21:36 we get to the true heart of the utter failure that is this film. the plot of the game is that they accidentally open up a PORTAL TO HELL, and then the movie just changes it into the standard generic old genetic engineering gone wrong plot that had been done many times already by 2005, and has NOTHING TO DO WITH DOOM. such potential wasted to make a boring movie we've already seen a dozen times. that's what pisses me off about this movie. hell, Event Horizon was a better DOOM movie than DOOM.

I'm surprised that you guys didn't like the 3rd act twist with the villain of the film. I liked it for all the reasons you disliked it, pretty much. I thought it was great seeing an actor have a chance to run completely counter to how he is usually type-cast, and in that spirit I thought the performance was really interesting and novel. That and the FPS sequence were the two 'gems' hidden in the rough of the film for me. Good work as always, and looking forward to more FilmJoy.
Mikey, it's such a pleasure watching you work. I can't really put into words what your essays and the rest of the film joy channel means to me. Enjoying the show, everyone is lovely. Quick note though : being slightly colourblind, I have a hard time reading your text on screen at times, especially when it's teal/light blue-green on clear backgrounds like at the start of the video.
I would pay many monies to see a cut of this episode which only showed Zoe freaking out about poopy Doom horror. Much like Rosamund Pike, Zoe freaking out was the real MVP of this episode. Love you guys!
The monster effects still stand up pretty good, gotta love those practical effects! I think the whole "genetically inherent evil" concept is a interesting premise for a horror film, just not this film.
Hey, me too! :) About once a year or so I'll pop it in after the family's gone to bed and give it another watch. This is the movie I associate Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike with in my head when I see them in other things. Not the Rock though, for some reason.
I have plenty of bad movies that I love to watch, this just doesn't meet that standard. Normally a bad movie that's fun to watch has to be memorable for some unique reasons, this is the Pinnacle of generic soldier movie.
If you just don't think about it being connected to the games (at all) and don't matter that it's supposed to be demons - it's a really enjoyable movie. Like Master TMO, I usually see this movie once a year because it's one of those movies that never stops being enjoyable to watch.

Which is sad because the game its based on actually has a pretty rich story if one just bothers to find it and they missed a golden opportunity to adapt it, tbh.
@@fakegmale4648 I don't entirely agree. A good story in a game adds more than you might thinks. Especially if it draws you into the game more and allows you to garner extra enjoyment out of it.
TheKazragore oh yeah i completely agree with you, my point is just that the original doom didn’t have too much of a story because they didn’t think it had to
To think this is where Flex Cavanna was in the mid 2000's prior to Disney scooping him up and jumpstarting his Action boom that turned him into Hollywood's Golden Tan Stud.
Honestly, my favorite thing about this movie is how many British/Australian actors/directors are in this movie. Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike, Ben Daniels, Richard Brake, Deobia Oparei, Al Weaver AND Dexter Fletcher (who is directing movies now, specifically as the replacement director for Bohemian Rhapsody and directed the upcoming Elton John Biopic, Rocketman.)
I loooove this movie and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I don't have an issue with it diverging too much from the video game because I've never been that big into the Doom franchise to begin with. And I love anything Karl Urban is in so I'm hugely biased lol
This movie brought me one of my very favourite theatre experiences. Watching it at 2:30 on a Tuesday afternoon, in a theatre that was empty except me, a then high school girl, and one other person, a bigger guy in his late 20s at the very least. When the Rock picks up the BFG, both of us simultaneously repeating the line, Big Fucking Gun in perfect unison. We shared a nod and a smile in that moment, and absolutely nothing else. It was fantastic.
Doom is my favorite bad movie. Every time I watch it, with friends, alone, drunk, sober, whatever, it's worse than the last time. The movie has become a kind of immortal meme to us. Also The Rock's line about Dr. Carmack's condition being irreversible is the best don't @ me.

Working in the jobs that I have, yes, it's annoying to see this supposed special task force squad get dismantled by mistakes that should've been beaten out of them before they moved beyond being rank amateurs, I can also appreciate that the movie seemed to try avoiding giving us a cast of broken, unstoppable characters who are in basically no danger because of how much of a group of badasses they are. At least long enough to get the character arcs out of the way before they dipped their toes into making a memorable, albeit unfortunately short section that feels like it could've been pulled straight from one of the games. Beyond that, part of me feels like they knew the movie wasn't going to be good by basically any measure, so refraining from going full into hell portal territory seems like it was mostly to save face from the masses who might go to see it who had incidentally zero familiarity with the DOOM franchise. In short, reference Christianity and certain aspects of it, sure, but don't try to alienate the audience by making it hordes of demons.
To me, this always felt like Doom 3 getting the Resident Evil movie treatment. It definitely had levels of care and charm put into it that alot of other videogame movies WISH they got. I know it's about as far removed from the first game as you could get, but to be fair the original games didn't give alot to work with to stretch out into a feature length film.
Another movie that treats The Rock differently to normal and is also considered awful is 'Southland Tales'. It's so wild that it's actually a sequel to a graphic novel that came out after the movie and I have nothing but respect for the biggest power move of the decade.
At 19:10, I was all like, "Oh shit yeah, Mikey of Filmjoy used to make video games." It's cool to see a video game dev's opinion on a video game movie. (Cause I had no idea who Tim Willits was.) Even if we have to wait to see a video game person -make- a film as Sam says at 47:40, we still get to hear a video game dev's opinion on films. I'd be fascinated in other storytelling crossover type stuff of that ilk.
Movies based on video games vs. Video game movies made by video game developers. Best way to make this comparison is Resident Evil. You have the Paul Anderson garbage, then the animated movies released by Capcom. You might say it could be a MWM episode.
This was a fun and needed diversion. lol But holy hell am I with Zoe on the next Deep Dive. I could've gone my whole life happily not having seen Twilight. Technically I still will because I'm only going to watch your video of it, but it's the principle of the thing.

(Cause I had no idea who Tim Willits was.)
Even if we have to wait to see a video game person -make- a film as Sam says at 47:40, we still get to hear a video game dev's opinion on films.
I'd be fascinated in other storytelling crossover type stuff of that ilk.
Have you seen Faster? Johnson is not a hero in that movie. It is however really good.
Doom: The Movie: The Game: The Movie
I AM SO PUMPED FOR NEXT TIME
Took like 6 viewings to realize Elisa’s shirt is a fairly obscure Wayne’s World reference. Damn.
You could say thus film was always DOOMED to fail
*shakes head in disappointment*
That was a doom joke.
Respec the choice at the end, but legit DDDcut is p good.
[T] We may get there eventually :)
Great episode guys!
Still waiting on the Daredevil Director's Cut (which I actually love). The action in that movie very clearly inspires some other modern superhero films. I cant wait!
After Jenny Nicholson's Beastly video I need more content that Embraces The Suck but I'm looking forward to Twilight too
A video game developer making a movie? Don't tell them about Wing Commander...
[T] As has been pointed out by others, What about Tim Miller's Deadpool?
Elisa was born to rock that jacket. This movie was terrible, time only makes it worse.
