Notice that when Will gets lifted up, no other athletes are standing there. Were all of them supposed to be picked up, which was why Beanpole was in the stands with the girls (still wearing his Games clothes)?
it's a shame for the tripods that didn't think to put some form of GPS tracking or identity chipping into those caps...could have worked out they were taking duds on board in no time....
You have to remember that at the time they figured they had everyone under control thru the caps and never figured on the free men. It is like in the books where Fritz tells Will in the city that it would never occur to the Masters that a human could be dangerous because they aren't used to seeing them.
