This episode shows how much Gravity Falls takes it up a notch with Season Two. Season One was mostly filler establishing the larger world with occasional hints at solving the mystery. Now their heading toward the final and making able use of there time. While you kind of talked over it, at 3:50 Dipper says it's been a hard couple of days and suggests we take a break. Indicating this episode is going to a breather from the last two. Yet it doesn't really feel like a filler episode since we got the Pacifica character development. From this point onward we continue to feels this on-going world expansion even when we're aren't furthering the journal plot.
Its because of things like what you mentioned that I feel like the series doesn’t have any filler episodes. Sure there may be a couple episodes that you can skip but almost everything in the show gets referenced in the future and it makes the character arcs so rewarding if you watch everything.
@@SergioM473 Agreed! I would argue that nothing in S1 is "filler", even if it doesn't deal with the central mysteries, because it's doing the work that 9ansean mentions - establishing the larger world and the characters of the town. Think of the end of Season 1, and all of those characters gathered around the destroyed Gideon-bot. Think of how many characters in that scene we already know for their personalities and quirks; they aren't just a faceless crowd. Without getting specific, our having such a complete view of Gravity Falls as a town, with all its quirky people, is going to keep paying off in Season 2, and it makes a LOT of the stuff that happens in Season 2 have a lot more meaning, you know? There's a lot of developments coming that, I would argue, wouldn't have had as much impact if we hadn't gotten to know everyone so well during Season 1. You can't rush that kind of development, either. (For me, Gravity Falls, as a town, feels almost as rich as the town of Springfield and the expansive cast of The Simpsons. Obviously it's not *as* big, but then, The Simpsons took many years to expand its recurring cast and make viewers more invested in them. There's a lot of characters in Gravity Falls that I'm pretty invested in, and it's amazing that the show accomplished that in only 2 seasons, with *so much else* also going on, story-wise.)
The end credits ciphers in S2 are a lot more complicated than the ones in S1. You might want to take the answer to some that you've already seen (like this episode) and see if you can make sense of the relationship between the code and the answer. . Or, if you'd prefer a hint . . . . . . The S2 end credits ciphers main schtick is a scavenger hunt in the episode. The ciphers use a Vigenère cipher which requires a key to encode and decode. The letters in the key determine the offset distance for each corresponding letter in the message. You might want to find a non-GF-related guide to the Vigenère cipher to get comfortable with how it works, then you can just search the episodes for where the keys are hidden.
I regrettably get the last line of that golf song STUCK in my head at random moments of the day, always in that ridiculous falsetto. "But there's NOthing like a HOLE IN OOOOOOOOOONE!"
@@cosmicorder2 John Henry is the legendary folk lore figure who dies after trying to tunnel faster than a newly introduced machine. Big John, of the song _'Big Bad John'_ by Jimmy Dean, dies at the bottom of a mine as he saves all of his fellow miners from a cave-in. Hence why I think the character in this episode relates to this song rather than the legendary character you suggest. Although, nothing says the writers couldn't have had both in mind. I will go back to correct the song title in my original post. :-)
It's only re-watching it with you two that I realized that there's a hole in Mabel's character. It was established that Dipper beats Mabel at everything. The only thing she had over Dipper was her height. But now, out of nowhere, she's the best mini-golf player around. She's even better than Dipper.
I recently heard Patton Oswalt on the Kingcast (Stephen King story discussion podcast), and not only was he witty & charming, but also very clever, informed and deep of thought. I was really impressed, considering that it was basically an unscripted interview.
I find golf to be mind-numbing. Can’t bear to watch a tournament. That said, I am open to playing mini-golf. I guess the smaller scale of it makes it somewhat appealing to me
Anyone who supports their Patreon want to suggest that they watch s2 e16 ahead of Northwest manor mystery (s2e10)? The story just work better that way since it otherwise just neglects Pacificas and Dipper development, it also doesn’t spoil anything going on later in the season so.
Big Henry might of been loosely inspired John Henry. But yeah this epsiode got dark but you aint seen nothing yet :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Henry_(folklore)
The message at the end translates as 'REMEMBER BIG HENRY'.
RIP Big Henry
stan is the best character hands down. him being sweet to the kids never fails to get me emotional ;w;
Great reaction! Big Henry's sacrifice hits harder every time I see it!

That whole Big Henry bit is one of my favorite bits of Gravity Falls
This is a great episode for building Pacifica's character. But I can't wait for you guys to get the the fun parts tho!
I loved your guys' reactions when Stan gave that sticker to Mabel. :)
the way Katrina's face lights up at 6:18 is just precious
This is a great episode. I love that they gave Pacifica more dimensions in this episode. I can't wait for the next episode. It's one of my favorites!
This has to be the goofiest concept for an episode in the entire show and that is quite an accomplishment when you think about it

Paula is giving my mild 80's vibes and I appreciates it

Can we get some "F's" in the replies for Big Henry? The bravest of the Lilluputtians. A true friend, and a brave hero. R.I.P Big Henry.

Patton Oswald is a hoot no matter what kind of role he's in.
I've never had something affect me so much in 30 seconds than Big Henry. RIP
First time on the channel, the intro is such a bop
Who said Dip-cifica? Not me!
I love your guys' reaction, especially how moved you were by Stan (I love him so much) and Big Henry (so so dark omg).
Pacifica''s dad is voiced by nathan fillion
Just gotta say the miner hole deserves everything for big Henry alone….
Big Henry appears to be a nod to the song _'Big Bad John'_ and/or the Big John Iron Mine in Vulcan, Michigan, an attraction open since 1958.
John Henry?

I am soooooo glad I've found this channel before the finale. Ooooh, it's gonna be an event. There's gonna be tears. Lots of tears 😭

A very minor plothole to be honest. He's better than than her at almost everything, that doesn't change much.
Oh my gosh that guy worked at the mattress store in the first episode
Sock Opera is next, which is the first GF episode I ever watched in full! It gave me nightmares :D

Not to mention the imaginative obstacles at the courses!
5:28 My friend explained this for me, now i laugh everytime😂😂😂😂😂
Love Mini-golf more then actual golf
Im so excited for the next episode
Nooo, the codes :(. The best ones are in the last frame and those are easy A-Z like before, please reconsider.
Don't worry...they will answer (almost) everything!
I just hear Jesse whenever Franz talks
And none of the humans even KNEW about Big Henry and Polly!
No one knew about the “cute silly things” that go on in the mines
Have you tried looking for thyme on the seasonings isle.
why do you always need to look up the episode titles? Are you not watching on Disney+?
1:41 oh
I didn't realize when I watched
09:09 I THOUGHT THEY DESERVED IT FOR THIS
Remember Big Henry!
I would rather hear you talk about the episodes then codes
Is it just me or is the pirate voiced by Jim cummings
Ah yes. My least favourite episode. Had a few good jokes and i love that they give Pacifica a bit more depth. But thats about it.
Kinda my feelings about it as well
