way to look at a song! So thanks, Brian D Cook Benson NC
The song was released in 1972 and was the 24th most popular song that year, it peaked at 2 on the billboard top 100. The fall of Saigon was not until 1975 . So you are totally right the vibe of the song IS the vibe of Vietnam era. I don,t think it was used in in its a war movie but would definitely fit.
I finally subscribed. I have been following your videos for a few months and really appreciate your take and point of view on music your not necessarily familiar with. I totally get your insight and critiques. Keep it going !
I get what you're saying. Everyone has their own way of interpreting a song, and it doesn't hit everyone the same way. My personal favorite is by The Hollies is He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.
When you stumbled at the beginning I thought..that would be a cool follow up song for the Hollies..."Long Black Woman in a Cool Dress". Got my attention! wah wah wah... lol I was 15 in '72 when this hit the top of the charts. One of those iconic songs of the teen years. My favorite song by the Holy's? This one. No complaints dude.
I also get that war feel from the song. I'm pretty sure it's because it came out the 70's when the Vietnam war was going on. Plus a lot of those Vietnam war movies had songs with this vibe in their soundtrack.
A very fun song to play on drums for me. The first I perfected. I agree on your inerpitation on the music and melody. I honestly never thought of it that way but once I thought about what you were saying I have to agree.
I get what you're saying with the era & vibe of the song and there are several that were around while war was happening. there's barely any recent war movies that have been made that doesn't have CCR in there somewhere. Your vids are great. Don't sweat the small stuff, lol! Keep it up
This is my favorite Hollies song. It has been one of my favorite songs for decades. Thanks for covering it. The only thing I do not Ike about the Hollies is their name. I’ve always thought it sounds too frilly or childish for the music they played. Try “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”. Probably my second favorite Hollies song.
This song was released in the US in 1972, during the Vietnam War. It would not be surprising then, if this song was played in the background by soldiers and aviators in the US Armed Forces, in preparation for an attack against the enemy. This song was definitely inspired by the recording of ""Green River", by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

After almost 50 years this song still "has it all".
7:38 THIS is my favorite song of the Hollies, followed by 'The Air That I Breathe'.
This song always reminds me of going to the skating rink on the weekends as a kid because they always played it!!
I've heard this my whole life but could never make out 75% of the lyrics til now lol.
MrAitraining same
Same here. This song came out when I was in high school. Still love it. Never knew most of the lyrics until today.
MrAitraining me too
My parents listened to The Hollies alot. Now I listen to them alot. I love their music. It's so hard to share my favourite Hollies song. "Air that I breathe" comes to mind. Beautiful song.
As for the "war movie" vibe, this particular song sounds a lot like Creedence Clearwater Revival, whose songs are often used in Vietnam war movies.
Was thinking the same thing. For the longest time, I thought CCR were the ones who made this, then found out who it actually was later.
...so basically any classic southern rock song will give him a war movie vibe
yes they did sound much like CCR
@@ricxcarr655 It does sound like a song that could easily be in a war movie soundtrack with the helicopters flying over vietnam
It's an image sound from film noir. Are you obtuse?

I'm not seeing a "war movie" with this tune... I'm seeing more of a 30's Gangster flick!
Yes...indeedie!

Remember the Titans
Nah you know this would be sick in a Vietnam don’t lie
Lyrics definitely 30s film noir. Music 60s groove is what I hear. Interesting combination.
Great tune by The Hollies. A favorite of mine. One of the most iconic opening guitar riffs ever.
He aint heavy hes my brother. You gotta listen. Period.
Beautiful the hollies were great..I remember hearing bus stop when I was a teen.it was played on the radio a lot.

One of my most favorite 70s songs. The guitar work is iconic. I get that 30s vibe from this song too. Like Prohibition era

That song was during the time of the Vietnam War.
1972 ,
Arguably the greatest guitar intro ever

The Hollies-Carrie Anne is the song my dad named me from. My mother changed the spelling to Kari Anne. I was born in 1971.
i also named my daughter carolyn because of their song.
Great choice to react to! When I was younger I always thought this was a CCR song lol. Love the intro to this song!

That base line is ridiculously on point man!!!!!!
Another GREAT song to roller skate to. It was the most requested song at the skating rink when I was a kid.

I have been in love with this song for about thirty years. It is nice to know what the hell they are singing about, finally...
I went to see the Hollies at Sheffield city hall in 1964 when Graham Nash of Crosby stills and Nash was singing with them.
I do understand . This song reminds of Creedance clear water revival who did fortunate son a Vietnam protest song . I could here this in a Vietnam war movie.
I been trying to get this one reacted to for a year. Great Great classic rock song. As good as it gets!
A perfect song in every way. Pure visualization.
This song is in Remember The Titans during the football montage of when the team started winning

Lake Racer, he just did that one a few days ago.
I don't see a war theme here but more of a gangster theme. This is my favorite song by the Hollies!
The Hollies were a great band, and had a lot of hits. More than most people remember till You start looking at a list of their hits.
I was in high school when this came out. Love their song "Long Dark Road".
This song goes to full volume if it comes on when I’m driving.
I love The Hollies! I actually have this album!
Great choice brother!!
Graham Nash was one of the few that was in two great groups at the same time, the Hollies, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

You're are correct the music has been used in Vietnam movies , infact the comments you made that was exactly the movie it was in.
