Great video John. The location looks awesome. I remember Ian Dunbar saying at a seminar that he will often hide treats in trees and then train his dogs "naked" and reinforce with the food he previously hid. Essentially teaching the dog it doesn't matter if you have a treat bag, toys or treats on you, there's a possibility reinforcement will come. He then joked about the confused look on the dogs face when they begin to think there are dog treat-growing trees!
The use of treats and toys to teach behavior are then replaced with affection(i.e. Naked). All three are positive reinforcement for positive behavior. im just glad you didn't start removing clothing in the park.
Very nice video! I also like the park you are working in as seen often in your videos. Great big park, I would love to see these kind of parks here in The Netherlands.
I love the approach. I have always tried to just use food and phrase for rewarding already learned behaviour. You really have your dog working well and focused on you. Makes me feel a lot better about doing some of the same things as you are. I look forward to more videos !
Great video John. At the end, in your explanation, I think you perfectly captured the difference between using food/toys as part of a training regime of positive reinforcement - and using them to "bribe the dog" to do a behaviour. This is what many critics don't understand. 😆
Amazing. The level of training and time put in with each other is obvious here. You guys just want to be around each other great bond. If this is what is possible using only positive reinforcement it truly shows that anything is possible and the dog is obviously having an amazing time just interacting. I think we all strive to get to this level but only a high amount of effort and training gets you these results. It's a certain case for if this is positive reinforcement it can show that aversive or balanced training is hopefully going to be a thing of the past. Awesome job to you both
Hi from Oz! Sorry for the late response we do live down under. I love the video and the message you gave me. I teach my dogs via PR but I am guilty of putting them through their learned behaviours in situ as needed or just to keep them working but I never work them just for the joy (mine) of getting a cuddle. I will be doing so from now on as I would imagine the strength of our bond can only grow. On a personal level, I just love listening to you as I am originally from Bridgton. One more thing is the park Glasgow Green? Thank you again .
I also here this myth about the dog not working unless you've got food or toys on you. Just shows ignorance of the process. I go to an intermittent reinforcement schedule as soon as the dog is fluid in the behavior. I then transition to life rewards, verbal praise, whatever motivates the dog in that moment.
How about showing basic obedience command using naked dog training -sit,down,come,watch me,heel, barking etc a more clear version? i ould like to train my dogs using no food or toys
+missRobbie M Thanks for your comment. I think it is a rare dog who will work witout food ot toys unless you start using escape/avoidance training which I don't advocate.
Wonderful video once again, John! You're both so happy with each other! May I ask which GoPro model you're using? I'm looking into getting an action cam I can use hands free to video my own training, and I love the quality of your footage. Thanks a lot!
+Glasgow Dog Trainer Thanks! After watching some comparisons I figured it was the 3+. Saw some nice prices for it, but you're right, the older models look quite good too. Are you using the chest harness to film when you're on the move?
she looks at you the whole even with other people and animals around, I'd like to train my dog with only rare food rewards, and more on petting /playing and praise, I want her to obey when I don't have toys and treats around (like if they escape out the front door or something ) and to not need bribes to do things that are expected. (like going potty outside instead of inside ). of course I might use them with new commands after they respond correctly and randomly after exceptional behavior (being good at the park, or vet) to renforce an already good behavior and encourage future success.
+Katie D It's important to still use foog and toys even for the "expected" behaviours. We don;t work for free, our wages reinforce our behaviour of going to work. A dog needs to be reinforced for the behaviours you want to keep seeing, we can just build a whole bunch of different reinforcers.

Really nice interaction and engagement--Watson is coming along marvelously! Lovely video John--thanks for publishing them!

Love this video. The relationship between you both is amazing.
+Aileen Stevenson Thank you

Super. Relationship is a reward.
This was just lovely to see. She is so happy and so obviously enamored with you.
Great video!! "Don't be a moron!" Wonderful!!

That would be reinforcement variety rather than an intermittent reinforcement schedule
Yes, I love this! Great video!
Great help for me and my girl keep them coming

+Annieke Lamers Thank you. Hero 3+, it suits me well but the Hero and Hero 2 models are great as well and can be very inexpensive now.

+Annieke Lamers Nevermind, I saw you answered that on another video. :)

That was cool man 😀
We can't hear a word your saying. Use a mic next time.
Was that "please use a mic next time"? There was no need to use a mic in any case, I was only using some words of encouragement occassionally.
If you're talking about while he's training, he says "Gooood! Good girl. Good. Good girl. Yaaaaay! Good Girl!" and so on. Hope that helps.
