  • I review, breakdown and explain All Of Us Strangers. I discuss the 2024 movie which stars Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal which is focussed on the death of Adam's parents. I react to the twist during the ending around Harry, I analyse the deeper meaning of the film and the symbolism of grief and loneliness that is present.

adam is dead too. he died in a fire in his apartment: we hear the fire alarm going off at the beginning; he keeps taking to his head, like he has a headache; he keeps coughing throughout the movie, and is told 4-5 times by his parents and harry that “he is burning up”. besides the father plays a song for adam called “i don’t want to set the world on fire” by the ink spots.. i am 100% convinced adam died in the very beginning. harry was so lonely and miserable that he was already half-dead - and everything we see hereinafter happen in the movie, is in sort of an in-between life and death world, a sort of limbo, where adam can mend the things, he didn’t get to do in live before dying. also there are a lot of scenes with mirrors/windows and reflections- and also a lot of scenes in the train. taking the train is also a sort of limbo, where you move from one destination to another, and we see that a lot in the movie. it’s a movie about closure, about giving love and life a chance, even when you think it’s impossible or too late. such a great film ❤

i also feel like Harrys death has happened a long time ago too - his clothing, the age gap, also the clubbing, I also feel like Harrys apartment door looks kind of old? and with the white noise from the tv it also gives off the impression, that this scene happened when TVs weren't flat screens - my interpretation is that their relationship happened when Adam was in his 20s? and because Adam couldn't get over the loss of his parents, he wasn't able to let harry in (emotionally)- that's why harry feels so lonely. this could have led to a break up or argument that made harry drink himself to death

@@lizvandelouwbut why did Harry introduce himself on the first night if they already knew each other? I don’t get it, do you think it was their first meeting and he was just imagining that’s why he looks older?

    • @nightowl2997
      @nightowl2997 Місяць тому +4

@@lizvandelouw No, because I think Harry and Adam were never even in a close relationship, so that they could have an argument or a break up. I think Harry dies the first night they met, because he wore the same clothing in both scenes and held the same alcohol bottle and all that. Also Adam’s words “I should have let you in” can be seen in an emotional, but also a literal way, because if Adam had let Harry in then Harry wouldn’t have drunk himself to death and they could’ve had the possible relationship that we saw in the movie

I don't know if I was the only one to notice it, but the colors are so meaningful in this movie! Adam is always wearing blue, his mother has a lot of green in her and his dad has red. That's the RGB colors. Combined, they form white, which is the color Harry tends to wear and the color he shined in when he was passing away. So Adan can only come truly close to Harry when he puts all the parts of his identify together and becomes at peace with his parents. Really beautiful

It's incredible how that initial scene of them meeting for the first time takes on an entire level of added meaning after the big twist at the end. Paul Mescal's performance was incredibly nuanced, it perfectly misdirects us from the actual feelings that were probably going inside HARRY"S head. I initially misread his desperation to be let in as playful and sex-forward, but after that ending, it is so much more devastating. I've lost sleep just thinking about this! What an incredible film!

I just lost my partner of 33.5 years this past December after a long fight with liver cancer. I was there holding him in the hospital bed when his last breath left him. All I could say to him was, "You are no longer in pain, baby. No longer in pain." As I pushed his hair from his face and kissed his forehead. I didn't even cry. Not then, at least.
Like in the movie, my sleep patterns are off now. I miss him terribly. I stare at the ceiling fan. The house is quiet. Almost alien. I am 61, retired, and I have no idea what is ahead for me now. The loneliness is real.

Thought it might be interesting to point out with regards to the film and the ending. If you're familiar with the original book - it will make more sense. None of what we saw was real apart from the very beginning when they meet at the door. The rest is all in his imagination / screenplay / book. In the original book - the more he visited his 'ghosts' the sicker her became (hence Adam was not feeling well after each visit with his parents etc...) I know it's not what people want to hear but makes way more sense than him being the grown up version of the little boy from 'the six sense'.

I'm reminded of Jean-Paul Sartre's play "Huis Clos" or "No Exit" in English in which the characters are all locked in a room in purgatory together tormenting and traumatising each other. It's only through acceptance of their own existence that they discover they could've left the room the whole time.

I found your explanation and review spot on! I've seen the film twice so far (here in the U.S.), and it is truly one of the most moving films I've ever seen. MILD SPOILERS AHEAD: The only thing I would add to your analysis of the ending is that Adam, having finally said goodbye to his parents and made his peace with their death, is now able to help Harry (in whatever realm he exists) spiritually by confidently encircling him with his love and protection. In other words, Adam has made the leap to opening his heart unconditionally. That's why the ending of the film can't really be described by a duality such as "sad/happy": it just IS. Thank you.

As someone who lost his own mother decades ago… suddenly, unexpectedly (and before I got a chance to come out to her) this story resonated powerfully with me. I loved the scenes 🎬 where Adam got to cry & hug 🫂 his father (Jamie Bell)… the sharp realisation that his parents had a different mind-set, on account of the decade that they died & left him (shown by Clair Foy’s discomfort & confusion over how to accept her gay son)… and the twist at the end… when you realise that Harry had also been dead for the entire movie.
All these characters needed closure… and Adam was so isolated from the world, only the dead could reach out & connect with him.

For me , I feel that Andrew too has passed . What was the significance of the fire alarm at the beginning of the film ? Did he die in a fire ?Why are they the only two people in a London apartment block ?
The scene thar broke me is when Andrew found Harry's body ...to think of the loneliness Harry endured, the rejection , just had me in bits ...Somehow the power of love rescued them both from oblivion - There are more things in heaven and earth Horatio......

This is a film you can't leave behind, you think on it for a while. To be honest, once you have seen it and understood it, you probably should see it again..........Ive seen Andrew Scott say how Adam was in a kind of purgatory, which after seeing the film I take to mean literally. Mom, Dad, Harry and Adam are ALL dead, helping each other work through pain in order to move on. After finding peace with his parents, Adam's Mom tells him Harry needs him, one more thing Adam needs to do before moving on. That's why at the end Adam and Harry are as one a star in the sky together.

My spin Adam is at the beginning in limbo and hadn’t passed over because he had unfinished business with his Parents. Theory 1. Adam was dead because the blue flashing lights and fire alarm signified a fire. Therefore Adam was able to see and interact with both his Parents and Harry whose ghost he helped to pass over. Theory 2. Adam throughout the film complained and having sweats plus the references to AIDS…a link? Theory 3. When towards the end Adam and his Parents went to his favourite place ie: the diner at the shopping mall, the waitress saw Adam but not his Parents and questioned if he was sure he wanted to order the family meal. The waitress evidently saw Adam so he couldn’t have been dead.
Finally Adam was 12 now middle aged. Say he was 40 would an eaterie still be there after nearly 39 years with the same menu? The joy of the film is the refusal to offer explanations and try to rationalise it. Also it resonates and is interpreted in different ways with everyone judging by the comments. A haunting and beguiling masterpiece.

In the book Adam gets progressively more ill after each time his visits his parents, to the point where one of his colleagues sounds serious alarm when they see him. Spending time with all the ghosts is literally destroying his lifeforce and he becomes almost like a walking corpse, yet he can't see this as he is under the spell. At the end he realises this and confronts Harry (who is a woman in the novel) and we are left with a very different outcome.

I also had the feeling, that the death of Adam's Parents resulted in Adam not being able to properly let people into his life/heart again. Hence Adam didn't and probably couldn't say 'Yes' to Harry the night he knocked on Adam's door. But deep inside, Adam actually longs for deep connection and someone to be there for/with him. So saying 'No' to Harry could've been his way of protection of losing someone again. Craving connection but not being able to receive/give it can be such an isolating feeling as well. So living with Harry in his mind could've been his way to safely let him into his heart. And I think there could also be a bit of guilt behind it, because Adam probably realised that Harry might have survived if he spent the night with him. But also, how could Adam have known? In some way we're all strangers not really knowing what is on someone elses mind.

The movie has multidimensional layers that you discover through the timeline. It is about loss, loneliness, relations, love, psychology, society, time, life - death and more. I also believe that Adam after (an early) point was dead too but it was intented to be blurred as the protagonist Adam probably did not have the awareness of it, he was in a kind of transition state and we see the story form his subjective viewpoint.
I, on the contrary, found the end of the film kind of optimistic and cathartic as everyone exits life (spacetime) having peace. It closed all the gaps of loneliness that was left through in Adam's life. Parents could not interract with Harry because they never met him during life but they saw him because he was dead too and Adam was the bridge. Parents knew they were dead and Harry was suspecting his own but it was Adam (a character in between life and death) who could answer their question and pain, filling in his own needs of redemption. Parents had to go because the needs were fulfiled and we don't coexist like we were alive in the aftermath.
We don't die instantly. From the outside point of view (to the others) we might be dead but from our own subjective point of view we are still able to create stories in our mind. And since death is an end in the spacetime, time and other limitations (like space or loneliness) do not exist. This film is more than a masterpiece it is a wonderful allegory of existence.

Your comment, Beautiful to watch, really says it all.
The film deals with loneliness, grief and loss. But it also conveys how people react to those who are gay. Even though times have evolved and attitudes changed somewhat, there is still a note of misunderstanding and unacceptance.
It's interesting how differently Adam's parents react to him telling them he is gay.
His mother is shocked and not quite believing it. Full of concern and worry for her son's happiness and wellbeing, but then showing signs of disapproval. She's drinking her tea and as the conversation continues, she dumps it out as though it has lost its appeal. Then she tells Adam to take the pancakes with him as she will not be eating them. It's almost as though she has lost her appetite after hearing Adam is gay. Then I realized she is not hungry because she is not living.
Quite differently, Adam's father is unsurprised and reveals that he may have suspected Adam was gay and bullied at school. Then the discussion turns to why his father didn't discuss it with Adam and try to comfort him. His father asks why Adam didn't let him know. It comes out that his father didn't want to know and Adam realized he would not take it well so kept it to himself. The fear of confrontation and disappointment had created a barrier in their communication and relationship.
Interesting too, that Harry was raised at a much later time when gay issues were more open. Many concerns had been addressed in the later generation and society had evolved. However, Harry's family was not totally accepting of him being gay and Harry felt like an outsider. Times have changed, but some things are still a challenge for Harry. He still has his parents, but chooses to avoid them. When he is dead, no one cares enough to find him. What a sad concept.

Heard so many mentions of this movie that I had to watch. I came to this review right afterwards. When Harry asked "Why didn't anyone find me?" Is when I finally broke down. A lot of the descriptions I'd seen prior talked about his relationship with his mother. While I took note of was the father-son relationship. His father was always (at least in his imagination) so loving and affectionate. As he was leaving after the first visit, his dad kissed him goodbye on the lips. As many fathers would do with their sons. The acting as a whole was beyond stellar. Harry, Harry, Harry. I always saw the immense sadness in his eyes, and i felt it in every scene. Even when it seemed he was joyful, that look was there. I'm happy that it took 2 days to watch this movie. If I had watched it in one go, I absolutely would have been more of a wreck than I am now.

I interpreted it as both Adam and Harry were dead and they were in limbo (hence the eerily empty apartment block), and they could only let go and die once they learned to love and receive love.

Paul mescal was quoted in Vanity Fair as “People who really respond to it kind of throw the rationale out the window, which is the way to encounter the film-it’s not about looking for what’s real and what isn’t,” he says. “If you watch All of Us Strangers and you become fixated by the reality, you’ve just missed the film! If you’re concerned about, ‘Oh, I feel robbed,’ then you’ve reduced it down to that fact as what the film is about-and it’s not about that.””
-I kind of get what he is saying but I also don’t find a problem in trying to figure out what’s real or not. I don’t think anybody misses the point of the movie and what Adam experiences if they discuss that but I also think it’s worth saying that if he did imagine it all I guess if it helped him then it’s OK? but why is it bad to want it to be real? If you imagine things in your life, instead of actually experiencing them, it’s a question of does it actually help you?

The review is good, but the film is so much more than all that’s said here. I would only advise not seeing it when you’re feeling particularly fragile, because it is heartbreaking - but also incredibly beautiful. Save it for a day when you’re feeling resilient

I didn't want Harry to be dead at the end. Maybe Adam didn't exchange a set of ghosts for another.

  •  4 місяці тому +7

Although the plot was not the same I thought of Mizoguchi's ' Ugetsu ' and devastaingly more than even that ' ghostly ' film. I think all the characters were dead ( literally ) and Sartre's ' Huis Clos ' also came to mind. The corridors, the constant remembering and revisiting after death. This analysis also makes sense of the disco scene. It is in my opinion a masterpiece and has to be endured. I place the film in what I call the films of endurance and for the weak or frail it could be devastating to watch.

Adam lost his parents overnight and that was a traumatised event that caused him to feel deeply abandoned. Children who go through such horrific loss either become what Adan describes as having a scar on his chest - I'd say a car tissue, rigid and insecure, not allowing anyone in which literally happens when Harry knocks at his door, or extremely aggressive and demanding of attention. Adam has been a loner. He never goes out, no phone calls, or messages from friends - he is emotionally wounded. In the end, Adam says goodbye to his parents but can't move on and accept he has lost another love. He 'takes' Harry up to his flat, and in pursuit of comfort, they cuddle in bed like Adam used to do with his parents and falls back into his fantasy world.

THIS FILM JUST TORE ME APART 😭
phew it was such an emotional ride , I found myself weeping for most of the movie.
    **Spoiler**
The moment I understood that his parents are not real and that he's imagining meeting them , the jar of tears just broke open from there till the end of the movie.
I'm not exactly sure why it moved me the way it did. Maybe because the film reflects the initial connection in the world with our caregivers, and how we long for their approval and love even when we're grown up.
There's something about hearing all of the things we long to hear from them, and telling them all we need to tell them, that is such a katarsis.
The state of PTSD that Adam was in was also highly relateble, as most of us carry traumas from our past which get stuck in our bodies and minds.
I think there's so much going on in this film that every human can relate to, because we have all had caregivers , and most of us have been traumatized one way or another..
    10/10!!

Harry's death at the end was confusing to me; I just didn't get it; it's the only part of the film that is a bit hazy for me. He's dead, no, he's alive, no he's dead...? I got it with Adam and his parents; all of that worked for me--beautifully. It's Harry's demise that I'm still not settled about. As you said, the acting--by everyone--was superb; and the film was very moving (of course). So I congratulate and thank everyone for lovely performances. ps--When Jamie Bell (as the father) kissed his son, twice I think, on the lips, I started tearing up immediately. So much is said in those scenes, even without words.

I agree with what you say about the ending. I left the cinema broken and unsatisfied and with no hope for Adam. But reading all these different reviews and opinions and what people got out of it helped me to accept (and sort of understand) the ending even though I'm not happy about it. I'm still crying after a week and I'm not sure a movie should do this to viewers.

Having lost a parent suddenly and traumatically, it brought so many emotions to the surface, I couldn’t sleep after watching it and the feeling stayed with me for days afterwards. Wonderful review! I still don't quite know how to read Adam at the end, though. Is he also a ghost? I ask because there he is with Harry and they are together a star in the night sky, which is profoundly beautiful, but leaves me wondering. Not that I need a tidy answer for everything, but this truly haunted me...

my take, this whole thing was a dreamscape. The empty condo building makes me feel that. Too surreal. Fear, depression, anxiety, desire will all resonate in his subconscience. He's a writer, his head is full of stuff. Harry was a manifestation of all his desires, fears of having a partner and the fear of losing a partner like Harry leaving him at the end. Or feeling like his is not worthy of love since his parents left him and struggles as an adult. Throw in some PTSD from his childhood. What a brilliant movie.

I bawled my eyes out. I watched it on Disney (it's just been released), so i am glad i had that privacy, to watch it home, and not cry around anybody else. The last time i can remember a whole audience crying, was when "Philadelphia" was released. My mum took me, 14yo at the time, to the cinema, during the week, and the room was full. No-one said a word after it finished, and a lot didn't leave straightaway, because they were crying. I hope this beautiful film wins everything, as it truly deserves it.
