After removing the stock air cleaner cover on my newly-acquired '95 Heritage I found the previous owner had installed a Vance & Hines air cleaner with a washable filter like that one. Gave it a good clean and was amazed at the dirt that came off it. I wiped off any excess filter oil after giving it a chance to soak into the media.
Your "spin-dry" method is ingenious, well done mate!
Thanks mate, simple and effective aye. and should keep the fuel economy at it's best .. and congratulations on the new bike as well.!
I run DNA filters on my Triumph, but I have two of them. That way there is always one in use on the bike, and one either in maintenance or on the shelf once maintenance is complete (my filters are rectangular, and the spin-dry method is not the best idea). Over the years of using various K&N or DNA filters on various machines I've also found that the filter material should be COMPLETELY dry prior to oiling, otherwise the oil isn't fully absorbed into the filter medium.
It feels great having a bike properly serviced step by step. A very rewarding task. They might not run a lot better afterwards, but you know they're perfect for upcoming rides. I have quite a few things to do after riding the steep Italian gravel trails with my Beta Alp 200: Air filter (I have a K&N system similar to this Harley, but a foam filter), engine oil and filter, fork oil. And get the linkage system greased, it's squeaking over each and every stone. Thanks for your videos, Günter/Nürnberg
I absolutely love the fj1200 and am glad the trike fell through.
Fitted a brand Pipercross washable filler (couldn't get a k&n) brilliant bike. Everyone likes it.
Now, I got the rest of the bike to service. Fortunately, I bought everything to do it as I have just lost my job, and that position was housekeeping.
Great video, Del x
Sorry to hear about your job, we hope you can get sorted quickly, glad you're keeping a positive outlook, D&Px
I’ve had great luck with KN cleaner (aerosol spray) and lube (red squeeze bottle). I also rinse from the inside out, pushing the dirt away.
I have to say that the K&N kit is more convenient with the pump bottle an spray can.
The instructions also say to rinse from the inside out. Just my two cents. I appreciate the videos though, there's always something new to be learned 🦉
Thanks for sharing!
If an Air Filter Cleaning Kit is not at hand, what lubricant could be used for oiling the filter? Thanks for your videos, as always great content. You mentioned proper air filter oil, so is it better to not reoil the filter if no air filter oil is available?
Just buy some mate, it's readily available !
In a pinch you could use motor oil but your air filter oils are mixed with solvents to aid in even dispersal.
@@Moonfleet41 I see it's a must, thanks.
@@williamfoster4268 Thanks for the idea.
Another good informative video man. Hey I didn't have the proper k and n filter cleaner for my sns stealth so I used s100. It seemed to do a good job, I let it dry, oiled it with k and n oil, and put it back on the bike. Do you think s100 will damage the cotton with repeated uses?. It did a really good job cleaning the filter. I didn't have the money to buy the proper filter cleaner so I used what I had on the shelf man....
I can't really answer that as I don't know what the 'cotton' actually is, if it truly is just cotton, I doubt it, and I don't know what's in the S100 either, probably nothing too harmful, but interestingly, one viewer did say that he'd been washing his filter, for many years, in a strong solution of domestic washing powder and apparantly it works really well, so for sure, use what you have in a pinch always"
Great tutorial as always. Sorry if its not air filter related but I have one question if you don't mind. I'm struggling to find an answer or solution: on my 2017 Iron 883 I have a evap charcoal cannister leaking oil. And I'm not sure what I suppose to do, it s a very thick honey like oil dripping while stationary. I'm not even sure if this suppose to be on the bike as I was only reading that the Californian spec bikes have them for emmision purposes. I'm in the UK and the bike "apparently" was bought in the UK as new. Do you have any idea why its leaking oil and how the solve it or just remove it from the bike. Many thanks in advance.
If it was fitted from the factory then it's certainly a California bike.. they're only fitted to catch and condense fuel vapour from the fuel tank breather.. eventually they just get literally 'full', and it's a nasty sticky black goo, pretty toxic too.. so you can just remove it and just 'delete' the evap system all together. You can remove everything including the solenoid, just leave the tank breather hose at the top as the tank needs to breath. Hope that helps.. it's covered in your manual in easy steps !
@Moonfleet41 Thank you very much for the explanation. Much appreciated 🙏. It's strange that it was not promoted by the garage that the bike is imported. I will try to remove it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything about this evap delete in my owners manual. I will try to look for some tutorials and hopefully will give me some idea how to get started.
Enjoy your vids, carn't agree on the environment advantages when all those chemicals, oil, gloves, poisoned water and energy you use are totted up
Well of course, any vehicle maintenance work comes with a footprint, and in fact so does anything automotive ! but using this as a case in point, a dirty air filter makes a vehicle run rich, like the choke is on, and cleaning it rectifies that... i suppose you could say it's all about management, i dispose of all my waste as responsibly as i can, and my power usage is based on the most effective equipment, LED lighting, low energy ventilation, Lithium battery tools etc etc... Thanks for your kind support mate. it's much appreciated !
MotoX air filter cleaner sprays do just as good a job as the K&N sprays I've found. Can then use up the rest of K&N oil... win win😊
@@markellen-bp8vsI use MX filter oils and cleaners regularly and they are definitely the way to go for the soft sponge filters. Buy the cleaner in a 5L and the oil in a 1L bottle. They Will last you dozens of cleans, the sprays are also really expensive in comparison (I clean after almost every dirt ride).
I re-use the old cleaner, it goes into a tall thin container after use, where the sediment drops out of solution between cleaning.
The old cleaner I just use for "roughing out" the bulk of the filter contaminants, then return it to the storage container. I then do a second clean using fresh new oil which means I only use 150ml or so new cleaner per filter.
I find a 1L oil pouring jug to work really well for mushing the foam filters into to clean, and it's easy to pour used cleaner back into the re-used container. I just don't see how the low pressure dribbling of oil over a filter can really clean inside it. Really need some good agitation, but that can be hard to get!
I make a habit of cleaning my K&N air filter at the same time that I change my engine oil. Helps me keep track of when I last cleaned it. I have just used dishwashing soap on it. Seems to get it clean.
Great tip, ive seen that work before.. and yeah, great routine !
If the cleaning solution is not at hand I've used Dawn liquid dish soap and warm water, being sure to rinse thoroughly afterwards
House keeping....Goes a long way when it comes to engines. Ride safe, stay well.
You got that right Joe.. Take care my friend !
House keeping jobs … l find em relaxing and keeps you connected to yer bike …love to tinker like this …easy jobs but well worth it ..
Loved the spin dry idea! And the "quick-disconnect" feature of your spinner tool was the icing on the cake :)
Thanks Tommy.. Glad you liked it mate!
The scary part is that we breathe the same air that the bike does. Cool trick for drying the filter and then using the box to keep things neat. (thinking inside the box?😁) Love shop hacks like that. Great job Del and many thanks Penny for the great work behind the lens. Be well and happy my friends. ❤👍👍
Thanks buddy, glad you approve, little shop hacks make life easy aye... have a great week there, and thanks for all your kind words of support, it's much appreciated, D&Px
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your very kind support, i hope the video helped you out, and we really appreciate the donation..Thank you.
Your videos are a great help. I have a 2014, 48. Done only 4k. I done my filter last night. Noticed when I inspected behind the butterfly valve in the throttle body, light dusting on black really fine grit. Is this normal? How would I go about cleaning it? Thanks colin.
You can get a very light residue of waxy build up on the butterfly plate.. it's from the oil vapour sucked in through the filter.. It's the very reason you must not 'over oil' the filter, and yes, just wipe it off with a microfiber cloth and some carb cleaner, should just wipe away .!
Another vote for spin drying inside a box. Nifty idea.
But I DID cry when you lopped the head of the Hex head cover bolt off. That woulda fitted into my chuck.
I think alternatively you could use mineral spirits to clean the filter, it's cheap and easy to get.
Washing harsh chemicals and oil down the drain is saving the environment? And basically you've turned your motorcycle into a hoover because it's definitely going to suck in some dirt, that's why you'll never see oiled gauze filters from the OEM
Don't kid yourself there's anything green about vehicles in the first place mate, even electric ones, they all have a footprint... the only chemicals involved here are soap and as for washing it down the sink, what do you do with your Nana's roasting tin, where does that grease go... it's just responsible management and I personally don't agree with throwing OEM disposable filters, that contain non degradable paper, wire, rubber and plastic in to landfill at every service, imagine how many vehicles are serviced every year. No-one's saving the environment, maybe we're just picking the least wasteful option!
great video brother ! I actually did not know how the process, good to know since I've always been buying filters and throwing them out when they are dirty ! Better way to start saving money ! Keep up the great work brother! Stay safe guys cheers from New York !!!
Thanks for watching and your support Renzo, we always appreciate it... have a brilliant week there both, take care and ride safe! D&Px
Been using the K&Ns for years great idea on the spin dry lol, living in Perth WA does have an advantage sometimes re summer filters dry in about 10mins, 👍
Yeah, 40+ degrees i bet a lot of things dry quick.. i can't imagine the issues it would cause with painting vehicles unless it's in a controlled booth.. still, we must never moan about the warm sunshine aye !!
I keep thinkging about switching out the bikes to those, but not sure about Tilly and the trip, as I'm guessing riding on a sandy beach or..desert is going to royally bung up the filter.
I AM taking a spare "normal" air filter... AND I found a decent Yamaha shop in Casablanca, for spares lol
6 days!!
The shop-vac is a good idea and now part of my routine!
Thanks Harold, im glad to pass it forward... just common sense aye !
Just make sure you suck, not blow! 😄
If that's a stainless steel mesh it may not require oil. Arlen Ness filters specifically say no oil ever on their stainless filter.
Interesting, but this is a Harley filter and I believe they're to be oiled.
Great video as always!
Oiling this type of filter is essential, the oil plays a major part in filtering the incoming air!
Always a pleasure to follow your videos. For the cleaner i used regular washing powder. 😊
Thanks for sharing that buddy, it makes total sense considering the filter element is cloth.
Thanks, Del, you’ve reminded me to take a look at our 2 bikes’ K&Ns! Cheers and hope you both are doing well. Man cold? If so, get better soon. 🏍👍🏍
I went for the "wifes hairdryer" method on my KN filter at the weekend. Sadly no way to do the spin dry on my particular one, which would have been more wife friendly.
Gaffa tape it across the door of your tumble drier for ten minutes.. bone dry in no time !!
Thanks for another great educational video! Since they don't provide enough cleaner as oil I wonder if Dawn dishwashing liquid diluted with water might work as a cleaner? It seems to dispel oil and dirt fairly well.
Strangely enough.. the cleaning agent smells very much like dish washer liquid...it's clearly soap based, so im sure it would have some effect yeah.!
And hot/warm water
What brand is that filter? HD washable filters do not get oiled. I like those more.
Spin dry solution just the job Del 👍
Love your videos del
I could have done with this one a few years ago when I oiled an air filter for the first time.
I over did it and my engine was getting suffocated and cut out 😂
Hope there were no lasting effects, I guess we live and learn aye, thanks for watching!
Nice job, guiltily of not doing it often enough. Bought a 5L cleaner ready for all the vehicles 😀
I'm usually a big fan of pure filth but that's too much 😂😂
Me to buddy 😂😂
Spot on! Love a washable air filter! God trick to spin dry it too if you're able to. Sounding a bit croaky mate, hope the covid had gone and that your voice clears up soon!
Thanks mate👍, shook off the Covid in the end, back to normal now !
Another video that is full of really useful maintenance tips & tricks. Another reason why its just a great channel.
Thanks again buddy, always glad to hear from you.
Good tip Del,spinning it👌
Thanks 👍
The new shops looks awesome brother
Must do house keeping job and reusable air filters all the way. Well sorted mate and love the drying trick, nice to see you are doing well with some sun. Penny and you have a safe week. Cheers
Thanks buddy👍, simple tricks passing forward.. Have a safe week too and thank you for your support as always..
That reminds me of a job I have to do👍
Cheers mate! I was already told I need to do this!
No problem 👍
Very glad you did this! I fitted one of these DNA filters after one of your videos. Now I know how to look after it 😅
Sound advice as ever Del.
I really enjoy your videos, details perfectly said and demonstrated. Thank you! All the way
From Houston Tx.
Thanks for watching buddy, much appreciate your feedback!
What is that strange thing with choke written on it ?… never seen that before …
admit the benefits are numerous, but man I dislike this job. No rational reason haha but like you said, must be done!
Yeah sure thing, but isn't any servicing a chore in the end!
Del, since u like harleys, scramblers, cafe racers, naked etc……. How come you never had a Buell? xb9 or 12 look like your kind of bike.
A nother great video. Are you in the US or Australia ?
Love the Harley video’s got myself a evo.. would love some vids of that. Greets from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
👍👍👍👍👍top
Thanks to the 'Clean Air Act' of 1712 (teatime), & over a hundred years of biking with shredded tree-carcass air filtration, we can now hang-out WASHABLE sticky-fly-paper.
"Sorry lads, not tonight, I'm stopping in & washing my air . . . cleaner."
Thinks: If you feel you need beard-oil, your soup's too lumpy. Have a good week : )xx
The finest lyric standard as ever Sir!
Great video mate. Del do you have a link for those front ratchet tie downs please mate, can`t seem to find any good ones out there. cheers
Here you go mate. These are what im using at the moment ! www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/ratchet-tie-down-25mm-x-4-5m-polyester-webbing-with-s-hook-800kg-breaking-strength-120080?search=TD0845S&description=true
@@Moonfleet41 cheers Del. Don`t know what`s going on with UA-cam, but it`s not showing my user name, Glen Claypole Smith, it`s showing REKLESSWOLVES1 which i haven`t used for years, fkin thing lol
Hi Penny and Del - excellent video. I have a K&N in my Bandit and it does get cleaned and re-oiled regularly. I really like the way you did yours! Take care, my friends - be well and ride safe.
Thanks for your kind words as always, we truly appreciate it, wishing you a fantastic rest of the week, hope you're enjoying some sunshine there! Ride safe, D&Px
I bought a used KTM 990 and groaned when I saw a K&N airfilter --- swapped it back to an OEM paper filter. I reckon the engineers know better.
Engineers? You think they make the decisions? Don't kind yourself, Accountants run the world and all the decisions on vehicle manufacture are more influenced by profit than anything else.
I agree with your comment on quantities of cleaner v oil. The same is true of leather cleaner and conditioner. Those who put these kits together are no mugs...
Ha ha.. yeah, didn't think of it like that..! damn schemers..lol!
it could probably do with a catch can, then at least the oil coming out of the breather's wouldnt contribute to the gunge in the filter.
If you take a little closer look, the engine re-breathes the rocker tube's outlet, and it's sucked in inboard of the filter, it doesn't pass through it so it can't contaminate it.
